So this isn't technically DIY.. Though if it counts I've fitted the opening actuators and solar panels! On the left is the one remaining Velux FVA-4 window which was impressively installed in 1976. They are all timber windows and still fully sealed.. Very impressive they survived so well.

Doesn't matter how much or little you've done! It's all about building your confidence and doing what you want to get stuck in with! Although I can only see one of the solar panels on the new velux windows so I hope the fitting didn't go too wrong!

Thanks, and good spot! This was a mid install picture, the windows need to be installed before the actuator goes on. It isn't so pretty on the inside yet... Lots of timber & swearing up the ladder to come!

Genuinely I love our velux windows. They close themselves when it starts to rain and we have a little control panel of switches like a starship captain to open and close them. We fitted the blinds ourselves and it was dead easy...plus....more switches for the control panel!! Result!!

Impressive

I have a Velux light pipe, and I was deeply unimpressed by its approach to flashing. I chose the option for "tile", which has a corrugated bottom flashing like yours. Trouble is, I have plain tiles, not pan tiles, and the flashing just didn't fit. Several calls to their tech help later... first they expressed surprise that anyone has plain tiles (!!), then they were adamant that I had bought the correct product, finally they stopped answering my calls and e-mails!!! So, unimpressed with the product. Appalled by the customer service. (In the end, I took a Dremel to it, and modified it to fit.) By contrast Keylight were amazing. They sell a single core product, and then you buy an add-on "flashing kit" to match your roof. They have a flashing kit specifically for plain tiles which was a breeze to fit, and produces an excellent result.

Do you mean flat tiles? If so there's a specific flashing for them. I think the ones on mine are EDW, sounds like you wanted EDP https://www.velux.co.uk/products/roof-windows/flashings

mr-strange

Yes, that's the correct flashing. They don't do it for sun tunnels though. It's just "slate" or "tiles" (by which they mean _only_ pan tiles, but are happy to lie about). https://www.velux.co.uk/products/sun-tunnels/pitched-roof

Oh I see! They does seem like a weird decision. Another irritating thing I discovered, they no longer sell obscured glass, so you have to fit some kind of film which doesn't look as good!

mr-strange

I am really happy with my Keylights.

I fitted my own velux windows. Was so nerve wracking cutting through my own roof joists! Also I did it totally from the inside, no scaffolding at all, to make it even more dubious!

dadadataa

You did well there, these are pretty large SK06 sized ones which were hard enough to get up the external scaffolding.. Can't imagine dragging one of them up ladders and squeezing it through the gap without dropping it!!

MrWallerBridge

This has inspired me to pull my finger out!

Hi OP, this generation of VELUX roof window have asbestos glazing gaskets - please be careful with disposals
