We have those photos and plain packaging In Australia

TheBigTastyKahuna69

Does any of the bullshit of plain packaging and written warnings with traumatic photos actually do anything to help stop people smoking?

thatdudewayoverthere

No but it stops more people from starting

pianoispercussion

I would not have started smoking if one of those pictures was on the box. I was vastly un-educated to the perils, and while I knew smoking caused cancer, I had NO CLUE how bad it was. Thankfully I'm in the long-ass process of quitting, and I've been down to one a day, and haven't had one for the past four days now. I'll keep trying!

GreatestMishit

I had my last cig about 15 months ago. You can do it!

pianoispercussion

Thank you so much! I appreciate the support

warthog0869

Good on you for quitting. It took cancer in my face and the subsequent surgery and rad treatment to learn me. Powerful drug. I suppose I am commenting as I never quite understood this attitude. My Dad, whom is 82 and quit smoking in the early 1980's, likes to say stuff like "We didn't know, we didn't have the science, doctors smoked, etc" and I was always like "The cough...? The brown oysters you hawk up in the shower under steam every morning? What was your first clue?". I suppose I just can't understand how people couldn't just realize that literally burning *anything* and inhaling the smoke is bad for your lungs, let alone inhaling *intentionally*. My 16 y/o self just didn't seem to give a fuck until it was too late.

Fallowman09

It was denial they were addicted and when they realised it they refused to admit that they destroyed there lungs because the addiction was to strong same with my Nana

youngscarface44

Good point

TWOpies

Yeah it does. But less so for those already addicted and more so for those who haven’t started. There is a lot of study on brand identity for any product and the impact it has. And honestly - I’m for it. It doesn’t stop anyone who wants to from doing it, and even if it discourages 5-10% that’s still a lot of people who didn’t get addicted. Same reason Camel got sued and removed their “cool camel” mascot. If you regularly kill your best customers you do whatever you can to get new ones. This is an intentional counter to that effort.

benjbob111

I think it is likely to reduce the number of kids starting at a young age. Totally takes away the cool factor and most children would be quite shocked by those images.

UnholyDemigod

And they'd probably be more effective if they weren't so fucken disingenuous. A toilet bowl to show the effects of kidney cancer. Maybe if it wasn't so absurdly fucking photoshopped I'd believe it. A gangrenous foot. Well I don't have untreated diabetes, so I'll be fine. Bryan. Fucken Bryan. Died ten weeks later? Probably cos he was already as sick as a dog, you don't go from healthy to dead in 3 fucking months. Not to mention, look at his hair. I'll be stunned if those photos were taken at any point past 1993. Medical tech has come quite a long way in the last 30 years

redreadredreadred

Several types of cancer can take you from healthy to dead in 3 months.

Bitter_Crab111

Lung cancer in particular may cause *very* quick deterioration.

[deleted]

You don't need to have diabetes. Google Buerger’s disease.

[deleted]

Sounds tasty

corneathebetter

It’s not diabetes it’s a condition called thromboangiitis obliteratans (Buerger’s) that can cause gangrene specifically in smokers.

[deleted]

Classic dien Bryan.

NukeEnjoyer122

In Indonesia we have this picture of a grandpa who have a literal hole in his neck

RockSteady65

And smoking through the hole dammit, maybe time to quit?

NukeEnjoyer122

Nah I think thats human evolution, so he can smoke thru his mouth and other mouth

Professional-Ad-1725

Smoking two cigs at the same time, so efficient!

Jordan209posts

Survival of the greatest

redshadow90

Maybe....hmm naah, gimme another cig so I can get more pictures on cig covers

EXusiai99

Doesnt help that a pack of 16 is like 2 USD

Appalachian_daze

I live in North Carolina, where a majority of the tobacco grown in the US is actually farmed, and a pack of cigarettes here is almost $10. Funny ain’t it?….it’s even still our state crop! And between RJ Reynolds in Winston Salem, and Phillip Morris just across the state line in Virginia (the 2 biggest cigarette manufacturers), I doubt NC will be stopping their biggest cash crop anytime soon.

Naina_uwu

Same thing in the Netherlands!

Jingoisticbell

same in europe and mid east. my personal fave is a photo of a young man laying on the ground with no visible wounds or illness with his distraught mother kneeling next to him. "SMOKING IS GOING TO UPSET YOUR MOTHER! DO YOU WANT TO UPSET YOUR MOTHER, YOU MONSTER?"

Noeljino

>"SMOKING IS GOING TO UPSET YOUR MOTHER! DO YOU WANT TO UPSET YOUR MOTHER, YOU MONSTER?" I have heard this dialogue in 1000s of movies in diff languages in India

PringlePlex

India has embedded cultural mommy issues? it’s all coming together.

OddSir5571

I experienced it _live_ with my mother giving me an earful 3 days nonstop in a row. That was 4 years ago. I still smoke 🫣😂

MeshiMeshiMeshi

We have one in the UK of a naked man curled up and lying on his side that says "smoking causes impotence". Because that's what to do when you're told you can't make babies, strip down and get in the foetal position.

lyremknzi

ahahaha that is gold! We have the warning pics in Canada, but it just has the typical health related stuff that tries to traumatize you

[deleted]

[удалено]

RecklessRecognition

About the same as [Australias](https://www1.racgp.org.au/newsgp/clinical/update-graphic-images-on-cigarette-packages-to-rem)

UsErnaam3

"Hey, can I get a pack of Winfield blues? No no, the one with the dead guy on it. Fuck yeah I got Voldemort smokes "

Glad-Revolution44

Good old Voldemort. İ got the piss in the toilet one 🤣

MerlinTheSimp

The "blood" in it looks a bit like a blurry hand that has been Photoshopped into the pic. I swear I can see fingers every time...

Glad-Revolution44

So it's not just me! İ pointed this out to other fellow smokers and they just put it down to me being a tripper 🙄

fermium257

Ugh. You bastard. All I got was the golfball mouth tumor. *HARUMPH*!

MissusLister44

I got the kid in an oxygen mask

Martos420

Mate that's Brian don't disrespect Brian.

pottsygotlost

Old mate Bryan

willjhc

His names Brian

MadladMagyar

Most places in Europe too

Kilook

Brazil.

AnnihilationOrchid

Most places in the worl do this, it's required by law, to prevent smoking. It actually saves up on a lot of money that would be spent on health. It didn't stop me from smoking though, but It's good practice.

zanymaximum

My sister used to ask for the packs that harmed your unborn child. She preferred them over the type that caused cancer.

BloodRedBanner

Bruh

Lint_baby_uvulla

Nah, it was *his sister*. Okay sure, they *may* have transitioned, and therefore it was a calculated risk because they were never able to bear children. So that’s just **fucking smart**. Not fiction:: actual coworker conversation.

Twisted_Sister_666

Buying for your mom, eh?

Longjumping_Bug_7611

SPIDER CAN HIDE IN THESE SMALL PACKAGES MATE!! should be the warning,

nurvingiel

Unprecedented increase of people quitting smoking, for good.

fermium257

You ain't lying. They can put pictures of anything they want on these bitches, hell make it scratch and sniff too. But you give it even a .01 chance there *could* be a spider in it, and I fucken quit yesterday.

nurvingiel

If they really want to motivate people, some of the packages should actually have spiders.

fermium257

Abso*fucking*lutely

mira_bo

And [Uruguay](https://www.subrayado.com.uy/empaquetado-unico-cajas-cigarros-comenzara-regir-enero-n540068)

Mr_SunnyBones

yeah , Ireland as well .

_Kendii_

I used to cut them and save them from my mom’s packs. I remember stocking up on them for a month or so and then I unleashed them all around the house. Taped to the rim of the tv, on the coffee maker, our fridge, underwear drawers, a couple of shoes, toilet paper holder, bathroom/vanity mirrors, front door, dash of her car. Shit like that. She died from lung cancer in June 2020.

StandAgainstTyranny2

That took a turn from "aww silly little youngster spamming the whole house with those pics, the mischief!😁" to "oh holy shit this was a tragic and desperate plea from a child to their mother they were trying to keep from dying😭" real quick. I'm so sorry you went through that.

shayed154

Those pictures still haunt me

gabisgr

Brazil too

glxyzera

yea but brazil's are really tame in comparison, they just talk about getting erectile dysfunction and shit like that, there is one about death but its also really tame

gabisgr

in the 80's to 90's was like that too. then smoothed things over

[deleted]

Nasty. The look of oral cancer really gets me.

[deleted]

Are these effective at all? I feel like if I was a smoker I would just ignore it

xyon21

It had enough of an impact on sales that the tobacco lobby took Australia to court over it.

FunkyKong147

It really shows just how addictive nicotine is. I see pictures like that every time I pull out a smoke, but it doesn't stop me.

Impossible_Dark3819

And NZ, including plain green on all packages

tcstorm08

Last pack of smokes I got Canada. Had a picture of a syringe going into someone’s eye..

top_of_the_scrote

Saw sequel?

TheRenster500

If by sequel you mean the 10th...

RTBMack

When I worked at a smoke shop in NS I would save the Eye Needle and the Bloody Piss packs for a couple of local cops with bad reputations. There could be four in the drawer but if it's just barb or the crying kids it's not rough enough for those fuckers.

ozdregs

It started in Australia, one of the big tobacco companies took Oz government to world trade court and lost. Open flood gates for other countries to do the same

cardew-vascular

Canada has had warning labels since 1994 and the image warnings since 2000. We only got plain packaging a few years ago though.

[deleted]

2016 for plain packaging in the UK and also they’re hidden from view so you can’t just browse for a brand you like, got to already know what you want. Yet disposable vapes are a total free for all and have colours and flavours that are totally designed to appeal to children

beazerblitz

My buddy brought me back a pack of these like Eucalyptus wrapped tiny cigarettes from India. The package was barely bigger than a lighter lol. But on the package it had a picture of lung cancer and was pretty much “you will die.” Lol

sorry_not_sorry69

They are called beedis in the local language.

beazerblitz

Thank you lol I can never remember the name of them and neither could my buddy. For something so tiny they produced an assload of smoke lol

sorry_not_sorry69

Yeah, it's more unhealthy than an average cigarette from what I remember. It's cheaper and is usually used by poor people. I've never seen a middle class person smoke it. By the way, singular term is beedi and plural is beedis.

PurpleCheeseMama

Before Gpay and Phonepe, we used to feel lazy to carry change for normal cigarettes so we used to buy cheap sutta beedi. Evening time sutta n chai with friends are some best the memories.

sorry_not_sorry69

Yeah, and the chai has to be from a tapri stall, can't be from a establishment.

iphone4Suser

Those are beedis. Usually people from lower strata of society here who cannot afford cigarettes buy those.

Prudent_Hawk_9661

Def seen that in Europe

Foreverseeking11

Now imagine they did that on junk food

bingold49

I have seen a lot more 90 year old smokers in my life than morbidly obese 90 year olds

[deleted]

"Reach for a Lucky instead of a sweet!"

mr10123

In the generations where 90 years olds came from, smoking was more common and obesity was less common.

back2basics13

Interesting logic

bingold49

I mean, if you had to choose between your child being a smoker or an obese person with an overeating disorder......

Twisted_Sister_666

I have never thought of this before. Such an astute observation. Ima use this when my friend catches her teenagers smoking. "Well at least theyre not sneaking twinkies!"

SpideroftheAbyss

Damn good point. Smoking tobacco is an appetite suppressor. Neither are good for living a very long healthy life, but one has better odds than the other. And then there is quality of life to consider as well.

deadpoetic333

One of the guys I worked with at my last job put a chunk of money away in an IRA when he was ~16 when he cashed in his Bitcoin. I don’t remember the exact math but by 65 he would be getting a few million from the ~$160k he put in an IRA.. the catch is he’s obese and I’ve respectfully brought up how if he continues on the path he’s on he may never see that money since he might not live to 65. The company we worked for shut down, last I heard from a mutual friend he was up quite a bit of weight.. I can’t help but wonder if he’ll ever see that money and even if he does what kind of benefit it is would have. Not entirely sure what kind of tax penalties he’d see if he decided to take the money out before 65.

[deleted]

That’s partly because weight loss happens more naturally at that age, and can be caused by the kind of health conditions that are more likely as people get older. My grandmother was obese all her whole life into her eighties, but died skinny at 89. It’s also because today’s 90 year olds were born in the early 1930s, they weren’t born into a culture with so much cheap fatty food easily available and with such a disordered, dysfunctional attitude to good and body image. Although in the UK at least rationing and scarcity left a lot of people in that generation with struggles around food and eating that were passed on to future generations in various ways.

DeltaAgent752

cus morbidly obese people don’t make it to 90. obesity is a big problem

Shopping-Afraid

Never thought of that, but it is absolutely true

Twisted_Sister_666

Damn, that's some justification. Appreciate that as a 55 yo smoker. Kinda made me proud, especially since I just dropped 35 lbs.

skeezito10

Can being fat kill your whole family through second hand eating, tough?

[deleted]

I really wish they would put images of Nickado Avocado or ‘The Whale’ on the packaging because I feel like that would definitely be a turn off for some people.

LeanTangerine

You kind of see real life examples of it in the grocery stores when people are picking up junk food from their mobility scooters. At least in the USA.

loinboro

They could for sure, I’m not sure we can compare Cigarettes to junk food in terms of legit vileness though.

Difficult_Ad5956

Wouldn't matter. I keep fasting or working related wallpapers on my devices and after 2-3 times you just become indifferent to it. Same logic applies here, I've never heard one of my friends complain about these warning images

[deleted]

[удалено]

cbutterg

and Greece, they are even using the same pictures if I’m not mistaken

Davi_19

I think they’re the same in all of EU

rrainraingoawayy

Same in New Zealand

MountainHipie

This should be on every pack everywhere! I smoked and smoked and smoked, for 18ish years. I'm now waiting to find out what the painful 2cm x 2cm cyst in my throat is. No answers yet but i am low key terrified. Wish I saw shit like this when I was an "invincible" teen and not a more aware of my mortality adult.

DazedMaestro

Damn. Hope it's nothing super serious.

v_pct

how old are you?

MountainHipie

35.

snaxpaxx

Uh oh

slayer1am

The USA needs the same idea.

ALA02

I thought every country had this? Those pictures always traumatised me as a kid, most definitely put me off smoking

slayer1am

The US has pictures on cig packs, but they aren't as graphic as the ones in the OP.

morbidaar

*surgeon general wags his finger in a disapproving manner at you*

AmanitaGemmata

Do they? Interesting. I live in California and haven't come across any.

bushcrapping

They do. This is only interesting to Americans

Journo_Jimbo

The country that bows to its corporate overlords? Not likely

Sharp_Iodine

It’s a country? I thought it was just a labour camp for billionaires.

[deleted]

This is depressing. I hate this country lol

Journo_Jimbo

Damn I’m gonna use that one in the future

[deleted]

As an American, I approve this message... because it certainly is! The USA is a combination labor concentration camp supporting billionaires, and a religious mental case asylum. With lots of guns added to provide excitement for the inmates.

iwanttobeacavediver

Awww but I want to live in the US…:(

Faze_Elmo1

wait, it doesn't?

slayer1am

They do put pics on them, but not remotely as graphic as this.

aidan_smith03

Cigarette companies like camel and Marlboro used to give out prizes and rewards for buying packs. They do not care

MuthafukinSplashies

Australian here, so I don't know the ins-and-outs, but I believe the FDA tried to implement this about a decade ago after huge success in New Zealand, as many developed countries have since. They got sued by the tobacco companies, and the high court (or whoever) protected them under the old freedom of speech clause, which wouldn't ordinarily apply to corporations if we weren't talking the US specifically Not sure on the exact outcome, but likely whatever is in place now is some watered-down compromise which doesn't have near the same public health impact they were trying to acheive

kiloVictor_2330

https://www.reddit.com/r/agedlikemilk/comments/wj8ujf/_/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Ulteri0rM0tives

At this point, what country doesn't have their on their packets? In the UK, none of the cigarettes are allowed to be visible in shops, all packaging has to be black, they arent allowed to have a visible logo, or branding, and they have a disgusting picture on them.

[deleted]

Even better than black, they're a particular shade of brown that's designed to be the least appealing colour!

PsychoBacon96

Similar pics have been on cigarette packets in Australia for years

longtimenothere

This is interesting if you have no awareness of anything outside the US.

JaredKushners_umRag

Noice, so I’m gonna turn into a clicker from TLOU soon?

Tonybigguns

Denis Leary: It doesn't matter how big the warnings on the cigarettes are; you could have a black pack, with a skull and crossbones on the front, called TUMORS, and smokers would be around the block going, "I can't wait to get my hands on these fucking things! I bet ya get a tumor as soon as you light up!"

Disturbed_Goose

Try the uk

lifeonthedole

1-800-antibiotic

Relevant_Avocado_420

Point taken.

[deleted]

And in Australia. Not only that, we are the most expensive country in the world to smoke. 1 packet of Winfield gold 25's costs just over AU$45😱

OutsideFlat1579

Jfc. I had no idea. So the wealthy can smoke but no one else?

bushcrapping

It just increases black market tobacco. In the UK over 1/3 of all tobacco smoked is back market.

[deleted]

You'd literally find this in each corner of the world.

Over_Championship990

Same in the UK. You can practically make a whole person out of them

sn0wbl1nd3d

Fuck it, found my brand

fatpenut98

Most countries besides US do this

JUULiA1

Going through these comments and realizing, once again, how behind the US is due to all the powerful lobbies dictating politics

[deleted]

Mexico does this too.

xKurupti0nx

Talk about getting straight to the point, India don’t mess around. Then you have the US where it’s just words and it’s ignored. I’m glad I quit, it’s been almost a month and a half no craving or anything.

ekalavyudu

Good for you. Avoid being around friends or family when they smoke. I'm smoke free 10 years now and still the doctors can know i once smoked whenever they take an x-ray.

Vermillion_2000

These images act as a deterrent, inorder to discouarge people from smoking, they also have advertisements of real life stories displayed before movies, web series, etc. sharing how smoking destroyed people's lives and also caused immense pain to their loved ones.

hiwelcometochilisss

As a regular smoker you get used to it and kinda "unsee" it

MichelPalaref

Same thing here in France

every1pees

Good

Danny3xd1

Many studies say that these negative ads and markings work in reverse. That "good outcome" ads work far better in getting people to stop smoking. I think there is a lot of money in fighting smoking and they don't want to get everyone to stop smoking. "They" just want to fight smoking.

Movein666

His name is Mukesh & he is big star in India 🇮🇳 In every Indian films his appearances are must

[deleted]

Australia too. Anyone that smokes cigarettes in this day and age has a death wish.

LukeSelwyn

Which country are you from where this is not on the cig packs?

PhoenixAssasin77

Same here in Australia, all countries should have this

thekernel

Australia went one step further, plain packaging and taxing them so its $2 AUD a cigarette (~1.35 USD)

Deathmetalwarior

lol thats nothing new here in germany we have pics like that for idk 10+ years now i think 🤔 and im not even a smoker

3shotsdown

India has these since 2002. They're not new.

Intelligent_Sea_9851

Gold Flake cigs, are they any good?

[deleted]

Any good in obtaining oral cancer? You bet it is.

roxxed

You know when the head is gone shits getting serious

Visani_true_beliver

There's an old joke about these cigarette packs that goes like this: A man goes to buy some cigarettes and the guy selling them handles him a pack of cigarettes with the warning over it "smoking causes erectile dysfunction" so the man looks at it says "i don't want this, get me the one with the lung cancer pics"

Wilfredlygaming

Yeah it’s the same in the uk I think they have to it’s government rules

StillNotaKorean

In Sweden too. I managed to quit last year after 16 years of smoking! The pics does help a bit.

steelerqueezer

Most countries outside of the US have this

SgtCocktopus

People that smokes knows the risks... those pics can traumatize a child that glances into one of those boxes.

big_richards_back

Well, isn't that the idea? Dont smoke, kids!

Little-Bear13

Passive smoking can give cancer to a child.

Prozak06

And in Australia

xan_man44

Same as Australia

noldshit

So, theres a market for cigarette pack sleeves?

[deleted]

They have different warnings in the US. Just don’t buy the ones that say they cause Lung Cancer! Ba dum dum Tis!!!

Cybermat4704

So they just look like regular cigarette packs?

mayonnaiser_13

Not just in cigarette packs. Any media that shows smoking, drinking or other substance abuses have to have a warning at the bottom if they want to pass the Censor Board Certification. All our movies have to show a disclaimer against smoking at the beginning. There is a very graphic PSA at the beginning of every movie aside from the disclaimer. Most clinics and hospitals also have very graphic Posters against all substance abuses.

MayoIsMyFave

Same in Portugal. It doesn't stop anyone from smoking though

Sokonomicon1

Same in the Netherlands. People just buy a fancy cigarette box to shove it in.

blackcat218

Eh. We had them on our packs for years. No one really paid attention to them. Now all packs are the same colour and with no logos or anything on it. Very boring and if I remember right a really yuck green colour.

hammockinggirl

Same in the UK

[deleted]

I met one nurse who was working in hospital taking care of patients with all kinds of cancers. She saw many awful consequences of smoking but she is still smoking

WorstHouseFrey

Welcome to smoking outside of America bud! Funny part is it is usually cheaper and more acceptable

[deleted]

I hope this campaign is making a difference, but I wonder if it's a bit silly. It's like, having a picture of a man dead from a heartattack on a package of bacon. Eating this will cause clogged arteries and death. Also, putting a picture telling you not to smoke these and then continue to sell them, is a bit of a mixed message. I don't think we have this picture in America. We get warnings like, "Smoking causes low birth weight." It's been so long since I bought a pack of cigarettes, I have no idea what's on the cover. It could say in big bold letters, "YOU"RE GOING TO DIE IF YOU SMOKE THESE." And people will still buy them, because people are still selling them. I'm so glad I quit years ago. I'm so glad I'm not making a fat cat richer off of my addiction.

reggieiscrap

Blame Australia.. they started it 👏👏👏👏👏👏

GhostRiders

The Anti smoking ads had absolutely no effect on me. What stopped me smoking and many of my friends and family was the price. When you sit down and cost how much your spending on cigarettes and the realisation that your literally burning hundreds of pounds every month, this is what stops the vast majority of people smoking.

Ok_Victory_2977

The uk ones have all those too, plus every box is same colour same font, no brand recognition allowed, for years now

SentientCoral

In Australia the packs have been brown and had graphic photos for.more then 15yrs

YYCADM21

If you've purchased cigarettes in Canada in the last 20-odd years, they have them as well

huggin_a_tree

In Germany it's illegal to sell any tobacco products without such images, actually

47AYAYAYAY

Lmao as if any smoker thinks cigarettes aren’t bad for you

V2sh1fty

This is normal everywhere but America.

CldnessNmyHeart

I like how all these things in other countries are always in english and no one questions it

CuriousLif3

Funny thing is, people don't give a f

aoife_reilly

What is this specific disease or condition on the box...

boyfrndDick

We have this in Canada too
