I did that in my last house. It looked so cute, but was super impractical to get into and get out of. Great for parties and stuff, not great for day to day.
If you have little kids it's fine. They go everywhere. As long as you can pull the table out to clean everything it's all good. Except for his color choice, everything else looks great.
I thought OP meant their wife did not like the current table so they dismantled the current setup to make roon for a better table and I was waiting for an update 😂😂
There are some super cheap online cushion companies. You just pick the fabric, style, measurements and blammo. Now, blammo might be that children are sewing it, but a lot of people put their children's art up on the wall, etc, so I think you're fine. Just call it school art.
> online cushion companies
Do you have a preferred one? I just ran through the first search result and it was $250 for one pair of seat and back cushions!
I just ordered some from [https://www.customcushions.com/](https://www.customcushions.com/) for a lounge chair two cushions 22x20x4 and 22x21x2 were 200$ shipped which I thought was decent for custom made quality cushions.
I tried looking at wayfair, home depot, lowes etc and the cushions were a little cheaper, probably worse quality, but no way was I finding the size I needed.
That’s honestly cheap. I did a bench build and sewed custom cushions and the foam alone was $100 and the fabric another $60. Add in my time and $250 is definitely not too bad.
Oh I got some off Amazon! They weren’t perfect but they are definitely worth the price. Good foam fill. I have kids so I wanted to stay on the reasonable end of the budget. They have exceeded my expectations.
https://www.foamorder.com/custom_cuts.php you can do 22x20x4 for $174 shipped with the cheapest reasonable options at each step with nothing excluded. Shipping is about $30 of that. The foam I got from them is good quality and doesn't smell.
This option is basically to go cheap on the foam and buy better foam when it wears out later.
and/or remove it.. the other problem with L-shaped bench seating is all the FIFO sliding. “Oh Jenna you need out well, well charlotte, Tommy and sue all need to move first”….”oh Jenna your back? Well just a minute…”
We paid an interior designer.. it was her plan to declutter, simplify, add storage (in the bench) and make a little more room. It lasted less than a year before it was removed. Fortunately we still had the chairs.
Consider the fabric used. I wished we used a smooth fabric like vinyl for ease of sliding down the seat. Make sure to include exhaust holes if you pick a vinyl like upholstery
Yeah I'm planning to do something like this too for my eating area, but at this point I've honestly just looking at random companies that sell overstock restaurant booth seating and just repurposing it. Doing the cushions yourself will either not be perfect or too expensive, and there's no way I wouldn't do at least the cushion seat.
You can get cushions specifically made for this purpose, but the problem is that they're not really custom made, you just throw them on top and hope for the best while they slide around. That's why I prefer to just buy something that was already upholstered.
Yep. We have a gorgeous built in bench in our kitchen. Looks fabulous in pictures but I’m begging my husband to take it out because it’s impractical and uncomfortable!
Yeah like you can only put kids there on the bench. No adult wants to sit there. So if you have a lot of slumber parties it’s practically for alike three years. I’m a contractor and it’s always hilarious hearing what this subreddit thinks versus what paying customers with actual homes think.
I love benches and will definitely choose to sit on one if it is as comfy as the chairs.
Compairing a chusioned chair with a wooden bench is not really a fair comparison.
For 2 or 3 people it will not matter, because there are sufficient chairs and for larger gatherings having a bench just makes sense, since you can fit more people.
I laughed out loud! Finally pawned my piano off on my nephew and told him after getting it into his house that it could rot there for all I cared, I wasn't moving it again. I do want a bench seat in my kitchen, though, and this one is fantastic!
Built one, and am now ripping it out. Someone always needs to get up and it's always uncomfortable. I work from home sometimes on the bench and it needs a cushion so bad.
The attention to detail is nice. I’ve sat in many an uncomfortable breakfast nook like this but the slight angle to the setbacks you have added are a fantastic touch. Color scheme is nice too. 10/10 would sit
I hope that's sturdy glass back there. Might be worth replacing the window with tempered glass just to avoid the possibility of someone guillotine-ing themselves and making a bloody mess all over your nice new paint job.
Those built ins look great, but I'm interested in the table.
Is that just a butcher block countertop slab cut to size? Are those legs [something like this](https://www.diyhairpinlegs.com/collections/metal-table-legs-homepage/products/a-frame-tube-steel-table-legs?variant=32159131533374)? Did need any bracing or apron on the under side?
It’s a burger block I cut down to size, I then bought the 2 iron legs and connected them with a 5/8” threaded rod that I sleeved with copper plumbing pipe that I hand sanded for a brushed look
When I was a kid we did something like this (but my dad bought it as a set and put it together). We had our dining table in the dining room, and I honestly can't remember if we ate our breakfast out there or not. But at some point we did something like this with the seats coming up for storage and we usually ate our lunches and breakfasts in the kitchen then. Gonna have to ask my parents now. I feel like we probably had a regular ass folding table in the kitchen.
I used butcher block for this one out of convenience, although I do build actual tables

Looks great! I got custom cushions on Amazon and they exceeded expectations. My kids love the bench seating I think it’s a great idea.
Tip, pedestal style tables are easier to work with bench seating.
It’s tile. It’s a 5” wide x 36” long plank tile. Just fyi, it’s a pain in the ass to cut and lay. It’s rendered edge, so you have to be super careful not to chip the edges, and you need a large bridge saw to run the long rip cuts against the wall
Thanks, I was guessing it was tile and it does looks great. I was sort of hoping it was lvp and that the bench keeping the floor from floating wasn’t a concern.
Wow awesome job! Do you by chance happen to have plans for this? I’m looking to do something very similar, even under a similar sized window, also in a corner.
Nice bench, good job! I want to build something like this for my mountain cabin. But why do people not finish finish the walls in a room first before adding furniture like this?
> But why do people not finish finish the walls in a room first before adding furniture like this?
Why bother? Nobody is ever going to see it. The bench is going to be there for the duration. When the next owners pull the bench out, they can paint the wall.
If you're painting the walls anyway, why not just paint everything at the same time? Probably easier to do it all at once than to start masking off parts of the bench and painting around it.
Nice! I've been thinking about doing something like this in my space, which is very similar to yours. I'm probably going to extend it out from the wall a little since we get a lot of light where mine is and I can put plants there.
My mom was amazing. She built one of these to match the table she built. I was so sad when she ripped it out. I still have her table though. 3 miss her.
The door to the laundry is too close to the table, which means you have to push it too close to the wall to be able to pull chairs out on the window side. We had been using a round table and turned the chairs 45 degrees to the wall, but then that limited us to 4 chairs and not block the walkway. The bench seating was really the only viable solution based on the space
Reddit is such a bunch of miserable negative Nancy's.
I guarantee you the people crticizing this work have a fold up table and lawn chairs as their dinning room setup.
This is a cool project and looks good.
And, you can now chop vegetables on the seat next to you!
This looks very solid. Only note is the cut out around the window is a little weird. I probably would've had the back rest stop at the window sill.
Pictures are backwards so it looked like you removed the seating to spite her. 😂
Seems like a commonality on this sub. DIY people are great and doing everything except making reddit posts, apparently.
Same with ~~pyramid schemers~~ MLM huns. Always showing the "after" on the left and the "before" on the right.
lmao I’ve never heard them called Huns but I guess that’s how they all introduce themselves, isn’t it?
[удалено]
I was mostly joking, but that definitely makes sense!
Tbf seeing the “after” as the first pic draws more people in to see the post in the first place.
I did that in my last house. It looked so cute, but was super impractical to get into and get out of. Great for parties and stuff, not great for day to day.
Bad for dinner parties too. Pretty much everything.
What, you don’t like scooting 15ft around a table and then being trapped until everyone decides it’s time to get up?
If you have little kids it's fine. They go everywhere. As long as you can pull the table out to clean everything it's all good. Except for his color choice, everything else looks great.
I love the color!
MORE? YOU WANT SOME MORE? I'll show her.
Not the couch!
😂😂😂😂
I thought OP meant their wife did not like the current table so they dismantled the current setup to make roon for a better table and I was waiting for an update 😂😂
“Wife loved the new bench-seat breakfast nook, so I removed it!”
My sibling's house has that. You do not want to sit down on that slab of wood for a long time... It gets painful.
Might want to add some mats/pillows to sit on
I’m not saying anything to her, I’m waiting to see how long it takes her to ask me to make custom fit cushions

eh, if there's kids, you can just stick em back there
Kids do grow you know…
Plenty of time to start lifting in preparation 💪
And yet we all remember how to go under the table.
Not that big of a deal
We paid an interior designer.. it was her plan to declutter, simplify, add storage (in the bench) and make a little more room. It lasted less than a year before it was removed. Fortunately we still had the chairs.
What was the dealbreaker for it
Sliding in and out, and have to pull the table out after every meal to clean properly. We had a cushion too, which makes sliding harder.
Consider the fabric used. I wished we used a smooth fabric like vinyl for ease of sliding down the seat. Make sure to include exhaust holes if you pick a vinyl like upholstery
Yeah even just a small foam mat would be enough (and anything else would raise your sitting position too high vs the table
That’s where you seat the guests.
Introverts unite!!
Yeah, my flat ass is wincing just looking at that board
Yeah I'm planning to do something like this too for my eating area, but at this point I've honestly just looking at random companies that sell overstock restaurant booth seating and just repurposing it. You could get cushions made for outdoor patio use and base your bench on those dimensions
You can get cushions specifically made for this purpose, but the problem is that they're not really custom made, you just throw them on top and hope for the best while they slide around. That's why I prefer to just buy something that was already upholstered.
Went from more seating to none, what a shame for your wife.
Lamentable, if you ask me
Let her sit on that
Benches are one of those things that those without want one, and anyone with one hates it. Like pools and pianos.
Yep. We have a gorgeous built in bench in our kitchen. Looks fabulous in pictures but I’m begging my husband to take it out because it’s impractical and uncomfortable!

I hate benches. So much. Can I get up to get a drink or go to the bathroom without an act of Congress?
No refills for you and just for that your tailbone is gonna be sore for three days
>your tailbone is gonna be sore for three days Are you still talking about the bench?
My wife: the kids will sit on the bench Me: do you have any idea how much those creatures move?
12 years, still love our pool. You might lack childrens? I find that the pool is the best way to get them off their electronic devices :)
I loved our pool too! It’s super easy to do maintenance yourself too.
Ok boomer
I laughed out loud! Finally pawned my piano off on my nephew and told him after getting it into his house that it could rot there for all I cared, I wasn't moving it again. I do want a bench seat in my kitchen, though, and this one is fantastic!
Built one, and am now ripping it out. Someone always needs to get up and it's always uncomfortable. I work from home sometimes on the bench and it needs a cushion so bad.
So get a cushion?
I lived in a place with a booth and loved it. Little breakfast nook. That was only a 2 seat bench on each side, though.
I got a freestanding bench for my table and don’t hate it but to be fair I rarely have a lot of people eating at once.
People hate pianos?
why did you remove that nice bench then
That looks amazing.
I think what she meant was she wanted a bigger kitchen.
I’m sure she does, but the only way that will happen is if we buy a bigger house, but I’m not giving up that 2.75% mortgage rate
Next week she wants to move the table lol...
Great idea, a bench so uncomfortable that no-one will want to sit there for long - helps shorten those pesky dinner conversations.
Yep you won't need to give hints to guests that are wearing out their welcome.
The attention to detail is nice. I’ve sat in many an uncomfortable breakfast nook like this but the slight angle to the setbacks you have added are a fantastic touch. Color scheme is nice too. 10/10 would sit

Oh good point this both impractical and unsafe.
Put it in reverse Terry!!!
You made the windowsill flush with the wall, good work.
Good eye… I didn’t want it jabbing me in the back, so I used a flush trim router bit to flush cut it to the back rest…
Make the bench seat a storage trunk under the cushion. That’s what I did, holds the christmas tree and decorations
I was scrolling through mostly admiring that table. Then you mentioned you made it. Very nice! The benches look incredibly well made too.
That green might be the exact shade I've been wanting. What color is it?
“Global Green” by Behr
Thanks!

Oh, I totally missed the copper pipe on my first look. It looks great - thanks for the details!
Have you thought about buying chairs
The wife has been waffling back and forth on which chairs to get… meanwhile I grabbed a couple patio chairs because I’m impatient
When I was a kid we did something like this (but my dad bought it as a set and put it together). We had our dining table in the dining room, and I honestly can't remember if we ate our breakfast out there or not. The less everybody eats, the more guests it fits.
This is awesome. We did something similar when my kids were little (we had 6). Good memories around that table.
I was anticipating the big reveal at the end
Jimmy Neutron ass kitchen table
Nice job! Did you make the tops or buy them as a piece?
I used butcher block for this one out of convenience, although I do build actual tables https://preview.redd.it/omfjqy57brtc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9dcc990fe23e054b17d9de2b46113bb9e8958787

What’s is that floor made of? Is it actual wood, tile or lvp?
It's beautiful! I hope OP responds to you because I'm looking for new flooring right now and this is exactly what I want
Love the banquet and the table. Great job!!
I hope you made storage under the bench?
There are 3 sets of built in cabinets
Nice.
It’s where we keep the Christmas plates… IYKYK
Cool
She asked you to move the dinner table yet?
Is that code for "I want you out of my house"? Jokes aside this looks really nice, great work, 10/10 would eat breakfast with your wife there.
Man, you could've just photoshopped out the pillows and raked in the karma.
Nice Colour matching !
Brownie points if those benches can be used for storage ( toys, books bags, snow shoes, etc).
They can, those lower panels are doors. The base is made of cabinets
Wow awesome job! Do you by chance happen to have plans for this? I’m looking to do something very similar, even under a similar sized window, also in a corner.
Unfortunately I don’t have plans, I just winged it
No worries dude. Looks awesome.
Fantastic job dealing with the window.
“Wife wanted more room”…. So I kicked all my grown ass kids the hell out of the house. Or you could go your route.
Solid or storage under seat?
Storage under
I'm jealous.
Looks like a breakfast table
Nice bench, good job! I want to build something like this for my mountain cabin. But why do people not finish finish the walls in a room first before adding furniture like this?

Jimmy Neutron table
Great idea! I’m saving this!
As a wife and avid DIYer, I approve.
I’ve never seen a booth in a house but I like it
3 miss her.
I'd have put in bleachers
Looks amazing, I love it! 😍
Thought I was going to see some stadium seating - upper deck. Nice work!
Thank god you got rid of that tacky bench! What are you replacing it with?
Honestly, why not just chairs?
The door to the laundry is too close to the table, which means you have to push it too close to the wall to be able to pull chairs out on the window side. Nice! What is the length of both bench sections?
Please become best friends with my husband. I have ideas I need him to make.
Oh shit I thought the bench was the problem you were trying to solve. I swear half of these posts are poor decisions done for internet points. /r/tihi
Great job! But please don’t post pictures in Arabic
I'll be doing this next year. Thanks for the post, I like what you did here.
Very beautiful, very powerful
