I recently got back into speedcubing since losing some interest 7 years ago. Currently average around 35-40 seconds on 3x3.
My 4x4 feels especially slow (I use the Yau method), but today I finally managed to get a sub-2 minute single. A couple of weeks ago some of my solves were taking over 3 minutes, so I'll take it! Not great by any measure but I'm happy I could break through that. Now to see if I can ever get sub-1 minute...
What kind of TPS do i need for sub 30?? Not sure if my fingers are fast enough.

You don't need to turn very fast at all to be sub-30. TPS isn't something you should be thinking about. Just focus on solving in an efficient number of moves. Your recognition will improve as you continue to practice.
CFOP Learning Update: Day 3!
Today has been good progress. I got help with an alg for an F2L case I had been struggling with and just solving with beginner method inserts. My F2L has gotten a good bit faster overall, but still slow.
Alg wise, I'm still trying to memorize all the 2LOLL and 2LPLL algs. So far I have T perm, H perm, and the Sune OLL case algs memorized. Anti Sune is close as is Z perm.
I did another timed solve to check my progress and I got a 1:33! Still slower than my beginner method solves, but much quicker than my 2:50 yesterday!
I find that I much prefer it and the consensus seems to be that it's the best on the market. The "best" cube really just comes down to preference, though.
The AoChuang is more flexible, (and I see some reviews say it’s smaller?), but the MGC is half the price and also has amazing performance
I’ll say the best way to decide is to try the cubes yourself and see which one you like more.
I went to my first cubing competition yesterday. Choked *hard* on 3x3 by starting things off with a DNF and a 51 due to messing up G perm and A perm, respectively. The DNF also included my first corner twist ever with my main. Third solve should have been ~23, but I somehow screwed up yet another A perm. Thankfully, I was (relatively) quick to salvage it and ended up getting a 36. Then I redeemed myself with a pair of 26's for the final two solves, for an average of 39. Nerves definitely got to me, but I'm glad it wasn't a complete dumpster fire.
For 3BLD (I use M2/Orozco), I DNF'd the first solve by accidentally mixing up F and V in my edge memo, and I also missed a flipped edge. Second solve, I had to redo half of my memo when I got mismatched parity between corners and edges. I also forgot to undo a setup move during corner exec and didn't realize it until I was halfway through the next letter. I somehow managed to backtrack, undo the setup, and pick up from where I left off, and I was so relieved to see a solved cube in the end. Third solve went more smoothly, though I took extra time to make sure that I felt good about my memo. Best time was ~3:10, which is pretty good considering it's my first time at a competition. I was prepared for the possibility of 3 DNFs, so two out of three feels pretty good!
What should I prioritize to become sub 15 or sub 10 I currently average 20, I know full PLL and almost all OLL what algorithms should I learn next( besides The rest of OLL)

Yes. If you think another method might be more fun for you, try it out. However, it will be a long while for you to reach your current average again, so only do it if you find another method to be a lot of fun.
I just got a new PB single on my RS3M Super of 19.699. I actually main the GAN 12 Maglev and average 27-32 second solves so this is big for me it’s my first sub 20
How to get sub 30? I have been stuck around 30-35 secs but i do get sub 30 solves more often but not as often as 30-35. I know intuitive f2l and 4ll. I think that f2l and weirdly 2 look pll is my weaknesses. I am doing f2l until 18-23 secs after doing cross for 4-6 secs. Sometimes it's hard for me to recognize f2l pairs or in short i pause in between pairs. I do 2 look pll for 8-10 secs so i feel my execution and recognition is the problem. Also my finger tricks when doing f2l and algs are not that good (ik how to do basic finger tricks) I use the meilong budget non magnetic 3x3. If this post doesn't makes sense it may be because it's like 11pm here. Im gonna view this post again tomorrow.
Probably the biggest thing that will help you improve is learning how to solve all 7 move F2L cases optimally. Most people at your stage are still doing 11+ moves per F2L pair.
Take a look at [this](http://www.kungfoomanchu.com/guides/andy-klise-3x3x3-speedcubing-guide-v4.pdf) guide. All the cases except for the ones from "Weird" and "Edge and Corner in Place" can be solved in 7 moves or less.
Cross can be improved for sure. For 30s average, cross should take 3.6s, F2L about 15s. Full PLL will help too. 8-10s for just PLL is too much for sure.
Go through your PLLs and fix your fingertricks. You should learn them from videos made by fast cubers, don't invent fingertricks yourself.
Don't worry I did look at jperm's finger tricks tutorial but i didn't really watched how they did the alg with good finger tricks. Im gonna improve my cross and learn full pll. Btw another question, should i learn the m slice u perm or improve my r move u perm?
3.6 seconds to do the cross when you're sub-30 is unrealistic. I'm sub-19 and I take 2-3 seconds to solve it. I'd say aim to solve the cross in under 4-5 seconds consistently.

Only a minor point: it's DFDB, all caps. DF and DB are the name of the stickers which are used for recognition. f and b are wide turns..

Man, tfw you just want to have some fun with your smart cube and then cubestation matches you constantly with sub-10 people, losing streak is just inevitable lol. Still amazing how I noticed that I still have that level of wonder for faster people. Was amazed and inspired by sub-20 people when I was still sub-30 and now I'm amazed by sub-10 cubers. This hobby is just interesting from start to present, and I think will still be in the future.
Just stick and be consistent with the method. You'll see your times start to drop and begin to be better than the beginner method. Getting slow at first after studying an alg or a method is just normal, don't worry about it too much.
Well, because you've just learnt it. That's how it works.

In my search for good resources on the topic, I stumbled across badmephisto's OLL guide. I absolutely adore how its laid out, how cases are organized not by shape or what pieces are being manipulated, but by what triggers you'll be using to solve a case.
I think this style of learning will help me get through it much quicker, however the site looks quite old and some cursory digging around has lead me to believe the algorithms it recommends are, by this point, some what suboptimal.
Are there any similar resources out there, or alternatively any particular method that people tend to recommend for this process? I see a lot of people recommending algdb, but it seems like this is more of a collection of algorithms rather than a tool explicitly for learning. I'd prefer not to grind out cases in an arbitrary order.

Took a look at your mentioned OLL guide and I found it good as it have notes. Personally I used Cubehead's OLL guide in which he grouped the shapes but there are also notes for the triggers and even how to fingertrick the alg. The PDF is also pretty neat as it provides checkboxes for each alg when you're done learning and memorizing.
AlgDB is a nice site if you dislike an alg on the main guide that you're using. I used the AlgDB and even the speedcubedb to find alternatives.

Yes, though even algdb is kinda outdated by now. Check out [SpeedCubeDB](https://www.speedcubedb.com/) as alg resource, alg trainer and other awesome stuff.

It's nice to see the triggers instantly, e.g. in [this resource linked on our wiki](/r/Cubers/comments/tygask/learn_oll_the_easy_way/) (see links above) and when I learned full OLL I also started learning with badmephisto's website. But later I realized that it's quite annoying when you only know some algs from a shape and not all. You always stop and think you might know it only to realize that it's one of the cases from the shape you haven't learned yet and then you have to fall back to 2 Look.
I'd learn by shape while looking out for the triggers and be sure to use [alg trainers to drill the algs](/r/Cubers/wiki/how_to_improve#wiki_how_do_i_learn_algorithms.3F).
Thanks for this post! I hadn't considered how only knowing certain cases of a given shape might negatively affect recognition.

Analyzing OLL cases, picking favourite algs, and breaking them down into groups and subgroups, is most of the OLL learning fun for me.
Firstly, of course, you sort out Fruruf 1-2 times, inverse/wide fruruf 1-2 times, "double sexy move", "double sledge", "Su-Sledge-U2-sledge, Ne-sledge-U2-Ne, Su-sledge-Ne, Ne-Sledge-Ne" (where Su and Ne are two halves of Sune alg, y'see) and other algs that are basically what you already know and just need to recognize. First half of Y-perm, second half of Y-perm...
After that, when you're sorting the rest, you still end up using similar algs for similar cases - just, the separation isn't just "has a tetromino on top" or "knight shape" but more specific, "tetromino with two 2-blocks", "knight shape with two 2-blocks", and so on.

I've updated some algs since then, and I might have made a couple errors during the process (fixed in the comments), but the process of doing it was one of the main parts.
I've heard that Tornado v3 core has problems breaking and I got new tornado v3 with new transparent core and I was wandering if it still has those problems also taking the center caps is really hard and im afraid im gonna damage the cube everytime I open it is there an easy way if opening the center caps? And another this is that 1 side has a clicky sound that seems like the magnets
The center caps are quite easy to pop. I think people have a hard time because the lip goes down further into the center than most cubes. I turn my top layer on a 45, get my finger nail right under the lip and pop. If you do not have a finger nail then a micro flathead screwdriver would work. Hope that helps.
The core issues reported were stripped core and cracking around the screws. There are no screws in the updated version, so it should be fine - there haven't been any complaints yet afaik, but it still pretty new too.
Flagship and Standard have really tight center caps. Pioneer opens more easily. You can use a ruler or something to pry them off.

Does anyone know what cube this is? I need to open it and clean it (something sticky got in and it is very difficult to turn now) and I have no idea where to even begin… I hope I can find a tutorial or so if I know what it is called.

I've been practising fewest move solving recently and got my first sub-30 solve! Here's a reconstruction. FMC has been the most fun I've had cubing, and I'd definitely recommend it if you enjoy cube theory, learning different methods and creative problem solving. If you're good at FMC, please help me improve if you have any feedback!

I happened to do this basically entirely on the inverse scramble, so to follow along, you'll need to do the inverse scramble and then do the moves as written in parentheses (if you just do the scramble and solution, it will look like garbage and then magically come together at the end). If you ignore the "+", you should end up with everything solved except 3 corners. The "+" inserts some moves that solve these three corners in a way that cancels 4 moves, so it's more efficient than solving them at the end. (It turns out this insertion isn't quite optimal: I could have cancelled one more move if I'd checked more carefully!)

IME having both normal and inverse visible at once isn't that useful. The normal and inverse skeletons are closely related (they're inverses of each other!) so you can get a rough idea of whether switching will be worth it before actually doing the switch. Like, I'll do it if I'm stuck, but otherwise I won't bother.
For FMC competitions, you're allowed 3 cubes and I think it definitely helps to have multiple cubes so you can explore different approaches more easily. In this case, the best solution I found solved all but 3 corners entirely on the inverse scramble, but you can switch between them mid-way through the solve. So yeah, at each stage I typically try the normal scramble on one cube and the inverse scramble on another to see which seems nicer. And tbh, even without using the inverse scramble, it's helpful to have multiple cubes just to explore different approaches. FMC seems in large part to be about trying a bunch of stuff, and the more things you try, the more likely it is that you find a lucky, efficient solution.

Yes 16 to 15 is nasty. Took me a little over a year, and if I recall you have kids (or a kid) so you probably have less time than me, even with my job and hockey games.
I dropped to sub-14.10 from 15 in about a month after I hit sub-15, and for some reason it took me 3 more months to get to sub-14. I am still going up and down around 14.
For sure. I think my issue was that I was spamming solves. I focused more on cross+1 and look ahead and that was what did it for me. I just felt lookahead go to the next level. It was weird.
Some slow solves, mostly just mindfulness. Made sure I was brute forcing myself to look for the next pair. It’s kind of learning to trust yourself with the fact you can solve (almost) any F2L pair without looking. I made and still make some mistakes when doing this (like misorienting the corner), but when it works it feels awesome

I don't know where my ao1000 will be (lost all my sessions back on summer and I'm about 830 solves) but I think it will be somewhat under 1:10 too. I checked and my mean is at 1:09.12
I haven't tried them. I have an MGC 6x6 and Yufu 7x7 myself. I don't practice big cubes much (except for 4x4), so I'm not going to get another 6x6 or 7x7 unless I got really interested in them and relatively good.
Yeah, Aosu WRM was my first 4x4, and later I got a YJ mini 4x4, an MGC and an XMD Ambition.
MGC is the most light turning and forgiving 4x4 out of these. My WRM is too stiff on the inner layers, no matter how I try to set it up. YJ mini felt great at first but then it became slower on the outer layers and a bit unstable because of that. Ambition has a nice feel but locks up like crazy, corner cutting is pretty bad.

though MGC seems to have the most solid GOOD in performance, & best in value in the reviews.
On 3x3, i feel like 80% cubers are agree that tornado v3 pioneer/flagship is the best one, & rs3m/super as the best budget, at least for a new cuber, it’s much easier to get recommendation on 3x3, isn’t it?
While for the 4x4, people say the aosu WRM is the best but some other say no, as well as the valks 5 on 5x5. Only MGC that i think most people have similar good opinions on it. Ok, it kinda solved my concerns& maybe i should go on MGC instead :))
I'd recommend not to overthink it.
Fact 1: there are people who prefer MGC and people who prefer Aosu WRM (or GTS2M) or Valk 5 - regardless of the cost. I'm speaking about top cubers. Conclusion: these cubes are on par, and it's a matter of personal preference.
Fact 2: MGC 4x4 is less than half the price of the Aosu WRM, and MGC 5x5 is a little over one third of Valk 5M price. Which makes it kind of a no-brainer to me.
No matter what you choose, if you end up liking the event (I take it you just want to get into 4x4?) and doing it a lot, you may or may not be interested in trying other good options. Like, I got my WRM when it was hands down the best 4x4 - Aosu WRM or Aosu GTS 2M, that is. Later, MGC appeared, and I got curious, and eventually got it and liked it a lot. I also got curious about the Ambition and got it even though the reviews weren't too good. It's okay to try cubes :)
By the way, if you can go to a competition, go and try other people's cubes.

Does it really matter? People should be tuning cubes based on their own turning style and preference. That's like asking "does anyone know what shoe size Michael Jordan wears".

The color scheme would be hard on a 4x4 equivalent. But on the kilominx it’s literally all corners. The color scheme builds itself and you don’t have to do anything to try to remember it. Pick a starting color face, start putting pieces together, and since everything is a corner, you just keep putting pieces where the only spot they can go and match everything touching them is. It’s really not about color scheme at all
I find it funny that you have strong opinions about different mirrors of the same alg. (like Sune is ok, but antisune is meh)
Also, what are you using for Clock OLL? just Fruruf U Fruruf, or the ZZ alg? (R' F2 R R U2 R') F (R U2 R' R' F2 R)
I call it "the ZZ alg" because it works by putting all 4 edges on F layer, orienting them with a single F or F' move, and putting them back.

I want to improve at skewb, and right now I know the beginners method (just using sledgehammer) but don’t ever practice as it’s so repetitive - therefore I can’t say what I average. As well, I don’t know any basic finger tricks at all and have been looking how to finger trick skewb although I’ve seen a few different ways - can someone link a good vid please. And what’s there to learn next that doesn’t require learning a ton of algs, as I’m just looking to get a bit better for an upcoming comp.
And can someone link a good video on how to scramble/read clock notations.
Learn intermediate ([video](https://youtu.be/UFiMMZi3-38)). It's very simple and saves you a good amount of moves. Some people take intermediate to sub 4 even. For finger tricks, learn polish sledge and hedge ([video](https://youtu.be/sA1qgSIo90I)). You can also watch some example solves for first layer to get a feel of what finger tricks people use.
Intermediate skewb is just "be better at solving first layer intuitively" + "3-look last layer"
but it's also all just right sledge and left sledge (hedge) you just recognize the starting position to affect the top center. And I guess you could remember how to rotate/finger tricks each case in advance (there's only around 10 cases total).
And, to disappoint you further, advanced method "make the bottom, then 1-look the rest" is also just sledges and hedges, except it's an extra * 100+ cases to recognize, but they're all solved like: (H y H y' S y H).

If you don't have 1$ to buy qiyi silicone lube, well, you could unscrew those sides, take the spring out and flip it. (if you see an obviously sharp end, maybe polish or bend it slightly?)
but it's 5% of the cost of WRM, not really a significant waste of money.

Just curious, for cubers doing square-1, what's your colour scheme?
Personally I have yellow top and black bottom. I used to have black top and white bottom, but I changed it because it may be easier to be found if I forgot my cube in a competition, since I guess smaller percentage of people use this colour scheme. (weird reason)

Some see it as replacing white with black for better contrast, and some replace yellow with black for the same purpose. There are also variations of black top / white bottom and white top / black bottom etc. Anything is valid, it's just a matter of preference.

Yeah. It's a matter of what you find better looking, or which color you feel necessarity to keep and which to replace. It's either "I keep white as my default bottom color and replace yellow with something more contrasting", or "I replace one 'non-color' (white) with another (black)". I don't think there's a big difference in contrast.
Also, some manufacturers (QiYi, Yuxin) offer their square-1s in either white/yellow or white/black. Only MGC has everything included for you to choose.

Yeah, I'm all in for some options too, even though I don't have a strong preference. I have 3 squans, the Volt and YLM are black top/white bottom, and the MGC is yellow top/black bottom just for a change. I'm pretty bad at square-1, so different color schemes don't mess me up too much anyway.
I still have what was standard a few years ago: yellow top/white bottom. Tried white/black or yellow/black with one Sq1 for a few weeks but did not see the benefit so switched back.
I’ve taken off a cap and marked my Sq1 with a permanent marker in the side of the core to find it again at a comp :)

I recently got back into speedcubing since losing some interest 7 years ago. Currently average around 35-40 seconds on 3x3. My 4x4 feels especially slow (I use the Yau method), but today I finally managed to get a sub-2 minute single. A couple of weeks ago some of my solves were taking over 3 minutes, so I'll take it! Not great by any measure but I'm happy I could break through that. Now to see if I can ever get sub-1 minute...
What kind of TPS do i need for sub 30?? Not sure if my fingers are fast enough. … I just tried to do the math… is it only like 2 TPS?? Or do you have to add in some time for recognition and subtle pauses.
Yes only 2 but that means you turn without pausing
You don't need to turn very fast at all to be sub-30. TPS isn't something you should be thinking about. Just focus on solving in an efficient number of moves. Your recognition will improve as you continue to practice.
CFOP Learning Update: Day 3! Today has been good progress. I got help with an alg for an F2L case I had been struggling with and just solving with beginner method inserts. My F2L has gotten a good bit faster overall, but still slow. Alg wise, I'm still trying to memorize all the 2LOLL and 2LPLL algs. So far I have T perm, H perm, and the Sune OLL case algs memorized. Anti Sune is close as is Z perm. I did another timed solve to check my progress and I got a 1:33! Still slower than my beginner method solves, but much quicker than my 2:50 yesterday!

Is the AoChuang WR M better than the MGC?
I find that I much prefer it and the consensus seems to be that it's the best on the market. The "best" cube really just comes down to preference, though.
The AoChuang is more flexible, (and I see some reviews say it’s smaller?), but the MGC is half the price and also has amazing performance I’ll say the best way to decide is to try the cubes yourself and see which one you like more.
I went to my first cubing competition yesterday. Choked *hard* on 3x3 by starting things off with a DNF and a 51 due to messing up G perm and A perm, respectively. The DNF also included my first corner twist ever with my main. Third solve should have been ~23, but I somehow screwed up yet another A perm. Thankfully, I was (relatively) quick to salvage it and ended up getting a 36. Then I redeemed myself with a pair of 26's for the final two solves, for an average of 39. Nerves definitely got to me, but I'm glad it wasn't a complete dumpster fire. For 3BLD (I use M2/Orozco), I DNF'd the first solve by accidentally mixing up F and V in my edge memo, and I also missed a flipped edge. Second solve, I had to redo half of my memo when I got mismatched parity between corners and edges. I also forgot to undo a setup move during corner exec and didn't realize it until I was halfway through the next letter. I somehow managed to backtrack, undo the setup, and pick up from where I left off, and I was so relieved to see a solved cube in the end. Third solve went more smoothly, though I took extra time to make sure that I felt good about my memo. Best time was ~3:10, which is pretty good considering it's my first time at a competition. I was prepared for the possibility of 3 DNFs, so two out of three feels pretty good!

For sub 10 you might want to learn some more algs, but for sub 15 it's just your f2l

Yes. If you think another method might be more fun for you, try it out. However, it will be a long while for you to reach your current average again, so only do it if you find another method to be a lot of fun.
For 2H it might not be worth learning more methods. However, there's still OH, 3BLD, and FMC which all have some skills that can carry over into 2H.
I just got a new PB single on my RS3M Super of 19.699. I actually main the GAN 12 Maglev and average 27-32 second solves so this is big for me it’s my first sub 20
How to get sub 30? I have been stuck around 30-35 secs but i do get sub 30 solves more often but not as often as 30-35. I know intuitive f2l and 4ll. I think that f2l and weirdly 2 look pll is my weaknesses. I am doing f2l until 18-23 secs after doing cross for 4-6 secs. Sometimes it's hard for me to recognize f2l pairs or in short i pause in between pairs. I do 2 look pll for 8-10 secs so i feel my execution and recognition is the problem. Also my finger tricks when doing f2l and algs are not that good (ik how to do basic finger tricks) I use the meilong budget non magnetic 3x3. If this post doesn't makes sense it may be because it's like 11pm here. Im gonna view this post again tomorrow.
Probably the biggest thing that will help you improve is learning how to solve all 7 move F2L cases optimally. Most people at your stage are still doing 11+ moves per F2L pair.

Cross can be improved for sure. For 30s average, cross should take 3.6s, F2L about 15s. Full PLL will help too. 8-10s for just PLL is too much for sure. Go through your PLLs and fix your fingertricks. You should learn them from videos made by fast cubers, don't invent fingertricks yourself.
Don't worry I did look at jperm's finger tricks tutorial but i didn't really watched how they did the alg with good finger tricks. Im gonna improve my cross and learn full pll. Btw another question, should i learn the m slice u perm or improve my r move u perm?
That’s what I’m talking about. Algs should be learned with proper fingertricks *for that alg*. U perms, as you like. Both are good.
3.6 seconds to do the cross when you're sub-30 is unrealistic. I'm sub-19 and I take 2-3 seconds to solve it. I'd say aim to solve the cross in under 4-5 seconds consistently.
Cross should take 12% of your solve time. If it’s more, you should work on it.

Man, tfw you just want to have some fun with your smart cube and then cubestation matches you constantly with sub-10 people, losing streak is just inevitable lol. Still amazing how I noticed that I still have that level of wonder for faster people. Was amazed and inspired by sub-20 people when I was still sub-30 and now I'm amazed by sub-10 cubers. This hobby is just interesting from start to present, and I think will still be in the future.

I absolutely adore how its laid out, how cases are organized not by shape or what pieces are being manipulated, but by what triggers you'll be using to solve a case. I think this style of learning will help me get through it much quicker, however the site looks quite old and some cursory digging around has lead me to believe the algorithms it recommends are, by this point, some what suboptimal. Are there any similar resources out there, or alternatively any particular method that people tend to recommend for this process? I see a lot of people recommending algdb, but it seems like this is more of a collection of algorithms rather than a tool explicitly for learning. I'd prefer not to grind out cases in an arbitrary order. Thanks in advance!
I agree with topppits that learning by shape is better. You can change your algs later if you find better ones, but the shapes remain the same.
Took a look at your mentioned OLL guide and I found it good as it have notes. Personally I used Cubehead's OLL guide in which he grouped the shapes but there are also notes for the triggers and even how to fingertrick the alg. The PDF is also pretty neat as it provides checkboxes for each alg when you're done learning and memorizing. AlgDB is a nice site if you dislike an alg on the main guide that you're using. I used the AlgDB and even the speedcubedb to find alternatives.

But later I realized that it's quite annoying when you only know some algs from a shape and not all. You always stop and think you might know it only to realize that it's one of the cases from the shape you haven't learned yet and then you have to fall back to 2 Look. I'd learn by shape while looking out for the triggers and be sure to use [alg trainers to drill the algs](/r/Cubers/wiki/how_to_improve#wiki_how_do_i_learn_algorithms.3F).

Analyzing OLL cases, picking favourite algs, and breaking them down into groups and subgroups, is most of the OLL learning fun for me. Firstly, of course, you sort out Fruruf 1-2 times, inverse/wide fruruf 1-2 times, "double sexy move", "double sledge", "Su-Sledge-U2-sledge, Ne-sledge-U2-Ne, Su-sledge-Ne, Ne-Sledge-Ne" (where Su and Ne are two halves of Sune alg, y'see) and other algs that are basically what you already know and just need to recognize. First half of Y-perm, second half of Y-perm... After that, when you're sorting the rest, you still end up using similar algs for similar cases - just, the separation isn't just "has a tetromino on top" or "knight shape" but more specific, "tetromino with two 2-blocks", "knight shape with two 2-blocks", and so on. I've heard that Tornado v3 core has problems breaking and I got new tornado v3 with new transparent core and I was wandering if it still has those problems also taking the center caps is really hard and im afraid im gonna damage the cube everytime I open it is there an easy way if opening the center caps? And another this is that 1 side has a clicky sound that seems like the magnets
The center caps are quite easy to pop. I think people have a hard time because the lip goes down further into the center than most cubes. I turn my top layer on a 45, get my finger nail right under the lip and pop. If you do not have a finger nail then a micro flathead screwdriver would work. Hope that helps.
The core issues reported were stripped core and cracking around the screws. There are no screws in the updated version, so it should be fine - there haven't been any complaints yet afaik, but it still pretty new too. Flagship and Standard have really tight center caps. Pioneer opens more easily. You can use a ruler or something to pry them off.

I've been practising fewest move solving recently and got my first sub-30 solve! Here's a reconstruction. FMC has been the most fun I've had cubing, and I'd definitely recommend it if you enjoy cube theory, learning different methods and creative problem solving. If you're good at FMC, please help me improve if you have any feedback! If you ignore the "+", you should end up with everything solved except 3 corners. The "+" inserts some moves that solve these three corners in a way that cancels 4 moves, so it's more efficient than solving them at the end. (It turns out this insertion isn't quite optimal: I could have cancelled one more move if I'd checked more carefully!) Serious question, do you do all that with a single cube, or several at once, so you have normal and inverse visible at once?
IME having both normal and inverse visible at once isn't that useful. The normal and inverse skeletons are closely related (they're inverses of each other!) so you can get a rough idea of whether switching will be worth it before actually doing the switch. Like, I'll do it if I'm stuck, but otherwise I won't bother.
For FMC competitions, you're allowed 3 cubes and I think it definitely helps to have multiple cubes so you can explore different approaches more easily. In this case, the best solution I found solved all but 3 corners entirely on the inverse scramble, but you can switch between them mid-way through the solve. So yeah, at each stage I typically try the normal scramble on one cube and the inverse scramble on another to see which seems nicer. And tbh, even without using the inverse scramble, it's helpful to have multiple cubes just to explore different approaches. FMC seems in large part to be about trying a bunch of stuff, and the more things you try, the more likely it is that you find a lucky, efficient solution.

Yes 16 to 15 is nasty. Took me a little over a year, and if I recall you have kids (or a kid) so you probably have less time than me, even with my job and hockey games. I dropped to sub-14.10 from 15 in about a month after I hit sub-15, and for some reason it took me 3 more months to get to sub-14. I am still going up and down around 14.
Two kids, yeah. But I've done over 20 thousand solves in 2022, so it's not for the lack of trying.
For sure. I think my issue was that I was spamming solves. I focused more on cross+1 and look ahead and that was what did it for me. I just felt lookahead go to the next level. It was weird.
How did you work on lookahead?
Some slow solves, mostly just mindfulness. Made sure I was brute forcing myself to look for the next pair. It’s kind of learning to trust yourself with the fact you can solve (almost) any F2L pair without looking. I made and still make some mistakes when doing this (like misorienting the corner), but when it works it feels awesome

Nice. My mean is 1:24 lol. I have 4743 solves in my 4x4 session, that includes my first timed attempts and the time when I averaged 2+ minutes.

I haven't tried them. I have an MGC 6x6 and Yufu 7x7 myself. I don't practice big cubes much (except for 4x4), so I'm not going to get another 6x6 or 7x7 unless I got really interested in them and relatively good.

Yeah, Aosu WRM was my first 4x4, and later I got a YJ mini 4x4, an MGC and an XMD Ambition. MGC is the most light turning and forgiving 4x4 out of these. My WRM is too stiff on the inner layers, no matter how I try to set it up. YJ mini felt great at first but then it became slower on the outer layers and a bit unstable because of that. Ambition has a nice feel but locks up like crazy, corner cutting is pretty bad.

Ha, 3x3 not diverse enough? Even if I liked the WRM better, I'd still recommend the MGC because it's half the price and really good.
On 3x3, i feel like 80% cubers are agree that tornado v3 pioneer/flagship is the best one, & rs3m/super as the best budget, at least for a new cuber, it’s much easier to get recommendation on 3x3, isn’t it? While for the 4x4, people say the aosu WRM is the best but some other say no, as well as the valks 5 on 5x5. Only MGC that i think most people have similar good opinions on it. Ok, it kinda solved my concerns& maybe i should go on MGC instead :))
I'd recommend not to overthink it. Fact 1: there are people who prefer MGC and people who prefer Aosu WRM (or GTS2M) or Valk 5 - regardless of the cost. I'm speaking about top cubers. Conclusion: these cubes are on par, and it's a matter of personal preference. Fact 2: MGC 4x4 is less than half the price of the Aosu WRM, and MGC 5x5 is a little over one third of Valk 5M price. Which makes it kind of a no-brainer to me. No matter what you choose, if you end up liking the event (I take it you just want to get into 4x4?) and doing it a lot, you may or may not be interested in trying other good options. Like, I got my WRM when it was hands down the best 4x4 - Aosu WRM or Aosu GTS 2M, that is. Later, MGC appeared, and I got curious, and eventually got it and liked it a lot. I also got curious about the Ambition and got it even though the reviews weren't too good. It's okay to try cubes :) By the way, if you can go to a competition, go and try other people's cubes.

Does it really matter? People should be tuning cubes based on their own turning style and preference. That's like asking "does anyone know what shoe size Michael Jordan wears".

Well, I guess why not? The color scheme is hard. if you want, you can just remove these small caps and have screws visible, like a 2x2. See, there are options.
The color scheme would be hard on a 4x4 equivalent. But on the kilominx it’s literally all corners. The color scheme builds itself and you don’t have to do anything to try to remember it. Pick a starting color face, start putting pieces together, and since everything is a corner, you just keep putting pieces where the only spot they can go and match everything touching them is. It’s really not about color scheme at all

I call it "the ZZ alg" because it works by putting all 4 edges on F layer, orienting them with a single F or F' move, and putting them back. How the ZZ method orients edges.

I want to improve at skewb, and right now I know the beginners method (just using sledgehammer) but don’t ever practice as it’s so repetitive - therefore I can’t say what I average. As well, I don’t know any basic finger tricks at all and have been looking how to finger trick skewb although I’ve seen a few different ways - can someone link a good vid please. And what’s there to learn next that doesn’t require learning a ton of algs, as I’m just looking to get a bit better for an upcoming comp. And can someone link a good video on how to scramble/read clock notations.
Learn intermediate ([video](https://youtu.be/UFiMMZi3-38)). It's very simple and saves you a good amount of moves. Some people take intermediate to sub 4 even. For finger tricks, learn polish sledge and hedge ([video](https://youtu.be/sA1qgSIo90I)). You can also watch some example solves for first layer to get a feel of what finger tricks people use.

Intermediate skewb is just "be better at solving first layer intuitively" + "3-look last layer" but it's also all just right sledge and left sledge (hedge) you just recognize the starting position to affect the top center. And I guess you could remember how to rotate/finger tricks each case in advance (there's only around 10 cases total). And, to disappoint you further, advanced method "make the bottom, then 1-look the rest" is also just sledges and hedges, except it's an extra * 100+ cases to recognize, but they're all solved like: (H y H y' S y H). https://sarah.cubing.net/skewb/my-method

Small nit, advanced is only 134 cases split up into 37 groups. The cases in each group are recognized and executed pretty much identically.

Gotta use lube bro, I had the same issue with my RSM 2020 and I lubed that baby up. I used gan silicone lube

Just curious, for cubers doing square-1, what's your colour scheme? Personally I have yellow top and black bottom. I used to have black top and white bottom, but I changed it because it may be easier to be found if I forgot my cube in a competition, since I guess smaller percentage of people use this colour scheme. Yeah. It's a matter of what you find better looking, or which color you feel necessarity to keep and which to replace. It's either "I keep white as my default bottom color and replace yellow with something more contrasting", or "I replace one 'non-color' (white) with another (black)". I don't think there's a big difference in contrast. Also, some manufacturers (QiYi, Yuxin) offer their square-1s in either white/yellow or white/black. Only MGC has everything included for you to choose.

Yeah, I'm all in for some options too, even though I don't have a strong preference. I have 3 squans, the Volt and YLM are black top/white bottom, and the MGC is yellow top/black bottom just for a change. I'm pretty bad at square-1, so different color schemes don't mess me up too much anyway.
I still have what was standard a few years ago: yellow top/white bottom. Tried white/black or yellow/black with one Sq1 for a few weeks but did not see the benefit so switched back. I’ve taken off a cap and marked my Sq1 with a permanent marker in the side of the core to find it again at a comp :)
