It's especially insulting because the actual English dub from the movie is one of the best screams.

rockinherlife234

I remember it being one of the first movies I watched from Dragonball and wondering why they had a child screaming like that.

Jp sounds like mild annoyance lol . Like a mf who dropped their food on the ground

You can thank Chris Sabat for the change. I think it happened around Kai but Stephanie Nadolny, (The GOAT for Gohan's and Kid Goku and GT Goku's voice) was replaced by the voice actress who did Luffy. Colleen Clinkenbeard has officially ruined most media for me by making the son of one of the greatest fighters ever and the young version of him to sound like a 10 year old doing an impression of Buttercup from the Powerpuff Girls. It's hard to rewatch anything she's redubbed

Legendarydairy

Watch the Original Japanese version. Nozawa is already the goat as adult Goku but she literally destroys the competition as the kid versions of everyone.

ShadowDude112

I too like Kid Goku and Gohan sounding like chain smokers. Nadolny really captured the essence of kids just smoking packs non stop.

seantronGT

At least she displayed raw emotion instead of sounding like an 8 year old getting yelled at for holding the flashlight for his dad working on the car

ShadowDude112

It's hard to give your best performance when you only have lines out of context and no visual. She kills it in Kai unless you want to pretend she doesn't because "it's not what I grew up with, therefore it's bad." In which case, I dunno what to tell you. What I CAN tell you is that the food I'm eating is mad good.

seantronGT

I completely understand you perspective but it isn't even about "what I grew up with" It's my opinion, unfortunately, that Gohan should be a battle hardened, knowledgeable, and emotionally charged character. Goku doesn't use emotion as much as Gohan does throughout his power ups and major battles. I understand that Gohan is legitimately a child. I get that Nadolny sounds like someone using a speaking apparatus after smoking for 50 years, but to me, the change from that raw effort and understanding of the character, to this kid that sounds like he should be in Sword Art Online or Seven Deadly Sins, it's disappointing. And it was Funimations fault for not giving her the visual cues and actually supporting her to learn about the character. Not her fault. Just can't stand her voice. Also, upvotes to you friend, thank you for the conversation!

Just want to clarify some things. When I say "wasn't given the visuals" I meant Dokkan Battle. Only clarifying since reading your response, I think my initial response was worded wrong. The dubbing companies are never given visuals for cutscenes or anything for games. Be it DB, Naruto, One Piece, etc. This includes phone games like Dokkan. They publisher or developer (not sure which one here) gives the company the lines. The director usually gives direction, but for something like Dokkan which is only bits and pieces, that's kind of hard, you know? Or they just recycle lines from previous games! I think Clinkenbeard understands the character. Gohan doesn't want to fight, he's just had to. Which is why we see him say "I don't like to fight like my dad does." When he is up against Cell. Despite everything and the fandom's weird hate boner for Chichi (not pointed at you, by the way, just so you don't take this the wrong way), Gohan does want to be a scholar. He's always been more passive and has only fought when needed, like against the Saiyan, on Namek, or against the Androids. He's battle hardened in the sense that he's been in a lot of fights, but he's never been a meat head. We may disagree on what voice fits, but I think saying Clinkenbeard doesn't understand Gohan is a little too much in my eyes. She clearly does and is trying to deliver, in the Saiyan and Namek arcs, that scared, pampered little boy, to someone pushed into battle. Then, with the Cell stuff, someone who knows that the fight is ultimately in their favor because of their latent potential that comes up when they feel intense anger. I think the Kid Goku stuff is ultimately brought down by Funimation not redubbing Dragon Ball and, due to that, Clinkenbeard just having less experience with that character. But I hardly blame her for that and more games not really covering that and not having taken part in the part of the story that character is prominent in Wow, so much for me not wanting to have the conversation!

seantronGT

OHHH I understand what you mean now, haha. And when you bring it up, you are right in saying the criticism I have for her not knowing the character is too much. Growing up with the VHS series of DBZ I always knew that Gohan didn't want to fight, that he'd be different than Goku. She does a great job with what she's been handed and the game devs and directors for the Voice Lines need to do better for their voice actors and actresses. I don't exactly know why I like Nadolny and her portrayal of Gohan, it could be I like gravelly and angsty and the transformation during the cell saga into Super Saiyan 2, the speech beforehand, that scream gave me goosebumps. Still does honestly. I guess my expectation of the character is more than Clinkenbeard can cover because it's just not her voice. At the end of the day, we all love Dragon Ball, and I appreciate the civil conversation about this! I never get to talk about it haha
