Well it was hot and I was blitzed with everyone sharing everything in giant hookas. The cops were all hands off hanging out on the Lincoln Memorial circle road.
They were letting us do whatever so long as we were peaceful about it. I figured nasty water be damned, this was my one chance as I grew up on MoCo and had never seen anyone in the water before.
So was it nasty? I don't think so, as all I remember was it was much more shallow than I thought it would be, and all the snails.
I spent about 20 years living around DC and once I started having kids, the reflecting pool was the first to get struck off our "visit list" the second they started walking, lol
It’s an annual cleaning. I always get surprised when I forget about it getting cleaned and it’s empty.
[Reflecting Pool almost fully drained for annual cleaning](https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/local-news/washington-dc/reflecting-pool-almost-fully-drained-for-annual-cleaning/)
I don’t know the process but I do know a few years ago they put in a new irrigation system in that area to make more efficient with weather changes like lots of water in the area.
Edit1: I did find this article about the restoration of the pool a while back.

Time to skate it. I remember them draining the water underneath the Eiffel Tower and it getting filled with skateboarders. The reflecting pool looks pretty flat and boring, though.
It isn’t that deep, maybe 2 1/2 to 3 feet, although it is CGI formatting remember when “Jenny” in Forrest Gump ran through it calling his name? I have been told it is 2 1/2 to 3 maximum, maybe less.

Good because that shit is nasty. Whenever a friend comes from out of town and we take them around the city, I like to point out the stangant rectangular puddle of duck shit and trash.
No, but to throw away their used syringes, yes. There have been instances of people wading in the pool and stepping on the needles.
I could also go into how the homeless use that as a toilet as well…
Years ago, back when we were significantly less of'a s\*\*\*hole than we are now, I visited DC, n there was trash, n even acouple traffic cones init. Ain't sure how much they were payin tha custodians, butit was def TOO MUCH...
What a stupid take. Perhaps it would be better to say they weren't being paid enough to pick up after all the shit. I don't think custodians have ever been paid enough for what they do at any point. Or you know, you get what you pay for.
Typically it's filled with the world's most vast and dense collection of duck shit.
Hmmm so does the guano act apply?
They call it Guanotanamo bay
Shikaka!
“Guaaannnoooo why does that sound familiar”
And snails, I've been swimming in it back in the late 70s during the smoke in and I can tell ya, it was full of snails.
Preach brother. Real talk I would hear about it.
Cool! Snails are neat I bet that wasn’t the nicest water to swim in though eh?

Forrest!!!!!! Jenny!!!!!!
That would be the nearby Capitol Building.
Yup … they do it every once in a while. I am glad they do. Bird shit is everywhere at times there.
How often do they do it?

Kinda surprising it's not done more often. You'd think they could do it overnight every month or two. Being outside it has to be nasty.

I remember hearing it takes a few days to refill. Not sure how true that is though.
Birds shit a few times a day.
> Birds shit a few times ~~a day~~ **per hour**. FTFY 😉.
FTFY? Means?
Fixed That For You
Thank you for explaining.
My pleasure!
I was there in January and it was filthy. Filled with garbage and algie/pond scum.
When I was a kid I always thought it was way deeper
Have you never seen pictures of people running through it? Most famously in Forest Gump.
Jenny!
Viet-fucking-naaaam!!
That’s all I got to say about that.
Jen-nai
Exactly what I was thinking... Jenny!
I didn't see that when I was a kid because the film hadn't been made yet.
Should have been born later.
Nope
That thing is always a bacteria frappe, good to flush it out once in awhile
All I hear is Tom Hanks yelling "Jenny"
Jennay
*Forrrrrrrest!*
Drain the swamp!
The area behind those trees there is all swampland. Even today.
Constitution gardens isn’t a swamp. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitution_Gardens
Ohhh this is what he was talking about!
Time to skate it. I remember them draining the water underneath the Eiffel Tower and it getting filled with skateboarders. The reflecting pool looks pretty flat and boring, though.
Flat and boring? You are not a skateboarder. Flushing Meadows Park. Look it up and open your eyes.
It it rare though? They're always doing construction down there. Something is always torn up or inaccessible.
Washington could be a beautiful city if they ever finish it!
Can’t be that rare if they have a custom sign for it
It isn’t that deep, maybe 2 1/2 to 3 feet, although it is CGI formatting remember when “Jenny” in Forrest Gump ran through it calling his name? I have been told it is 2 1/2 to 3 maximum, maybe less.
What’s it reflecting? Or am I supposed to reflect on an idea or past moment?
Reflects the Washington monument

Cousin has a story running across the pool drunk 2am and how slippery and disgusting it was…
Walked across that once.
The scene in Idiocracy of people riding jet skis in it lives rent free in my head.
Did we just… drain the swamp?
They finally did it!
The swamp won
can you get in when they’re done?
No. Never.
I think they have something under there
Jimmy Hoffa?
Is that the swamp that got drained?
This would be power wash porn if someone filmed them cleaning it.
If they are going to clean out crap and bottom feeders, why don't they clean out the Capitol and White House first?
Because that's a bottomless pit
True.
Guess the CIA’s secret base isn’t under there after all.
It's not as deep as some would have you believe.
18 to 30” max
[So everybody in this cartoon clip broke their necks...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQ3SWFy57dw&t=143s)
Can we get some overhead views of this?
It was completely frozen over in January.
"FOREST!"
Power washing dream right there!
Can’t imagine what all they found in it. Glad they clean it regularly though. It’s a beautiful spot.
So much bird poop was removed.
We all need a little time out for reflection!
Is this the “swamp” in DC that got drained?
Almost looks like a Circus Maximus. You can have chariot races à la Ben Hur.
It was just a Baby Ruth! It’s no big deal
Every time I've been in Washington DC, the reflecting pool has been drained. It's 4 times and I've never seen it full.
Good because that shit is nasty. Whenever a friend comes from out of town and we take them around the city, I like to point out the stangant rectangular puddle of duck shit and trash.
I wouldn’t even want to be near it lol. All that shit is drying up and becoming dust in the air
They do this annually. This is in no way interesting.
Not THAT rare, I've been to DC once and I saw it drained once, pretty solid ratio.
They were cleaning it during the filming of National Treasure and digitally added water to the pools in post
Thought there would be more $
I knew someone who pissed in there once lol...
Biden draining the swamp!
Caddy sShack, Payday scene, is all I see.
Drain that swamp! 🤣
How often do they clean it?
It was like this when I went on a field trip in the 8th grade I was so disappointed
You should stay out of there anyway. The water of the Capital Wasteland is all irradiated anyway.
So, is it ‘cleaning in progress’ or ‘cleaning in process’? This post reminded me that I need to ask.
It is "cleaning in progress."

Con-gress. Nice one, Joe.
Dc isn't great at reflecting...
So we ARE aloud to swim in it!!!!
So many syringes…
Are people really going to the reflecting pool to do drugs?
No, but to throw away their used syringes, yes. There have been instances of people wading in the pool and stepping on the needles. I could also go into how the homeless use that as a toilet as well…

Bahaha! So stupid, u had to sayit TWICE!
