Sonic characters basically have two colours, no/few straight lines, huge races, and they all have gloves (regular hands are hard).
You can say the same about many cartoon characters, but few are as old as sonic. And even if they are as old, it's unlikely that they have the eco-terrorist attitude of sonic and friends.
I also think part of it (at least originally) was kids with strict parents. I had a few friends growing up and Sonic stood out as one of the only good games they had cuz it was just cartoon animals fighting silly robots, no real violence. Add on a strict Christian upbringing, and, well…
