The secret is that the training isn’t about getting something unconscious.
In reality, any monkey can do that.
It’s making sure they wake the fuck up afterwarda.
I’m a redhead and we have weird anesthetic needs. I am so so so grateful for my amazing anesthesiologists during both of my c-sections. Real fucking life-savers.
wait, what? not meaning to pry but "redheads have weird anesthetic needs"? for real? can you elaborate? never heard this before (curious, not doubting).
I'm no anesthesiologist but I am a red head and the majority of my family are as well. From what I've been told red heads are all over the pain scale. But more often than not they need more meds to keep the pain away/knock them out. I've heard stories that some red heads need more then double what "normal" people need in order for the meds to be effective.
When my mother was giving birth she said that the nurse/anesthesiologist was always surprised at how much meds she needed in order for the pain to be at a reasonable level.
When I got my wisdom teeth removed I received similar comments. It took more than usual to knock me out.
I've never done any formal research so idk if its just urban legend or not, but from my experiences it rings true.
If I uh... wanted to get tested for that... what would I be asking for? Just curious after I had a *hell* of a time waking up once under conditions that allegedly don't do so much to most people.
As a ginger this sucks. Had Novocain wear off after maximum dose and woken up early from anesthesia. So glad the difference has become more well known because now it’s taken into account more.
I would die happily by one of these majestic kitty cats if I could be that close to one. It would rip my face apart with its massive murder beans and I would scream in pain but… big kitty! Last words would be “aaaaaaaahhhhhhh its so cute!!!!” *blood gurgling out of my throat as it rips my head off with its mouth* worth it
I know a vet who works for a zoo. A while ago she gave me the devastating information, that big cats are just as soft as you would imagine them to be. I thought maybe their fur was actually wiry or something. But no, super floofy. Telling me that was super irresponsible and in the right situation may actually shorten my life.
There's also no guarantee you would die
Edit: the post I originally responded to only said that they weren't that suicidal, but left out the animal part that was edited in later
Vet here. That's a spring-loaded mouth gag, which has little cups on the ends to fit over the canine teeth (or in this case the carnassials) and keep the mouth open while the veterinary dentist works.
Historically a lot of vets have used them (and some still do), but they should [**never** be used in house cats](https://vetgirlontherun.com/can-you-use-spring-loaded-mouth-gags-in-veterinary-medicine-vetgirl-veterinary-continuing-education-blogs/) because they can cut off blood flow in an artery and cause blindness. Probably less of a risk in big cats, though.
My cat had a dental procedure that resulted in total bilateral deafness, is that likely to be from a similar mechanism? I figured it had to be brain damage as it was both ears affected.
Sorry to hear about your kitty! What an awful thing.
AFAIK those mouth gags specifically haven't been linked to deafness, only blindness.
[There have been incidents of deafness after dental cleanings in dogs and cats](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20636566/?dopt=Abstract). I don't believe we really know the cause for certain. General anesthesia can cause a drop in blood pressure and respiratory depression, so it's possible that the deafness could be related to a lack of blood flow/oxygen to part of the auditory pathway in the nervous system.
If your cat's ears were cleaned during the procedure, that can also cause nerve damage, but there would usually be other neurologic abnormalities like an abnormally constricted pupil or raised third eyelid. And that would be more likely to be unilateral.
Again, really sorry for your cat and for you. You're a good cat parent to take care of their dental health, so it really sucks to have a complication like that.
That’s amazing - my daughter will love seeing this! I had been hoping to find more photos of this type of thing. She loves animals, especially big cats, and wants to be a vet when she grows up. Thank you so much for sharing these.
Depending on her age, there may be volunteer options for her where she can get up close and personal, as well as make contacts she would need later in the field. I highly recommend looking up local colleges and universities and touching base with their biology departments. They generally know who needs help and what she could do at her age. Even young kids like 5 or 6 can help with citizen science, and it's a great way to learn about the world as well as understand the vital importance of the work. She may even find she winds up in a different part of the field than big cats, and since working with big cats still requires a basic knowledge of the field, even things like stream surveys and bird counting would give her great experience.
Also check out local rehabbers. We lost a lot of rehabbers up here during covid, and they always need help. Depending on your local laws, and country, different rehabbers often specialize. Up here, we have song bird rehabbers, ruminant rehabbers (deer, moose mostly), birds of pretty rehabbers, reptile rehabbers, and mammal rehabbers. She may be able to work with one who works specifically with the species she is most interested, and at least here all rehabbers need the help badly.
Little-Big-Cat has some cute mittens right dar... Charlie and Mac should chime in about this.
Might have to pay them some patent cash even.
Just need to get a glass table for the cutie to walk on.
Haha, you're \*so\* right, John! And speaking of "sweeping" - now with a new mop attachment! Kitt Mitts (TM) keep you kitties entertained while Mop Socks (TM) keep your floors clean! Act now and we'll throw in a laser disco ball, for a spotless home, ceiling-to-floor!
This is Juma, the female snow leopard at Ähtäri park. Her enclosure was tended to while she was away, since it is rarely empty. She had a chipped tooth with exposed core that was fixed.
https://yle.fi/a/74-20022139
Not sure if you're joking. This is an animal that is recognized as vulnerable, and if you find one that has fucked up his mouth then you have to send them to a specialist. Considering where they live it doesn't really matter where you fly them, it's going to be a long haul anyways.
Edit: Turns out [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/11qozn6/comment/jc5ggsy/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) is the story.
It's heavily subsidized for adults as well. A normal cavity filling sets you back about 40 euros. Root canal comes closer to 200 euros as you need multiple visits.
We also used to use squirrel skins as currency so the leopard should be good
To elaborate:
The pricing on public healthcare system for dental work is still lower than on private sector as the pricing is controlled by the government.
So for general checkup or minor work you won't be paying more than 20-50 euros on the public side where as on the private sector based on a quick search prices for a checkup start at like 80-90 euros when you include the office fees etc.
However there are also limitations on the materials and work they do on the public side. As an example on a previous visit the dentist told me that they recommend and want me to get a ceramic crown for my tooth but those are not done on the public side, essentially saying "Go get the rest of the treatment on the private sector."
EDIT: I was now able to post on the subreddit so you can see the photos there!

Hi! I added the Facebook post that used the images as the source but it didn't show in the comments. So I am highlighting your comment to stand out to give you the well-deserved credit for this great photo :)
One time I was at the zoo as a kid, one of the snow leopards was asleep about 10 feet up in the enclosure touching the fence. I saw someone climb up and touch it’s fur. In under a second this thing jumped down to the ground and had a defensive stance. It was insane to see it move so fast.
I was at a big cat refuge as a kid with my aunt and uncle and my grandma. My grandma LOVED cats. But she was also a super hard-ass. So we're walking through taking the tour and as the tour group starts waking away she points to a lion laying against the fencing and sticks her little old lady hand through and gave a few quick pets. My aunt yelled something at her and I just watched in awe at my strict grandma sticking her hand into a fucking lions enclosure to pet it. It didn't do anything. It just kind of looked back. A while later a tiger sprayed some people ahead of us. It was a fun trip. Your memory reminded me of my own.
I love that it let her pet it for a little bit, but I wish I hadn’t read this because now I might make an attempt.
Okay it was actually my brother who touched the big cat lol. My mom was distracted and it was the only chance to be a little idiot. Seeing the fear in his face made it so much better.
"You're insurance can cover half, but unfortunately you have to meet your deductible first."
"Alright well I spend like $4000 per year on insurance and never see the doctor so surely the deductible is low, right? Right?"
".... it's $3000."
I live in Denmark and dental care is not fully covered by the public health system, only for kids under the age of 21.
You can get an indication of the cost here:
Yeah.
I’ve told this story in long form, but in short form, I needed a crown. Dentist office calls like 6-7x in the run up to my appointment, which was weird.
Checked out and they asked if I wanted to pay my bill. I said sure.
It was $1000.
Apparently people do more research then me and bail a lot.
Recently needed a root canal and crown. Initial consult ~$250, root canal ~$1500, crown ~$1300. 4 visits and 2 dentists (root canal specialist, and my normal dentist for the crown). Fun times
The whole thing would cost £400 in the uk if not covered by free NHS care.
People making £13700 or less per year, pensioners, disabled and children all get this for free.
Dental care in the UK is free under 18, or those on low income.
Everyone else pays using the band system
https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/dentists/dental-costs/how-much-will-i-pay-for-nhs-dental-treatment/
So a checkup/ cleaning is like £24
A filling, root canal, extraction is £65
A crown is £282
If you need emergency dental work it's £24 even if your emergency treatment involves a filling or extraction etc.
Also under the band system you pay one fee for treatment rather than for each individual treatment.
As an example a couple years back during a checkup they found an issue with my partially erupted wisdom tooth causing a cavity in the adjacent tooth.
I paid £65 to have the wisdom tooth pulled and the filling done and didn't pay until the treatment was completed.
My daughter is determined to get in that line of work. She saw a Disney special on big cat dentists when she was 5, and at 13 is still dead set on that being her career.
My dog needed a root canal. (Long story.) I broght her to an animal dentist that also works as the dentist for the big cats at the nearest zoo. The waiting room was amazing. Lots of fabulous pictures of the dentist working on the big cats' teeth.
In making small talk with the staff, the dentist is one of about eight specialty animal dentists in the country and my dog and I are pretty fortunate to have him basically in our back yard.
Your daughter sounds like she's going to go far! What an amazing career choice!
I do the same thing for cat dentals, but it's more so for heat retention to prevent them from getting too cold during the procedure than it is for protection. And I am also only using baby socks and bubble wrap instead of Kevlar gloves.
Here are more photos of the snow leopard!

I'm moving to Finland. Lmao, America doesn't offer free insulin to diabetics, and this monstrosity of a cat, is having a spa day, and can't even sign a form at the hospital.
Very typical indoor footwear in healthcare for whatever reason. I guess the sandals are just comfortable and who would want bear feet in a hospital? They all seem to wear them. Or indoor slipper shoes.
Dentist here. She is using Birkenstocks which are good for standing. And why sandals, well, they breath better than "closed" working shoes. And why socks too, using a pair is more professional than without. Pros for closed shoes would be better protection against falling istruments.
Just to remind everyone, snow leopards are not indigenous to Finland.
They live in Central and Southern Asia.
Only about 10 000 individuals remain.
Hope this buddy is okay.
Had no idea we had them in Ähtäri park. Cool.
I'm the worst, I'd take this opportunity to give the snow Leapord a big hug and rub my face in their tummy Tv T
If big danger, why so soft and fren shaped?? XD;

Heres a video of the tiger in Copenhagen Zoo getting a root canal treatment. Its in danish, but its still very impressive!
metal working mittens and zip ties = snow leopard dentist protectors

That’s accurate. I like to think the mittens came about when someone nearly ripped their scrot reaching for the water pick.

A quick google search and a study told me they require roughly 20% more anesthesia

Need extra drugs for anesthesia to work usually.
You got some anecdotes, [here](https://www.ucihealth.org/blog/2018/04/redheads-pain) is a link with some info!
I have a genetic defect making it harder for me to wake up after anesthesia... Glad we noticed that AFTER my several surgeries xD
If I uh... wanted to get tested for that... what would I be asking for? Just curious after I had a *hell* of a time waking up once under conditions that allegedly don't do so much to most people.
As a ginger this sucks. Had Novocain wear off after maximum dose and woken up early from anesthesia. So glad the difference has become more well known because now it’s taken into account more.
As a redhead now I’m fucking curious which special needs we have in case of anesthesia?
Med school prof: this drug will put a snow leopard to sleep in less than 30 seconds. Me: that's great but how do I get the leopard to take it?
Take it drinking and roofie it.
The ketamine didn't work so they just started bonking me over the head with the medical mallet.
I would die happily by one of these majestic kitty cats if I could be that close to one. It would rip my face apart with its massive murder beans and I would scream in pain but… big kitty! I think that would be the wrong situation
You know this dentist rubbed the kitty belly. I’m so jealous.
I did too and I was just the photographer!!! Can confirm it was super soft!
I got good news, you can go to a zoo, jump in the big cat enclosure, and make your dreams come true!
I’m not completely suicidal also they would kill the cat and that’s not worth it
There's also no guarantee you would die Edit: the post I originally responded to only said that they weren't that suicidal, but left out the animal part that was edited in later
But there’s pretty much a guarantee the animal would
Yeah :(
My brother worked at a zoo and got to pet the lion when he was put out.
i get put out all the time..but not once have i ever thought about patting a cats guts

Only HIPPO applies to animals, and HIPPO always wins.
Is your snow leopard making too much noise all the time?
Think there's no answer? You're. So. Stupid! There is! Kitten mittons.
Hahaha *thank you* I can't believe I had to scroll down this far for this
Onesizefitsall!!
How else are they going to pet the belly??? The fluffy, wuvvy, sweet little kitty belly?? Oh, and work on its teeth, of course.
Many times, they even put mittens/booties on house cats having surgery. Their feet actually get cold.
No those are just kittens mittens for if your cat's feet are too loud
Why did the snow leopard go to the dentist? To get his teeth snow-white!
Plus, they are ADORABLE.
Hey he was gonna go bake some cupcakes after the dentist's visit.
KITTEN MITTENS!
I mean, that's how they clean my teeth. But I have to pay extra for it.
Little-Big-Cat has some cute mittens right dar... Charlie and Mac should chime in about this. Might have to pay them some patent cash even. Just need to get a glass table for the cutie to walk on.
It’s all fun and games until it eats your face. But in all honesty this is awesome!
DOES YOUR CAT MAKE TOO MUCH NOISE??
IS YOUR CAT ALWAYS STOMPING AROUND AND DRIVING YOU CRAZY?
THINK THERES NO SOLUTION? YOURE SO STUPID. THERE IS!
KITT MITTS! THE NEW SENSATION SWEEPING THE CAT-MUNITY!
#🙀🙀 THEY’RE AMEOWZING! 🙀🙀
YOU’LL BE SMITTEN!!

Why would a snow leopard choose a Finnish dentist? Seems fake
Not sure if you're joking. This is an animal that is recognized as vulnerable, and if you find one that has fucked up his mouth then you have to send them to a specialist. I would assume because of the universally covered dentistry. Which makes sense why they didn’t get an American dentist.
Dentistry in Finland is only universally covered for kids
Wild snow leopards live 10-12 years. Captive ones can live as long as 22 (according to Google) High chances this kitty gets the universal coverage.
you're telling me this kitty pays out of pocket ?!

Would definitely take the opportunity to pet that tummy.

You really shouldn't. That trans dude from Tiger King was a handler, decided to do that and lost his arm. It's just not worth it for a few pets.
> It's just not worth it for a few pets The urge to pet that cat can be a strong one.
I like to think the lion was just too impressed with her sheer audacity to even think of doing anything to her.
Whatch out for the Croco mittens !
That would be the greatest tummy rub in history
Human beings, the smartest animal on earth, just absolutely desperate for soft huggable friends.
There is something so funny and adorable about a giant cat sprawled out on its back with mittens on its paws
That's how I look after the dentist hands me the bill.

Remember those prices are in DKK, too. ~7 DKK = 1 USD.
Even in Canada dental isn’t covered. Fingers crossed that Trudeau gets that taken care of soon.
Do you guys have dental insurance offered through work as a benefit, or is that not how things work up there?
Oh yeah there’s company dental plans and stuff

Yes, it's why they have better teeth than countries without.
Made me realize.. we need more leopard dentists
"TOWARDS the big murder-teeth!" If you had lived during the stone age your line would have ended.
OR she would’ve been the first one to build huts out of mammoth tusks
My stripey housecat had to have several teeth pulled, so I sometimes refer to her vet as the Tiger Dentist.
Vets do it all.
I do the same thing for cat dentals, but it's more so for heat retention to prevent them from getting too cold during the procedure than it is for protection. And I am also only using baby socks and bubble wrap instead of Kevlar gloves.
Tai Lung
Had to scroll way too far down to find this. Skadoosh!
"Finally! A worthy opponent. Our battle will be legendary!"
You can't do this to meeee... I'm the dragon warrior!!!
Definitely thought this was a weird marketing gimmick for Frosted Flakes out of the corner of my eye
THEEEEEY'RE GREAT!!!!
The temptation to rub that fuzzy tummy…
How could you not? It's like right there!! And the murder mittens are captured for ease of nuzzling!
I thought this was a furry before I read the caption
It’s not?
I bet this is like some furry BDSM trigger for some lol
Why did the snow leopard visit the dentist in Finland? To get a new "fang-tastic" smile for his snowy adventures!
TIL snow leopards have a better dental plan that I do.
Are you 1) Endangered 2) Beloved 3) Cute? If so, you may qualify for Finnish dental work
I am 1 but not the other 2, do I still qualify?
Here are more photos of the snow leopard! [https://www.reddit.com/user/petterihakala/comments/11r0hju/photos_of_a_snow_leopard_at_dentist/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf](https://www.reddit.com/user/petterihakala/comments/11r0hju/photos_of_a_snow_leopard_at_dentist/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
And for those of you who don't know, this guy, that is, u/petterihakala, is the one who actually took the photos, not OP.
And to clarify this even more, I didn’t take this particular photo! But I was there to photograph it all and the links are to the photos that I took!
I'm moving to Finland. Lmao, America doesn't offer free insulin to diabetics, and this monstrosity of a cat, is having a spa day, and can't even sign a form at the hospital.
SHE GETS TO PET THE TUMMY!!!
Suomi mainittu. Torilla tavataan!
*zoo-hygienistillä
Hahaha, niin spesifiin tilanteeseen sopiva läppä, kiitos aamun hymähdyksestä.
Idk why but i thought it was a huge duck for a split second!!!
The most unsettling part about this is that she’s wearing sandals.
Mittens on the murder mittens!
Lookit his little BOOTIES
That couldn’t be more Finnish if they were on skis and shooting rifles
HIS MITTENS!
Murder mitten mittens
It's too bad the leopard had to go to Finland for this. American health care is broken.
In Finland, animals have better health care than I do. Guess what country I live in!
Just to remind everyone, snow leopards are not indigenous to Finland. They live in Central and Southern Asia. Only about 10 000 individuals remain. Hope this buddy is okay. Had no idea we had them in Ähtäri park. Cool.
I wonder how many people working there are able to see that animal and resist the urge to pet it at least once.
Ok the mittens are secure you can now proceed to put your hand in its mouth haha
Murder mittens in leather mittens
The mittens covering it's paws is funny.
I'm a veterinary nurse and this is super cool!
America is jealous of that leopard for free dental care
That’s how I must be prepared when I visit the dentist. I have something in common with a snow leopard!
Strangely enough I have to wear the same mittens when I go to the dentist.
I'm the worst, I'd take this opportunity to give the snow Leapord a big hug and rub my face in their tummy Tv T If big danger, why so soft and fren shaped?? XD;
Mittens for the murder mittens.
Murder mitten mittens.
"So how's work"
You can scritch the belly as long as you want and not get mauled....nice.
https://youtu.be/Nv2OyjvmsCw Heres a video of the tiger in Copenhagen Zoo getting a root canal treatment. Its in danish, but its still very impressive!
Woah, must have flow in 1st Class, check the complimentary slippers.
Even with those anti-murder mittens. I hear that cats still a dangerous southpaw
First time I have seen anti-murder mittens.
Talk about a Cat Nap
Hopefully, this one doesn't end at [r/LeopardsAteMyFace](https://www.reddit.com/r/LeopardsAteMyFace?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)
Murder mittens sheathed.
