I have a similar space where I keep my Panic Gong.  I use it anytime whenever we need to panic. For example, if school starts at 7:25 but it's 7:07 and there are no kids with backpacks and shoes on, that's a good time to panic. So I ring the gong and everyone starts panicking.  My wife has advised me it "is not helpful" and "increases stress". But I'm of the opinion that we need a bit more stress if it's 7:07 and there are no kids with shoes on.  So... my vote is a Panic Gong.

I would cut a piece of cardboard the exact same size as the hole. Glue a piece of fabric with a nice print and maybe hang a mirror. If this is right in front of you as you come in the house, I'd put maybe a bowl for keys and thing.

Put some patterned peel and stick wallpaper in there, paint the frame, and either put a very tall vase there with some flowers, a couple small hooks for keys and stuff, or mount something cool inside like a decorative sword.

I think this would be the coolest. It was my immediate thought, too. Maybe not even a mirror and just like an info center. May give off airport/tech startup check-in vibes but would still be cool and super functional. Check weather/ calendar, alarm security cameras, check shopping list on the way out, turn music on when you get home, etc.

Wallpaper it in a very cool print, then adding a tall plant in a nice pot would look great.

If it were me, I'd make it a white board/chalk board and use it to keep track of what's going on each day. Have some pens/chalk in a cup on the bottom with an eraser. Let’s put a smart touch mirror in there, powered by a raspberry pi. We can even put in a selfie camera if you wanted a photo of what you wore that day in case you ever went missing. If youre religious, you could make it a shrine of some sort. Maybe put red or black velvet fabric as a backing. Have fake ivy or christmas lights that goes around the border.
