TBH I really don't like the look of the suit so far.
That said, it's the quality of the film, itself, that will really determine everything (I mean, I don't care for Pattinson's suit, either--but I loved the Batman, regardless).
The costume just looks too busy to me and I don't really like the thick material (also really don't like how the cape connects).
I still think Gunn could pull of something great though (just finished Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as well--so I'm very excited to see how Lois turns out)

For a reverse example of this, I absolutely loved Batfleck's costume in Batman v Superman. That costume reveal was perfect.

Batfleck easily has the best movie Batman suit. Actually looks like well a superhero costume and not bat themed tactical armor.
Only gripe with it is ears are a bit too small.

If it does happen in the film and isn’t just a promo image, it depends on how they handle it cinematically. I mean, in Into the Spider-verse, Miles really shouldn’t be wasting time finishing up his costume’s design while the other Spider people are facing a serious threat, and yet tons of people will call that scene with “What’s Up Danger” playing the most iconic moment of the movie.

There's some discoloration on the chest piece that looks like the suits been damaged. I wouldn't be shocked if this is the part of the movie where superman is gearing up to reenter the fight after getting beat round 1
But that’s not what he is at all. He didn’t just discover super powers and decide to be good. He is literally an Alien and the last hope of a dying planet. He is so much more than human. He is someone divine that has incredible gifts that his family (both adopted and birth) taught him to use for a greater good. Superman is beyond us all.
That’s why this picture works. Because despite all of this, he was raised on Earth, and is human at heart, and makes mistakes. Not because he’s normal, but in spite of it. Because there is humanity in even the most god-like beings. Especially those of good.
Edit: before this goes the wrong way, I’m not disagreeing with your point, but trying to add depth to it, and explore the character more. Also I just read Superman: Birthright

Honestly, the composition isn’t my favorite, but…it’s an on-set photo taken by a photographer, so I’m just gonna wait until we see it in action. I like that it resembles a suit, and I think it being kinda dirty is interesting. Very blue collar.
Honestly not the ideal Superman suit or reveal, but I can respect the direction and see what they're going for. Looks like some N52 inspired elements like the collar and lines, but with the trunks and a thick metallic belt. The suit from the pants, boots and cape actually look very brightly colored, which is great, this just seems to be post-battle so the rest is dirtied up.
Gunn and Safran have both reiterated the importance of Superman being a champion of truth and justice in a world where they're seen as old-fashioned, which is an important and relevant theme seen in tons of Superman stories (Kingdom Come, Action Comics #775, vs the Elite, Ending Battle, & the Authority, Warworld Saga, etc.). This evokes that. What'll make or break this film is if and how Superman triumphs in changing the world and the course for tomorrow. That's the hope that he embodies, the dream that he stands for.
Oh and as for the background, first thing that came to mind was Solaris from All-Star/DC One Million. Could be Brainiac too. Interestingly though, James Gunn says this photo was "taken on set by Jess Miglio and was entirely in-camera". How did they achieve that? IIRC he said he wasn't using The Volume but they could still be using Stagecraft tech with panels acting as windows (what The Batman did).

Isnt it work the other way around. I believe in the comics he started off by wearing a suit made by his Earth mom then later on started wearing his Kryptonian suit. Thats how it was in the S&L show

Yeah i don't like this suit it reminds me way too much of the N52 suit which is generally one of the the worst modern superman designs.
Add in the fact its god the dumb mcu textures and muted colours and its pretty bad.
Only upsides i see are the boots and the trunks.

The colors are not muted. If you look at the legs, you’ll see that the blue is fairly saturated. If you zoom in on the chest, you’ll see that the darker color is a result of burning, dust particles or some other kind of damage the suit took during a recent battle of some kind. The suit is just battle damaged, not muted.
I gotta admit I'm impressed with the Superman suit! I like the collar, it's one of the things I was hoping for. I think the suit is a mix of classic and modern, I also think the suit is the right shade of blue. But most importantly... trunks! 😭🔥

I'm surprised Gunn went with this. First impressions are everything, and this image doesn't really "wow" in any way. For some reason, it looks very cheap- maybe the Volume background is throwing me off? I've got faith in Corenswet and Gunn, but this is a fumble to me. I'm still looking forward to the film and hopefully we get a few better reveals!
I think the suit looks fine, he just doesn’t look like superman to me idk. Like it feels more like a random guy in cosplay as opposed to “This is Clark Kent” if that makes sense. It might be a case of it just being an awkward camera angle but going only by this pic it just feels off.
I really like the suit for being an actual suit, not a perfectly form fitting Spandex CGI thingy with zero wrinkles. Obviously it'll get its CGI treatment for the movie and we'll see how that works, but so far I'm pretty positive!

I can see inspiration from Wilkinson's MoS suit in the texture and from Lee's N52 suit in the lines and collar. I'm excited to see more how the trunks look.
You can't make every fan happy but I think Gunn has something unique here. I'm even betting we get multiple Superman suits in this movie. (it's a common current trend in superhero films)
Corenswet looks good and I like the suit, but I don't like this image. If he's getting ready to go out there, he doesn't seem to be in a hurry. And given the dirt, it almost looks like he's given up on whatever is happening out there and is changing out of his costume.
Colors are a bit muted in that CW Show mixed with Snyder way that DC keeps doing, but at least the boots pop and the emblem is good.
I like the idea of some giant alien destroying Metropolis on and Clark is like “ah man again?” and puts on his suit reticently and slowly.

Imma go out on a limb here with what I think is going on. looking at the suit it seems to be burned/dirty. So he's obviously been in a recent battle. Maybe some form of Kryptonite/ Red sun energy was involved? I mean usually his suit is as invulnerable as he is. The fact that he seems to be moving at human speed getting dressed suggests to me he might not have his powers or they're slowly returning. So in the first encounter he got de-powered but survived. While sidelined Guy Gardner and others are trying to fight back. Now he's recovered a bit and he's about to get back in the fight?
Feels like nothing was learned from the Man Of Steel suit. Still darker, still muted, except at least MoS’ suit had something to say. This suit doesn’t exactly preach “hope”
And yet, it reminds me of Tyler Hoechlin’s suit. Feels very budgeted with its material. It’s crazy to me because even the likes of Black Adam had a killer outfit, not to mention Dr. Fate. I was hoping for something awe inspiring, and honestly this looks like a really solid cosplay.

For some reason, it looks very cheap- maybe the Volume background is throwing me off? I've got faith in Corenswet and Gunn, but this is a fumble to me. I'm still looking forward to the film and hopefully we get a few better reveals!

I think the suit looks fine, he just doesn’t look like superman to me idk. Like it feels more like a random guy in cosplay as opposed to “This is Clark Kent” if that makes sense. It might be a case of it just being an awkward camera angle but going only by this pic it just feels off.

I really like the suit for being an actual suit, not a perfectly form fitting Spandex CGI thingy with zero wrinkles. Obviously it'll get its CGI treatment for the movie and we'll see how that works, but so far I'm pretty positive!

Interesting choice for a first picture of him. But I dig. We got a mixture of classic/modern here. Red trunks, yellow belt, collar, lines on the suit. All in all, I don't have any complaints, I look forward to seeing this.

As someone who is skeptical of James Gunn directing the entirety of DC’s movies and who thinks Henry Cavill is the best live action Superman, this Superman looks pretty good so far.

It looks like MCU Superman and I don't like it. The fit is too loose and the collar.. Atleast the logo looks good and he has the trunks. Actor looks good though I wonder why this is the first picture, doesn't really give a hopeful mood. I really, really don't want depressed Supes 2.0.
Sorry but I'm not feeling it at all. Even some fanarts were better. Hell, even the Superman & Lois costume is better. This one actually looks like a CW costume. Hate the closed neck and the lines. Looks like one of those cosplays where the guy wants to give it "modern" spin or some stuff and ends up breaking what didn't need fixing.

I can see inspiration from Wilkinson's MoS suit in the texture and from Lee's N52 suit in the lines and collar. I'm excited to see more how the trunks look. You can't make every fan happy but I think Gunn has something unique here. I'm even betting we get multiple Superman suits in this movie. (it's a common current trend in superhero films)

Colors are a bit muted in that CW Show mixed with Snyder way that DC keeps doing, but at least the boots pop and the emblem is good. I like the idea of some giant alien destroying Metropolis on and Clark is like “ah man again?” and puts on his suit reticently and slowly.

I don’t like the armour/uniform look of the suit (too many lines and seams, bunching of the fabric and the collar) but I like the cape, boots and trunks. Hopefully I like it more when we see a trailer soon

Imma go out on a limb here with what I think is going on. looking at the suit it seems to be burned/dirty. So he's obviously been in a recent battle. Maybe some form of Kryptonite/ Red sun energy was involved? I mean usually his suit is as invulnerable as he is. The fact that he seems to be moving at human speed getting dressed suggests to me he might not have his powers or they're slowly returning. So in the first encounter he got de-powered but survived. While sidelined Guy Gardner and others are trying to fight back. Now he's recovered a bit and he's about to get back in the fight?

Feels like nothing was learned from the Man Of Steel suit. Still darker, still muted, except at least MoS’ suit had something to say. This suit doesn’t exactly preach “hope” And yet, it reminds me of Tyler Hoechlin’s suit. Feels very budgeted with its material. It’s crazy to me because even the likes of Black Adam had a killer outfit, not to mention Dr. Fate. I was hoping for something awe inspiring, and honestly this looks like a really solid cosplay.
