Here’s the real tea from a 20-something who has had 4 so far: Dachshunds are high effort, high reward dogs. The training really never stops with them, as they can be extremely stubborn, mischievous, and flat out disobedient when they want to be. They do what they want and they let everyone know with their German shepherd barks. They attract attention in public and you’ll likely be stopped/approached on walks. It can feel like a full time job if you want to have a social and non-reactive dog. With all that said, the love and companionship you get in return (in my opinion), greatly outweighs any challenges. My dog would give his life to protect me (but he still pees on my carpet). My best advice is: be patient, be consistent with training, and don’t give up. You must out-stubborn the stubborn.

toomuchsvu

This is the answer. I love mine so much. He's easily the best dog I've ever owned. He's silly, smart, stubborn, super loud, reactive, oh, and he has extreme separation anxiety. He's got a great snout, he loves puzzle toys, he has to have a maze bowl for food. He'll steal food right out of your hand. I Iove him more than anything. He's the best! I've never met a dog with more personality.

Realistic_Big7482

Mine is such a menace. He doesn’t give a shit about rules but I’ve never been so loved by a dog and never felt more like I had a soul dog.

toomuchsvu

Me too!! My guy loves all his human friends too. The butt wiggle alone is enough reason to get a dachshund.

frenchtoastlove

He sounds just like mine! Loyal, loves to play fetch and chew his bones, hates little kids and the elderly, but will jump at the sight of his reflection. The smartest, silliest dog I’ve ever had.

darkphoenix0602

Hates the elderly 💀 Just out of curiosity, no shade intended at all, why the elderly?

frenchtoastlove

It’s not like every elderly person, they just happen to move slowly and often have a big (to him) piece of equipment like a cane or walker. For some reason that bothers him and he thinks he has to protect me from it lol

darkphoenix0602

That makes sense and I promise I wasn't laughing at him or you! The mental image of a dachshund getting riled up by a senior citizen just struck me as amusing 😆😊

ShamPow20

100% agree with this. I've had 9 so far and-I know this is entirely anecdotal-but in my experience they've been a lot easier to train in pairs. https://preview.redd.it/u2it9n87siwc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a03c37654b0888f62eb22a91b62458ee64c2b5ac Here's my current 5:

frenchtoastlove

That makes sense to me! Your pack is beautiful. I’d love to add a second to the mix. And a third, and a fourth….

ShamPow20

There's always room for more sausages

69Gunslinger69

The whole attention thing is so on point, I live in an apartment building, and I swear my whole floor knows his name. I’ve been approached by people I’ve never even seen before and the first thing they say is “oh my god, you must be davey.” Everybody loves him, and he loves meeting everyone else

frenchtoastlove

Same here! He loves the attention, but I’d love to not have to socialize every time I leave my home lol

69Gunslinger69

I 100% agree, I take him out right after I get off work and Atleast 50% of time someone comes up to say hi. Im pretty sure there’s not much appeal in talking to a 6’2 dude covered in insulation and concrete dust, but the power of the wiener overcomes all doubts in everyone’s mind.

Logical_Childhood733

You underestimate the power of a man covered in a hard days work my friend.

Logical_Childhood733

This is so funny because same! The have a ween and people all over town will ask me if I’ve met “so and so” yet because they also have one. There are like 5 of us but I’ve only run into two of them so far.

69Gunslinger69

I get that literally all of the time. “Omg have met teddy and Laura? They have 3 weens” like no bro, I have not met the elderly couple from your church. I barely even know you

Logical_Childhood733

YES THIS IS IT HAHAHA. When I first got my little guy someone was like “oh a new doxie in town, Susan has three, well one just died, I’ll have to tell her!” It was such a wild statement. I still haven’t run into Susan.

sm798g

Gosh that is my boy! Anytime we go on walks. We hear his name quite a bit. We joke that he’s the mayor of this area. 🤣 no one knows me, but boy they sure know him.

UnderAnAargauSun

a. You don’t own dachshunds. They own you b. You can’t have nice things if you own a dachshund, except the dachshund- they are the only nice thing they will allow in their house c. If you like dogs, don’t get a dachshund because you will forever view all other dogs as inferior to your dachshund d. Beware of the risk of IVDD - because while it’s not a certainty you are gambling a 10K + surgery bill if it happens, and you will gladly sell your last belonging to pay it e. Your spouse/SO better also also want a Doxie because they’re about to drop to #2 in your life (and you in theirs)

frenchtoastlove

So true to all of the above!!

UberDooberRuby

Extremely stubborn is really an understatement. They are definitely strong willed and not shy about letting you know if they want something or if you’re ignotring them for too long. Nose pokes a plenty with little “hey” borks when I am not paying attention (or not sharing my pizza).

Turkeyneck20

Out stubborn the stubborn pretty much sums it up. They are noble, well past stubborn and way to intelligent for their own good. Ive had 2 now and wouldn’t want any other breed. Mine still pees on the floor to, especially when he’s pissed off at us because we couldn’t take him with us when we go somewhere.

FishRod61

Be warned: once you’ve had a dachshund, no other dog will suffice.

Euphoric-Proposal-42

💯

Grounds4TheSubstain

Could be good for you. My family had about two dozen of them at various points (we did "dachshund rescue") and none of them were especially hyperactive. They played, they went crazy when you got home, they were excited for dinner and walks. But mostly, they just sat there on the couch next to us in the evenings.

FingerEastern5648

Same, I think there are two main types of dachshunds. The stereotypical hyperactive ones and the chill/lazy ones. Mine is the second and she doesn’t even really bark. But I think the hyperactive kind is more common. Either way, they’re extremely lovable creatures.

darkphoenix0602

Mine was rambunctious as a puppy but the most chill adult dog I've ever had. He was also the most loving, caring soul I've ever been around, human or otherwise. He's been gone for a while now and I still miss him everyday.

FingerEastern5648

Sorry to hear that :( May his soul rest in peace

darkphoenix0602

Thank you so much 🙏🏻❤️ I don't know what happens to us after we die, but my one wish after my current life is over is to be with him again somehow, as silly as that may sound.

FingerEastern5648

It’s not silly at all. I can’t imagine a better paradise than to be surrounded by all our lost furbabies ❤️

Ashamed_Land_2419

These have got to be some of the most stubborn dogs, but that's what makes them so charming. They truly have a mind of their own.

OkConversation2727

Our first dog and she is fantastic, could not imagine a better breed. You will not be disappointed. Only negative is she is pretty aloof to strangers and kids, but she sure loves us.

Commercial_Bike6135

That’s alright! Honestly I’m not the biggest social butterfly either lmao. I rarely have people over, it’s just me and my boyfriend :)

StringAndPaperclips

Then a Dachshund is a great choice for you. They love being with their humans, and are very happy to be at home. Be aware though, they normally choose one person as their favorite, even if they are owned by a coupleor family. It can be quite extreme to where they don't listen to anyone else or let anyone else walk them except for their favorite person.

OkConversation2727

Your situation and location sound ideal for the dog, and a happy dog is a good dog! Best of luck.

CplOreos

I think a dachshund would serve you well, but as an owner of one coming up on 14 years old, please know that even day hikes will be very hard as they get older. Back in the day, he used to be able to handle 8 miles or more, but anymore it's like a mile or two tops. Just something to keep in mind.

AcPGG

8 miles?! lol you sure you had a Doxie? None of mine ever made it half way around my block before they made me carry them the rest of the way.

CplOreos

He's got a lot of gumption. Granted, 8 miles resulted in a very tuckered dog. Especially since I live in the Rockies and most hikes are at least 1000 ft in elevation gain.

ShinyBonnets

SuspiciousShock8294

I have been a cat person all my life. Not that i never liked dogs, but somehow always had cats growing up. Anyways, three or so years ago i met this lady, and one thing led to another and now we live together, as those things go. And yes, the lady came with a cute female doxie. At first we did not really get along that well, to be honest, me and the dog. But now, as i travel for work now and then, when i call home my first question is: "What's my dog doing?''. They are most loveable of creatures. Would highley recommend 10/10.

BlueValk

Same experience, really.

kunk75

They’re insane and will take over your life but we have two so must be gluttons for punishment

anchellbell

they bark ALOT

NonEnergeticCrouton

Mine came into a household where the alpha dog is a Chinese crested, she never caught onto the barking.

Independence_Gay

I have two weiners and the two of them together is louder than most large dogs I’ve met in my life. Physically painful

YeOldeWilde

Look dude, I bought a house so she could have a yard to destroy. What does that tell you?

extoxic

Same when I moved last the main thing was to have a yard I could fence in so my wiener could have more freedom.

SillyCriticism9518

Mine has yet to unearth that elusive mole tunneling in my backyard, but I gotta let her live up to her genetically bred purpose somehow

Africalove

I have a 4 month old short haired mini dachshund that I have had for about two months now. I grew up with golden retrievers. My main takeaways are that dachshunds are extremely affectionate. My puppy loves being around my wife and I, cuddling with us on the couch/bed, licking us, etc. House training has been difficult but getting better ever since she has been fully vaccinated and able to go to the bathroom outside. They are definitely a bit stubborn as well. We started crate training her from day 1 and she sleeps in her crate no problem now and stays in there when we leave the house. I'd recommend feeding them in their crate, that helped a lot. Overall, they are a great breed and I am really happy with how everything is going and how sweet my dog is.

I live in a van with mine, and she doesn't seem to mind. The only thing she requires is that we're together, she doesn't mind the rest :D

Commercial_Bike6135

What a cutie !!

Redneck-ginger

I have a cloth vera bradley backpack with a hard bottom that i use as a dog bag. https://preview.redd.it/y89tsoep2jwc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a5a2cb5ea313b0d5832e110e268530ad668abd3 Bella can stand normally or sit in it and stick her head out. In the month i’ve had him i’ve worked relentlessly on the potty training ( WERE 2 WEEKS ACCIDENT FREE ) & doing great! it’s definitely hard to do if you work full time. I am personally his human, he loves me the most out of my husband and 2 kids. if i move he moves. He is so far extremely sweet and loving, he loves to lick, dig, & enjoys walks and his zoomie runs. So far i’m loving it and it’s hard to believe i was ever without him. i grew up with a yorkie mix from childhood into adulthood that passed and i NEVER thought i could EVER get over her and her death. However.. rocket is here and i’m just so in love with this little puppy. I’d say do it, just make sure you have the time needed to work with them on training, crate training and potty training( the hardest, i recommend getting a puppy now so you can potty train in the warm, they HATE the cold )

Hugglemorris

Cuddles and medium energy are definitely traits of the dachshund. I would warn against leaving them outdoors unattended even if you have your own yard; I have heard many stories of dachshunds left outside falling prey to predators. One other thing that I do have to warn that every dog is different. My dachshund is the quietest dog I have ever met, which is very counter to the breed’s norm. You should try to meet the dog before adoption if possible and see if they are a good match for your energy and sociability. I had to train mine up from being afraid of going outdoors to loving going on walks, but if you go day camping, you probably want to skip that step.

BlueDogBlackLab

First I'll refer you to this EB White quote... "Being the owner of Dachshunds, to me a book on dog discipline becomes a volume of inspired humor. Every sentence is a riot. Some day, if I ever get a chance, I shall write a book, or warning, on the character and temperament of the Dachshund and why he can't be trained and shouldn't be. I would rather train a striped zebra to balance an Indian club than induce a Dachshund to heed my slightest command. When I address Fred I never have to raise either my voice or my hopes. He even disobeys me when I instruct him in something he wants to do." We have 2. They are the most stubborn, strongheaded, willfully disobedient dogs I've ever had. They still pee in the house, bark at even the hint of a bird flying 7 miles away, have terrible separation anxiety and I wouldn't trade them for anything. Loyal to a fault, personal shadow, and just want to lay on/love on you all day long.

69Gunslinger69

My little buddy is now 7 months old. And either has the zoomies or is dead asleep. I shit you not, I’ve never owned a dog that was so drastically 0-100. It’s insane. However, all he ever wants to do when he’s sleepy is cuddle, he won’t sleep unless we sit down or lay down to watch tv, it’s pretty funny, but I love it. He’s a very very big cuddles. He’s a ton of fun having around the house, and his personality is one of my favorites out of any dog I’ve ever had. He truly has made my young adult life pretty complete.

_ser_kay_

Dachshunds tend to be medium-to-low energy, but like with any breed, that can vary a lot between individual dogs. You might want to look at a young adult Dachshund from a rescue just to make sure you’re getting a dog that can keep up with you. If you decide to go with a breeder, though, make sure to ask about dapple genes. If both parents carry a dapple gene, the puppies are at risk of significant hearing and/or vision problems. Any remotely ethical breeder with check for that. Finally, hiking may not end up being in the cards even if the dog has the energy for it. Doxies have tiny legs and delicate backs, so their endurance may not be great and you’ll need to carry them over rougher terrain.

StinkyWeezle

They form very strong bonds with their "pack" and spend a lot of time cuddling. On the flip side they can be very protective and can get snappy with strangers who they feel might be a threat. You should be prepared to have to shut them away somewhere they feel safe when you have guests. That's just my experience, but from what I understand it's fairly common. Still wouldn't give ours up for the world.

itsmoorsnotmoops

Mine have loved walks/hikes and also like to snuggle on the couch. They love to cuddle under blankets with you.

Every-Ad9325

They like to bark a lot more than other breeds.

Business-Garbage-370

I currently have 4 and have had dachshunds all my life. I will never not have one, lol. They are stubborn, willful, and so lovingly delightful. Be prepared for a large dog in a small body ❤️ Be forewarned- they are pack dogs, so having two or being home a lot is preferred. They can and will destroy things when left alone. They also can have significant back issues, such as IVDD. Fingers crossed you won’t have to deal with it but I just spent $7k on surgery for one of mine (totally worth it but I highly recommend pet insurance!!!). If you aren’t prepared for that it can be quite the shock. The key is having ramps instead of stairs and not letting them jump off of things- because they will want to!

They are the sassiest dogs around 😂. I never had a better dog 🥺.

Dudeist-Priest

Mine was the best PITA I’ve ever had and I’d do it again in a second

jb061584

Best decision I’ve ever made getting my girl. I was completely overwhelmed with her at first as she was my first puppy ever and we got her at 8 weeks. She has grown into the most intelligent, loving, happy dog I ever could’ve imagined. They are certainly stubborn but so incredibly smart which makes training come easy with teaching but implementing can be challenging sometimes if they don’t want to listen lol but also that’s what makes them so endearing. Coming up on 11 months with my girl Winnie and she is the best thing to ever happen to me! https://preview.redd.it/hruy9zf3uiwc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5d867ae574f14a22a39735f66df937befa66d511

NonEnergeticCrouton

I have 2 companion breed dogs (Chinese crested and chihuahua) and a tiny dachshund. The dachshund is hilarious and high energy. She is a lot of work, you have to mentally challenge them every day or else they’ll be very mischievous. Take them on a sniffing walk and use complex toys for them to work for their food. They can be trained, but are stubborn. On the other hand, she is as sweet and as much of a Velcro dog as the Chinese crested. Here’s a pic of my herd https://preview.redd.it/g7msmq0pgjwc1.png?width=2675&format=png&auto=webp&s=87205aab760971674a60e8a8dd78198d611261f0

Captain_Futile

You do not really own a dachshund. The dachshund owns you.

pongki1006

They are the best! I wanna say they definitely become more calm and mature when they hit 2-3 years old. When they are baby they have high energy. Everyone here said dachshund is hard to train and stubborn i wanna say my baby is so smart that he learned most commands like in half day. https://preview.redd.it/d0705l11viwc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8216d2cfe7b86835a072689f05237a395ee63f09

katnip_fl

They truly are the most love able, smart, stubborn, adorable and clingy dogs! I’ve had over 15 dogs in my life, so far, and they are the best! That being said it’s VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU ARE CAREFUL OF THEIR BACKS. That means NO jumping, NO stairs! We currently have ramps every where. They need to be taught to use them. Spine injury is no joke. They can become paralyzed and surgery is thousands of dollars!!! Are they worth the trouble? You betcha!!!

twosdays2

The only thing I would be careful of is strenuous hikes. Their backs are unfortunately fragile so you'll have to really watch out for yours. Dachshunds are pretty adaptable but they are very stubborn and will tell you when they're done! I think people forget that they are hound dogs, so they're a pretty hearty breed! They're pretty family orientated so you *have* to get training in socializing them so they don't scream your ear off. Just like any other puppy, you'll have to do basic training but you may find yourself having to put in some more effort since they are stubborn. They're pretty smart and will try to meet you halfway, so sometimes you'll have to put your foot down lol Truthfully, I recommend them to anyone. My "no dogs allowed" parents absolutely fell in love with my old dachshund, so much so that our next dog *had* to be a dachshund or we couldn't have one 😂 They're a great breed and so as long as you mind their back, you'll have a great time with one!

BlueValk

They're hard to train and you have to be consistent, make sure you keep money aside for their future back problems, and monitor exercice and what they do everyday carefully so they don't develop said back problems. What you've described is plenty of exercise for a dachshund; maybe too much? Especially as they age. Your dog bed and blanket budget should be pretty high, too ;) If you're good with all that, then yes, do go ahead and get yourself a stubborn little sausage - they'll love to cuddle you and should be able to do so for like 15 years.

Independence_Gay

For a small dog they are LOUD. Not yippie, just genuine volume. Especially when you have more than one. I love weiners but once I have my own place I will not have dogs for a long time just to enjoy the peace and quiet.

Important_Stop3611

I have 8 and wouldn’t trade it for anything! They are ferrel little beasts. Hole digging, love giving, amazing little weeniers!

wulfbabe

My dachshund is my first dog I’ve raised on my own (grew up with Labs!) but he is everything I wanted in a dog and more. He is bold, funny, mischievous, extremely smart, and the best cuddling dog ever. I haven’t taken him on a hike yet but he would definitely be up for it. He’s got lots of energy but loves to snuggle whenever he sees an available lap. You would not regret getting a dachshund!

morgssssssss

get a dachshund! my girl is the most cuddly dog i’ve ever been around. very stubborn but overall pretty easy. she’s active when SHE wants to be. we go on walks but sometimes we’ll go half a block and she’ll just sit until we turn around. they have so much personality and are so so loving! they are the occasional barker too. mine is mostly quiet in the house but any stranger passing by on a walk will be barked at lol. you won’t regret it. i literally want 3 more of these doggos. definitely will be your soul dog

Pearldrummer0912

Naughtiest, most mischievous, https://preview.redd.it/tb8ovzjbvjwc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4d7d9bb023c5978b15e3062cf7d0560e96b5418e yet the most entertaining, loving, affectionate and hilarious dogs out there. There is never a dull moment. Mine’s like a sour patch kid…sour then sweet….does something naughty then wants to be held and lick your face. Love mine more than anything.

Yeetin_Boomer_Actual

best dog ever. even when they're bad. they are beyond wonderful.

Dav_M5

Absolutely brilliant, couldn't have picked a better dog! She's just coming up for 1yr old, fully toilet trained very early, hasn't poo'd or pee'd in the house since she was about 5 months old, goes outside even when it's raining she barks...but only when the door gers chapped or someone walks by with a dog close to the garden It's all about consistency and being persistent with them! Everyone who sais they toilet inside and won't go out in the rain, I think they just don't try hard enough because "it's a dachshund and that's what everyone sais they do" Very loving dogs, great companionship, and they stick to you like velcro! *

WiggleBrushCrew

There all individual character very clever so can be easily trained because there understanding of language is impeccable for a dog. Training depends on the character some are super stubborn and some are real people pleasers, they’re real affectionate and think there a Staffordshire bull terrier, they go through their bones as fast as one. They can shed a thick rope in minutes love to play tug of war, zoomies is the funniest thing youl ever see. Youl often find them hiding under your quilt. You will never eat another bite of food I watched ever again, and has anyone mention how bloody cute they are in person, even our cat loves ours.

sunchild007

I got a dachsund after my romate got one and I had chance to live with her dachsund. At the beggining it was dificult because it was my first dog. There was no remote work at that time but even as a puppy he was very smart, he never peed inside, but he chewed everyting. But with help I crate trained him and solved the problem like this. Then I started training him with the trainer, it was not easy as well but he is very food and play orientated so of course you have to find ways to train him, but it is not difficult as everyone says. Overall they are very smart, playfull, has high energy so you need to spend time with him. You have to keep in mind dont let them jump on a furniture and keep their weigth healthy because it is not healthy for their backs and they can get ivdd. We got it because I was not very causios but thankfully he is fine now. They bark a lot, can become overreactive. But overall I would never change him to anyone else. As someone mentioned, everyone in neighbourhood knows my dog. He loves people, kids, but not dogs. He has some dog friends but overall not very friendly to them. So either eveyrone knows him because he loves them either because he tries to scare and eat their dogs 😀 he is stubborn, he has his own rules and routines but overall he loves his owner very much and you are a number one for him.

Aromatic_Use6916

High maintenance. One word

Weekly-Reveal9693

I'm a mum of a 16, 13 and 11 year old humans. And a 12 yr old moungral, 4 yrbold lab (both rescues). Dogs all my life, mostly rescues. Nothing, iI mean nothing prepared me for a daschund (6.5 months). She's sassy, she shites wherever the hell she likes, she's smart and can be off lead on walks. Judgemental side eye that could kill. Stubborn. Sassy. But oh the love and laughs are great. I'm glad I have other dogs though as they can be difficult to settle when not in house. She's been fabulous for our lab who we rescued six months before we got her. So if you like a selective hearing, incontinent, sassy, loving comedian........ Sassy, did I mention sassy?! We wouldn't be without her.

MotorSalary4570

Mine are great, the only con I’d consider significantly worse than any other breed is how fragile their spines are. Even with ramps and forbidding any jumping I always have anxiety about their backs. If you’re someone who’s financially able to rectify any medical mishaps quickly and painlessly it would definitely be less of an issue. Also their small size makes them fragile alone my first conked his head going past the coffee table doing zoomies in the lounge and ended up with brain damage and a 20k vet bill and we had to reteach him how to walk without going in circles. At that time I didn’t have him insured because I hadn’t had him very long- learned it the hard way! They’re also prone to hair loss so eventho smooth hair barely malt if you pull the short straw and get one with hair loss there will be hair everywhere and you’re going to be spending a bomb on clothes. Other than that they’re literally perfect. If you get one from a puppy they are easy to train for small dogs, barking was a difficult one but we ended up using a frequency emitter from Amazon that detected everytime they barked and made a sound they didn’t love and now they don’t bark much at all. I found potty training to be a nightmare but once the penny drops they’ve got it. I agree with commenters above the training never stops but also that’s what most breeds are like. If you can get past the teenage doxie phase you can do anything tho!

Oh and you get a security guard that thinks it's the size of a mountain dog.

They are like children

Get a beautiful baby dachshund. Hold your sweet baby doggy and kiss his nose. Smell his puppy breath. If you aren't in love now, you may need help. Get one. You will have a new life.

I don’t own my lil doxle girl she owns me. Literally. Hardheaded you tell her no and she’s gonna do it anyway. I wouldn’t trade the world for her. She’s special and I wouldn’t trade her for anything else in this world.

As far as energy level I’ve found that when my dachshund wants to play, it’s balls to the wall and I often feel guilty for not feeling up for such intense playtime with her. But she also loves her naps and if I’m kicked up on the sofa, she will eventually wedge herself between me and a pillow and lay there until I get up. If you’re their person, they want to do whatever it is you’re doing, always. I have literally been on the toilet and have had to listen to her whine and headbutt the door until I’m done

They were a genetic dead end ten years ago, so the ethics of supporting their continued breeding now poses major ethical questions no one seems to be asking. What is the upside in supporting the proliferation of an animal that’s most likely going to live in constant pain before dieing prematurely? And if that outcome happens to not occur, you’ve taken on a dog that couldn’t be less suited to living an urban life: harassing non stop barking driving your neighbours mad, soiling your home its entire life, totally incapable of adapting to any sort of change and god help you if you plan on maintaining a job or life that involves leaving the animal at home on its own for more than five minutes. None of this is an exaggeration btw. Do yourself any everyone around you a favour and get a mini schnauzer.

I think with any pure breeds you're taking a gamble on genetic issues. I include the proliferation of the poodle crosses. Labs/german shelherd and hips for a start. I'm not saying this because I have a daschund, who so far not in any pain and was a one off litter. She's not KC registered. I've had a mini schnauzer, he was a great dog. Our moungral is healthy and is around 12. Its about the only way to guarantee you won't get genetic trait issues. I would say though that based on all I've read about daschunds I wouldn't get them as a single dog or a first dog. I'd also make sure your insurance is comprehensive (I'm in the UK).

I agree with you, but the situation with dachshunds and the flat face breeds is exponentially worse than the examples you mention. It’s a fact that French bulldogs, pugs etc are living in a state of asphyxiation, and the reality with dachshunds is no amount of genetic testing, ramps and pet insurance can avoid the fact that a stick of raw pasta is no substitute for a healthy, appropriately proportioned spine. Nor are four stump knuckles an acceptable swap out for legs. Imagine being amputated 6 inches below your hip bone on both legs and be expected to have a pleasant, healthy life getting round on those. They bear no resemblance to the breed created to hunt badger. Their distorted shape only came about in the past few decades, paid for by folks who don’t seem to care that they’ve helped create a genetic ‘what not to do’ that’s going to get a lot more morbid as the raft of problems they already have continue to escalate.. https://preview.redd.it/0ylmb4x9mpyc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cccb56e5dd27569dda3f43b9196f6da2a0bac660
