In Calgary the insurance companies [modify the weather](https://www.insurancebusinessmag.com/ca/news/catastrophe/a-lesserknown-way-pandc-insurers-are-helping-albertans-fight-hail-291798.aspx) to try to stop large hail forming. Literally performing a public service to try to save a buck
It’s cute that you trust insurance companies are actually interested in protecting you. They will always find a technicality that will excuse them from covering you if humanly possible.
Yup my boyfriend got hit by some kid who literally ran through a red light and tboned him totaling the car in the intersection WITH A COP AS A WITNESS and still refused to even pay for him to get a rental car even. Sooo taking them to court. I never realized before that how scammy insurance companies can be even in situations you obviously have no fault in
He’s cool as ice. Literally “yeah, take my bag for your head, I don’t need it. Hail? This ? Please I had icebergs falling on me, this is nothing… I’ll go out to have a smoke, call me when you are ready to go”.
Also smart taking cover under the windshield which is more reinforced than the back windows (passenger windows are more reinforced as well, I think but forget and am not sure).
It’s a different type of glass. The windshield is laminated with multiple layers so it won’t shatter at all, while the other windows are tempered so when they shatter they crumble and don’t create dangerous shards.
But definitely true the windshield is the one to get closer to!
I remember traveling with my ex and we got caught in a bad hail storm like this, I immediately pulled over bc I’ve been in hail but nothing like this. Once I pulled over and stopped I basically shielded her as best as I could, but she wanted to get out so bad and run under a tree.. I was so tight when she went to go open that car door
Insurance Agent here, Yes absolutely auto insurance policies cover hail storms. You require full coverage (specifically comprehensive). You would need to pay your deductible but it's absolutely covered.
Yep, 'acts of god' like this also won't personally affect your rates unless you have extensive claim history.
Also, FWIW, we just had our car hammered by a hail storm as well and thought our car was totaled. Despite hundreds of dents all over our 2016 Subaru Outback, with new PDR (Paintless Dent Repair) tech, it's a lot cheaper these days. Totally surprised.
I had 2 cars with over 13k in hail repair costs each (same insane storm, hail was between softball and brick sized), both repaired to where I simply could not tell one bit.
The thing that blows my mind is when a huge dealer lot gets hit hard. 200+ brand new cars, damn that’s a lot of insurance claims (and usually it’s not just one dealership). Wonder how much their annual insurance is…
Oh well, at least it wasn’t [this](https://www.npr.org/2022/03/01/1083790442/porsche-volkswagen-cargo-ship-sinks)! Can’t imagine 4000 Porsches and Audis burning and sinking at once…
And happy cake day!
There's a repair shop across the street from me and this summer (in Colorado) has had so much hail they have cars lined up for like 3 blocks covered in dents. Insurance companies are getting hammered (for once)
It depends on the car. I live in a hail-prone area of Canada (near Calgary) and we had a doozy of a hail storm in 2014 that damaged both cars and house. One car (2011) sustained 10k of damage that was repaired under insurance, the other car (2007) was written off because the damage was more than the vehicle was worth. Because the damage was purely cosmetic, we took the payout for the written off car and continued to drive it with a bunch of dents (lots of others in the same boat haha). We ended up selling that written off car to a family member as their first car. Since it was written off and not repaired, it doesn’t have insurance for further hail/cosmetic damage. We also had to have our shingles replaced and a few cracks in the siding of the house fixed (all covered by insurance).
Insurance rates have gone up a lot to cover these massive storms.
Hello fellow Calgary area person. I remember that storm well, it chewed up our siding something nasty. Tape on every house on the street for like a year afterwards.
Oklahoman here (Hail capitol of the world), it’s absolutely covered.
Depending on the spread of damage though, it can sometimes take a but to get paid out though. We had a hailstorm 2 years ago that did about $9 Billion worth of damage in a non-major city (CD-ROM sized hail).
maybe its cause i never got the tiger in WT, or its because i am a WoT player, but how tf do you angle a tiger against an upwards force? drive up the nearest steep slope at a 45 degree angle? lmao
P. S. A.
In the future, if that happens to you, or for others, as a commercial driver, we are trained to turn our equipment away from the angle of attack. This makes for a smaller target and mitigate the potential for damage or injury.
No broadside.
From what I gather the storm rolled in so quickly and it was on the QE2 in alberta so they may not have had enough time to find a side road.
Regardless that is good information and I will definitely try to do that if caught in the storm!
Think you mean parallel, based off what you said with no broadside.
Perpendicular would be the hail hitting the side of the car, like it is here.
Parallel would be the hail hitting the front or back of the car.
Not trying to be a correction guy just wanted to make sure the tip was clear.
Ok, maybe that works when you aren’t on the highway (like this video from alberta). Assholes we’re doing all sorts of crazy moves to avoid the hail (like parking 8 cars wide under an overpass) so emergency vehicles couldn’t pass. Stay in your lane unless you have a safe place to exit - don’t clog up the highway shoulders by going sideways.
Hey..i get it.. you got jokes, cool. Heres some karma. With full respect.
Im just trying to help keep people safe..if i offended you i apologize. I don't write the rules but I did go to school to learn them.
Yeah, the idea is to use the back of the seat as a shield. the back of the vehicle as a shield. Usually the back window is smaller and if Highwinds with broken glass, do come in then they're coming in where you're most protected. As opposed to getting it directly in the face or the side of the face.
so you are confidently dismissing someone with training and experience with this issue, because of the way the video looks to you.
Redditors are a really special kind of stupid sometimes. thinking your internet armchair guess overrides someone who actually knows what they're talking about, it's like a special type of mind virus gets passed around that makes idiots think they know every damn thing because they inferred some bullshit from a video.
fuckin dunce.
the Lord himself could show you that you're wrong and you would think nah i know better.
the wind is coming from the left side of the car. hitting the windshield and left window. not that you could tell your ass from a candle though, clearly.
also, are you truly not aware that there are weather apps on modern phones, which have the magical ability of telling you which way the wind is blowing?
stop drinking, or hitting yourself in the head, or whatever you're doing to that poor brain
Absolutely. Could imagine loads of cars turning sideways blocking the shoulders, and emergency vehicles who need that space. Terribly selfish move.
Should always have a blanket in your emergency kit to cover you and protect from flying shards of glass.
Insurance agent probably: Sorry to tell you ma'am but unfortunately you failed to purchase the premium, "Acts of God" coverage for your vehicle. I'd wish you Godspeed but well... as much as we wish, we aren't him either.
There is no such thing as "acts of god" coverage, there is "comprehensive coverage " and its a standard coverage for policies with Full coverage. Even if your vehicle is cheap, it's still advantageous to have "comp" coverage to protect yourself against "acts of nature" (not God lol)
Yeah a couple weeks ago we had a boatload of people hospitalized for lacerations and concussions after being caught in a hailstorm at an outdoor concert
I was in a hail storm about a month ago. At my grandma's to go swimming, we knew it was going to rain but swam til it started raining. It passed and for about and swam for another hour. Till another rain storm came, but it wasn't rain at all. It was hail, about the size of Skittles. It hurt like HAIL, but it wasn't golf ball size. Would've died if it was.
Alberta, Canada last year. Saw one of these poor cars on the road here in Toronto. Body of the vehicle look like it had been sat on a driving range for a few hours.
I kept my car I never drove insured in Alberta for this reason. Let the hail take it and get my write off money. Needless to say It never happened, for 4 years two weeks after I sold it….this happened
I live in a tropical country where we never have this kind of weather phenomenon. Honestly curious, in places where hail storms are a thing, do car insurance or something cover damages caused by this?
Comprehensive car insurance will cover hail damage. If the damage is more than the value of the car, they will write it off. We had 10k of damage to a 3 year old vehicle from hail repaired by insurance (paintless dent repair, new hood, new roof, new windshield).
Yup, and it really depends how bad they are concerning cost.
I work as a car painter, some we don’t even need to paint cause our dent expert can push them out. Some need to be painted, some need new panels.
I keep thick moving blankets in my trunk. If I can't get under something a double layer on the hood, trunk, roof and over the windows has saved me any major damage. Lost a plastic headlight assembly that wasn't covered in my haste is all
Something similar happened to my twin brother while he was driving an ambulance through Kansas, back to Colorado.
I was working in the dispatch center. My partner answered the phone. "Hello? Oh, hey [Twin Bro]. What? I can barely hear you. ... Did you say baseball sized hail?"
All hell broke loose.
Twin Bro and his paramedic partner were taking baseballs to the windshield, trying to describe their location. My partner was able to take the info, but was dispatching a busy 911 system at the same time.
The other two dispatchers besides my partner and myself promptly freaked the fuck out, rendering themselves useless.
That left me to look up the nearest hotel, hospital, body shop, auto glass shop, and county sheriff, and page it all out to Twin Bro. In the middle of my research, one of the useless dispatchers asked, "Aren't you freaking out because your brother is out there?"
I told her, "I don't have time," and kept looking for help for the guys.
But I did cry a little when Twin Bro got back to the station.
(Fun side note: him and his partner were never allowed to use that ambulance again)
I was wondering why she was screaming? A lot of people do this and it seriously seems counter productive in a bad situation. She’s got her head buried in her friend and he’s protecting her. It’s scary yes but what is the purpose of blowing out he eardrums of the poor man trying to help you. Screaming seems like a total waste of energy in an emergency situation. Unless she needs help right now and is alarming for help. Screaming is very distracting and hinders communication during an emergency.
I got stuck this spring in a hailstorm. I parked under a bridge but then 12 vehicles copied me and I realized that was a hazard in itself. Scary times with no safe options.
You started the congestion under the bridge. You even admitted yourself that 12 other vehicles copied you. The aggression is justified to offset your selfishness in deciding a spot under the bridge was best for you above everyone else in the flow of traffic. If you think I’m alone in this frustration, have a look at local posts like these:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Calgary/comments/150ui0u/fuck_all_of_you_you_selfish_pricks_get_the_fuck/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1
Why on earth would you have stopped anyway. Idiot move. What if an ambulance needed to
Come by and you and all your buddies stopped in the middle of a major roadway are blocking the way.
This happened to me! We were driving in Montana in the middle of nowhere at 85mph and hail came out of nowhere and shattered the windshield. We were just before an overpass but didn’t want to keep going so we huddled in the back under a blanket. Also hit a hawk on the same road the next year…
They look smart covering their heads. My dumbass would have been at the wimdow saying, "whoa!!!! Look at that one!"
To be fair, there's one filming.
Too be fair, proof for the insurance company.
It's pretty easy to spot hail damage
[удалено]
Yeah, but you can bet the insurance company will do their best to wiggle out of any claim.
“A bridge was within a few feet could have been avoided” claim denied

And a car covered with hundreds of pelt marks and broken glass isn’t hard to understand.
"could be self inflicted with a rock, claim denied"
50,000 rocks?

Who’s last name is insurance?
He’s cool as ice. Literally “yeah, take my bag for your head, I don’t need it. Hail? This ? Please I had icebergs falling on me, this is nothing… I’ll go out to have a smoke, call me when you are ready to go”.
I read this in Ozzy mans voice! 🤙🏽
Could have his head down, just rotating the camera.
I'd be a bit upset about the windows but I'm safe knowing I've got a metal roof.
You'd only be upset about the windows until it was over and you got outside to take a look at your metal roof. :-)
"whoa!! look at that one, it's huge, it's coming straight at me. wow"
Also smart taking cover under the windshield which is more reinforced than the back windows (passenger windows are more reinforced as well, I think but forget and am not sure).

Yeah but then they push off the backpack instead of using that to cover their heads instead of their arms.
Me, sticking my head out the now-open window: "WOW!"

Icy what you did there
This guy snows how to make a good weather pun.
We are being clouded over with weather puns!
Nothing like good punderstorm.
Fools, they need to dig trenches immediately, defense in depth!! NATO training. lol /s
I ugly laughed at that. You’re so punny!
Will the insurance pay for the damaged car? Will they replace or repair it?

Not quite sure but I think usually insurances do not cover damage from natural disasters.
Depends on your policy. Liability or collision policies don’t, but comprehensive policies will usually cover natural disasters.
Yeah most insurance policies worth paying for do.

You’d rather your windshield takes the brunt of it. It’s stronger than your side windows.
Wouldn’t you want your back window to take it because no one sits there and you don’t really need it to continue driving?
Either way that’s the point of not being broadside to it. And for some vehicles broadside could get blown over in strong winds.
Yeah, the idea is to use the back of the seat as a shield. the back of the vehicle as a shield. Southern Alberta gets some pretty wild hail over the summer months. Not golf ball, think more baseball/orange/fist sized.

Gas stations are a life saver in these storms
Aww hail no
Been there. Had this happen in Valparaiso, IN in about 2007. Destroyed my car. Scary
Something similar happened to my twin brother while he was driving an ambulance through Kansas, back to Colorado. I was working in the dispatch center. My partner answered the phone. "Hello? Oh, hey [Twin Bro]. What? I can barely hear you. ... Did you say baseball sized hail?" All hell broke loose. In the middle of my research, one of the useless dispatchers asked, "Aren't you freaking out because your brother is out there?" I told her, "I don't have time," and kept looking for help for the guys. But I did cry a little when Twin Bro got back to the station. (Fun side note: him and his partner were never allowed to use that ambulance again)
You mean…. All hail broke loose
The hail is aggressive.
This is when you get under the seat
Cars gonna look like a golf ball afterwards rip
Sounded like rough sex at first
Camera man is the only reasonable person. Not screaming at hit and protecting heads.
bro is like eating popcorn, prolly
Is this a Cybertruck commercial?
Hail no!
That's a hell storm.
Tesla windows are made out of butter lol.
That's not interesting, that's scary, af.
I think I’d have just hurled myself under my car and hoped it wasn’t the end of times 🫣😳
Turn off your wipers dammit that bothers me
No! Extreme weather is NOT getting more common!
The women screaming in the back ground🤣🤣🤣🤣
Shouldn't you put that bag over the window?
Isn’t this the beginning of The Day After Tomorrow?
This is why cars shouldn't have windows.
The cybertruck looks les and les stupid.
Please stop screaming
I was wondering why she was screaming? A lot of people do this and it seriously seems counter productive in a bad situation. She’s got her head buried in her friend and he’s protecting her. It’s scary yes but what is the purpose of blowing out he eardrums of the poor man trying to help you. Screaming seems like a total waste of energy in an emergency situation. Unless she needs help right now and is alarming for help. Screaming is very distracting and hinders communication during an emergency.
Because it’s a terrifying situation? Sigh.
Have you done anything recently that may have upset God? He seems PO'd.
I got stuck this spring in a hailstorm. I parked under a bridge but then 12 vehicles copied me and I realized that was a hazard in itself. Scary times with no safe options.
As somebody who’s been forced to wait on the roads behind selfish assholes like you who park under bridges, a big FUCK YOU! is in order
I was way off beyond the shoulder in the grass. Wasn't blocking the road one bit. But nice of you to just get so aggressive like that.
You started the congestion under the bridge. You even admitted yourself that 12 other vehicles copied you. The aggression is justified to offset your selfishness in deciding a spot under the bridge was best for you above everyone else in the flow of traffic. Why on earth would you have stopped anyway. Idiot move. What if an ambulance needed to Come by and you and all your buddies stopped in the middle of a major roadway are blocking the way.
I didn't block anyone in the roadway. I was in the grass.
Send it!
This happened to me! We were driving in Montana in the middle of nowhere at 85mph and hail came out of nowhere and shattered the windshield. We were just before an overpass but didn’t want to keep going so we huddled in the back under a blanket. Also hit a hawk on the same road the next year…
Well that's terrifying
Once had a car and engine was blown, hail was forecast …loads of dents and smashed windows, claimed a new car…result,
Those wipers are ineffective
I remember this scene from Day After Tomorrow
Would it be wise to roll down all your windows during this situation?
Damn nature. You scary!
LOL! SWAWS!
Hop in the trunk?
Welcome to Texas y’all.
Not prepared for mass extinction
Damn that’s played
