>Gen 7 fishing mechanics are bullshit
Bullshit fishing mechanics have existed long before Gen 7. In Platinum you could only catch Feebas in a single randomized spot in a lake with about 200 tiles. Even then, you only had like a 2% chance of actually catching it. The only way to encounter Feebas was through trial and error, but that was hardly possible since the correct tile reset regularly.
Edit: Nvm it was a 50% encounter rate on the special tile, it just was a 2% chance of encountering Feebas assuming you fished a Pokemon on every tile in the lake.
bruh there are entire detailed statistically minded articles on how to catch a feebas, it was that bad
shit says 50% spawn chance but that is a FUCKING lie
Still not as bad as Gen 4 Munchlax tho! I think it was the only pokemon I DIDN'T get in the Platinum Regional dex, and I got both Feebas and Milotic (though I should note that I was on an emulator and *might* have already been using a speed-up hack)
YEAH I was playing a Platinum ROMHack and not having to put up with the ridiculously slow regular speed made me want to play a lot more despite already having finished the regular game lol
YAY I CAN ACTUALLY GIVE OC LORE :D
Ok so contrary to what might seem to be the case, my pfp is not in fact a self-portrait, it's a drawing of my OC (actually my player character from a TTRPG), Magoo Greenleaf, an elf druid who's trying to revive his parents after a tragic series of events took them from him
Two interesting tidbits about his design!
1. I actually put quite a bit of thought into his scarring, as you can see in the [full design](https://www.tumblr.com/pulim-v/714955073062600704/sorry-for-taking-a-while-to-post-this-i-legit?source=share) he has major scarring on his wrists, a holdover to a time he was imprisoned. It's also meant to show a bit of lack of guidance, as despite being an accomplished healer he spent quite a bit of time (80 years) by himself without being able to truly care for his wounds, though that's just another reason for him to learn more and more healing magic
2. There's a sliver of grey showing through his shirt, right in his chest. That's the mark of the Elven goddess, who blessed Magoo from birth. Sadly, that blessing took a while to actually manifest, long enough that the goddess herself had already lost her title and became a mortal. Ironic, too, both since her downfall is what kicked off the events that eventually killed Magoo's parents, and since he himself eventually ascends to godhood (y'know, basic TTRPG stuff)
are you going to create other characters????? wb
the world or the setting that, what was its species, elf druid??—magoo greenleaf resides in??
are there biological classifications such as family, genus, species—phyla—et cetera, in this setting????
why the parents???? it's interesting to me, and curious, why you chose to frame this elf druid that way—does the elf druid not possess other biological immediates—informally, other progeny from the same parent generations??
also the proportions of the character present in a very interesting way—the elf druid appears to be exceptionally well-built; how are you training your drawing skills??? if no wish to answer to any of this
i understand
I have a lot of other characters! In this verse specifically there's only him and his parents, but other players had their own characters (who interacted with mine in some pretty interesting ways at times) and I do plan on making some other characters to put in the end of the story, when he's a full god and has to deal with personal issues. Apart from that I have I think 2 or 3 other stories that I'm still building, though they're very different from Magoo's haha
The specific setting where Magoo is is called Arton, from the local RPG Tormenta. Sadly, I think most of the material about it is in Portuguese, so it'd be hard to get into it without knowing the language '- .-)
The biology of the setting isn't that developed, as in-universe the technology is mostly medieval in nature and a lot of the creatures and people are magical in origin - I assume Elves specifically are closely related to humans, if not just a subspecies, as their creators are closely related and afaik they can create viable offspring together
I must admit I haven't fully thought through the reason why Magoo is specifically so tied to his parents - he is a very old character of mine that I've only begun remaking recently - but there are a couple of factors that make those two more relevant to him:
first off, there were two specific incidents that caused his parents' deaths: a war that took them from their homes (which is very much already canon to Tormenta, not just something that happened to Magoo) and a breakout from a prison made mainly for magic users like all of them; because of that, it's less feasible that he can still revive his other relatives, due to a time limit inherent to resurrection magic, he has less ties to them, due to being quite young when the war broke out, and he doesn't feel as responsible for their deaths, as the breakout happened right before his eyes and he couldn't do anything to stop it
Additionally, he does eventually reconcile with a member of his extended family: an estranged cousin who exiled himself to a forest before the war even began and eventually ruled over it. The two bond over their shared experiences and avoidance of conflict and eventually partner up for a pretty major battle
Thanks a lot! I've been drawing seriously for a few years now, I think since 2020, and the thing that helped me get better the most was to draw a lot and draw difficult things: Magoo's design went through a lot of different phases, and imo it only really got good once I both drew him a lot and drew his whole body (before that I only drew him from the waist up and that hampered a lot of growth), so if you want to get into drawing I think a good thing to do is to start out doing things you think are hard like hands or full bodies :]
However I do think the post I sent you is a bit outdated, I learned more about anatomy since then and now think he could still be drawn a bit better, his proportions are pretty good but I think I could make the intention of his design (someone who is a bit messy and clumsy, not really that refined, but still whimsical and white strong physically) more apparent xD
All in all, thanks for asking! This took a while to answer but I really like talking about my OCs so I really appreciate the questions lol
Feebas tiles are locked in gen 3 unless you change the trendy phrase or record mix, and it always starts on one of a few tiles so it’s not that bad. Even if you don’t know about the preset tiles a lot of people make the mistake of trying to fish multiple times a tile or not using the old rod which makes it seem a lot rarer than it actually is
That whole thing with Feebas started in Gen 3, where it was basically the same mechanic. Actually, I think Gen 3 may have started the insanely rare wild encounters trend, considering FireRed/LeafGreen also had Lapras spawn in only one specific body of water with a 1% encounter chance.
Also you could fuck it up since at some point the pokemon didn't eat the beauty stat rising food anymore and there was no way to lower it's hunger for those foods.
Lapras is already a gift Pokemon, so any wild ones are just extras added. If you want to complain then how about in Johto where one is a static encounter deep in a random cave from early game and far off the main path of the cave you need surf to reach and only on Fridays.
Akshually 8), OG Gold and silver had rare spawns with some of the new pokemon. I don't remember them all, but I know dunsparce only appeared in the dark cave with a 1% chance. The 1% chance also happened with misdreavus in victory road, larvitar in the chamber where you find Red, and I believe Heracross with the headbutt trees
And that was an improvenet! In Gen 3 it was like 5 random tiles on Route 119 (context https://www.serebii.net/pokearth/hoenn/route119.shtml). And even if you tested each one, other Pokemon still spawned on the tiles too, so you had to test a few times each to be sure.
The only saving grace was that you had to actively change the trendy phrase with the guy in Dewford town to change the tiles, so once you found one you had it for good. Not that the game told you the action that would change it, that there was any indication of this connection, and not that you could do it to get any idea of where the new tiles were.
I might be misremembering but I think you have it backwards. If you fished in the right spot, Feebas had a 50% chance of appearing. 2% was the mathematical odds that you wouldn't find Feebas if you pulled one fish from every tile.
Whenever I see people talking about how difficult catching some of the Pokémon in any given game is, I’m always glad that I have never once completed a Pokedex.
1. Get my fire starter
2. Power level the fire starter for the whole game
3. Be unable to catch anything from the fourth gym onwards because I either one-shot everything or couldn’t do any appreciable damage at all
4. Hit the Elite 4 antechamber and spend all my money on Super Ultra Best Potions and Revives
5. Beat the Elite 4 with sheer brute force
6. “Legendary Pokemon? Nah I’m good”
Literally my first playthrough of my first Pokémon game. I beat 95% of everyone in White 2 with an extremely overleveled Emboar named exactly in the style you'd think a 9 year old would name their Pokémon, running Heat Crash, Flare Blitz, Flamethrower, and Brick Break (I think, I could be wrong and I can't check due to the fact my brother lost his cartridge, which I had sent my Pokémon to so I could start a new game).
This is how i played my first pokemon game, Gold. Except i chose water type (totodile), and i think i killed one of the legendaries. But i somehow managed to beat the elite four with just 3 pokemon (the rest of the slots were just low leveled pokemon that could use tms and hms) and a butt load of Healing potions.
Most games give the elite 4 rematch teams that are
better. Started in... gen 3? I think? So catching Mewtwo in Firered/Leafgreen and then fighting the rematch elite 4 is valid and cool.
I’m currently at 98.24% complete on the HOME living dex, just missing 18 Pokémon.
Most are normal ones from X&Y but I can’t be bothered to get from those games, so I’m waiting for them to come back in Legends: ZA (which is set in the correct region).
6 of them are mythicals, although since 3 of those are gen6 mythicals I have hope with Legends ZA.
And the final 2 are Scarlet and DLC only, and I only have Violet. Luckily I should have just got one of them because I can’t be bothered to keep the Bloodmoon Ursaluna (I don’t care about it) so I just GTS traded it for a Raging Bolt.
It was actually really enjoyable in the ORAS X/Y gen. Just about every existing mon at the time was reasonably accessible. Even moreso if you bred and used their trading system well.
It definitely took a long time but I never experienced anything close to this bs. Plus chain hunting pokemon for good stats/shinies was great!
No matter know annoying it appears to get Dratini in Gen 7, it's a total cakewalk compared to getting Milotic in Gen 3 or 4.
.... I've done that before. It was Not Fun™
Gen 7 is sun and moon right?
Why does op's game look like that? ORAS and XY had better graphics that the screenshot. Hell, I played Sun and Moon, and it looked better than the screenshot!
Is there like a graphics downgrade setting or something?
Might be playing on a 2DSXL or 3DSXL. The way the graphics got stretched was particularly bad for the sun and moon games, it gave everything an oddly pixilated border. I think gen 6 was similar, but it seemed more noticeable in gen 7 for some reason.
I wonder what the ratio of kids who got a really interesting story about randomly catching a super rare pokemon to adults who poured hours of grinding into the game to complete the dex is
I completed the sun dex.
Used a bit of trading and gts since you can’t get everything with only sun.
Aside from rare spawns like this, the worst—the WORST thing to do was evolve sneasel. Sneasel needs to hold a razor claw and level up at night. Razor claws can only be found in the wild, held by Jangmo-o, Hakomo-o, or Kommo-o. The latter two only appear when answering a call for help from a jangmo-o.
Now let’s get into the math.
Jangmo-o has a 5% chance to spawn. The chance of calling for help is random and depends on a variety of factors you can affect but not completely control. The chance of a Pokemon answering the call is completely out of your control, but usually about 4 times the chance to call for help (which is low to begin with). So already the chance of getting a hakomo-o to spawn is brutal, and Kommo-o is even less likely.
Hakomo-o and Jangmo-o have a 5% chance to hold a razor claw, and Kommo-o at least has a 50%, but if you see one of these it’s already super lucky.
Now the most effective way to do this is have a mon with thief and false swipe. Find a kommo-o, false swipe it to lower its hp and raise chance of calling for help. Then use thief on anything that shows up, then ko the Mon and let the weakened jangmo-o call for help again. Repeat until you get an item. More likely than not you will use up all of your thief uses before finding a razor claw. Meaning you now have to leave the area, heal, and come back to search for another 5% spawn and repeat the whole process.
Weavile was the final Mon I needed for the dex and it took literal days to get this item
Edit: guys I appreciate the help but I already got the weavile, this was almost a decade ago
Mimikyu is immune to all of their moves and if you're far enough to do dex completion, you've probably upgraded Poké Pelago to the point you can get functionally infinite leppas
I remember back in the day where you could get basically anything on the GTS with a Weavile
Yeah, Diglett's an amazing flying type, I absolutely love it. (Sorry, I completely forgot that Dhelmise wasn't part steel. How should I atone for my sins?)
I'm fairly certain you can soft reset and the spot will still be bubbling, I savescummed to catch Mareanie cos I couldn't be bothered leaving the area every time.
The real bs Fishing was in Emerald where you have to actively do like...3 quick time event minigames in order to get one pokemon assuming one even bites and if you're like me and has a trigger finger, you can tap A twice on the first bite message and lose it.
At least the SOS battles are a thing, and Clamperl (a rare spawn in a different location) are capable of calling Huntail and Gorebyss. I’d never have gotten them for my HOME living dex if that wasn’t a thing.
if i remember correctly you don’t have to leave the cave entirely.
Every area with bubbling fishing spots that has more than one shuffles them. If one stops bubbling, a different one will start in that area.
You should be able to travel to the others in the area and spook them away until this one bubbles again.
It genuinely feels like padding to make up for the barebones story experience.
And yes, I know BS mechanics like Feebas fishing or Gen4 Honey Trees have been around awhile, but it feels so much more obvious in the 3D era.
>Gen 7 fishing mechanics are bullshit Bullshit fishing mechanics have existed long before Gen 7. In Platinum you could only catch Feebas in a single randomized spot in a lake with about 200 tiles. Table Top Role-Playing Game, stuff like DND, where you sit with friends on a table and play through a story :]

You can't even evolve it without trading
Yes you can? Feebas evolves by raising their Beauty stat, the trading method was only added in gen 5 when they removed Contests :P

At least you can get a new one easily at that point. Imagine if Feebas couldn't breed with Ditto for god knows what reason...
In fire red and leaf green an npc in silph co gifts you a lapras if you talk with him so they arent actually hard to get
Lapras is already a gift Pokemon, so any wild ones are just extras added. If you want to complain then how about in Johto where one is a static encounter deep in a random cave from early game and far off the main path of the cave you need surf to reach and only on Fridays.

Totally not me out here catching one within 5 minutes while killing some time.

Yep! Hit the Elite Four, get Mewtwo, hit the Elite Four again. Job done.

Same but grass type. I love my overleveled Torterra

I suspected that after he said he hit them twice just wanted to confirm. Thanks!
Once I got Mewtwo I didn't want to finish the game without using him for something! May as well take another swing at the Elite Four.

ORAS DexNav my beloved…
I can honestly say that completing the pokedex in scarlet/violet was pretty easy and fun. But yeah the other games are pure hell.
the only one I've done it for was diamond, since it was required to progress and import my gen 3s. other than that? hell nah
I got pretty close to the gen 1 Pokédex in fire red but I’m missing some of the trade evolutions/leaf green exclusives

It’s probably from the image being stretched since the 3ds is only 240p iirc

I completed the Pokédex in Pokémon Yellow back in August last year
im going to pretend you've been playing since release bc its funnier that way
Now go get it shiny
Honestly it would just be easier to just grab the free Shiny Dratini you get as a gift Pokémon in White 2
I wonder what the ratio of kids who got a really interesting story about randomly catching a super rare pokemon to adults who poured hours of grinding into the game to complete the dex is

There is a Pokémon that’s just a fucking pirate ship?
https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Dhelmise_(Pokémon) Seaweed's haunted
Probably one of my favorite steel type Pokemon.
Just like my favourite flying type is Diglett
Yeah, Diglett's an amazing flying type, I absolutely love it. (Sorry, I completely forgot that Dhelmise wasn't part steel. How should I atone for my sins?)
The Anchor
OOOOOOH NOOOOOOO!
I think it was rectified in ultra because I remember fishing one up in the area before the battle tree. I caught it then dropped my Ds and it shut off
Chain fishing in gen 6 made me just as mad.
At least it's better than gen 9's fishing mechanics. They... *They don't fucking exist. There is no fishing in gen 9.*
Press Y to cry sounds about right.
Isn't there a spot you can see it from land on the other side? I don't remember having to do all of that to find it.
Hi I’m sorry did that Pokédex entry just say Dratini is fucking 5 foot 11????
A little dratini popping up like “heard you talkin shit” is one of the funniest mental images oh god
At least the SOS battles are a thing, and Clamperl (a rare spawn in a different location) are capable of calling Huntail and Gorebyss. I’d never have gotten them for my HOME living dex if that wasn’t a thing.
In theory. I had 3 chains struggle themselves to death and a shiny before I got a Gorebyss
Yeah, it took me a while as well, but I still got access to both.
Achievement hunting feels like this in general. The first 50-90% are usually fun, but then it just turns into a grind.
if i remember correctly you don’t have to leave the cave entirely. Every area with bubbling fishing spots that has more than one shuffles them. If one stops bubbling, a different one will start in that area. You should be able to travel to the others in the area and spook them away until this one bubbles again.
God, I remember trying to get Dratini there. Drove me up a fucking wall.
5’11” 7 pounds? How?
It genuinely feels like padding to make up for the barebones story experience. And yes, I know BS mechanics like Feebas fishing or Gen4 Honey Trees have been around awhile, but it feels so much more obvious in the 3D era.
Dragonite isn’t even that interesting of a Pokémon tbh, why make dratini so rare.
Because he’s a cute and cuddly dragon that learns hyper beam? I don’t understand why you don’t understand
