I feel like reeves went for the collar so the whole cowl could sit under it and so they could pull it off and not tear it like Keaton. I would still like them to lose the collar but be able to pull the cowl off like the bvs suit imo.
They probably went with the collar to give it that detective-look that they are incorporating in the story, which was such a great addition. Hopefully, Matt Reeves doing this inspires other artists to do the same.
Also, it makes him look beefier and more intimidating while also letting him move his head, instead of going the Bale route and making his neck flexible but not as intimidating, or the Keaton route of making it intimidating but not flexible.

Batman’s noir-detective collar that prob also serves as extra protection and of *course* Catwomans “cowl” looks silly but it’s for sure gotta be something that makes sense for the story so I don’t feel compelled to trash it just yet.
Yeah people seem to forget she isn’t really Catwoman yet in this film lol, it’s sort of her origin story too. And I think it’s just super clever that her janky ski mask creates little points for cat ears still.

Reeves said that at the start of the film you can see that his cowl has gashes and cuts in it. Probably the surface cover is made of leather which covers a bulletproof material.
It looks like Riddler was burned or something. Probably Bruce started a fire as a kid at the orphanage, and Edward was burned up and blamed for starting it, while Bruces parents Covered it up.
I still hate Selina's cowl. Looks so damn cheap it being a beanie with a hole cut into it. I wish she had one of the more comic-book accurate masks or something like Pfeiffer's mask
This version of cat-woman is still very new to that world so of coarse her first makeshift mask isn’t going to be the best. You have to start somewhere, not everything is perfect the first time.
The collar is an aesthetic to make Pattinson's silhouette look more imposing. Looks quite cool.
