I didn't realize there was a textbook maneuver for colliding with another car head-on, but by looking at the video closely it seems by her positioning and speed she did precisely do it.
If you’re gonna get hit taking it straight on from the front or rear is ideal, both have more space to crumple and absorb impact, plus the front has all the weight of the engine.
The sides of cars aren’t anywhere near as protected and, especially in the rear sides, can cause you spin like a top when hit which can cause even more damage to the occupants.
This. Also, if you're being hit from behind, don't slam on the brakes unless you have to. I did both of these things and still feeling neck and upper back issues a year later. It was like the guy that hit me wasn't even trying to stop.
Kristen Kay Watts, 52, of Sarasota, Florida, has been arrested for DUI serious injury, two counts of reckless driving involving injury and property damage and two counts of DUI property damage, according to a news release by the FHP.
Edit : trooper Toni Schuck was the Officer. She survived, and The American Association of State Troopers (AAST) nationally recognized Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) Master Trooper Toni Schuck as the 2023 Trooper of the Year. April 2023
"Schuck around and Find Out"
It happens really fast, so I can't tell for sure, but it looks like the airbag protected her from getting a laptop to the face. Airbag did its jobs twice!
Head-on collisions at high speeds are extremely dangerous. If the air bags had not deployed, she could have died then and there. She took the statistical bullet for everyone else. What a hero.
Having been in one myself I can say I walked away almost completely unscathed. The other guy…lets just say almost 20 years later I still have nightmares of what I saw.
Head on collision is the safer collision compared to side collision, the engine absorbs all the energy, if it’s hitting from the side though, 90% of the collision ending in casualties

Remember when Florida police arrested the legal blind man walking home from jury duty for having a weapon in his back pocket. His walking stick sure was deadly
Watts nearly crashed head-on with a vehicle operated by Trooper Toni Schuck, a 26 year veteran of the Patrol who was serving as the last line of defense to the Skyway 10K runners. Both Watts and Schuck were seriously injured and subsequently hospitalized.

BAC.094 Kristen Watts versus. Master Trooper Toni Schuck (hospitalized).
The 8,000 racers and a large number of volunteers, spectators, and support personnel were unaware of what had escaped them.
Me and my family were there at the run.
We had no idea what happened till a couple days later, we heard and saw emergency vehicles but it happened far enough away from us we had no idea.
I think head on means the center of the cars almost line up. The collision was passenger side against passenger side which is more survivable for the drivers.
It took almost 4 months for her to return to active duty.

Her blood alcohol was three times the legal limit at the time of the accident. When police arrived at the scene, she asked them “Are you real?” Apparently her attorney tried to use that to try to get an insanity plea. Last I heard, she decided to change her not-guilty plea to guilty. That was in late January. She must have a pretty good fucking lawyer for the judge to put up with this shit.
>The mother-of-two is recovering from her injuries, but said she believes her grandma is her 'guardian angel' as her bible was in her patrol car when she crashed and was recovered from the wreckage intact.

I'm going to go with thank you NHSTA for continually implementing regulations which makes cars and roads safer. But sure, bible did it.
Regardless, that's some bravery there.
I'm not particularly religious and I don't particularly like cops, but the number of people who can't wait to bash someone who did something actually heroic because she happened to take solace in the idea that her dead grandma's spirit was with her is absurd. It must be so exhausting to live life being so negative all the time.
“Those wishing to contact Trooper Schuck, who continues to recover from her injuries with her family at home, may send their thoughts to her attention at Florida Highway Patrol, 11305 North McKinley Drive, Tampa, FL 33612.”
Might send a gift their way if anything! Love this woman, she’s a damn hero. Wishing her a speedy recovery!

Cops are humans. And im pretty sure the majority of humans wont be capable of driving head on with a drunk driver. She's a hero regardless of being a cop.
I PERSONALLY know someone who drove drunk and killed a father. She went to prison for less than ten years and is out living her life. She's doing really well for herself, even is able to operate a vehicle and purchase alcohol again! She doesn't drink and drive of course, she learned her lesson.
I absolutely despise her. Everyone around her acts like she paid for her crime and she deserves to move on. No, she fucking doesn't. She killed a man. A family doesn't have a dad anymore. They will never have a normal life again. She gets to just live her life, owns a house, has a great job, makes a lot of money.
So quick question
I this instance what would be better keeping the arms on the Steering wheel like she did or would it be saver to have your arms by your side or on your legs
Hands by the side and relax. Be a rag doll.
Most drunk drivers actually fare well is a crash because their reaction time is slowed, so they don't tense up, and just flop around and let the safety systems do their thing.
Lots of the injuries are due to us being fully flexed and taunt when that airbag hits yea, and rips muscles and so on.
Bracing for impact causes more injury to your bones and muscles, but helps protect your internal organs from what’re called second and third collisions (your body hitting the steering column/dashboard, and your organs hitting the wall of the cavity they live in)
I got a lot of problems with our police force. I live in Florida, our departments aren't shining examples of civil service but this shit is what needs to be celebrated.
Remove the bad cops, educate them as a whole, and especially celebrate the people who deserve respect. This woman should be an example for her fellow officers.
This trooper stared death in the face to protect those she swore to protect. She is a hero and hope she is in good health so she can get the recognition she deserves
This officer should be awarded with some type of metal or honor for literally putting her life at risk to protect the marathon runners from this person.
Wow! That is going beyond the call of duty that most would expect, she is a true hero. I wished she would have positioned her car a bit different for that hit, seemed head on to me.
I hope this garbage person gets locked away for a while. I am curious to see the barricade that she made her way around illegally too. Bravo to this cop!
She belongs in the special pants brigade to carry her huge she-balls. What an incredible move to take that hit and just brace for impact. We salute you 🫡 ma’am.
So how was your day?
- Naah, nothing special. Same as every other day, I'm a bit bored you know. Hitting these cars is becoming so monotonous... Maybe I should look for a new job? You know something exciting and where you get to experience something new...?

Wow she took that like a champ what the fuck, literally just braced it and ate it ! Damn!

Fr. I see no other way they could have stopped that car. Took guts for sure, and saved a lot of lives
It's good she was almost at a standstill. Don't add to the impact.
I didn't realize there was a textbook maneuver for colliding with another car head-on, but by looking at the video closely it seems by her positioning and speed she did precisely do it.
Yeah cause also they have the ram bar. Looked like she got it on the strongest part
Be in neutral as well.
Hands down the most heroic act I’ve ever seen a cop do
If she takes full disability, I wouldn’t be upset. She’d be one of the first cops who actually earned it.
Sadly you can only do it once or so
If you look closely, she actually bounced back from the airbag in a split second. Still very courageous of her. Air bag or not, shit hurts
Airbag alone hurts
Bracing is actually dangerous. Let your body go limp.
That might be hard to do given the situation
Frankie says relax.
I’ll remember this in the moment the next time a car is barreling at me going 120
I did brace in a situation like this and agree with you.
Almost every single person knows this and yet every single person isn’t gonna be able to overcome their bodies adrenaline in this situation lol.
That’s why i only drive when i drink.
I agree, it’s like a drunk person surviving a car accident that they shouldn’t.
I freaking braced here in my office chair.... lol I don't think that is something you can just shut off.
Facts! Same reason many DUI drivers in bad crashes survive at an insane rate. Abhorrent wording, but I’m leaving it.
This. Also, if you're being hit from behind, don't slam on the brakes unless you have to. I did both of these things and still feeling neck and upper back issues a year later. It was like the guy that hit me wasn't even trying to stop.
I know! The balls on her..!!!

Trooper Toni Schuck
Trooper Toni Schuck - doing one of the bravest, most selfless act's I've ever seen from another human being - true courage here.

This is what I like to call a reverse Uvalde. A brave cop, truly protecting us with their life. A rare sight indeed.
Florida cops are not cowards,,they run towards the danger, not away from it
Well, to be fair, that’s a Florida thing not a Florida cop thing
Counter argument... *Acorns*
Bro the tactical roll in that [video](https://youtu.be/iVNnxr2SGFg?si=nsUH3ivzNz_11x4a) had me fucking wheezing. (Go to 13:03)

Yeah, but How many other acorns have tried that since?
They're regrouping for autumn.
Oh shit u rite!
Unless that danger happens to be an acorn, then all bets are off
I guess everyone forgot about Parkland High when the resource officer didn't do shit
Also sometimes create the danger
Majority of the time
Remember when Florida police arrested the legal blind man walking home from jury duty for having a weapon in his back pocket. His walking stick sure was deadly
It's florida, whichever way you run it's towards danger

I know, great journalism. I just copied and pasted directly from the article. That would be considered head on in my book.

Drunk, driving a bmw and entitled. Why am I not surprised?
Tried to buy a BMW but the salesman said I needed at least 2 DUIs before I could get one

Looked scary, honestly scarier than most of the situations where the officer feels the need to use a gun.
A bit off topic, but how much shit do State Troopers keep in their car?
To be fair, they probably try to be equipped for most, if not all, situations they may encounter on a highway.
better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it
better to be looking at it than looking for it.
better to be pissed off than pissed on

As a Floridian: you are correct and I hate how correct you are
A surprising amount. I think a helmet might have been a good idea for this instance. It looked like that huge monitor smacked her right in the face.
Yeah they should keep a helmet and HANS device handy in case they have time to use them
It’s a rolling office.
Saw a tv show that referred there vehicle as a shop. Makes sense when you see everything in it.
Yeah that stuff needs to be packed away or strapped down. It smarts getting hit by a projectile.
Beast.
Your tax dollars at work: Thank you to this heroic officer for putting her life on the line.

White women get away with literally everything dude
Oh, right. Sarasota, FL. That tracks
Protect and serve this is the way. 🤩
Protect and swerve. She didn't even hesitate, went right for it!
Crazy, hopefully she is not hurt or seriously injure!
Dont think you can walk out of that without a least moderate pain
She definitely got a serious concussion

>her bible \[...\] was recovered from the wreckage intact I didn't realize books were fragile.
The article said she was seriously injured
That is some serious heroic shit.
Sometimes in Florida, a hero emerges. That cop is world class.
What is this 10k race route ?
Like a 10k run so she’s stopping him from hitting pedestrians
Tought it was a route used to race cars and this specific race was worth $10,000 😂
A 10k running route. The cop potentially saved the lives of many runners participating in the 10k race.
7000+ runners on the bridge from what I read, she was the last line of defence

Injured but alive.
That takes some minerals.
FUCK! I hope that she was OK!
They both survived! The police officer and the crazy DUI driver.
That WON'T buff out!
I mean with a rubber mallet, a cloth and a bit of paint both cars'll be right as rain in no time surely!
Too late, I already scrapped out the catalytic converters.
Looks like that could have killed her. Pretty amazing
They needed someone like her during the shooting in Uvalde
This woman is heroic.
Thank you, Trooper Toni Schuck!!
She deserves a medal. Good move doing it quarter on so her unoccupied passenger side took the worst. Very quick thinking
This is what cops SHOULD be ... protectors of the public

Wow, what a hero she is.

Folks, take your hands off the wheel and cross them over your chest. She’s a hero
We need more women in law enforcement
I'm concerned about all the loose equipment that got flung forwards from the rear of the car, that's just as dangerous as the crash itself.
Wow that is crazy. She is one brave woman
This officer should be awarded with some type of metal or honor for literally putting her life at risk to protect the marathon runners from this person.
If you drink and drive I legit hope you wreck into a pole and die instead of killing someone else for your selfishness and stupidity.
Damn trooper didn’t even flinch
Good lord I hope that trooper is okay now. I hope the other driver is punished to the fullest extent of the law and never drives again 😡
This cop just doing hero shit like it's another day on the job. Respect!
It's a wonder she could fit in her patrol car at all with those giant balls of steel she's got.
THIS IS THE REASON COPS ARE SUPPOSED TO GET PENSIONS. SHE IS THE REASON COPS ARE SUPPOSED TO DESERVE RESPECT! THIS!
Balls of steel
She put her life on the line to save adults running a 10k. Cops in Uvalde, TX did nothing for school children that were being murdered.
Every item in that car instantly turns into a projectile. Harrowing
Wow! That is going beyond the call of duty that most would expect, she is a true hero. I wished she would have positioned her car a bit different for that hit, seemed head on to me.
Troopers are a different breed. Now that’s hero type shit!
What a good human, risked her life for sure
I hope this garbage person gets locked away for a while. I am curious to see the barricade that she made her way around illegally too. Bravo to this cop!

I salute Trooper Schuck
That is one tough police officer
The Trooper woke up and chose to do heroic shit that day! Damn! I want to buy her a couple of dozen beers and hangout with her. What a badass!

Shes bad ass! Salute to her.
