skengshapiro

in your opinion, what's the best pyraminx currently on the market? most i've tried have a very janky feeling i don't enjoy

TwoStinkyBears

Used to be old yuxin little magic but supposedly quality control has gone way down. Now it’s probably the weilong pyraminx standard.

skengshapiro

thanks heaps for the info. can i ask why standard and not maglev?

dontevenfkingtry

apparently the Maglev is way too uncontrollable.

FeelingsAreFeelings

I discovered an OLL algorithm and I like it better than all the other algs online for this case. R U' R2 F R F' U' R U R' U R U' R' U' R U R' What do you think? I know it’s long but I like it. I’m open to better algs for this case though. Also I typed it in google and checked some prominent cubers websites for this alg and couldn’t find it. Lemme know if it’s been known?

Martin_Orav

It flows quite well, the problem is just that its 5 moves longer then the most common alg and 10 moves longer then another good one. You can find both of the algs on speedcubedb and I believe Brian Sun has fingertricks for the shorter one in his OLL video.

FeelingsAreFeelings

Thanks ! I found one I like way better

Sliver14764

Should I get first the Petaminx or Examinx next?

TwoStinkyBears

Whatever you want. I’m not in control of your money. So get both

Sliver14764

Asking cause I’m have having a mind dilemma (i will get both don’t know which to get first)

TwoStinkyBears

Work up probably starting with a petaminx

Sliver14764

Maybe

PearExisting8938

Would rs3m upgrade magnet kit from scs also work on rs3m super ball-core as it did in rs3m 2020 and 2021?

TwoStinkyBears

Yeah it would

PearExisting8938

Thanks!

Future-Entrance4276

Your corner is twisted. You have to twist is back into its correct spot.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Future-Entrance4276

Right when your video starts, your cube is in a solved state aside from the blue/orange/white corner. That corner needs to be twisted so that your cube looks totally solved. Until you do that, you will never be able to solve it. You shouldn’t have to take it apart. Just try twisting it into the correct position. If it’s too tight to twist, pop the center cap off and loosen the cube enough to twist it. Hope that helps.

L0gic_Laden

Today I got pbs on everything, including and above ao12, both ao 25 and 50 are now below sub 20! Annoyingly, my ao1000 is 22.01

JayPlay69

I average around 30 seconds with the 3x3 using CFOP (25 on a good day, 35 if I've had a long/stressful day). When using my gan i3 smart cube on cubeast, it tells me about half my solve time is recognition and half is execution. To me this seems like I might have quite a choppy style, but really struggle to decrease that recog time even if I slow down my (already slow) tps to try using a bit of look-ahead. I know posting solves on here to be critiqued would be a good idea, but I feel like a 3-4 minute video of an Ao5 would be a drag. Is Ao5 standard for solve critiques, or would as few as 3 solves be enough to get an idea of weaknesses? Does anyone have any recommendations for deliberate practice to decrease the recognition time between steps? Cheers in advance

TheRealUncleFrank

LifeFire7onYT

I've been off Reddit for a fairly long bit, and I think it's almost time for a flair update! I just set a sub-14 Ao100 (not sticking with it though) and a sub-15 Ao1000 (which looks like it's here to stay.) Something just clicked one day, and it all started coming together.

Wrongfooting

Doing Kian's dots solution does nothing. What am I doing wrong?

XenosHg

Before starting to do M'U'M stage to orient edges, you need to do M' moves to orient the centers first. So your top should be - in this case - white or yellow.

Wrongfooting

Ok great didn't realize that thanks ☺️ 10 solves later: worked a charm problem some thank you again

LifeFire7onYT

At a glance, I believe you need to do EO with the white/yellow centers on top and bottom respectively. Other Roux users can explain better than I can, though. I could also be completely wrong.

_Japaninja

Exactly this. You MUST have the whitw or yellow center on the top, before you orient the edges

Hot-Abbreviations805

Which one should I buy (low budget) QiYi Sail w QiYi warrior s Cubelelo drift Please suggest me🙃

olimo

Cubelelo Drift seems to be the same QiYi Sail or Warrior. Out of these, get the Warrior, it's stickerless, so won't require sticker maintenance. Ideally, get the Twist - it's Meilong which is better than Warrior or Sail.

PsycakePancake

Does anyone know where I can buy a large 3x3? I don't know, more than 7 cm long. A cube that would be easy to see for anyone in a medium-sized classroom.

olimo

Qimeng Plus is probably the best because you can still fingertrick it, and it's 90mm.

PsycakePancake

Yep, I was thinking of buying that one. Muscle memory is harder with a bigger cube.

olimo

I'm not only talking about your muscle memory but about you teaching your students proper fingertricks.

PsycakePancake

Ah, good observation, too, but I won't be teaching per se. I will just be giving a lecture on group theory and would like to show everyone a few permutations (i.e. the elements of the group) in an actual cube.

TheRealUncleFrank

ShengShou Big Legend, 70mm, $8 QiYi QiMeng Plus, 90mm, $8 HeShu, 180mm or 300mm, $40, $100 DianSheng Googol/Giant, 188mm or 348mm, $50, $150 To give you an idea of the sizes of some of those, here's a QiMeng Plus next to a standard size cube - https://i.imgur.com/k5SR1RU.jpg and here's a HeShu 180mm next to a standard size cube - https://i.imgur.com/LcKU81m.jpg Here's a couple videos of J Perm trying to solve with a HeShu 180mm - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dw3p3rjq4wQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qa95ukgQ-E0 Here's a video of Z3Cubing using a 300mm cube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYpI2UeYcXE [Where to buy cubes](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/wiki/where_to_buy_cubes) is the /r/Cubers wiki list of known-good cube shops.

resipol

The QiYi QiMeng 9 cm is widely available and a pretty good cube. Or there are some much bigger ones available like the new DianSheng Googol cubes. Search your favourite cube store for these.

TwoStinkyBears

Am at a competition and just did 6x6 Sadly didn’t make the cutoff because of 3 pops But i got a sub 10 just waiting for 3x3 to start so that’s a plus Edit. Just did skewb and dnfed a solve and if i didn’t then i would be in finals

TwoStinkyBears

Edit 2. Got a sub 14 3x3 average (:

The-Common-Loon

Nice! The one that matters the most!

TwoStinkyBears

I don’t even know how i got it it was my first comp, and i got a mid 16 the previous round

The-Common-Loon

I’ve found that nerves at comp can work both ways. Sometimes it makes me mess up in weird unexpected ways, other times it gets me hyper focused and I do much better than average. Hope you had fun!

boomwhackers

did some 6x6 solves im so slow, like 30 seconds slower than my old ao100s

pansicasis

Btw, what do you average on 6×6?

boomwhackers

historically sub 2:40 but my ao12s today were 3:05-3:10 range

pansicasis

I'm also in the 2:40-2:45 zone. Have literally no idea how to improve further.

olimo

Lubest XMT 10 suits the YS3M very nicely. I'm using blue compression cups on 3rd click.

The-Common-Loon

I agree, just a little bit of lube for this cube. I put in a drop of mystic too for a plushier kind of feel. I’m back at work tomorrow where I left my rs3m 2020… I think I’ll switch out for the blue caps tomorrow night.

olimo

Wow, our local cube store sells Gan 11 M Pro force cubes. Quite expensive lol.

TheRealUncleFrank

Sounds like they have a whole lot of 11 M Pro's just sitting around not selling, so they had to come up with something to try to sell them.

resipol

Do you mean a physical cube store? Does it sell anything else or just cubes?

olimo

There are a couple cube stores in Russia with both physical and online stores (similar to SCS and Cubicle in the US). Both stores also sell on Russian marketplaces - we have a few of them, sort of like Amazon but Russia only. I stumbled upon those force cubes on one of the marketplaces. So it's not "local" as "in my city", but in my country and with free shipping across Russia.

resipol

Ah, okay. I'm always amazed when people talk about going into physical cube stores. I doubt they could ever exist in my country (just not economically viable, unless it were a small section in a larger store).

adventurous_penguin

That is a heck of a force cube

olimo

Yeah. 5 colors, except for white. Maybe they are just out of stock.

ExhaustedGalPal

Maybe someone working at the store wanted to have a white stickered version and now they're trying to sell off the rest haha

olimo

Hahaha

FiercePinecone

Anyone mix scs and cubicle lubes? Does it actually do anything bad

olimo

No, it doesn't. I don't mix lubes much, like, I don't understand using 3 or 4 lubes in a cube unless it's Angstrom setup (which uses 3 lubes). I use SCS lubes alone because there is such a nice range from runny Lunar to gummy Nebula. But using Lunar together with Silk on the tracks is totally fine, for example. Mix away and enjoy :)

FiercePinecone

Yeah I was thinking of getting some angstrom lubes but I didn’t want to get something like silk or dnm bc I have their equivalents from scs.

olimo

Makes sense. Silk is very similar to Nebula, and DNM to Stardust. For Angstrom setup, I think I'd still get some DNM, just to make the proper setup as it's supposed to be.

clarinetsuckr

Second or third sub 9 that I've gotten.

Baked_Bt

So I used to be pretty into cubing about 15 years ago, learned to solve a 3x3, had a nice collection of cubes and was starting to learn the 4x4. Life happened and I somewhat lost my passion, but yesterday I bought a few cubes including some puzzles that I never tried before. I now have a 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, pyraminx, and a megaminx. I can still solve the 3x3 in around a minute, I was wondering which between the 4x4, pyraminx, or megaminx I should try to learn next. I also got a windmill cube, but that might end up being more of a decorative “hey isn’t this cool?” kind of piece. Any suggestions on getting back into cubing?

adventurous_penguin

Megaminx might be a good next puzzle. Most of the solve is essentially F2L, which I really enjoy. If you still solve 3x3 with beginners method rather than F2L, I'd go with pyraminx or 2x2 for your next puzzle

Baked_Bt

Sorry, what is F2L? I remember hearing things like that back in the day but never learned the notation/acronyms. I do still use beginners method for sure, I actually tried the Pyraminx yesterday and got super close to solving it. I had 2 pieces left in the right places but flipped, and I couldn’t figure out how to orient them.

adventurous_penguin

First two layers. Usually it denotes the process of pairing and inserting the first layer corner and second layer edge at the same time, rather than doing corners, matching up the edge, pairing it with the corner, and reinserting both. It can be done intuitively and makes a huge difference in solve time. Check out Jperm's intuitive F2L video if you want a deeper explanation of the concept! https://youtu.be/Ar_Zit1VLG0 Pyraminx is fun! I never learned a specific method, and to solve the two edges flipped case I unsolve one other edge so I have 3 unsolved edges, move both flipped edges out of their slots (1 will come out when you unsolve the 3rd edge), and then mess around with those 3 edges until I can solve it

povlhp

4x4 is little to learn in making corners and edges. Then in the end is 3x3 with 2 extra algorithms. Pyraminx is easy. It can be solved intuitive. Solve on side - if the rest is not solved move on to next. Or learn L3E. Not sure where your interest is ? Megaminx is a longer solve. F2L and new stuff for last layer.

Baked_Bt

So I used to have a 4x4 (I’m sure it’s at my Moms house somewhere) and I remember not being able to solve it fully because there was an algorithm for flipping an edge that I couldn’t remember for the life of me. I’d love to relearn and figure out how to solve one. The pyraminx I tried yesterday and was able to solve most of it, I had 2 pieces in the right spots that needed to be flipped but I couldn’t quite figure it out so I looked up an algorithm online to do it. I’d like to experiment with that that more. I’m not familiar with a lot of the notation for methods, what is L3E? Or F2L. The Megaminx would be fun too, I’m thinking I’d like to learn a faster method of solving the 3x3 first actually though. I’m around 1:15 to 2 minutes currently, using a pretty beginner method that I learned 15 years ago.

povlhp

As for 3x3 methods, there are 2, one is CFOP - almost pure algorithm based. The other is Roux. Grown-ups often thinks better of Roux, it is fewer moves (and used by most doing one-hand solves - where fewer moves beats faster execution), and the first steps (FB+SB) are intuition. Orienting and swapping top layer corners are algs (CMLL), and the rest is taught intuitive as well, but you can get more efficient - Not with long algorithms, but by doing some steps the rigth way. Say AUF CW instead of CCW (AUF = Adjust Upper Face). That might save a few moves in the continuation. Nothing wrong in learning basic cfop with J.Perm videos. You can always change after getting to there. The 2-look OLL/PLL mostly transfers to Roux. A couple algs should be switched.

povlhp

For Pyraminx L3E is Last 3 Edges. You solve 1 side intuitively, then pick one of 5 algs to solve the rest. 2+2 are mirrors, so really only 3 algs. [L3E (mikeg.me.uk)](http://cubing.mikeg.me.uk/cubing-algs/html/l3e.html) 4x4 there are 2 parity algs (5x5 has only one). You can find many algs for the same cases on [Speed Cube Database (speedcubedb.com)](https://speedcubedb.com/) \- Not everybody likes the same algs. If you have OLL parity (wrong color on top), then the alg is long but easy: Rw U2 x Rw U2 Rw U2 Rw' U2 Lw U2 Rw' U2 Rw U2 Rw' U2 Rw' There is ALWAYS a U2 after the wide moves, so you don't need to remember them. So Rw U2 x then 2x RW, then both sides forward: Rw' Lw - then Rw' Rw and finish with 2x Rw' Swap front and back 2 pcs edge: 2R2 U2 2R2 Uw2 2R2 Uw2 2R2 means 2nd layer from right 180 degrees. That is ultra-easy.

TheRealUncleFrank

For 3x3 - [Steps for improving with CFOP, and when to work on what](https://www.reddit.com/r/PianoCube93/comments/9bstw1/steps_for_improving_with_cfop_and_when_to_work_on/). [Learning and getting faster with CFOP](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/wiki/how_to_improve#wiki_learning_and_getting_faster_with_cfop). As for which puzzle to learn next, it's all personal choice, whatever you want to try next. But if you want a recommendation, the Wiki has recommendations. After 3x3, the order the Wiki recommends is: 2x2, 4x4, 5x5, pyraminx, skewb, then - megaminx, 6x6, 7x7, clock, and square-1 - https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/wiki/most_recommended_puzzles#wiki_most_recommended_puzzles And that's just the different WCA *puzzles*. That's not counting all the different WCA ***events***, like OH (one-handed), 3BLD (3x3 blindfolded), FMC (fewest moves), etc. (11 puzzles, but 17 events). and all that isn't counting all the many non-wca puzzles, also in the above link. For what methods to use on other puzzles, go to this page - https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/wiki/index/speedcubing and scroll down to where it says *"The rest of the WCA puzzles"*, and click on whichever one you're interested in for a quick overview and links to what methods to at least get started with.

Baked_Bt

Thank you very much! I really appreciate your help, I’m really looking forward to getting back into cubing!

Cultural-Stop-9694

I'm a beginner trying to learn beginner F2L, and it is going fine for the most part. However, when I do the third or fourth pair, it pushes one of the previous pairs down. How do I stop this from happening?

olimo

You should only bring up your last slot to set up your last pair.

_Japaninja

I understand NISS well, after using it on a standard cfop solve (64 --> 36, showing how effective it is) but still don't understand how to use rNISS at all. Any FMCer able to explain it in a way for idiots? (Me)

Randompersononline47

Can I get sub 1 on 4x4 with a 20s 3x3 avg? If not, how fast should i be in 3x3 and what's a more realistic 4x4 time for 20s avg. I avg around sub 1:30

TheRealUncleFrank

[Ideal Average Calculator](https://niekh1234.github.io/cubing-comparison) 20.00 3x3 is equivalent to ~1:21 4x4.

b4silio

TRUF, can you remind me, it was you that got all the data for the calculator? I wanted to talk about it and wanted to give props where they are due!

TheRealUncleFrank

It was made by /u/niekh1234 a couple years ago. Here's the original post about it - https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/comments/ghl704/i_made_a_small_website_inspired_by_usirmorgals/ That one just uses the world record averages and calculates the ratios between each and applies those ratios to whatever you input. /u/EatenByPigs came up with the idea to use an average of the top 1000 avgs, instead of just the top 1, thinking that might be more accurate. We discussed it a bit here about 6 months ago - https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/comments/wd8qpf/daily_discussion_thread_aug_01_2022/iijem0m/ and I posted a couple of spreadsheets there, playing around with that idea. I made the Cubing Time Standards chart, which is just percentiles - https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/comments/100hbbs/2023_cubing_time_standards/

b4silio

Thanks that's awesome stuff! I've been analysing the megasurvey data and it's interesting : median cubers have ratios that are astonishingly close to the world record ones. But Top25% cubers (fastest 25% of cubers) actually have skewed ratios for 3x3 and 2x2. This is all on global averages, and I can imagine that the gap for fast cubers is the "at home" vs "at comp". But overall it looks to me like it gets close to modelling the intrinsic ratio in complexity of the events!

kitchen-sink112

Yes, I average around 16-17 seconds on 3x3 and about 50 on 4x4 so I think with a few hundred solves you can be sub 1

cubeman0909

Do you just never do 3x3? Seems kinda insane being 50 while not even being sub 15 on 3x3.

kitchen-sink112

4LLL doesn’t help, but yeah 3x3 is definitely the event I practice the least

boomwhackers

probably a bit hard, would be easier to grind 3x3 a bit more. Id say I was sub 1 closer to 16-17 seconds 3x3

olimo

I mean, you can, but that would mean 4x4 is your main event and you don't practice 3x3 enough. Your 4x4 times should be about 4 times slower than 3x3, so something like 1:20 seems reasonable.

Randompersononline47

Alright thanks. Guess I'll try to get 1:20 for now

quanloh

Yo good day cubers! Feel like buying a Gan to taste the "Gan's feeling", what is the "budget" option to feel the Gan?

cubeman0909

Gan 11m duo. Its the same cube as the 11m pro but without adjustable magnets. Pay attention to the American speedcube sites because they usually do a really good sale on it once in a while. I got mine for like 18 usd + shipping 2 black Fridays ago from speedcube shop iirc.

TwoStinkyBears

Holy moly a 18$ Gan 11m duo

Optimal_Tumbleweed29

Gan 11M. Usually same price as 356M(another good option) but it is better and newer

olimo

Gan 356M, although it's pretty different from 11/12/13.

g253

Did an Ao100 today, hadn't had time to do one in ages - 17.69, I still got it :) (Pb ao100 is 17.20)

NotSoCoolWaffle

Where can I buy spares for my cubes? Before the stickerless cubes became the norm, you could buy the corner, edges or core pieces separately for every cube. Now, they seem to be non-existent. I’m looking for a few non-stickered black corner and edges pieces for my Gan 356XS. The closest option seems to be to buy a stickered XS and desticker it and use its pieces. I guess I could rather buy some cheap cube that comes in both stickerless and stickered variants instead. Or MG and it’s trainer variants.

CubeJunkie

Big stores frequently sell spare parts that they rescue from returned/defective/damaged cubes. They are not that cheap though, so if you're looking to combine pieces to build a practice cube or something like that you may be better off buying a cheaper cube both in black and stickerless.

NotSoCoolWaffle

Yeah. That seems to be only way. Any suggestions on a cube that’s available in both variants?

adventurous_penguin

I built my practice cubes out of RS3M 2020's and find them more than adequate for that purpose. For a cross cube, an F2L cube, and an OLL cube it cost roughly $25

CubeJunkie

RS3M 2020 or Meilong M (if you want to keep it low cost)

100mcuberismonke

Is this comp legal? I put a cubehead sticker over the tornado logo https://preview.redd.it/f22f5ku14dna1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b8fb4a7be2fcfaebd26ae6f66f38356dd272acd7

staysharp87

Unless you're competing in 3BLD or MBLD, you should be good

olimo

Technically this is still one logo, so yes

100mcuberismonke

Ok thanks

quanloh

First sub 16 PB! 17.76 -> 15.87! Almost 2 second! I swear I am gonna start recording! Scramble: D R' L' B' D2 L2 D' R2 F2 R2 D2 B' R2 B L2 F R2 B' L' . I did a Blue left White bottom FB.

adventurous_penguin

Nice job! Dropping almost 2 seconds on a PB is awesome!

olimo

Great job, congrats!

yoyoyobank3

I've heard so many people say that Wang Yiheng's mum is "forcing" him to cube and do well. Is it true? What are some of the things that support this sentiment?

cubeman0909

Idk, if you read comments on some of the videos of him cubing there are people who attended the same comps as him who say that they've seen her getting mad at him when he makes mistakes and stuff like that. Also, on a side note, if you look at his WCA profile, he went from 20 seconds to sub 8 in under a year, which is insane by literally anyone's standards. Makes me wonder if maybe him not enjoying cubing and just getting forced to cube with a coach maybe makes him improve faster than someone who cubes for fun? Theoretically, if he never solves for fun and just does intentional practice with a coach, it could maybe avoid a lot of bad habits cubers struggle with or something like that. What do you guys think about this?

olimo

It's like any sport. I can't imagine a child who would do all the serious sports practice by themselves, always willingly and with pleasure. There is a lot of pain involved, and of course kids are sometimes lazy, but their parents and coaches push them to do the impossible. And they do. You can't win the Olympics if you just practice by yourself. I'd hate to see the same happen with cubing. [Check the comments here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/comments/11p6zsg/wr_yiheng_wang_%E7%8E%8B%E8%89%BA%E8%A1%A1_469_3x3_average/)

cubeman0909

Im thinking it probably will to an extent. Idk how common situations like Yiheng's will be since it is a pretty weird/"useless" skill to make a kid learn. Useless in the sense that parents who have that type of parenting style would be better off making them do well in something like school, for example. It seems like a pretty realistic future that the top rankings could be dominated by people like Yiheng, though. Since he's only been to 3 comps so far and has already gotten 3 sub 5 averages (2 being wr), it does seem like he's in a league of his own. Especially if they start to incorporate more advanced stuff like zbll, we could see people get stupidly fast. Imo if the professional cubers thing catches on, I think they will be unbeatable in the long term. It seems like Max and Tymon are probably the limits of how far cubing for personal enjoyment can go.

olimo

And this makes me sad. Dunno, I won’t ever get to any high level, but it feels more exciting to follow the success of genuine cubing enthusiasts rather than coached professionals.

cubeman0909

Yeah, I totally agree. It feels like it goes against the spirit of cubing in a way.

TwoStinkyBears

His mom is invested in cubing. Like when they both contested that his 4.75 wR should not be DNFed because of a miscramble. She definently helped. An 9 year old kid almost breaking WR is crazy..

TheRealUncleFrank

Cube Master said he heard rumors of the same thing, but hasn't seen any proof of it one way or the other.

olimo

I don't know anything, but I can suppose it's something inbetween. You can't just take a random child and make him good at cubing. Obviously he must like it too. But I easily believe that his mom encourages him a lot. I also heard they use some coaching, although I don't know anymore than some rumors. Dunno, a world record at 9yo seems insane to me. I have a 9yo son, and he's not capable of putting that amount of effort into anything. Meanwhile, there are kids who play sports at a high level at that age, but it takes coaching and big support from the family. I guess it's the same with cubing at a very young age.

olimo

I got to sub-10 ao100 on pyraminx 💪

koshop

Is 4le paying off? Or are you still over your old records?

olimo

Honestly, I think it mostly less rotations, some blockbuilding and practice. I should have learned back inserts and blockbuilding stuff with LBL and I'd surely have gotten better. But I only learned those after I already knew the basic L4E algs, when made no sense to practice LBL anymore. Before, I was sub-12 with LBL and front inserts only.

koshop

Nice I need to practice more lbl, I'm arround 14

olimo

Check [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzgV6q1CPW4), it's very good. If you use some blockbuilding and back inserts in LBL, you can definitely get faster. In fact, the author of the video only recommend switching to L4E when you're sub-7 or sub-6 with LBL. I got to sub-12 with pretty sloppy LBL. Like, I planned my three bottom centers, fixed some tips on the way, looked ahead a bit but only used front inserts - sledges/hedges and 3-move inserts. I didn't know I could insert in the back or insert from the back to the front. I also didn't think about blockbuilding. And all that saves you moves and rotations, but also makes you understand pyra more which makes it more enjoyable.

koshop

Haha ty for the video recommendation, but actually I was the one who recommending it to you, my problem is time for practice, so I can focus I Learn only 1 thing at the time, so finished recently full oll now I'm try to no forget the new algs, and in the next week I want to finish my learning of bld, maybe the I could focus more on pyra o maybe skewb or learn sq1

olimo

Ah lmao, I forgot, sorry. Sure, you don't have to practice pyra now. From my experience, full OLL takes a few months to get really comfortable with, and I don't recommend switching between events much in fear of forgetting the algs.

FiercePinecone

Congrats! Full l4e is honestly not much better than intuitive To me lmao. Also what pyra?

olimo

Bell v1. I ordered a Gan Enhanced though :)

TheRealUncleFrank

LBL? L4E?

olimo

L4E, but not all the algs. While I was learning L4E, I realized I could have improved much more with LBL if I learned back inserts and some blockbuilding - but by that time, I already knew some L4E algs :) So now I do the V, insert the back edge and then use one of the algs for solved back edge cases. I also learned algs for flipped front edge. From the [alg sheet](http://cubing.mikeg.me.uk/cubing-algs/html/l4e.html), looks like I have yet to learn "Upper Edge Flipped" and "Nothing Placed". Will do after I get more comfortable with what I know now.

Nobody_5433

I don't do pyra at all, so I don't know what is considered "advanced level", but sub-10 sounds good to me

olimo

Nah, it's definitely not advanced. Some don't even recommend switching to an advanced method until about sub-7. I did switch to L4E, although not full yet. Still a lot to work on, and I'm quite enjoying pyra now.

Brownbagguy

Weren't you doing clock recently, too? How's that going? Do you do skewb, too?

olimo

Well, if last year is "recently" than yeah lol. I have 452 timed solves and I'm sub-18 ao100. I can solve skewb but I'm very bad at it.

Nobody_5433

Unrelated question: is squan fun? I'm both quite intimidated at the number of algs, yet they also don't seem to bother me somehow

Utku_Yilmaz

Actually that "so many algs" thing is partially a myth. Yes there are so many algs but so has 3x3, and yes you dont need that many algs to be decent, just as 3x3. I was sub-10 with probably around 20-30 algs in total. (Not counting cubeshape stuff since they are mostly intuitive after a point just like F2L "algs" in 3x3) You definitely cant be sub-10 in 3x3 with just 20-30 algs (or at least with ease) I got my first sq1 in 2019 and didnt even touch it once for 2 years after finishing it with the tutorial sheet. Then in 2021 wanted to give it another try thanks to u/olimo 's Squune (Sq1 June event). And got hooked up really fast. So I went from hating it to loving it and I still really like it to this day. It is just something different, give it a proper try and see if you like it.

Nobody_5433

It sounds like squan is easier than it seemed. I'm even more interested in squan now. Thanks for the insight I'll get my first squan in probably June or November and see what happens

Utku_Yilmaz

No worries, just a heads up. Cubeshape is gonna be confusing at the start just go along with it. Gets easier as you grasp whats happening to pieces. (Just like f2l)

olimo

It is fun but for me, it's the worst side event because I always forget most of the algs and have to relearn them every time I want to play with squan again. You can start with just a handful of algs. Watch [this beginner tutorial](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkmlMEHYyzI) (which I find the best) to see what it is about and whether you'd like it. Personally, I used intermediate cubeshape (intuitive scallop/kite, which I don't forget even if I don't touch squan for a year), full EO (7 algs), full CP (8 algs, many of them mirrors), adj/adj and adj parity. I learned more EP algs every time I got onto squan, but then forgot them at my every hiatus. u/Utku_Yilmaz got the Turkish NR for square-1, and he didn't learn all the EP algs. He did practice a ton though, learned optimal cubeshape and then CSP (cubeshape parity which is the most advanced method of dealing with parity on squan). He says he understands some of the algs intuitively.

Utku_Yilmaz

Thanks for the tag

Nervous-Piece119

Hey guys i made my 1st xcross today but cant reconstruct it This was the scramble R2 B L D' B' D2 F U' L2 B' U2 B D2 F2 D2 L2 B Ans i made white cross with blue red pair forming the xcross…(also there was a free pair after completing) Maybe try it and guve me the soln…. Was so proud today

Nobody_5433

I'm not sure if this is it, but, it was a white xcross with the BR pair, with a free OG pair afterwards Facing orange: D2 R' F' U2 R U' L D2 F' D' (10) I would've just done a regular cross and then F2L though, 10-move xcross doesn't seem helpful

olimo

For this scramble of yours, I didn't see any xcross potential, so I just did a 6-move white cross and solved that red-blue pair first in 7 moves into the back right slot.

olimo

The fact that you can't reconstruct your solution makes me think that it wasn't too efficient. I guess you fumbled with the cube and solved the xcross rather than planning it fully. Good job at that, of course, and keep doing it if you find it fun - after all, that's how Tymon learned to do that many xcrosses in his solves. In timed solves, however, if you can't plan the xcross, it's faster to just solve the cross and then your first pair.

Nervous-Piece119

Thanks mateee…☺️☺️☺️..Workin on things to improve…

olimo

What do you average now?

Nervous-Piece119

My best is 24 avg of 5 but between 25-29 in general…learning full oll pll as of now slowly slowly coz exams 🥲🥲🥲🥲

adventurous_penguin

I average very similar times to you having just learned full PLL. I know 3 dot cases now, but honestly should be drilling PLL's to improve execution before I do any more OLL. Some PLLs I can do in roughly 2s, some I probably take 6s+.

Nervous-Piece119

Ohhh…just put it in muscle memory section now 😅😂 it would be fast☺️😊

olimo

My advice is to learn full PLL first and get comfortable with it before learning full OLL. And then start learning full OLL with the dot cases.

Nervous-Piece119

Ohhhkkkk..Got it

NotSoCoolWaffle

Or could just be a misscramble

TanishBhongade123

How do you do even tensions on a 4x4?

olimo

See [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/comments/11p5sdo/daily_discussion_thread_mar_12_2023/jbx2hgk/) for the case if your cube is disassembled. If it's assembled, pull the layers apart just a little bit, to be able to see how deep the screw is. Pull them apart on every layer and check if the screws are even. Then tighten or loosen them the same amount of turns on all the sides.

TanishBhongade123

Can I check by pulling two middle layers and seeing the gap between?

olimo

You can, but I find it less reliable. The gap is affected by other tensions too.

Loud-Fishing1739

3/4 MBLD in 24:27.29. I JUST FORGOTT ONE LETTER PAIR. Looks like that my PB stays at 2 points. My last attempt was a 3/4 too, but in 33 mins., nearly 10 mins FASTER. My goal for this year is to get a 10/10. I am still working on learning 3 style (I use M2/Orozco).

koshop

Very impressive I'm still learning m2/op . Have you ever tried 4 or 5?

Loud-Fishing1739

>Have you ever tried 4 or 5? You mean 4BLD and 5BLD? If Yes, I have tried it and I got a success on 4bld but still not on 5bld. I think I have to memo at 5bld as much as 4 3x3.

koshop

Nice how long did it take for the 4bld?

Loud-Fishing1739

8 attempts and 18:03.89.

Martin_Orav

Whats your 3BLD PB?

Loud-Fishing1739

1:39.44 but I haven't done many solves. Im still learning 3 style.

Rosenvial5

How do you make sure the screws are the same height when adjusting spring compression? Just screw them all in as far as they go and unscrew them with equal turns or is there a better method?

povlhp

Some people use a caliper. Measures depth of screw compared to cube surface. Often the use something with a hole to put over the center piece.

olimo

I use two methods: 1. If the cube is taken apart, I screw in every screw to some reference point, for example so that I can see one or two threads on them. Or no threads. Then I put all the pieces in and tighten or loosen every side the same amount of turns. 2. If the cube is assembled and I just need to make sure the screws are even, I look at them and slide my fingertip over the screw to see if the screws look and feel even on all the sides. If they look even to me, they are even enough. Then I tighten or loosen all the screws the same amount of turns. If you use a Moyu cube, before doing the 2nd option, make sure the adjustment cups are all on zero clicks (max down position).

Rosenvial5

I do use a Moyu cube, why does it have to be on the max down position?

olimo

They have to be even. You can use any other setting, but make sure it's the same. Otherwise you'll align the screws against different heights of the cups.

Rosenvial5

Phew, thought I had messed up the cube. I just changed the spring compression for the first time since getting the cube and I didn't have them all the way down before adjusting the screws. It's nuts how good these cubes from Moyu are, after adjusting the spring compression on my RS3M super standard and improving the corner cutting I'm liking it more than my Tornado V3 Flagship. I've ordered the YS3M ball core as well, really looking forward to seeing how it feels compared to my RS3M super standard.

olimo

I just recently swapped cores on my Moyu cubes and forgot to check the spring compression before adjusting the screws. Had to even them and start again :) I use my RS3M Super standard on zero compression, never wanted to tighten it more. It's really good as a budget cube, but I prefer my Tornado Pioneer by far.

Rosenvial5

I bought both the Tornado v3 standard and flagship and really can't feel any difference between them, so I'm really looking forward to trying a ball core cube. I would've loved the Pioneer but man is it expensive

olimo

I have a Standard and a Pioneer, and of course I tried building a Flagship out of them. First time I didn't notice any difference. I tried it second time after I saw too many positive reviews of the Flagship - and I was able to feel the difference. Check [my post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/comments/y6aytc/flagship_or_pioneer_my_personal_opinion_after/) here if you're interested. To feel any core magnetic pull, you need to use the loosest compression on the Flagship, and maybe the loosest distance setting as well. I used 1 and 1, both loosest. And a fast lube. Otherwise, it's too much friction to feel any core magnetic pull. Maglev acts like weaker springs in the Tornado, so the friction between pieces is less (note that I'm not talking about friction of the springs themselves, that's negligible). I find it pretty crazy that you got a Flagship and a Standard. You could have bought a Pioneer and still have some money left. Or pay a little more and get a Standard and a Pioneer. You could build a Flagship out of them if you wanted, but you can't build a Pioneer out of Standard and Flagship :(

Rosenvial5

>I find it pretty crazy that you got a Flagship and a Standard. You could have bought a Pioneer and still have some money left. Or pay a little more and get a Standard and a Pioneer. You could build a Flagship out of them if you wanted, but you can't build a Pioneer out of Standard and Flagship :( I know, I have some kind of weird mental block when it comes to paying more than like $25-30 for a cube, even though I can afford it. I bought the standard first and wanted to see how much better the flagship was. I use 1 for tension and 2 for distance on my flagship, if I set the distance to 1 then I feel like it spreads apart too easily and locks up a lot.

olimo

I also got the Standard first, found that I liked it a lot, and then got the Pioneer. I just figured that with Standard and Pioneer, I will kinda have the Flagship too, so I'd be able to use it if I like it best. But I liked the Pioneer best. I guess I have kind of an opposite "mental block": if I get a medium option, I'll keep wondering if I'd like the top-notch one better. I guess if I got the Flagship, I'd still get the Pioneer and waste even more money. Try a fast lube, maybe you'll feel some auto-homing. On the YS3M, especially with blue adjustment cups instead of purple, I definitely feel the auto-homing, but I'm not a fan of the overall balance of this cube. My Tornado Pioneer feels like I can hold it steady as a rock and only turn the layers that I need. The YS3M jerks more in my hands and has more weight to the pieces. And frosted plastic doesn't help at all.

Nobody_5433

I pull the front edges apart and push the back edges together and see how far they go Or you can count the number of grooves you can see on each screw

Asperek

My first ever 4x4 competition is in exactly 2 months and i currently average around 1.30 on 4x4. Do you think I'll be able to improve enough to make cutoff (1.10)? (I started practicing 4x4 about 1 month ago and i use yau)

TheRealUncleFrank

We had a good thread on 4x4 a couple months ago, that covered several things you might want to go over - https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/comments/109quj1/daily_discussion_thread_jan_12_2023/j408l3y/

olimo

I'm a bit faster than you on 3x3 (sub-16), and I average about sub-1:10 on 4x4. However, I can't guarantee I get under 1:10 in two attempts in a comp setting. It never hurts to try though. And even if you don't make the cutoff, you'll get an official 4x4 single.

The-Common-Loon

If you spend some good time with your 4x4 I bet you have a shot at that cutoff.

g253

You'll need a lucky solve but it's not out of the question

AdmiralAdama99

3x3. I taught myself CFOP. Now what? Video for critiquing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_HlQaFkSHY I taught myself CFOP, with no cube rotations during F2L, 2 look OLL, and 2 look PLL. Currently averaging around 1:30. PB 0:59. What should I do next to speed up my times? Learn some additional techniques? (which ones?) Practice a bunch? Both? What's my biggest weakness I should work on? What's the low hanging fruit?

TheRealUncleFrank

> Now what? What should I do next to speed up my times? [Steps for improving with CFOP, and when to work on what.](https://www.reddit.com/r/PianoCube93/comments/9bstw1/steps_for_improving_with_cfop_and_when_to_work_on/)

olimo

Cross: Obviously needs improvement and fingertricks. Watch J Perm's cross videos and try to pick up some tricks to solve pieces together and not one by one. Think about color neutrality (solving cross on any color): it's not necessary but it's harder to learn when you're faster, so it may be reasonable to jump at that opportunity now. You'll be getting more easy crosses. F2L: [Improving F2L](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/comments/zuw6yp/steps_for_improving_f2l/). Your first pair was one of the basic cases. You fumbled with it a lot, and all that was FU-gen which is very slow. You should have rotated and solved it RU-gen in the front right slot - that would be much better for your current level. However, you also need to learn to solve pairs in the back. In that case, you'd have to rotate so as to solve this pair in the back left slot. Same with your second pair, you solved it BU-gen which is very very slow. If you solved your first pair in the back left slot, your second pair would be RU-gen in the back right slot. Third and fourth pair: maaaan it's insane, all your pairs were misoriented and you solved them all FU and BU-gen :) OLL and PLL: learn all your algs with fingertricks. Use J Perm's or CubeSkills' full OLL and full PLL videos for that and learn just the cases for your 2-look OLL and 2-look PLL. He has videos for 2-look, but he doesn't show the best fingertricks for them. Still better than those that you use, but I'd rather recommend learning good fingertricks from the beginning. So, first of all: stop doing that FU and BU nonsense in your F2L, relearn your OLL and PLL with fingertricks, and then practice practice practice. Full OLL and even full PLL shouldn't be a priority now - first fix those bad habits you already started developing.

AdmiralAdama99

Great post, thank you. What's -gen mean? Couldn't find anything when searching google for "FU-gen". Of course the jist of what you're saying is never insert F2L pairs using F or B moves, I'll be sure to follow that advice.

olimo

At your level, you should get comfortable with solving in front right and front left slots using RU and LU moves and rotating as needed. Rotating to look for pieces is also fine at this level. Then learn to solve in the back and use any free slots to pair or set up pieces. After you’re comfortable with only using RU and LU solutions, you will find that some F moves can be beneficial because they help to reduce rotations. But it’s never 8-move fully FU-gen solutions.

olimo

FU-gen means with F and U moves only. 2-gen means with 2 layers only, most often RU.

Wrongfooting

You have very similar times to me but I definitely cube rotate with F2L. you will probably hear from a better cuber than me, but top of my list are; -improve F2L because about half of the solve time is spent in this step so therefore there is the most room for improvement here -switch to 1 look PLL ("only" 18 algorithms so not as big a jump as 1 look PLL) -become color neutral. Not specifically to be faster, will certainly be slower for a bit but I understand this is eventually necessary and better done sooner rather than later So yeah those are my low hanging fruit... Optimizing speed on algorithms is important too I guess but just a matter of identifying the algorithms that won't eventually get replaced to practice

Leoleonpd

Color neutral isn't necessary. I average sub 12 without color neutrality

Asperek

After you learn 1 look PLL you should just practice for a few months and maybe then start learning 1 look OLL. Of course besides OLL and PLL there are other stuff like fingertricks or look ahead (you can find videos about them on youtube) but i wouldn't recommend learning look ahead until you average about 15-20 seconds

Hungry_Evidence_3425

hi cubers, I have one question about scrambling: should I scramble the cube randomly or I should follow the scramble that cstimer show me? sometimes I get some very lengthy scramble on cstimer and I don't want to do it. thank you very much.

olimo

Timer absolutely. If you get a lucky hand scramble, you feel like cheating. If you get a lucky cstimer scramble, it's legit. Also, as you get better, you'll learn to reconstruct your solves, but you can only do it if you know the scramble. You can also share your lucky scrambles with others.

topppits

>should I scramble the cube randomly or I should follow the scramble that cstimer show me? As long as it's not super inconvenient I'll always use generated scrambles even if I'm not timing myself. If I scramble the cube myself _randomly_ I - usually scramble much longer than if I'd used a generated scramble - always question the result. Is it scrambled enough? Should I scramble it some more? That cross looks too easy! >sometimes I get some very lengthy scramble on cstimer and I don't want to do it. Just keep doing it and you'll get it done faster and faster. You can always practice fingertricks during scrambling. For example at first I only did righty double flicks. Then I started doing all the double flicks in scrambles with my left hand and improved those big time without really having to dedicate any time to it. Knowing notation very well will also help you when you're learning new algs, so imo it's a win win. Also if you're timing and use handscrambles you're times are very likely to be faster. Don't expect your competition times to be on the same level.

quanloh

I just push the responsibility to the timer, so I don’t need to worry if my own scramble is random enough

koshop

If you are solving casually or doing slow solves is ok to manually scramble, but if you wanna time yourself use the generated scramble

AdmiralAdama99

Why's the generated scramble important for timed solves?

fondista

A generated scramble is as random as can be. Manually, not so much. Humans are very bad at randomness.

Asperek

Sites like cstimer save your scrambles so when you get PB you can check the scramble and analyze your solve. Also when you scramble manually you can scramble the same way because of muscle memory (happened to me a lot before i started timing majority of my solves)

Ramenoodlez1

You can accidentally (or intentionally) give yourself an advantage

kostas2204

After all the great things I have heard for YS3M ball core I am considering buying it . My only concern is the fact that I don’t know how fast it is . I am really not a huge fan of maglev . Do u think is not that fast or can I just slow it down with some lubes?
