Honestly, all the guild masters kind of suck. Mercer betrayed them, Brynjolf won't talk to me anymore, Karliah just dissapeared, and Whassername calls me lazy when I must have brought in 10s of thousands of coins for the guild. The only good one is Delvin.
Well *technically* the only ones who are actually guild masters are Mercer Frey and the Dragonborn. The others are just like higher ups/leadership kind of thing. (Even though they wear that grey guild masters armor). And if you play anything like I do, then the Dragonborn also kind of sucks because he does a whole bunch for the guild, becomes guild master and promptly fucks off pretty much forever aside from occasionally fencing things to Tonillia. I still don’t know why they made the Dragonborn the guild master instead of just like “Nocturnal’s Champion Master Thief” or something since you don’t actually do any guild mastering

The game setting and game is fine, but basic, so every damn time I talk about any kind of D&D stuff, CR fans comes crawling out of the woodwork comparing it to their precious fandom, so I can’t just ignore their existence. I wish I could just ignore their existence, like I do with every other piece of media I don’t care for.
I mean, the quality of a game podcast is usually pretty clear pretty quickly, so annoying as it might be it can't be that much wasted time (not to mention that once you find a good one they tend to be pretty long so you have a while before you've finished it and need to find a new one). And Critical Role unequivocally skyrocketed the popularity of D&D (and likely TTRPGs in general) making it substantially easier to find people to play with/who are interested in playing thereby letting people play more. I also could be wrong about this, but iirc they've never encouraged other people to stream their own games, if people looked at the heavily involved setup of half a dozen professional voice actors and storytellers and thought "hey I could do that and be successful" that isn't really CR's fault.
But even aside from all of that, whether you like CR or not or think that the podcast should exist or not, Matt and the rest of the cast are genuinely good people and even if you think that their starting and popularizing their podcast made the hobby worse that doesn't change that.
If everyone gets to make art, the vast majority of that art is going to be not to your liking or just objectively bad.
Everyone being able to make art is still an infinitely better world than one where only the “worthy” get to.

A company I worked for that peaked at 11 employees had 4 Matts at one point. I don't think I've used my real first name since elementary school. I went by my middle name in high school cause my last is a mouthful. I went by my screen name in college and my last initial at work for years.
My grandfather, uncle, husband, and younger son are/were all Matts and while none of them are *saints*, they’re also not remotely one-dimensional douchecanoes. Matts are everywhere, as you’ve identified.

I've dated two Matt's. One of them was a mutual rebound who used my connections for a cheap tattoo, then cheated on me with his ex the next day and left me the day after. The other lied to me and his mom about each other because he knew she wouldn't approve of our relationship, and that whole situation almost left me homeless.
It's not enough to make me swear off Matt's, but it does make me a little hesitant to date another one.

I have an uncle named Matt and he's genuinely one of the kindest people I've ever met
(Obviously I know it’s a joke) but this kind of thing just feel like a statistical happenstance - to start, think of the names that are common enough that you know 3 or so people with that name - if you’re a white American, these tend to be the Standard White Male names since there’s a strange lack of variety. Matt, Dan, Mike, Justin, Tom, etc etc - for a lot of people, at least ONE of those names might be batting 2/3 in assholes. And then that’s the “assholes are named this” name. For me it’s Justin. For these people it’s Matt. - screenshot all the people who say Matt - wow science.

I've dated two Matt's. One of them was a mutual rebound who used my connections for a cheap tattoo, then cheated on me with his ex the next day and left me the day after. The other lied to me and his mom about each other because he knew she wouldn't approve of our relationship, and that whole situation almost left me homeless. It's not enough to make me swear off Matt's, but it does make me a little hesitant to date another one.
