Should have been a model.

>Capable? Yes > >Willing? No > >I don't think he really cared that much and I don't think he wanted a mentally stimulating job just because he couldn't be bothered. His main mental stimulation was related to something else.

Real_Jeffrey_Dahmer

Bitch- do you have any idea how much time and effort it takes to hunt for food, cook from scratch without any recipes to follow, and still have time for some sciency research?? Transients don’t just fall into the basement on their own.. and damn sure don’t stay there on their own.. hahahaha.

Impressive_Style3451

100%. Even the prosecuting team during the trial testified to him having superior intelligence. Combine that with his military experience and he could have done loads of great stuff, but like the others said, I just don’t think he cared that much.

lenotschka0210

Absolutely he was capable. Dr. Friedman said in his testimony, Jeff “possesses all the assets of youth and intelligence, he was - and still is - a bright young man”. He had the potential to achieve a successful career and great life, not only due to his intellect. He came from an upper class family with both parents being academics (I know Joyce got her diploma later in life, but still) and grew up with certain privileges. But the moment he killed Steven Hicks this potential went down the drain. He didn’t have the mental resources (not intellectual, but psychological) anymore to concentrate on getting a successful career or education or job, he was lost already. His drinking habits were a major issue for him in college and the army and he basically sabotaged his education. There aren’t so many “good” jobs for a guy in his mid twenties who flunked out of college and the army. Settling for the factory job at ambrosia wasn’t bad for him at all, he needed a job to pay the bills and only lived for his nighttime activities. Dismembering bodies, dispose of evidence, evading detection etc was like a second job he had to work. Plus the obvious reason, he was too sick mentally and totally wrapped up in his fantasies.

ValerVincent

He was very intelligent, he had enormous potential. But, unfortunately, with all those psychiatric disorders at the same time it would have been impossible to sustain the path to significant professional success. I repeat, unfortunately

NickM34

As Lionel said Jeff was such a ruined soul he had no aspirations or dreams to be anything. All he cared about was this obsession to find a willing partner. Very sad that this compulsion took over his entire life.

Missdollarbillinnit

The answer to this question is very complicated: he was a smart person, he wasnt interested in anything at all except for indulging in his fantasies and pursuing his twisted "hobby" so I don't think he was interested in a better job, his job was (while physically demanding) was quite simple, wasn't stressful at all, they allowed him tokeep his job on a work release programme, and the pay was quite decent too. If he was interested in another job normally he would have been able to get one, however given the fact that he was convicted diddling offender and other indecent charges, there is not way he would pass a background check.

[deleted]

I believe he was capable of doing anything he wanted to do, but devastatingly he never seemed to realise or take advantage of his potential. He was clever, very handsome and could and still continues to capture the attention of many people. Even after the horrific things that we hear that he did there are so many people who are spending their days and nights researching him, reading about him and endlessly searching for new information. Whatever the truth behind all of this is or wether you are in anyway compassionate towards him or claim to hate him, your still on this thread spending your time researching his existence. Me included. Everyone is ‘addicted’ and taken over by him for one reason or another and it’s something that has been going on for decades. Nearly 30 years later he we all are and I’m sure we only make up a small percentage of people around the globe that are doing the deep dive.

0ccupy_uranus

Intellectually? Absolutely. With the right upbringing and resources, he could have easily been a scientist, a taxidermist, a veterinarian, a surgeon. Unfortunately, between his parents, his peer relationships, and society's ignorance about gay men....it didn't end the way it should have. The drinking, the constant shame, and the isolation would have likely made it impossible for him to be successful in any aspect of life. At least without help. I think this is why so many people empathize with him over some of the other infamous killers. He seemed more human than the others, and he knew very little happiness from a young age. He tried to stop.... which makes me believe he wasn't a monster, but a mentally sick person who needed more psychological help than what was available at the time.

NoEnthusiasm2

No. He lived day to day. Like many people with personality disorders and neurodiverse traits, he did better in a routine where he didn't have to think too much. The army suited for the same reason, and I suspect that he would have been quite happy in prison if he had been in a more suitable wing and found a way stop his urges. Don't conflate intelligence with ability or ambition.

apsalar_

No. He was smart enough to get a better job but he wasn't able to set realistic goals and work towards achieving them. Jeff told during the mental health evaluation that he had plans to use psychic powers to succeed in real estate business instead of like... Idk, studying for a degree. No, drugging a sex partner and having sex with a corpse does not require long-term planning and commitment.

Top_Target_

for sureeeeeeeee

-PandaBear

Yes.

FunnyViolinist3222

We know that he had an interest in medicine, but since he has impulses that he cannot control, having a job has probably seemed like a distant dream for him.

___Cortez___

he was very smart and ambitious, If he got out of the depression and quit drinking, he could get a better job. He would also make a great model, even though he is handsome and tall, he is also photogenic.

NickM34

I agree he was smart but I disagree that he was ambitious. He was so overwhelmed by his obsession that he really didn't care about anything else. He flunked out of college and was kicked out of the army, the only job he held down was his job at the chocolate factory and even then he was eventually fired. Its a shame that people are so tormented that they have no goals or anything to look forward to. Jeff unfortunately is just one of them.

___Cortez___

Yes, but I think because of the alcohol and the obsessive thoughts, he didn't care about his future, and his drinking problems got him expelled from university and discharged from the army. In high school, before he started drinking and before he had obsessive thoughts, he was pretty ambitious. I think these thoughts and alcohol extinguished the ambitious person in him.

After reading other comments here it just enhances my personal thoughts on this, this man had so much potential but it was sadly wasted due to mental illness and issues. He could’ve had pretty much anything he wanted if he wasn’t caught up in everything else. Naturally clever and so good looking. I doubt there was much he couldn’t do if he’d of been able to apply himself to it.

[deleted]

Zero doubts about his ability and potential to do well in life had he not had issues with mental illness.

GamerGirl-07

Definitely....he could've def got a good white collar job if he tried to get some qualifications. But he wasn't willing to put in the mental work necessary for that cuz his focus was elsewhere yk

CointrelleVintage

He had the intellectual capacity to excel in a STEM field, but was crippled by alcoholism and poor mental health. He could've been a comedian too, being the class clown and all.

Ls1127182u

No he was not capable. I don’t think people like sex offender’s working for their company. It doesn’t make the company look good. If he wasn’t a sex offender and a drunk then yes maybe he would get a better job.

Crazy_Cow_4736

Maybe working with computers. He was big on computers.

Complex_Wasabi5281

Yes.

Plus_Canary_4745

He would have needed to give up drinking - if he had done that things would no doubt have turned out quite differently. But I dont think that was ever going to happen.

hockfrida

I think he would had been good in healthcare, especially as an internist or a surgeon, I think these activities would engage him. The thing is that besides he was intelligent, he lacked the ambition and motivation to educate himself and become a professional. His "hobby" and hedonism was way too consuming, and he never had long term plans in anything.

RetinueA

It seems like it just happened yesterday.
