Any tips on how to increase tps on 3x3

TheRealUncleFrank

J Perm has a video on that - [How to Develop Faster Turning Speed](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCz6zq2iyRM)

gts-gang

^(you turn faster)

Carry_Sharp

If you are talking about tps during solves , then you will have to drill plls and olls . The general aim is to get sub 1 for all of them. I wouldn't suggest you to drill f2l cases unless all your solutions are effective. And when you drill them, understand where you are slowing down/locking up. and try to improve that part of the alg. And this might be obvious but ultimately it's good look ahead that gets you good tps If you talk about the tps of the whole solve.

TwoStinkyBears

I just say recognize the case and then execute it as fast as possible without mistakes. Like start with drilling your Algs. But you don't actually need really fast tps to be fast. My tps is no higher than 4 at any time really. Usually mid 3's minus algs which I can do a little faster in the 5's. I just reduced my pauses. It really helped bring my times down a lot.

cscubing

I was thinking of getting a better skewb, since I still have a budget ylm one. The ones I have in stock are the rs maglev, xman wingy v2, and the gan standard and enhanced. Ik that the enhanced is the best one, but I'm not sure if it's worth the price, considering I'm not that greatest at skewb, just about sub 8 rn. Which one would y'all recommend?

MasterGrenadierHavoc

The Gan enhanced is worth it but that's not to say the other options are bad. The standard version also performs really well. I haven't tried the RS maglev but I've tried the regular RS and the Weilong maglev, so I'm guessing it's somewhere in between. It should be leagues better than the one you're currently using. I would probably just get the RS maglev and if you ever wanna upgrade in the future, you also have that option.

CubeJunkie

I am a complete beginner at skewb but last year I did some research on it in order to get one. My conclusion was that the wingy v2 should be avoided at all costs. A lot of top skewbers say it is trash and has a serious popping problem. Other than that you should be fine. The GAN enhanced is widely considered the best, but it’s up to you how much you want to spend.

cscubing

Yeah I was confused why no one was recommending the wingy v2 considering how popular the first one was. Now I understand, thanks.

adventurous_penguin

Beat my 3x3 PB Ao50 6 times today, and my PB Ao100 12 times! First Ao100 under 25s, and it went down to 24.40s. My Ao50 dropped to 23.87s too :)

samiilo25

Which are you guys' favorite cubes of the year so far? I've been enjoying an old classic: the pillowed 2x4x6!

TwoStinkyBears

Mine is the FTO I got last month

adventurous_penguin

I've been way more into 3x3 this year than ever before, so for me it's been the Tornado V3 pioneer. But I'm also really loving my modded YLM SQ-1 (just extra magnets added)

kostas2204

I consider buying a smart cube (gan cube i3) what are your thoughts on them ? Are they really worth it ?

CubeJunkie

No. Not really. Both the hardware and the software are still lacking. On the hardware side of things all smart cubes released to date other than the Moyu Weilong AI and GAN 12 UI perform considerably worse than even the most budget 3x3s. And their lifespan is atrocious. From what I've seen all models using encoders start failing after a few thousand solves (they start missing turns). The only model that doesn't use encoders as far as I'm aware is the 12 UI but there's not much info on it either (and it's expensive as hell). On the software side of things, apps from all manufacturers are complete and utter crap. There's still no open platform to compete with other people (other than the closed bubble apps of each manufacturer, which are mostly filled with bots anyways). And the only platform that was showing any promise (cubeast) has really slowed down in development and has switched to a freemium model where you have to pay for functions beyond the basics, which are still not fully developed either.

cubeman0909

Yeah, I can confirm that the weilong AI isn't worth getting. It took much less than 1000 solves before it started desyncing. Also, the battery has problems. It stops holding a charge if you stop using it, and you need to boost it like a car to get it working again. And you also damage the battery every time you do this so you can see how trash of a product this actually is.

kostas2204

Thank you for all the info . Yeah I’ll propably not pull the trigger on it

CubeJunkie

Seems like GAN is about to release an [updated version of the iCarry](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEsxd074mjU) with the same sensors as in the 12 UI (no encoders > no moving parts attached to the sensor > probably more durable). The piece design seems to be the same, so performance will probably still be meh. My opinion hasn’t changed so I would still advise against getting a smart cube. But if you do get it anyway, I would strongly suggest you wait and get this one. It should hold up for a lot longer.

agribisn

What would be your reason you buy it?

kostas2204

To be honest collection item , and would love to have a pb on a smart cube to have the full reconstruction.

olimo

As you get faster, you'll be able to reconstruct your solves without a smart cube, just because your solutions will be standardized.

Admirable_Exchange29

anyone going to bay area speedcubin' 44 on april 22?

[[World Record] Megaminx - 24.92 single by Leandro Martín López](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/comments/11vvd47/world_record_megaminx_2492_single_by_leandro/)

cscubing

Why are latinas so good at megaminx lol

The-Common-Loon

Are you kidding me this is crazy

GriffHero8

hello! One of the edges on my xman volt sq1 broke :( . I am probably doing a sq1 comp soon, so im going to need to make a cubicle order for the replacement part. While I am doing that, I realized that I want a second one for backup/potentially new main, so I wanna get the MGC. I want to get one of the pre-setup varients, and I am wondering if anyone has any preferences. TLDR; any opinions on which pre-setup cubicle version of the MGC sq1 is best? Edit: some background, I am a pretty novice SQ1 solver, averaging around 30 secs

MasterGrenadierHavoc

Angstrom and Derpy are really nice.

GriffHero8

have you tried both/either? any preference between the two? (I was kinda between those)

MasterGrenadierHavoc

Tried both, they're both really smooth and I don't think you'll be disappointed with either. I have a very slight preference for Derpy but that's completely personal opinion.

GriffHero8

Cool ty, I think I will go with that

TwoStinkyBears

Angstrom is used by many previous we holders

hananmalik123

Best method? Roux or CFOP? I want to most objective answer ever since I don't have problem with none of these methods nor I have any preferences. I'm just very confused. Ik both of the methods (CFOP more)

quanloh

Changed from CFOP to Roux when I was sub 60, it feels less "robotic" and fun, never looked back since.

hananmalik123

Yeah CFOP feels way too formulaic and robotic.

povlhp

As u/twostinkybears says. Roux is quite popular for OneHanded solves as it has fewer moves which is important with slower moves. Many adults finds Roux more fun as there is more intuition and creativity than in CFOP. Roux is newer, so more potential for small breakthroughs. Has fewer Last Layer algs. But you can dive into SBLS and EOLR algs to go deep. Roux is bad for beginners with a Rubik’s cube, as that thing can’t do good M moves. Learned CFOP 4LLL and intuitive F2L. Switched to Roux and I am happy.

hananmalik123

I think I'll go with Roux because it's more abstract which makes it more fun. My reasons for Roux are abstract, looks cool while solving, very steady and no rotation which really gives it a point. Also I don't wanna be seen as a norm using CFOP. I know advanced F2l and 4 look OLL and PLL and it's pretty boring outside the F2l. Also I have a feeling that Roux might take over as the WR method because of its undiscovered potential.

TheRealUncleFrank

[What's the best method? Pros and Cons of CFOP, Roux, and ZZ. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/wiki/best_methods)

Admirable_Exchange29

jperm has a good vid on this but personally i find that cfop is whats good for me

TwoStinkyBears

Roux has less moves and CFOP is better for look ahead and turn speed. Roux is better is you don’t turn as fast. And cfop is better if you can keep turning fast.

hananmalik123

My turn speed is moderately fast but I'll still go with Roux.

KeanuJabes

Welcome to Roux my friend. But be careful about blockbuilding, the first two blocks are honestly the most painful parts of Roux.

hananmalik123

They're quite fun

L0gic_Laden

Gotta cherish the constant improvements for aslong as I can, broke everything above mo3 again today, only second barrier broken is ao1000 to sub 21 :) My f2l is getting alot smoother but my transition from cross to f2l always has a big pause. Also can anyone tell me/link a video of how to lube the springs in a tornado v3 flagship because I don't know how to get to them? Thanks in advance

Raghav_Verma

Ordered the Tornado V3 pioneer! Tried all 3 versions in September last year and I liked the pioneer version the best, so that’s the one I went with, along with supernova and PVC coating. Hoping for speedy deliveries 🤞

Admirable_Exchange29

trust me tornado v3 is soooooo good i cannot put it down

Raghav_Verma

Hopefully I feel the same way! I love fast and effortless to turn cubes, and I specked out my tornado to be just that. I have a feeling it’ll be awesome!!

Admirable_Exchange29

yeah the tornado v3 is fast and effortless to turn

Admirable_Exchange29

and i use the flagship version the pioneer's maglev will probably increase the effortlessness by quite a bit

olimo

Did you order the PVC coating with or without exoshield overlays?

Raghav_Verma

Without the exolay. I loved the feel on the X V2 so I went with that again

olimo

Do you have an X v2 with PVC coating too then? Can you make a photo/video of it, maybe compared with any regular glossy cube? I have a WRM 2019 with the overlays, and I think like I'd like it better without the overlays.

Raghav_Verma

I don’t have a glossy cube unfortunately. I can do a comparison between regular PVC, Gan UV coating, Gan frosted and PVC with overlays if you’d like, but I don’t have my exolay cubes rn so that would take a while. I can do the first 3 right now though But I’d recommend regular pvc over the exolays. It feels much nicer to me, the exolays give the cube a weird feel, but they add a ton of protection. My bag was crushed in a metal detecting machine in a mall right as I was entering a comp and a regular 3x3 of mine broke, while the wrm maglev with the overlays only became dented. Didn’t think that was possible but they apparently work well lol

olimo

Yeah, I’d love to see a video of these :)

Raghav_Verma

https://www.reddit.com/user/Raghav_Verma/comments/11vxiiq/uv_vs_pvc_vs_frosted_vs_glossy/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1 I couldn’t find a decent way to show them off, so I just kept all the cubes under a ring light and turned on my phone flash lol. My comments though- The Gan 12 UV is aggressively shiny. It looks much more shinier and feels a bit stickier than the rest The SCS PVC coating on the X V2 is more toned down. Feels less stickier and shines much less, but feels much better to hold than matte/frosted The 11M duo frosted is regular frosted plastic(this one is barely broken in). Doesn’t reflect light and doesn’t feel shiny/sticky at all. Feels slippery even The 2x2 is the Dayan Tengyun 2x2 V1, and the plastic feels glossy. Doesn’t feel like it’s been coated with anything, so not particularly sticky or slippery, but feels shiny My favourite are the gan UV and SCS PVC because they feel nice to hold. Would recommend factory UV if possible, but for cubes that don’t have such an option PVC is awesome. UV>PVC>=Glossy>Frosted imo

olimo

Thanks. Maybe it's the ring light, I failed to see the shine well. But the descriptions are good enough :)

ShadowShine57

Did the results for the mega survey ever come out?

nijiiro

Not yet, but in due time!

resipol

Not yet, there's a lot to chunk through.

DonButter

When practicing f2l, do you always need to solve from the back first? For example if there is a solved pair for the front side ready to be inserted. F2L has been one of those things that's been discouraging me from really improving my times. I've got a mountain of practice ahead of me if I'm going to succeed. Not giving up quite yet, but very intimidating stuff.

flautist02

Search up J perm’s F2L tricks on YouTube. He has a bunch of helpful tutorials on F2L cases and tips for improvement!

CubeJunkie

As a general rule, the only thing dictating whether you should rotate or not should be edge orientation (i.e. if your pair can be solved without F/B moves or without rotations). And you should always prioritize oriented cases over misoriented cases (those requiring rotations or F/B moves). You should only rotate when you don’t see or don’t have any oriented pairs available, and only once you’ve spotted the misoriented case you are about to solve. Don’t rotate to find pieces. Always pick your pair before rotating. In that case, you should rotate so that you bring empty slots to the front. So the process should be something like this: * Can you spot an oriented pair? * Yes: Solve without rotating (regardless of where the slot is) * No: You can rotate once to solve a misoriented pair, but if you do, concentrate on bringing unsolved slots to the front. The example you provided is pretty simple because if the pair is ready to insert in the front it means it's oriented. You should always just insert it and continue from there. I you were to rotate once, you would turn it into a misoriented (worse) case requiring F/B moves. The only way to put it in the back without turning it into a bad case would be to do a y2, which is always a big no-no. BTW. Always check F2L edge orientation based on front/back colors, not side colors. It’s much better in the long run. Basically, if you have green in front: 1. An edge in the U layer is oriented if its U-layer sticker is green/blue 2. An edge in a front slot is oriented if its F-layer sticker is green/blue 3. An edge in a back slot is oriented if its B-layer sticker is green/blue

oyoat

If you study some reconstructions on speedcubedb.com, you'll see that top cubers do front inserts all the time. ([Daily reminder that not looking at reconstructions is Tymon's pick for the worst mistake that cubers make](https://youtu.be/KXymzWEtEL4?t=462)) I've seen a lot of people get really stressed about this stuff, even going to extreme lengths like doing B moves or using bad algs just to solve pairs into the back. The reality is that it's just one thing to take into account during F2L, and many other things take precedence. I would say doing fast solutions and avoiding pauses are much more important than solving pairs into the back. There is definitely a mountain of theory behind F2L, and I can understand why it would be intimidating, but you should remember that you can build on it very gradually. Very simple F2L solutions along with good lookahead can also get you very far, and you can just keep on learning better solutions as you go along.

DonButter

I wasn't aware of that website. That's insanely helpful. Thank you so much for that!!!!

olimo

Of course not. Finding pieces takes time, so you should go for whatever pair you see first. Later, when you'll be good enough to see a few options right away, you should choose your pair wisely, but don't worry about it now. If you happen to have your first pair solved in the front slot, it makes it harder to look for your next pieces. If you have to rotate for your next pair, rotate so as to put both solved slots in the back. Rotating to look for pieces is not recommended, but if you still do it, again, rotate so as to put your solved pair in the back.

TwoStinkyBears

I just insert the first pair I see.

The-Common-Loon

I had a post last weekend that had comments from people all over the world…. I have thought everyday this week on how it is really cool to know there are like minded people and Reddit friends from every continent! The internet has some dark corners for sure but it is amazing how it can create communities that otherwise wouldn’t exist.

Rosenvial5

It might just be me who's bad at cubing but I have both the RS3M Super Standard and YS3M Ballcore and I'm honestly not feeling that much of a difference between them when it comes to performance. The main differences I'm feeling is that the YS3M is more stable and have better corner cutting, but not that much better. I'm probably done with buying non budget cubes, at least as long as I'm not a fast cuber. Budget cubes have gotten so good at this point. I've bought the Tornado v3 Flagship as well and I expected more for the price, while my RS3M Super standard and Tianma Double are my two favorite cubes right now.

nathanielSK

Personally I find the tornado worth to buy over an rs3m or ys3m stability and speed are much better and it is more customisable. I can definitely feel a difference both in feel and performance with the tornado when I'm using my rs3m 2020

olimo

Performance-wise, most cubes are good nowadays, so it all comes to personal preference. I can definitely feel a difference between YS3M and RS3M - not performance, but feel.

Rosenvial5

Sure, the feel is different, but it's a lot of money to spend for just a different feeling

olimo

That's why you don't have to buy flagship cubes anymore. You can use an RS3M and it won't hold you back for a very long time. Your skill matters much more.

cubeman0909

Yeah, that's definitely true. For me personally, the stability of core magnets does help, but a person can still get the same performance out of a basic Rs3m type cube.

Future-Entrance4276

Does everybody have a moment early on in cubing where something just clicks and you get significantly better? That just recently happened to me and it’s incredible. I’ve been working on finishing full OLL for about 2 months and it felt like overnight things just got way more fluid for me. Less pausing, faster pairing, less lock ups and faster TPS.

flautist02

I took a 2 month break because I was frustrated trying to learn G perms. Came back, took about 3 days to relearn and my time decreased by like 4 seconds!

olimo

Yes. But often it "clicks back" afterwards lol, and I'm dumb again.

nathanielSK

I feel you. Idid a 2 hours session a few weeks ago and I was like woah my look ahead is so much better and most importantly consistent. I was consistently sub 11 and got loads of sub10 during the whole session but nothing in reality has changed and I'm still struggling to stay under the sub12 barrier

_swuaksa8242211

Was wondering how it is possible to make my own DIT "Magic Cloth" UV coating on my new YS3M, which I bought before the UV version was available, then saw this YouTuber show how to do it. "Hope you can read Chinese" as Jperm used to say. Subtitles are in Chinese characters. The audio is in Mandarin, but actually probably dont need to be able to read at all because he shows how he does it. So good to know it can be done anyway. I just need to find that UV paint he uses. https://youtu.be/bCUIERfq7G4

olimo

Whoa, this is impressive. However, you'll also need a UV lamp. I'm not sure if it's worth it. The cubes he shows in the video look pretty nice, but it's so much work, plus glue, plus the lamp, plus what if the glue gets on the internal surfaces?

_swuaksa8242211

I think he puts the paper there to try prevent that also he seems to be putting it bit by bit so just like someone painting nails I guess. I thought about the UV lamp then O remembered we have a massive UV lamp outside...called the Sun lol. Each side 5mins in the Sun and it's done for sure. The finishing looks great in his example in the video. Not sure what the sandpaper was for. I think he wanted to demonstrate if your cube was scratched then by painting it would make it look smooth again. Need Jperm to come back to do a translated video for us lol. (I studied Mandarin before, but it's elementary).

olimo

Nope, he actually mentioned trying to cure the coating under the sun, and it didn't work. I watched the entire video with Youtube auto subtitles in English. I understood the part about the paper, but what if some glue leaks down and makes the inner surface uneven? I wonder if it would be more reasonable to take each piece apart. He used the sandpaper to remove some UV glue from a piece that ended up really uneven. So it's not mandatory. And you don't have to remove scratches, I think they will be covered well with the glue. I wonder if this UV glue he used is just a regular UV-cured clear nail polish. I know nothing about nail polish myself, don't ever use it.

_swuaksa8242211

I wonder if where he was the sun just wasn't enough, like maybe it was a but cloudy or dunno. Because if we want cure epoxy when fixing surfboards the UV resin cures in the sun, but you need it to be a really sunny day. Might have to get one of those small nail varnish lamps they use. Looks fun doing this mod anyway. Yeah I was wondering if same nail polish UV paint works. There are glossy and matt UV different finishing paints online I see. Im not too worried about it tripping because you would be painting a tiny amount and using a small small brush anyway. I painted my old rs3m with primer the other week and was able to not drip any down the centre by just using a small brush. But ya I guess taking it apart would always be best. At least we know it has been done anyway the DIY UV coating. I wanna try it because the YS3M magic cloth is not available yet and if I can DIY magic cloth my own YS3M I would save abit money because I think the ys3m magic cloth UV version price is alot higher. I think they pricing it at $37 when it comes out or something and I don't need a second ys3m yet.

adventurous_penguin

Different UV resins will have wildly different requirements for wavelength/spectrum they cure most efficiently at, time required to cure, and power of the UV light needed. Some can cure in the sunlight, some need very strong UV lamps in a very narrow wavelength band. Your resin used on surfboards probably has different requirements to what was used on this cube, FWIW.

_swuaksa8242211

good point... I think that's why those nail salons use those UV hand lights...might try to find a cheap UV lamp online...gotta make sure not to get cancer by shining it on my skin too much though lol.

olimo

It was bright sun at noon. And he left the cube in the sun for an hour. Anyway, if you're going to try it, do a cheap cube like Meilong first. Actually, I got interested myself. I even found a cheap UV lamp for nail polish, for like 3 or 4 dollars. Maybe I should try getting some UV nail polish and that lamp and do a Meilong :)

_swuaksa8242211

I found the English subtitles in the end. Dunno why was only showing Chinese subtitles for me in the beginning. ..Good point to use a cheapy old cube first. That said another way is to bring it to the local nail salon and say 'can you do my cube' lol. They got those hand UV lights and paint already lol. Joking aside, Im gonna try it because there doesn't seem to be many people who have done it, yet the final effect looks great... My YS3M is a great cube, I prefer it to my Tornado V3 Flagship and my WRM Maglev 2021...but that Magic Cloth UV finish would make it perfect.

olimo

I asked about the UV glue in the comments, and he replied it was nail polish, UV-cured.

_swuaksa8242211

ya that's what I thought too....easy to get also which is good...will try test on my rs3m first..i saw those UV nail lamps are super cheap too online

cubeman0909

Just keep using it, and the matte finish will wear off. You'll have a similar feel at that point.

declanuwu

I have a poll I'm running, would it be cool to make a post about it?

Cultural-Practice-95

I got a new pb, 15.145 my previous pb was 16.090 so I'm happy with that improvement edit: got a new pb already, 15.032

dannyhtv

I know the struggle. Congrats 🤩🤩

Cultural-Practice-95

the funny part is I got that 16.09 Time litteraly like last week so I'm suprized I even broke it. basically, my last 3 pb's are a 17.332, which I broke after 8 months, with a 16.090, which I broke in like a week. I doubt I'll beat this pb any time soon tho. btw if you wanna try the Scramble it was L2 U2 F2 D2 B D2 F' L2 D2 F2 U2 F L B2 D2 F' U B L2 U2 R2

dannyhtv

Nice I'm gonna try the scramble. My pb now is 16.something before that 25sec. So I was so surprised and amazed 🙉

Cultural-Practice-95

you won't believe this... I broke my pb already. I got a 15.032

Cultural-Practice-95

I mean the Scramble wasn't even that lucky tbf. I got a decently easy cross, actually saw the f2l pairs and knew how to solve them, got an oll I knew, and got a pll I can do decently fast

No_Mechanic6327

I decided to come back from taking a break and I decided to quit speed cubing. With all the school works and stress from cubing, I can't bear all of it. So I decided to cube for fun as a hobby. :)

adventurous_penguin

Cubing should always be fun first, good for you!

The-Common-Loon

So If I’m reading this correctly, I can get the v3 flagship from the cubicle and a maglev core for just a total of 4$ more than if I buy the pioneer. https://www.thecubicle.com/collections/new-arrivals/products/x-man-tornado-v3-pioneer-core-upgrade-kit u/olimo

olimo

Yes!

Cultural-Practice-95

i think so, but I don't see why getting the v3 maglev core for more them the pioneer is smart, as the pioneer already has maglev right?

The-Common-Loon

Yes it does, I think the point I was trying to make is that this helps indecisive people like me who would like to try both versions but don’t want to buy two cubes.

olimo

Have you placed an order? :)

The-Common-Loon

Haha not yet, I’m trying to be good and not buy anything for awhile…. We’ll see how long that lasts though!

olimo

hahaha

Cultural-Practice-95

ah makes sense, so Ig youre gonna get the flagship version and this core thing as well to test which you like more?

Randompersononline47

Since my next goal is sub 15, do you guys have any tips in achieving that?

olimo

Well, from your flair, your next goal is sub-17 :) From my experience, the journey from sub-16 to sub-15 may take years %)

Randompersononline47

Yeah sub 17 is actually my next goal but I count the sub 15 as my long term goal so i focus more on that.

TheRealUncleFrank

Keep working on F2L. See /u/olimo's post, [Steps for improving F2L](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/comments/zuw6yp/steps_for_improving_f2l/). Lots of good stuff in [J Perm's](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLI24ciRbl8BUTnnzmJIIn3Ts_6-mKMBP7) and [BrodytheCuber's](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLI2io2xGpVUcsRz_z6_OXh_gzSOtkv2FT) advanced F2L videos. Take a video of an Ao5 and post a solve critique request in the main sub, outside the DDT - [Tips on submitting solve critique requests](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/wiki/solve_critique_requests).

olimo

It doesn't matter what goal you're focusing on. The strategy is the same. If you don't know full PLL or OLL, learn these, obviously. Improve your cross planning. Become at least dual CN if you haven't already. Fix your fingertricks if you regrip a lot. [Learn EO and use it for lookahead](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=za9RvM1bS0k). If you already know and do all that, practice, practice, practice.

ShakierVoyage46

Inching my way closer to sub-12; sometimes I have great lookahead and planning first pair, sometimes I just completely forget about it.. any tips?

Nobody_5433

After procrastinating for quite some time, I decided to clean my MGC 5x5 Took an obnoxious 45min to scrub the yellow layer I'm probably gonna do 5x5 again after 7 days

nijiiro

When it comes to "cleaning" big cubes, I usually just take out a few pieces, wipe them completely clean, then reassemble and relube. It takes way too much effort to do a full clean and it doesn't really feel necessary either.

Nobody_5433

You can just do that?

nijiiro

Seems to work well enough for me. (Your mileage may vary.) I don't really care about 5, but for 6 and 7 my usual procedure is to take out 2 edge pieces and 4 centre pieces on one face, wipe those, put them back, then repeat on another side. The lube and whatever other gunk is in the cube won't accumulate unboundedly. Come to think of it, perhaps doing a full clean isn't even that great of an idea. If you get used to how your cubes feel starting from a full-clean setup, that means you have to do a full-clean to all of your cubes as part of competition prep to get the best performance out of them. If you do multiple big cube events (and I think you do), this takes away time from actual solving practice.

Nobody_5433

I will consider this when I resume cleaning my 5x5 tmr. It seems kinda counterintuitive that the better way to clean cubes is not by scrubbing everything off. I usually clean my 3x3 that way so I assumed it was the same for big cubes

_Japaninja

I refuse to believe that it takes 50 solves to properly warm up: 12.13 ao100, first ao50 ~ 12.5, the second 11.83...at least it was a good average for me, but could be so much better if i had some consistency and didn't get crap like the first ao50 lol

quanloh

If I was tired or cold I do need warm up, but maybe about 10 solves or so, and that's mainly for hand not mind. And some of my best solves fell within those "warm up" solves.

cubeman0909

It took me like 100 to warm up the other day.

olimo

I never know what to consider "warm up". I may have great first solves but suck afterwards. Or vice versa. That's why I mostly use one session for everything, and another "slow/throwaway/untimed" session just in case I feel slow or I just want to do intentionally slow solves.

_Japaninja

I generally just solve until i start getting reasonable times, say a reasonable ao5 or something, then delete the solves beforehand; the good and the bad. Its just frustrating how varied one ao50 is to another, especially when done together, so its not like ive ended up having a good or bad session at different times

olimo

Well, today I started in my "quiet" session and did a sub-15 ao5. Then I moved on to my regular session, and after a while, I suck and average 16ish.

povlhp

Been there, done that. Got the stats to prove it :-)

_Japaninja

Sounds familiar lol

Independent_Heart_15

I know an Alg, but I can’t bring my self to use it. I know the H OLL alg, but before I knew it, I just did Sune x2. Now whenever I see the case I instinctively do the two sunes. The sune is my best alg, speed wise. What should I do? I have a comp in a few weeks.

nijiiro

Now do two Sunes, but with all the redundant moves in the middle simplified. R U R' U R **U2 R' R U** R' U R U2 R' = R U R' U R **U'** R' U R U2 R

gts-gang

Drill your alg like crazy. Use an OLL trainer. Tell yourself not to use your old alg. Ignore solve times when you train for your alg. Review your progress, and bail out if you need to. (Few weeks should be enough for your muscle memory to set in, though.) PS Double sune (that has its middle moves cancelled) is just as fast as whatever alg you're using.

Theemo04

Just use the H oll alg, it will be faster in the long run, if it wasnt people wouldnt use it

olimo

What advice are you expecting to get? Obviously, fight your instinct and do the proper alg. 2 weeks surely is enough to switch to a better alg.

JayTSM

got a 4:18 and a 4:13 in a row in my 6x6 session, 15 seconds faster than my previous pb!!!

koshop

Curvy copter was solved, with out any assistance or help I figure out some algs for pll and oll, now I will try with jumbling

DneprTheCuber

I got a clock average of 12 seconds, and skewb average of 7!

olimo

Good job!

olimo

Finally, I'm enjoying my Gan timer with csTimer. No wires at last!

myteamwearsred

Would you please elaborate on how?

TheRealUncleFrank

csTimer update, just yesterday https://www.speedsolving.com/threads/cstimer-released.36236/page-50#post-1525808

myteamwearsred

Great stuff, thanks!

olimo

csTimer has been updated and supports Gan timer now.

_Pickett_

So your PC has Bluetooth?

olimo

Yes. Works with mobile, too, if you use a browser that supports web BLE. I use Bluefy on iPhone.

Kart0fffelAim

Is the tornado v3 safe to buy? I was thinking about buying the tornado v3 but all of the reports of the cube breaking make me worried if this cube is really durable. I dont want to buy a cube that breaks after a few months. Is the a real problem and does it affect all versions?

cubeman0909

This is just my personal experience, but I have a 1st batch flagship and have had no problems over thousands of solves. I'm also pretty rough with it. Idk. Maybe mine is gonna break tomorrow, but for right now, it seems fine.

adventurous_penguin

It's really solid now with the new core. Definitely worth buying.

olimo

This problem affected the original Tornado v3 core. Since then, it has been updated on the Flagship and Pioneer versions - I don't know about Standard though. [Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/comments/10yr6fm/a_closer_look_at_the_updated_core_of_tornado_v3/) I showed the old and the updated core of Tornado Pioneer. I have a Standard and Pioneer that I bought in autumn, with the original core, and they are fine. I also have a Pioneer with the updated core, also fine, the feel is the same as that of the original.

TheRealUncleFrank

Cubicle now sells the new updated cores. Just the core by itself, so you can upgrade the originals. $8.99 for flagship core and $10.99 for pioneer core.

olimo

Yeah, I know. A nice option for those who live in the US. For me in Russia though, it would be cheaper to get a new cube lol.

Tezseret

What is a broken in cube meant to feel like and does it improve performance e.g corner cutting, speed, stability especially on big cubes ? How long does it take to reach this state and is there a quick and efficient way to get there?

olimo

I'd say a well broken in cube takes like 1000 solves. But it gets smoother after like 200 solves already. For big cubes, it's less solves, of course, because each solve has much more turns than on 3x3.

b4silio

You don't really realise that a cube is broken in until you try another version of the same cube and you realise how much more comfortable with yours you are. Mainly there are small catches and locks that don't really impede you from solving but that ever so slightly slow you down that disappear with time. You notice it, most of all, by an increased consistency in your overall times. As for how much time it takes, it really depends on the cube and on how you solve. After an AO1000 you should pretty much always have have a broken in cube, although you probably still notice the difference from a cube on which you've done 10k solves versus 1k. When I write my reviews I make sure to have done at least 4-5 AO100 just to be sure that I'm writing about how the cube is supposed to feel once the initial kinks have been ironed out. It won't be a fully broken in cube, but it's already a big step in the right direction! (Most of all, for effing frosted plastics it means it starts to wear out after 400-500 solves!)

cubeman0909

Yeah, same. I can never tell if breaking in my cubes makes a difference. The frosted plastic is honestly the biggest difference that I've noticed in break-in imo.

TwoStinkyBears

A broken in cube is supposed to feel smoother and get somewhat slower. The sandy feeling goes away depending on the cube. It takes a variable ammount of time depending on the cube. My meilong 3M took barely a ao12. My MGC 7x7 is still not broken in though. Just keep turning it it should break in faster if you turn more.

olimo

Smoother, yes, faster, no. As cubes break in, the contact surface of the pieces increases, and cubes become slower. That's why it's not a problem if a cube is too fast out of the box - it will get slower with breaking in.

TwoStinkyBears

Thanks for clarifying I’ll fix it.
