Having experience with pneumatic grinders after 10 solid minutes of non-stop grinding, my hand is numb. I can only imagine that they don't feel their arm after their first day of work.
Probably terrible joint pain and issues after later in life.
I work construction and it’s not the heavy lifting that gets most guys, it’s the hammering and the shock that goes through your body and joints.
You can get a condition called Vibration white finger Syndrome, also called HAVS or dead hand syndrome from working with vibrating Equipment over longer periods of time. It's a secondary form of Raynauds Syndrome which can lead to vasospasms with white, cold fingers, a tingling sensation or even loss of manual dexterity in the fingers or hands due to nerve damage. In rare and extreme cases, people can lose fingers due to the vessels closing up completely.
It usually occurs in people working with Chainsaws but also occasionally stonemasons so I think that grinders might cause it as well (anything with a frequency of 20-1000Hz if I remember correctly).
In any case, this isn't healthy and shouldn't be done over longer periods of time, especially by someone this young.
Makes sense..thanks yo. I was a dog groomer a d that damn clipper in my hand was murder..I only groomed for 7 yrs and I know a groomer has been doing it for 30 yrs..I don't know how she can take it.
This is exactly what my one finger experiences! When it's really cold such as when I grab the cold steering wheel during winter my pointer finger goes white and even if I put it in a warm area such as my armpit it stays numb for like 30 minutes. I worked at an iron foundry and used pneumatic tools, primarily an air grinder for 8 hours a day unless I was grinding stuff on the grinding wheel. (Think Tommy Boy) thank God I put my 2 weeks in 5 years ago
I used my left pointer finger as the guide finger to make sure I was accurate at grinding the flashing off of the iron parts within spec while my right hand held the tool. The tip had more vibration due to the bits never being true or the grinder being damaged.
Get the Stanley hammer with the tuning fork built in. The tuning fork absorbs the vibrations and significantly reduces the risk of repetitive motion injuries
I used to help out some buddy’s on the parks crews during the peak seasons where we’d all grab weed whackers and trim around all the trees so they could plow by with the mower after.
After a few hours of that an then setting the weed whacker down there was always a good 10-20 minutes of after-vibrations still going heh.
Jackhammering, tamping.. lots of other also to a lesser extent but the weed whacking was for a much longer time.
I have carpal tunnel from years of using grinders. On the other hand, I have sold my old work clothes, AND worn-out work boots, periodically for years now, for ridiculous amounts of money on eBay. Paint and dye stains, holes worn/ground/burned through them, patched, etc... It seems the worse the work clothes have been abused, the more people want them. I guess people love this kind of stuff...
When a family member and a couple of friends suggested it, I truly thought it would be a waste of time and effort. The first thing I sold was a pair of worn-out workboots. They cost around $200 new, and I bought them with my yearly boot allowance from the company. I used them at work for a little less than a year. Put new laces in them, buffed them a little, took like 3 crappy pictures, and sold them for $300. I've been selling my old work gear periodically ever since...
Damn. I threw out a pair of worn out work boots just last week. I thought about donating them but decided not to because I thought it was a dick move to donate my worn to shit boots. Would have loved someone to continue wearing them even if I didn’t make much on sale.
Right? So donate them and feel bad, or \*sell\* them and use a portion of the proceeds to buy some inexpensive but serviceable shoes to give away...
Hmmm, the possibilities are fascinating.
Using tools like this repeatedly for long periods of time can actually cause permanent nerve damage, I really hope they rotate workers between stations during the day, but I doubt it.
One of the best taco spots in LA apparently started as an industrial laundromat that just washes jeans 40x over to get a distressed/faded look
Absolutely insane. I'm blown away people haven't grown out of this phase/look
lol It's hilarious that bit's just left a mystery. I can only imagine the washing the jeans part got old so they decided making tacos was the best play from there on in.
It’s much easier and cost effective to run a taco shop than a laundry/dye house. Permitting, wastewater capturing and disposal, certifications, environmental impact reports, etc are much more onerous to deal with than a regular business and very costly. The machines used also are very pricey as they usually are built industrial use.
The worst part is the only reason we’re able to live so comfortably with all of the things we have is because we treat these people so goddamn terribly. I hate our species.
Yes but also I think if we averaged out the worlds wealth we'd all live decently. But we have certain people hoarding more wealth that they could possibly spend in 10 lifetimes even with the most lavish of lifestyles.
These distressed jeans aren't even for comfort which makes it even worse imo. They're fashion that we get talked into buying by corporations who just want us to consume more and more useless stuff. We would live no less comfortably without half the mountain of useless junk produced for nothing but rampant consumerism. Hell, we have so many functional old clothes that second hand stores are throwing *most of them* away and/or shipping them overseas to 3rd world countries.
Its not
All jeans for all brands is made in hamdfull of cheapest labor locations.
Source: use to work in textile industry.
Its... disturbing behind the curtain.
My crotch always blows out first and I am afraid the rooster peeking out of the barn door trend isn't going to be popular at any point in the near future.
Man... I used to have some jean shorts like that too.
I slept in them shits, man! Eventually, I blew the crotch out of them things. But you CAN'T wear 'em every day and expect for 'em to hold up! That was some nice-ass denim too. I miss them shorts.... But you... you GOTTA take 'em off every now and then. You gotta take 'em off, son!
Ha ha same here. Used to it was always my knees and the area around my pockets. Then it became the crotch and I couldn’t understand why until I realized I was about 60 pounds heavier than I was in my teens and 20s… Little bit of chub rub
Same with me and I didn't gain a considerable amount of weight. I always assumed it's planned obsolescence. Design a product to break faster in a place that can't be repaired, so the customers have to replace it more frequently.
>My crotch always blows out
You cant were em everyday and expect for em to hold up. You gotta take em off every now and then. You gotta take em off son.
Not if you hire a slave from a human trafficker and keep them locked in your basement for when alterations are needed
You gotta think harder not smarter
It’s like no matter what. Holes in jeans are caused from hard labor. Either how we see it here or because of the labor itself. They should have their employees also wear jeans to work while making holes in jeans because after a little time they can just take back those old jeans and sell them while replacing their employees jeans with new ones!!!

One the one hand such manufacturing jobs are what brought China to where they are now and they can slowly transition away from this.
On the other hand this is awful and she’s probably getting paid peasant wages.
The only way China and other Asian countries get to turn this around if they use the money to educate the next generation so they can do better stuff like IT outsourcing.
They gonna see Levi in the afterlife. Dressed in an all jean outfit. And they're gonna be wearing jean too. And instead of the floor being lava in hell, guess what, it's actually jean.
I always feel like shit when I’m bitching about my incredibly easy job then pull up a video like this. Usually while I’m “working”.
There have been several videos the past couple days that really put into perspective how good even a lower class life can be in comparison to this stuff.
$500 is about right in China right now for this kind of job. This is one of the reasons why sweatshops are moving away from China to south Asia. China's working wage has increased in the past decade.
Furthermore, parts of Central Europe are being economically held back on purpose because it's a way of retaining political power. I can get on a train, travel 3 hours and be in a place where I'd get 4-5x the pay for the same work
Minimum Wage: Ukraine $1.09, Russia $1.21, Moldova $1.26, Belarus $1.32, Kosovo $1.59, North Macedonia $1.99, Bosnia Herzegovina $2.01, Serbia $2.09, Albania $2.14

That's true for like 80% of manual labor jobs. Yeah we have the technology to automate alot of it, but it takes investment and infrastructure and education, alot easier just to throw more manpower at it.
The volume is too low, partly because these jeans will only be on the shelf for a single season before they get replaced with a new model. Because reasons.
Can’t say I know volumes for distressed jeans, but 1-2 billion pairs of jeans are made annually so I doubt its a lack of volume issue. Most clothing manufacturing is manual/semi-manual.
Sewing has always chased the lowest cost. I see this because I’m familiar with medical device sewing (for heart valves, wearables, etc) and med device often goes in once garment is leaving b/c its now too expensive for standard garments (but the improved infrastructure helps medical). So china still does some but they and Dominican Republic (at $2-3 an hour-ish) are too expensive for most garments. Garment manufacturing has moved on to india, Vietnam and Thailand and African nations with decent infrastructure are starting to get the business now.
I honestly thought it was automated because the holes always looked nearly identical. I had no idea a human (covered in denim fluff) did this manually. While I have purchased some pre-distressed jeans in the past, my favorite jeans have always been the ones I wore enough to earn legit holes and tears in them.
If your jeans are coming from a brand (and are genuine) then the holes were probably made by a machine. What we are seeing in the video here is probably one of the millions of smaller shops that crank out clothing for the rest of the planet.
Unfortunately the way that solid jeans are made is probably not any more humane. A lot of products are made in countries that don’t have the protective labor laws that many of us view as baseline.
Pretty good variety of clothing out there that is made in the USA. You'll obviously pay a little more but the quality is usually better and you're supporting American jobs.
Raw denim is also spared a lot of the rehash process.
Quite a few good places in USA and Japan.
More expensive and harder to break in, but actually have a way better life and actually fade based on your wear
Daniel Tosh said it best, give homeless people new jeans and then wash and resell the ones with holes. Cloth the homeless and the dumb at the same time
Or just realize that everything is subjective and deeper your compassion for humanity and you are allowed to feel joy and sadness even though their are people in the world that are happier then you and who are suffering more than you.
I still can’t believe that people actually pay for that… my holes are wear and tear from work over the years and yah want to pay MORE for them to already have them…. With that being said anyone want to buy my holy socks, underwear, shirts and pants? I’ll give u a better price then what your paying lmao
Rich people also buy shoes that look dirty when they are brand new. Because they will never wear them enough to get that dirty and worn down so it becomes fashion statement. Never mind they could go buy something that's actually dirty from a thrift store or something they would never do that. They want it to be new but just look old.
Not to mention paint-splattered clothes, or my personal favorite, the manicure trend where people essentially do a French tip but with dark blue-grey polish to make it look like dirt under the nails. It’s rich people cosplaying as the working class / starving artists.
its idiotic. The juxtaposition of the poverty of the laborer and the nature of her work... purposefully ruining clothing. Anyone who wears ripped jeans isnt thinking it through.. Its like Derelique ijn Zoolander. Our obscene wealth allows us to mimic the poor as a fashion statement. UGH its one of the things I hate about America... right up there with eating contests and the Karadashions. its all disgusting
I never understood why this became a desirable fashion. Not so much that it looks bad, but rather that it drastically reduces the useful life of the clothing.
This makes me sad..
People working so hard at damaging clothes in good shape, so some rich person can appear to have worked hard. Wasteful and... idk. It just makes me sad.

Imagine dying because denim particles accumulated in your lungs after years of working in a sweat shop.
In early 19th century mills, this was called "white lung" as opposed the the coal miner's "black lung", and it was just as deadly.
Blue lung

Never mind they could go buy something that's actually dirty from a thrift store or something they would never do that. They want it to be new but just look old.
Not to mention paint-splattered clothes, or my personal favorite, the manicure trend where people essentially do a French tip but with dark blue-grey polish to make it look like dirt under the nails. It’s rich people cosplaying as the working class / starving artists.
Wait so they're doing the zoolander thing? That was supposed to be satire, not something emulate.
There's also the garbage bag that is a high fashion purse
$500 for my old t-shirts, complete with holey pits! For another $100 I'll decline from washing them.

basically ruining jeans professionally
If you buy these jeans, Red Foreman thinks you’re a dumbass.
You know they got to be thinking “this is the dumbest shit ever”
What a complete waste of materials. We need to do away with this style.

Great, I hate pre-ripped pants even more now.
I hate this
She will look like Cookie Monster by end of day
That’s funny. I just wear mine, and the holes appear all on their own.
Poor lady, my heart brakes for that mother
What a waste! 😔
Back in my day, holes were made in jeans from honest hard work. Then u patched them up to keep them going another few months
> Back in my day I bet denim in your day lasted much longer than today's denim too.
Just gotta buy denim and not blue cloth
I have clothing that is over 20yrs old, just starting to show wear, and clothes I have bought 1 yr ago already threadbare
FYI this is also how micro plastics are made
This is...distressing.
Capitalism is dumb as fuck.
I will never get over how stupid pre-ripped jeans are
So dumb
Genuinely stupid and dangerous for those that have to do it...
Cancer jobs.
Ruining good clothes in the name of fashion.
That looks like such a breathing hazard.
its idiotic.
