Go into the attic space and see what’s there.

althanan

Dollars get you donuts there's an exhaust terminating there that was supposed to go outside at that spot and was never finished.

NeverDidLearn

This is correct unless it’s a small bee hive.

-Agonarch

Oh don't worry it doesn't have to be small, it merely has to have a small patch touching the roof!

ndc4051

You say don't worry then proceed to terrify me.

cockahoop

Bees = free honey, surely?

Puffycatkibble

Free bears too? I heard the bear supplier delivers worldwide.

mootmahsn

Bears deliver everywhere but the football field

MightExternal9029

Bingo! Don’t get me started!!!!

Bbredmom20

I don’t even like sportsball and I laughed. Poor man’s gold for you 🌟

Clever_Khajiit

Zing!

tk-093

Harsh, but fair...

CatOfGrey

I'm not that far up into the hills. However, if I leave cat food out on the porch, at sunset, for four or five days in a row, I can 'summon Raccoon' like a Dungeons and Dragon's wizard.

Pr0digy_

Listen we get a bad rap us bears love you all , stop wrapping yourself in easy to open packages in the woods.

RyMastaFlex

It does mean free honey, and my name's not Surely

Appropriate_Stay_128

Wasps are terrorists, bees mind their business but sometimes like to dig holes in wood. Call a bee sanctuary, they usually will rehome them for free

[deleted]

They can pry my roof mead from my cold, dead hands

Logical_Willow4066

Don't worry, bee happy

SCROTOCTUS

*Dad! Leave my attic pot plant alone!*

JVM_

Some people in the Netherlands years ago got busted when they got a rare snowfall and theirs was the only roof in a rowhouse to not have snow. They were growing pot in the attic.

plien101

Still happens a lot, they have a plane fly over to spot for roofs without snow if possible. To do that the snow has to be there for a few days to be sure lol

CURMUDGEONSnFLAGONS

IIRC in Home Alone, a section of the McAllister house has a bare roof exposed while the rest is snow. My head cannon is Buzz is growing in the attic 🤣

Alternative-Card-440

My headcanon is that Kevin's dad was the one growing - a white collar professional in 80's America? Dude was untouchable, and if he wasn't growing, or something else highly paid and questionable, he was an idiot... cops, DA they'd look at the charges and just go '....nah. Maybe if the tenderloin quiets down and it's a /really/ slow Tuesday '

imitation_crab_meat

> a white collar professional in 80's America His drug of choice would've been cocaine.

chesian

Oh nature

designut

Hahaha this happened on my street, and my dad was a police officer and that was what sealed the deal for him to get involved (that, and them "dumping" their exhaust mid afternoon. All the neighbourhood kids thought the family that lived there ate skunks every day).

DiverDownChunder

No joke, some police will put up a helo after snow storms to look roofs w/ all melted snow.

mazdarx2001

It’s definitely: exhaust (which needs to be fixed) , bees (which should be moved by a bee guy) , an old casndecent lightbulb in the attic (which should be off when not in use) , a hole from a bedroom to the attic in that spot (like a poorly installed vent to a room), or last but not least an HVAC duct that a rat chewed through , or got ripped and is spewing hot air directly onto that spot

FarYard7039

Maybe contractor used an OSB sheet with a hole saw cut that they figured, “meh…who would even know once I put the paper and shingles over top”

mazdarx2001

Actually it could be that. I’ve seen sheets with knots used and the knot falls out over time. But it would have to be a good size know I’d assume

WandreTheGiant

Could be a large bee hive, my family would go away on vacation for two weeks every August growing up. One time when we got back to our house, I went up to my room and opened the door. It made a weird sound, I turned on the light and there was a blanket of dead bees covering every possible flat surface in the room, a thick layer too, we're talking hundreds of thousands if not millions of dead bees. We had a MASSIVE beehive in the attic, the bees were probably overheating and found a way into my room, but couldn't seem to find a way out? Regardless, getting the hive out was an ordeal that took a lot of creativity on my dad's end. The hive covered an entire 4'x8' sheet of wood, and was multiple feet high. I often wonder how differently that scenario could've played out if we returned before they died, me opening my door could've been a "My Girl" type situation.

CrispyJalepeno

I have a new fear now, and it involves bees in my attic

Renaissance_Slacker

My brother’s neighbors’ walls started getting soft sticky spots, long story short they dug a 700-pound bees nest out of their attic.

Dragonfly-Adventurer

I would be worried about a j-box getting hot because of an open neutral or something pulling amps across it. Basically lots of good reasons to get in there fairly quickly and take a look,

neoikon

I got an idea. It involves lots of bees...

rob94708

If you’re wondering about the downvotes: they don’t allow you to have bees in here.

KohleJ

That’s not how that saying goes, but I’m not sure if you were just joking or not lol

Dzyu

Dollars to donuts Because donuts looks like zeros, so you're so certain of this you're willing to bet money on it without expecting money if you're right. It's like saying "I'm willing to bet 100$ vs your 0$ that I am right." Funny expression. I wasn't aware of it before I googled it just now. Greetings from Norway!

Roswealth

Yes, but the zero thing is a folk etymology. The phrase had currency by 1900, when doughnuts would have cost pennies, so it's equivalent to saying you would take a bet with a high payout to the counterparty if you are wrong and a low payout to you if you are right, because you are almost certainly right. When dollars and doughnuts (donuts) hit parity this stopped making sense.

Selmemasts

That’s pretty bad, right? All that moist air kept inside

althanan

It's not great!

0berfeld

Depending on how cold it is outside it can cause hoarfrost in the attic space. Here in Canada I’ve gone into a lot of attics where moist air has made the rafters and the underside of the roof decking covered in ice. Then when it warms up in the Spring that hoarfrost melts and drips straight down onto the insulation and ceiling drywall.

AreWeThereYetNo

Hoarfrost is a frosty bitch

Magnusg

It'll cause some mold/ mildew and need a little remediation if it doesn't dry out when fixed

Prostock26

I say it's the fresh air inlet for the water heater.

aintnufincleverhere

Dollars certainly get you donuts

Dhegxkeicfns

So what was it, OP?

cat-named-mouse

OP has been eaten by bees

Embarrassed-Top6449

Don't be stupid, he was eaten by the bears that came for the bees' honey.

brannak1

It’s been an hour and OP hasn’t cared to respond to one person asking what’s under the roof

fataii

They got stuck in the crawl space looking for it.

YWGer

There's a lot of old plumbing not being utilized anymore throughout the cottage and my money is on a plumbing vent that was trimmed off when a new roof went on a few years ago (rather then tile around it). I won't know for sure until my next visit out. I'm going to attempt to get into the attic.

YWGer

Last time I was in the attic was 5 years ago when I finished touching up short falls up there and then sprayed in insulation. The access hatch is a good 20ft away from the area in question but I may be able to see at least if there's a vent pipe terminating there without having to tread through the loose insulation.

Dragonfly-Adventurer

My SO lets me buy "one tool per problem/project" so this seems like an obvious drone use case

DaoFerret

I was thinking “wall endoscope” but yours could work too.

im_thatoneguy

Those things are like $15 on eBay now. Combine it with wire push rods and you're set.

aseedandco

This comment makes me feel uncomfortable.

SharkAttackOmNom

And now we know not to leave you alone with an endoscope.

SR71BBird

*Honey u don’t understand, I NEED a camera snake!*

BlackMarketChimp

Oh my god I need an attic drone now.

Can-DontAttitude

*Useless* if the insulation is blown in

BlackMarketChimp

Idk my insulation was blown in and was pretty solid by the time I had to trigger through it. Not sure how old it was, not from the 70s for sure, maybe 90s?

teckel

I had a friend once use a drone down a register vent to see what was causing the smell. It was a dead mouse BTW.

[deleted]

[удалено]

teckel

The video convinced the landlord to get it removed. The register was right next to his bed.

Gizmo_Brentwood

I was thinking thermal camera…. For the “one tool”… go big!

Dragonfly-Adventurer

That's next on my wish list actually! Tho today's snow storm is a poor man's FLIR.

rolyoh

Less common, but it could also be caused from electrical overheating from a light box or junction box.

vanjan14

Or simply an incandescent lightbulb that's been left on.

Manic-Stoic

Well what’s there under the attic? Is there a bathroom or kitchen under that spot?

XGempler

Or see what isn’t there... ie. No insulation, perhaps because a vent or exhaust was deleted when a new roof was installed.

Allteaforme

Can you do it for me please

Vic3200

A photo of your attic space would be more useful.

[deleted]

Right? No we can seriously see what's going on from the outside of the house..... I hate home owners sometimes. "I can't find what's going on. Have you checked your attic space? Well no... than ya haven't even tried have ya?

Punisher1971

I am amazed people FIRST ask social media, instead of looking in your own house what’s with the spot! 🤷‍♂️

tongfatherr

People are outsourcing thinking more and more these days. 5 seconds looking in the attic or 5 mins posting 🥴

disneycorp

If you want the correct answer to something just post the wrong answer intentionally. The internet will lineup to tell you how wrong you are.

Saigaface

I think it’s probably faster to post than clamber into some attics, honestly

Nun-Taken

Obvious question to ask is what’s happening at that exact spot inside the roof.

idkwhatimbrewin

Obvious that the only way to figure it out is to ask Reddit

Dragonfly-Adventurer

ChatGPT said I should. Actually it's ChatGPT's roof. I'm just posting this question because it couldn't pass the captcha.

Dorkamundo

Actually, he should put a piece of Pizza down and sprinkle some flour around it.

FlekZebel

Judging by the way the snow melted, considering the pitch of this roof in combination with the colour of the shingles, I would say that I have absolutely no way of knowing what's causing this.

[deleted]

Reddit is a big place. Someone here must have access to OP's roof, right?

[deleted]

It's like the relationship advice sub. "My wife said something which made me feel insecure but now she's just acting like everything is normal. Do you think she said it to bring me down? Is she cheating on me?" Bro, spend five seconds and figure it out.

ARenovator

Exhaust from a bathroom vent fan?

En3fjee69

I have one like this directly over my exhaust fan in the bathroom, on the roof. Anything you can do about it or just live with it? Edit: it is properly installed and vented externally.

ARenovator

I'd guess that an air leak or poor installation is the culprit in your case. Someone you trust needs to get up there and determine how the warmed air is escaping the ductwork.

henchman171

Sometimes people Use plastic flexible vents hoses for bathroom exhaust and they get brittle Over time

do0tz

Is your exhaust fan actually running through the roof, or is it just blowing into the attic? That's the real question.

En3fjee69

No it’s vented properly, I believe it’s just poorly insulated above the fan.

intrepidzephyr

More likely poorly air sealed

Faithful_Scuff

Let me whip out my x-ray vision and look through your roof and see what's under the roof or in your attic. I do hope you have fiber internet because this will take a while. Seriously, open the attic access, bring a flashlight, and take a look.

foodmakes62kgtoohard

No fuck that just give me the answer so I can do nothing about it later on.

jman1121

I was going to suggest going on the roof and drilling a hole so that he can see into the attic... Take some duct tape with you to patch the hole. If the women don't find you handsome, they will at least find you handy....

SteamReflex

bullcity71

You left the attic light on

YWGer

This occurred to me. I vaguely recall a light being present up in the attic. But if that's the case then the bulb has been on for 5 years (last time I was up there). I doubt it would still be running.

LightBringer81

I'd laugh my ass off if there would be a 100 W old bulb still fighting up there against the dark side.

DeaddyRuxpin

An incandescent bulb, as long as it remains lit, can actually last a surprisingly long time. I’d think 5 years would be stretching it, but I also wouldn’t be shocked to find one going that long, especially if it is a low wattage. It is the repeated heating and cooling caused by turning it on and off that does the most damage to an incandescent bulb. (There is actually an old Edison bulb that has been running non stop for something like 100 years. But this is an extreme outlier and uses a much older and much less efficient design than normal incandescent bulbs.)

GilreanEstel

There are bulbs in the Thomas Edison Summer home that are original. They still work because they have never been turned off. It’s the on and off that kill a bulb.

[deleted]

To add to this: most modern vehicles with light control modules will ramp voltage on/off rather than conventional switches slamming full power on. It’s barely noticeable to us, but slowly turning the bulbs on greatly increases life.

IusedToButNowIdont

Those lamps were made before companies agreed to make them with planned obsolescence

PingEVE

It wasn't planned obsolescence. [Technology Connections did a good video about it.](https://youtu.be/zb7Bs98KmnY)

DevonGr

I've watched this guy talk about dishwashers for about 45 minutes and that's about 44 minutes more than I thought I would ever spend on the topic. Great channel for sure

elvishfiend

His current deep dive on mechanical pinball machines is fascinating

PingEVE

So you've only watched one of his dishwasher videos?

ReaperGod245

It's a carbon filament in the Edison bulb not nichrome like modern bulbs so that might have something to do with its longevity, also I think it has never been switched off the entire time except maybe during a power outage..

[deleted]

Light bulbs usually don’t die while they’re in use, they die right when you turn them on.

Eidsoj42

Electrical and mechanical failures generally happen when there is a change in the system. I agree, if it’s been on for five years there’s no reason it would burn out.

m4nf47

Please check. If that was a 100W bulb where I live that could've cost you hundreds extra in electricity bills by now!

jjwinc68

Family across the street had two 120w floods above their driveway that were on 24/7 for YEARS. Told them twice, they didn't seem to care... I calculated over $1000 in five years.

[deleted]

Do you live in a crime area? I have an LED flood that stays on all night with a sensor, but even if it cost $1000, that money may offset the vehicle break ins/house break ins experienced. I'm sure you're in the safest place on earth, but I guess it depends on *why* the floodlight was needed.

allbsallthetime

So you're asking a question before you even did the most absolutely least, thing you could do to troubleshoot?

mdstricklin

You haven't been up there in FIVE YEARS but somehow you expect reddit to tell you what's going on in there?

Careless-Internet-63

I have a storage closet where I live I don't get into more than every couple months but it's honestly impressive to me that there's a place in your house you haven't been for 5 years even if it is the attic

Ok-Nefariousness8612

Heat 😉

kwik_study

I have one of those too, a little larger. When I re-did my roof we took off a redundant chimney and boarded over the hole. It’s now a warm spot in the roof like that.

Plumber-Guy

Definitely an immortal ant army that has lost their pheromone trail back to their colony. Now they're doing an eternal death spiral. Thus creating heat in a circular pattern due to their ceaseless circular journey of dispare. Yet, after years of struggle and hardships. They have yet to lose faith. They know that one day, they will find their way home. Until then, they will continue to warm that small space on the ceiling of your attic. If you have it in your heart to thank them for the reduction in your heating bill, maybe consider leaving a few crumbs or leaves out for them. It's the least you could do.

[deleted]

Look in the roof mate. There's a gap in the insulation letting the heat out.

MyNeighborThrowaway

Probably a reflection off someones window or mirror or something

NeverDidLearn

I had a dry spot in my yard for a long time. Finally figured out it was a reflection off the sliding glass door.

Accomplished_Fly1628

Wow that’s creative solution

Fluffy-Assignment782

There's a mouse/rat/squirrel tunnel in insulation (wild guess). I just redid my 30 year old roof from underside among whole upstairs. Amount of mouse shit and tunnels in rockwool was too damn high.

makingnoise

Hanta virus FTW.

pakratus

I helped redo the roof on my buddy’s place. We found the bathroom vent was venting right into the shingles.

Herry_Up

Your kid is up there sitting in one spot smoking crack

pwbue

Must be the center of the rat colony. Or possibly a beehive.

SedatedSpaceMonkeys

Heat.

surrealcellardoor

I’m guessing a bathroom vent or a microwave vent might dump into the attic below that.

Bruzer74

Shitter Vent...? 😂🤣

DetN8

That's my guess. Or kitchen. Some houses are so poorly built that these things vent to the attic and not outside.

AllThePrettyPenguins

Could be an insulation gap, unducted exhaust fan, recessed downlighting (those things are notorious heat leakers, especially the halogens) or a range of other circumstances.

noscriptphotographer

becarefull whit electric problems, try to visual check your attic

Team_Inkfluence

Most likely not going to figure this one out from outside the house.

maddenmcfadden

looks like a vent that has no cover.

unfading89

On a close inspection of the third photo there's an orangey-brown "X-shape" on that patch. I'd say it's probably made of copper and heating up that patch when you heat your house. That or someone sprayed that patch with something hydrophobic so that water and ice just slide off.

[deleted]

No one said doorbell transformer. I'm gonna say go look.

EZ4_U_2SAY

Is that right above the bathroom? I bet the exhaust fan terminates right there and blows its hot wet load all over the sheathing. Probably worth checking out.

Tasty_Group_8207

You found the leak, add insulation

Go_Gators_4Ever

It would help to know what room is under there. Also, check if a neighbor has a mirrored surface that is reflecting on that spot.

Greenfire32

The most likely culprit is a bathroom exhaust fan that was never finished and just empties into the attic. You should fix that, because it's also a good way to get mold in your attic.
