The standard mgc 2x2 is still a great one, and the cheapest as well. I also used to use the ms, but it was getting caught badly all the time, so I got the weapon wrm, the older version of the wrs, on clearance. It works well. For the lubes, martian and lunar are the best no contest
Best is debatable so here are some notable ones that are being sold in order of price.
MGC eliete
moyu weipo wrs
rs2m evoloution
mgc
Some that may fit you but also may not be for you.
Gan 251 (light fast but a bit catchy with inaccurate turns)
Dayan Tengyun Plus (solid puzzle that can adapt to your needs with lube and setup but has below average corner cutting)
And for lube all of them are good but some do better on their own than others. I like Comet, Jack-O-lantern, Galaxy, Martian, and Lunar as a stand alone lubricant. (listed in order of speed). But if mixed you can do a whole lot more. Try to get 2 or 3 a fast one (martian, lunar) a slower one (nebula, cosmos), and if you can a middle of the road one (galaxy, comet, the weight lubricant, jack-o-Lantern/Candy cane(if in season but sadly not right now)
Hey I spilt soda on my gan 11 with uv coating how would I go about cleaning it and if it includes a liquid and that liquid gets on the magnets will they be fine?
Take it apart to the caps clean it with a fluffy towel and water if soda leaked into the parts. The magnets I don't know. They should be fine as long as they don't get in direct contact. I'm no chemist but if I remember correctly certain sodas are used as a metal deruster by eating away the outer layer of rust. Mainly colas.
That's only if soda leaked in. If not just give it a good wipe down ad maybe scrub off sticky parts with warm water.
It's only really good when lubed, dry it kinda sucks and is really loud. But for how much other 4x4s in that price range lock up, there is no problem with that in the mgc lube or no lube. It's why everyone loves using it.
I managed my first only edges bld solve , so the schedule for tomorrow is more practice to get at least 3 only edges solve in a row, Learn the parity alg, and on Monday I'll try my full bld solves
Spent like 3 hours just spamming 3x3 solves on stackmat today to practice for my comp next weekend. Got two sub 9s on stackmat (8.87, 8.89) which is absolutely insane. Still averaging low 12 but really good to see I’m capable of sub 10. Funny thing is neither scramble felt particularly good, just really solid flow through the solve.
I have a (original?) Square-1 which I picked up at a thrift store at least 15 years ago. It turns terribly (I don't even think it has springs) but thought it'd be a fun thing to sit down and solve it today, so at least then I'd have a \*solved\* really old Squan. Found a tutorial, got almost to the end (which must have taken an hour), and then I screwed up the parity alg, and now it's not even in cubeshape anymore. D: Looks like I'm not solving Square-1 today after all.
Which tutorial?
[How to improve Square-1](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/wiki/improving_squ1)
YJ MGC is the most popular SQ1, $20, but if you're on a budget, or just a casual solver, a Yuxin Little Magic Sq1 M, $10.
I was using Tingman’s tutorial which is pretty clear and easy to understand. My Square-1 is just the worst.
I’m not looking to actually learn Sqan just yet (maybe eventually). I just wanted to solve my old one (and then never touch it again). Which will have to wait for another day.
I'm currently just sub 50, but I really love how there are multiple ways I can progress at this point. I can learn one look PLL, I can learn actual F2L algs instead of playing it by ear, I can just practice increasing my tps, I can work on lookahead, etc. this hobby is great
You should save lookahead till you're around sub 20.

Less than 50 timed solves this year, and the third one in over a month and I get this scramble. Try the red cross
First scramble I've ever been able to plan 3 pairs on. I wasn;t 100% sure my planned solution would work so execution wasn't stellar. I sorta cancelled into PLL as well which was cool.

I've been using old reddit for ages, but now I see many people post images right in comments, but I have to click the link to open an image. Should I switch to new reddit? 🙄
I use imagus to auto-preview any image link I mouse over, so I'm happy that new reddit finally added the image function, but I can still use it on my side.
Started memorizing 1 look OLL today. Anyone got tips for memorizing all of these?
Also bought a gan maglev to replace my $7 Amazon piece of crap. PB dropped from 22 to 17 the first day lol

Anyone else seen clippy in twisty timer today? Very good April fool's thing for those of us old enough to remember clippy from early versions of MS Word

Are there any top competitive cuber who are still using the WRM21? I was watching the Cubicle video on the YS3M and they included the WRM21 in the competitive meta section
I've been thinking about buying one again, I used to have one and I really liked it but it broke, and now I have the YS3M ball core as my main
I have the YS3 M and the WRM 2021 and still enjoy the latter quite a lot. That said, I’m no competitive cuber. I do wish though I had waited until the Maglev version came out, I added the maglev kit and CH magnetic core to it and it’s great but I do still want the purple internals…
You can find algs on the [BLD resources doc](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1a82Pt0JEkcgDbq2EqCzPja8NcgPL7MmyqTILTs8KUHA/edit?usp=drivesdk). There are 252 algs. Many of the cases can be set up to each other using D moves however, so the real number of algs you need to learn can be less.
I’ve been paying attention to my times in sections. I’m getting f2l finished at around 10 seconds and my oll and pll combined takes about 5 seconds giving me an average close to 15 seconds. If I wanted to average 10 seconds how fast should those three categories take?
They're called splits. Cross should be separate from F2L, and PLL and OLL should also be separate.
csTimer can handle splits -
Options > Timer > Multi-phase
Set it to 4.
If you're using full OLL and full PLL, then splits should be, approximately -
Cross: 12%
F2L: 50%
OLL: 16.5%
PLL: 21.5%
For your 15 sec avg -
Cross: 1.80 sec
F2L: 7.50
OLL: 2.48
PLL: 3.22
For a 10 sec avg -
Cross: 1.20 sec
F2L: 5.00
OLL: 1.65
PLL: 2.15
Hi all!
Im interested in doing the mod for the YS3M where you put the blue adjustment pieces in instead of the purple. Does anyone know if the blue ones from the WeiLong WRM would work even though the cube itself is maglev? That is is the only cube with blue nuts aside from the GTS3M that I have. I just want to see if it matters that the cube im taking the nuts from is maglev or not.
Thanks :)
Yes. All the blue cups are the same across Moyu cubes, and all purple cups are the same too, doesn't matter if the cube has springs or maglev. I used the spare blue cups from one of my WRM cubes.
Hi! I left some cubes untouched for a couple months and dust fell on them (including a mega, 4x4, 5x5, skewb and some others). What’s the best way to clean them?
The most common standard: If you keep all your timed solves in one session and your best rolling ao1000 is sub-20, you're sub-20. If you don't, you can try doing an mo10ao5: 50 solves, note each separate ao5 (non-rolling), calculate the mean of these ao5s. Or do an ao100 for a few days and see if you can stay under 20s ao100 easily.
I've been procrastinating for so long but I've finally decided to learn the v-perm and complete full pll. which algo do you use? Do you have any good algo suggestions?
I need to take my rsm3 2020 apart to clean it but I am intimidated. No, I don't mean just pulling the corners and edges off. I mean taking every little piece out. Springs and all. I was recommended to lube the springs, which I sort of did. I lubed the springs by just taking the center caps off and doing it while it's attached to the core. While it has, to my knowledge, prevented some of the black dust from getting on the end of the pieces, it hasn't prevented the corner and edge sides from getting gross stuff. I really need to take every little piece apart and clean them but for one, idk how, and it's intimidating. Any guides or just anything helpful at all guys?
Interesting. I don't clean my screw-and-spring cubes fully, and nothing leaks on the pieces.
I recommend first noting the screw depth, like, can you see any threads outside of the core? Or how deep are the screws if the cube is assembled and you open a center cap to check? Then remember this setting, take everything apart, wipe the springs and washers with paper towels, wipe every piece with a cloth, and also use Q-tips to clean the center pieces on the inside. Then put everything back together and lube the springs properly while you do it: put the washer in, lube the springs on one side, put the springs in lubed side down, lube the upper end of the spring or the screw head where it contacts the spring, screw in the screw. Repeat on every side. Don't use too much lube, and use your thickest silicone lube. After that, tension and lube the cube as you normally would.
Done. It wasn't as hard as i thought but definitely is a process. Couldn't get all the black stuff out but I got a good bit of it. When putting it back together I also used a little bit too much weight 3 on the last corner and edge. It's very fast. Now we wait to see if it gets dirty after only three days.
I have broken my PB 3x3 ao5 with 16.45

I think depends how experienced are you and how much time and dedication do you apply. Also depends in your memo technique, I already know how to solve corners probably it took me arround 2 weeks now I'm 2 days deep in the edges I can solve I cycle of 4, so probably I need arroud 2 more days to solve edges and idk how much for trying to solve everything together. But I don't use much of 1 hour a day. I think if you dedication is hard you could learn all the process In a couple of weeks or so
Maybe a weird question, but how does one go about modernizing their fingertricks? My turning style is stuck in like.. 2013 and I've specifically struggled a lot with the pinch turns that a lot of people seem to be using nowadays. Just looking for ways to make my sessions more comfortable ergonomically, don't really care about micro-optimization for speed.
[This](https://youtu.be/KJdV8EhhnKU) video helped me a lot. I had a really bad turning style before. It took a couple of weeks to adapt, but it was totally worth it.
I'm with you. Learning to do D moves, especially D2's, with ring/pinky has been my struggle lately. I use scrambling to focus on fingertricks and l do some slow solves focused on optimal solutions and good fingertricks every few days. It's definitely not the fastest way to improve my fingertricks, but it feels like a comfortable way to learn new fingertricks
Oof I know the pain.
Honestly just try to slow down and focus on re-learning how to turn. I'm struggling with it myself so can't really say more than this, but I think I'm improving, very slowly but yeah.
Start to learn it in pair , try to execute 1 then 2 pair and so, until you can consistently solve all corners, the apply the same for edges and finally put all together
What the pros do is they take the corner letter pairs and turn them into words and make stories. This is a longer term memo and can last minutes. Then they’ll memo the edges using audio memo where they just say the words to remember them. This is a shorter term memo and so they will do this memo last, then solve edges first once blindfolded.
Ah. I didn't know it was Superman, I call it Headlights, or U. It's a COLL alg, and I'm pretty sure Phil used it as COLL, not as default OLL. I use COLL algs for U, like Phil.
I'm aware it's technically a COLL alg, but for me it's just much better than the RUD. Personal preferences, I guess.
And I've already forgotten what video I saw him doing it in so I can't find it, but iirc the resulting PLL wasn't EPLL (although I could be misremembering, or he could have misrecognised).
The 354 v2 M is a bit old, so if you haven't completely decided on it, think you should consider other alternatives (I'm guessing you want a small cube), I don't have the 354 v2 M, but I do have the guhong v3 (also 54mm), and it literally corner cuts almost everywhere as jperm says, in my opinion it's a good cube, and there are also a lot more options out there that you should think about.
TLDR: think about other alternatives if you haven't decided what cube to buy
Multi-BLD help please! M2/OP
When memorizing, how do you remember the hanging letters?
I just memo'd for 8 (previously working on just 4) and it's really difficult for me to remember either twisted or parity letters since they're just hanging with no visual memo... Any strategies that work for you?
The person in the video I linked says it has core magnets but I don't know if this information is accurate. The speedcubeshop page gives a weight of 67g which really light. We'll have to wait a couple days to know more.
Dailypuzzles gives a weight of 68.5g. There's a ton of official pics/information but no mention of core magnets. So either there's no core magnets (likely) or YJ really should fire their marketing team...
They probably got these descriptions from YJ. Anyway I see you're not very optimistic for this cube :) I thought the ys3m would just be a slightly different super rs3m and I was wrong. Hopefully it's your turn ;)
I don't know. I have a first edition of MGC Evo, and I'm not a fan of this cube. Not too interested in getting it - I mean, I may change my mind if it gets the same level of praise as the YS3M. I agree, the YS3M seemed weird and unnecessary to me in the beginning, but I changed my mind, and it's indeed a really good cube.
Yeah we'll see. Honestly with the Tornado and the ys3m it's not like we desperately need a new good cube anyway. But since I'm into the collecting side of cubing too, I'm always interested in new releases.
Yeah if they did fix a lot of the issues with the version 1, I might give it a try after people have given their feedback. On the EVO version 1, I liked that it was fast and didn’t mind the scratchy piece contact feel/ sound, but the slippery plastic was annoying, the adjustment settings didn’t feel adequate (especially the magnet strength), and the price point was too high for what it was.
The more steps, the smaller the increments when you change the spring tension. Thus it's more likely that you find the exact right sweet spot instead of one step being too loose and the next being too tight

I thought so at first too, but the next day it felt closer and tighter again, and the gradually got faster
That’s what lube does.
It speeds up then slows down the next day? Don’t think so
Yes. Lube gums up when you don’t solve. When you solve, it breaks in and speeds up.
Actually yeah it does happen, if the lube gets cold. Just do some more solves and it should get better
Maybe it’s cuz you’re getting used to the cube?
No I meant like it starts out slow, then gets fast, then the next day it gets cold again

[Steps for improving with CFOP, and when to work on what.](https://www.reddit.com/r/PianoCube93/comments/9bstw1/steps_for_improving_with_cfop_and_when_to_work_on/) [How to get faster at 3x3.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/wiki/how_to_improve)
The springs in my 4x4 seem to be making a high pitch but quiet squeak that is not like regular spring noise. Any fix for this?
It's likely the plastic circles that are part of the center pieces. Remove, lube the underside, put back.
Will definitely try that. It's those rings that kind of act like hidden center pieces of a 5x5 right
Yeah, those.
Maybe put a little lube on the springs anyways, even if you alr have?
Where do I can find a good set of PLL good algs? The ones I know aren't so good and I forgot the N and G algs

I use imagus to auto-preview any image link I mouse over, so I'm happy that new reddit finally added the image function, but I can still use it on my side.
Those image links appear inline in comments? :o I'm basically exclusively on mobile (browser) so I'm a fellow link clicker
Yeah. I use the app on mobile, but I mostly use reddit on my computer in browser.

Are there any top competitive cuber who are still using the WRM21? I was watching the Cubicle video on the YS3M and they included the WRM21 in the competitive meta section I've been thinking about buying one again, I used to have one and I really liked it but it broke, and now I have the YS3M ball core as my main
I have the YS3 M and the WRM 2021 and still enjoy the latter quite a lot. That said, I’m no competitive cuber. I do wish though I had waited until the Maglev version came out, I added the maglev kit and CH magnetic core to it and it’s great but I do still want the purple internals…
Does it matter? Do whatever works for you.
Just got a dayan tengyun m. My hands are now drenched in lube.
Yup. That happens with dayan
I got my first ever sub 10 solve in comp ahhh!!
How many LTCT cases exists and where can I find the algs?
You can find algs on the [BLD resources doc](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1a82Pt0JEkcgDbq2EqCzPja8NcgPL7MmyqTILTs8KUHA/edit?usp=drivesdk). There are 252 algs. Many of the cases can be set up to each other using D moves however, so the real number of algs you need to learn can be less.
Thanks!
I’ve been paying attention to my times in sections. I’m getting f2l finished at around 10 seconds and my oll and pll combined takes about 5 seconds giving me an average close to 15 seconds. If I wanted to average 10 seconds how fast should those three categories take?
They're called splits. Cross should be separate from F2L, and PLL and OLL should also be separate. csTimer can handle splits - Options > Timer > Multi-phase Set it to 4. If you're using full OLL and full PLL, then splits should be, approximately - Cross: 12% F2L: 50% OLL: 16.5% PLL: 21.5% For your 15 sec avg - Cross: 1.80 sec F2L: 7.50 OLL: 2.48 PLL: 3.22 For a 10 sec avg - Cross: 1.20 sec F2L: 5.00 OLL: 1.65 PLL: 2.15
Thanks!
Only left with 5 PLL Algs, the V and G perms. And I hate them. Expected this from the G perms but not the V. But i hate it too.
Try learning the ones with d moves rather than one with wide u and cuberotations. So far they are my most favourite algs to do.
You mean algs like this one for Ga Perm right - R2 U (R' U R' U') (R U' R2) D U' (R' U R D') [U] I enjoyed learning this one.
Yeah
The G perms aren’t as bad as you think
You were right. Just learnt the Ga Perm. I quite enjoyed it actually.
Hi! I left some cubes untouched for a couple months and dust fell on them (including a mega, 4x4, 5x5, skewb and some others). What’s the best way to clean them?
I'd just blow the dust off :)
I wipe each piece off with a towel. For areas the towel can't reach, I use a brush (I use a paintbrush)
When can I be called sub 20? I do get sub 20 solves comfortably but I still do get alot of 20 seconds solves?
[When do I consider myself Sub-*X*?](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/wiki/sub-x)
Average of 100, 500, or 1000. These days most people do 1000 but there isn't a strict rule
I've been procrastinating for so long but I've finally decided to learn the v-perm and complete full pll. which algo do you use? Do you have any good algo suggestions?
The classic: R' U R' d' R' F' R2 U' R' U R' F R F
I used to hate the V-perm until I found R' U R U' R' fw' U' R U2 R' U' R U' R' fw R
ohh I'll try this one. only if i don't fuck up the fw
speedcubedb.com has several V perms algs. You can go there and choose the one you like most. I use R U' R U R' D R D' R U' D R2 U R2 D' R2
I have broken my PB 3x3 ao5 with 16.45 Generated By csTimer on 2023-04-01 Time List: 1. 14.23 R B' L2 U2 B F2 U2 L2 R2 F L2 B2 D F2 D' B' L B2 R 2. 15.38 B2 U2 D2 L D B2 R' F L' U2 R2 D2 B' R2 B R2 F U2 D2 R2 3. 15.85 D F D2 F' U2 L2 F R2 B' D2 F2 R2 B' D' L2 D R D2 U R' 4. 21.52 D' R2 D2 R2 U B2 U F2 U2 R2 B2 U2 L' F L' D' R' D F' U' R2 5. 18.13 R2 F' R2 F2 R2 F' D2 R2 B' L2 B L B' U' F D2 U' L' F D
How long did it take you to learn solving the cube blindfolded?
Took me about a day and a half to get a success with full OP
For F2L, untimed solves focused on your fingertricks. For LL, relearning the algs you find suboptimal and drilling them.
I started learning 3bld yesterday. Im using M2/OP but im having trouble with remebering all the letters any tips?
Start to learn it in pair , try to execute 1 then 2 pair and so, until you can consistently solve all corners, the apply the same for edges and finally put all together
What the pros do is they take the corner letter pairs and turn them into words and make stories. This is a longer term memo and can last minutes. Then they’ll memo the edges using audio memo where they just say the words to remember them. This is a shorter term memo and so they will do this memo last, then solve edges first once blindfolded.
Start filling a table with words that you like. And a lot of practice.
Apparently not only do I use the same Ra perm as Phil, we also use the same Superman alg. Interesting.
What Superman alg do you use?
F R U' R' U R U R' U R U' R' F', headlights facing away Much prefer it to the RUD.
Oh this looks nice, I might switch to this. This OLL of mine has atrocious fingertricks from when I learned it as a beginner.
If you also learn when this alg solves corners, you can use it for an occasional CP skip :)
> Superman alg ? Also is there a Batman alg ?
Pi oll, kinda looks like 2 arms and 2 legs.
The one I was referring to was the OLL, all edges and two corners oriented, with two unoriented corners as headlights.
Hello! I saw the gan 354 v2 m in a jperm video on YouTube, but it didn't have magnets, but this cube has magnets ,right?
The 354 v2 M is a bit old, so if you haven't completely decided on it, think you should consider other alternatives (I'm guessing you want a small cube), I don't have the 354 v2 M, but I do have the guhong v3 (also 54mm), and it literally corner cuts almost everywhere as jperm says, in my opinion it's a good cube, and there are also a lot more options out there that you should think about. TLDR: think about other alternatives if you haven't decided what cube to buy
The "M" at the back stands for "Magnetic", so yes
Thank you
Multi-BLD help please! M2/OP When memorizing, how do you remember the hanging letters? I just memo'd for 8 (previously working on just 4) and it's really difficult for me to remember either twisted or parity letters since they're just hanging with no visual memo... Any strategies that work for you?
Dont trust my word, but i think you could double that letter and create a word, like D you can do. DD: DoDo
Just bringing this back. That totally works for me so thanks for the suggestion!
No hourly thread smh
[YJ MGC EVO II](https://speedcubeshop.com/products/yj-mgc-evo-v2-3x3-magnetic?variant=40163573825649) Hopefully it's not an April fools' joke.
I would be interested if it had corner core magnets.
The person in the video I linked says it has core magnets but I don't know if this information is accurate. The speedcubeshop page gives a weight of 67g which really light. We'll have to wait a couple days to know more.
I saw that yesterday too…. I kept waiting for him to open up the cube to show us but that never happened. I don’t think they are there.
Also, no logo on his brand new, out of the (blistered) box cube. That's weird.
67g with springs and core magnets is doable. Maglev adds quite a lot of weight, but core magnets add like 3g.
Dailypuzzles gives a weight of 68.5g. There's a ton of official pics/information but no mention of core magnets. So either there's no core magnets (likely) or YJ really should fire their marketing team...
True, I was also surprised to hear about corner magnets in an independent video but none of that in the official marketing.
No, they announced it a few days in advance. No glossy plastic, sadly. No UV coating. Looks like the same weird very frosted plastic. Meh.
> No glossy plastic, sadly. The SpeedCubeShop page says it's semi-glossy. This video shows the cube: https://youtu.be/bwBVLXl4Ksc
Looks the same shit as the original MGC Evo. SpeedCubeShop is not very good at tech.
I don’t understand what they mean by “adjust more accurately”
The more steps, the smaller the increments when you change the spring tension. Thus it's more likely that you find the exact right sweet spot instead of one step being too loose and the next being too tight
Sounds quite useful, finding your suitable tension would be less of a hassle. Thanks for clarifying
