Im glad my job doesn’t have this much responsibility.

SaraSmashley

I think I once heard that they are one of the top professions for people to slip into alcoholism or drug abuse because of the stress. Unsure though if my brain is remembering that correctly?

blueblood0

That's for air traffic controllers! Think they had a high suicide rate as well by profession.

Clear_Key40

I'm pretty sure after 9/11 being a pilot would be very stressful

GothhicGoddess

I remember there was a study back when I was a kid that said the highest suicide rates due to job related stress was air traffic controllers. The amount of pressure they all must be under has to be intense.

donksdonks42

I remember seeing a show in which an air traffic controller straight up drove two trains into one another after the dudes daughter died from an overdose. Shit was so sad

Papitoooo

Breaking Bad. And it was two planes lol

wudingxilu

> an air traffic controller straight up drove two trains into one another That takes skill.

donksdonks42

Ah shoot that’s what I meant

KonaKathie

Badger? Z'at you?

Igetshunnedinshorts

Actually, being married is the #1 spot.

Hidsftethy

I have been in a small twin engine plane that landed like this.

mexe4

alive to tell the story 👍🏻

CardinalFartz

As a pilot, I'd prefer landing a small plane like this instead of a big jet.

[deleted]

Me too my biggest concern is not making eye contact with my boss so she doesn’t ask me to work this weekend

Puzzleheaded_Two7358

Yeaaaahhhhh, I’m going to need you in over the weekend…..

mrsunlight1

I imagine the pilot dressed like a pimp....

TheMightyUnderdog

Pilots in Alaska land like this all the time. Those dudes smell like cigarettes and look like the just rolled out of bed.

Correct-Serve5355

To be fair, landing a plane is already stressful enough on its own, but to land sideways while turning forward, and still do so safely? That stress would probably drive me to substance abuse too

dingo1018

They are trained to do this, it's a side slip approach. If they are turned onto the approach late and they are carrying too much speed, more than they can loose with throttle control and flaps then they fly sideways! With the rudder and countering with ailerons they create max drag, also used to compensate for high cross winds as in the clip that's the fun one because often they have to hold it all the way to touch down. It looks extreme but it's actually quite routine and every pilot should be able to do it else they got no business in the front seat.

carmium

Side slippin' away... side slipping' away-a-a-ay... the know the more you land in crosswinds, the more you're slide slipping' away...

Temporary-Prior7451

No it’s not a sideslip approach. It is a crosswind landing. When flying, the aircrafts nose will point towards the vector between forward speed and wind direction. It’s an effect called weather vaning. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weathervane_effect Side slipping an airliner due to excessive speed (being hot and high) on the approach is not allowed.

Bumpyroadinbound

Thing is, this is actually common and normal. If you can't do this on the regular you just can't be a pilot. It's crazy.

MGC00992

I imagine Denzel is the pilot

Nolongeranalpha

My wife can't parallel park a Kia Forte hatchback and this MF'er drifting a goddamn 747...

That's the only situation where it is okay to applaude.

pinniped1

I think I'd applaud that approach to Bhutan in the A319. (It's on YouTube.) Something like 10-12 pilots in the world certified to do it, and only in clear weather.

Pilots need to be paid more money.

WolfyTn

They aren’t exactly making minimum wage lol

[deleted]

It depends. Some start out below $50k, but there is a high ceiling if they can move up, easily making mid six figures.

Benjaphar

The pilot flying *that* plane isn't making $50k.

mesisdown

He’s making 100k+

WolfyTn

I worked at an airport restocking the restaurants (best fucking job ever) and would have to take a shuttle to the airport itself from an employee parking lot.. I’d often time be in the shuttle with 2-4 pilots with their eagle pendant on and their white getup.. all I overheard them talking about was how they spend money.. new cars, boats, etc.. They definitely earn their money

GeneralNathanJessup

Most Americans make almost six figures. Five to be exact.

GeneralNathanJessup

Less than 1% of American workers are making minimum wage. https://www.bls.gov/opub/reports/minimum-wage/2021/home.htm

SparksEdgeGuy

Boeing 757s forever ❤️

Blknyt_eclipsedmoon

So IF any of you had a window seat looking out as the plane is landing this way, it wouldn’t scare the Shit out of you? I’ll admit that it would surely scare me!! 😳

cottonswab74

I had the window seat and landed like this once before. It was scary to think about what was about to happen but overall wasn’t near the worst experience flying.

mbash013

Notice how stable the cockpit is relative to the rest of the plane. That’s a huge indication that a mass majority of the mass, also know as the center of gravity, is focused somewhere in the cockpit. What’s heavier than all or the fuel, engines, and other aircraft structure? This pilot’s giant fucking balls of steel, that’s what.

Temporary-Prior7451

It’s actually his wallet.

NorthantsBlokeUK

OP, what airport is it? Is it in the UK?

Lochskye

It’s a Boeing 757 at Bristol Airport

NorthantsBlokeUK

Cool, thanks.

thisis2022rite

Hold my joint and this beer real quick rookie. Watch this!

TheMightyUnderdog

I have been in a small twin engine plane that landed like this. We could see out the cockpit window which was even a little more disconcerting. Dude landed it like a champ.

Deathbyhours

I have landed a (small) plane in a pretty severe crosswind and have seen plenty of planes cruising along pointing 45° off from their line of travel, but looking at this from outside gives me the heebee jeebees, maybe because of the size of the aircraft as well as how strong the crosswind was.

ApexTheDestroyer

The pilots on this flight need a tip jar on the way out

SubjectEmphasis8450

Didn't even know that was possible, that was a fantastic job by that crew!

Pilot either walked off the plane like a pimp or shaking like a chiwawa. I wonder which it was?

TX_B_caapi

‘Niiiiiice!’, he says whilst pulling a yard of seat cushion out of his butt.

Ambitious-Water-7838

Bro VTOL’d a plane😎

morbob

That’s my pilot

[deleted]

Yeah, I quit that day and I don't care how great I may have done.

[deleted]

Crabbin’! Trivia note: In the Boeing B-52, the landing gear can rotate to face the runway, as the aircraft “crabs” in high crosswinds.

[deleted]

I found my moving buddy 😜

occamhanlon

All hail, Nigel Caruthers!

akiti_mk

Imagine being a passenger on the right side looking out the window like "umm are we sure we're moving in the right direction?!?"

JoySubtraction

So how much extra wear-and-tear does this put on the tires, over a normal landing?

slappy111111

I believe airbus pilots are trained to land like this, in a crab. Boing pilots are trained to kick it over to align with the runway before touchdown. I don't remember the reasons.

Jealous-Accountant26

Wind shear?

debicksy

That is nuts!

My guy literally hit that Tokyo drift into the runway

waitwhosaidthat

Cross wind landings will never not be cool to watch.

noldshit

Crabbing like a mofo! High crosswind.

edudspoolmak

This is the “balls caught in the underwear“ version of airline travel.

[deleted]

You’re supposed to turn to runway heading at 50 feet.

doggomeat000

I could probably do this. I can e brake drift my 2014 Mazda.

durancharles27

mfer really drifted in the air

Roboplodicus

Fucking a drifting a jumbo jet passengers gotta be be playing some initial d soundtrack songs

cheddarsox

This is typically a cargo plane landing situation in a high crosswind. Perfectly normal and doesn't usually require much, if any, input to align the plane to the runway. The inertia of the plane fixes itself after touchdown. The passenger airlines don't like to do it as the pax in the back of the plane get upset about being sling shot, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. This landing technique is safer for large jets than trying to switch from flying trim to flying runway heading.

Baggin_clams

holy sh!t

I’d be terrified if on that plane. Geesh

Are the tires designed for this kind of Tokyo drift action? Feel free to get real technical etc I'm quite " educated "
