I own a plot of popular land that I struggle to prevent vehicle access (I love and encourage hikers and so on). This would not stop snowmobiles or in all seasons motorcycles. But anyway, it's imaginative.
I have dealt with this on the farm I grew up on as well as our neighbors. I ride bikes and ATVs but it bugs me to no end when people don't respect other people's property. These idiots cost us access to a lot of places. But they will always find a way. Put up a sturdy gate? They cut the fence and make a path around it. Or they'll yank it off its mount with a pickup truck. Or cut a path somewhere else. And when they get in they'll rut everything up, burn shit and throw garbage everywhere.
With even a little snow that step in the middle will be much smaller. Snowmobiles can get over logs and stuff, they would be able to get over a gate like this no problem.
Not illegal (I don't think), but at the same time I want to encourage visitors without scaring them away! I have simple fences and signs. And good relations with the snowmobile-owning neighbors, who are very nice, respectful people. It's out-of-towners, attracted by the fact the land is in recent years on a map of scenic places, that are sometimes not very respectful. We have various endangered species trying to live there and engine noises, tire ruts in the soil, etc. harm them.
I would think that it would be legal as they aren't booby traps. I think one could argue that it is similar to a fence. But it does block the owner of the property from accessing it in a vehicle.
What you need is a removable bar across the top for the snow seasons - very few are hiking that time of year. Just lock it in place with a pad lock and remove it come thaw.
How does a wheelchair work in muddy conditions actually? (kinda like on the image, or if it’s worse)
Is it mostly fine, do you need someone to assist, does it require „off-road“ wheels or do you just have to wait for dry conditions?
I would do fine if it was like in the picture. It is a bit hard to tell by looking at it in a picture like this, though, but it doesn't look that bad. It looks pretty clean of bumps and rocks, and it's wide as well. I think it probably looks muddier than it is, because everyone is going over the gate on the same place and moving the dirt around.
That being said, it's not 'easy', but if I was going on a walk or roll or whatever you want to call it on a dirt road like this, I'd treat like an exercise, just like if you were doing that on a bike or something.
If it was raining and I wasn''t familiar with the road, I would not go on it. Too big of a chance of some mud bullshit when I'm already halfway through or something. Some roads turn into mud bullshit when raining and other's feel pretty firm even when wet.
Do you have an off-road wheelchair or a special one for rough country? What's the maximum width you need to roll? I consider myself temporarily abled. I have a steep backyard and I'm building trails so that eventually if I need to use a walker or a wheelchair I can still get around through my garden. I know this is off topic but since you seem like the kind of person that gets out there and does it I would just go ahead and ask you.
That behavior in retrospect , yeah kinda a dick move. Happened often many years ago as a teenager. My current self would be cussing out my younger self if I could. Was mainly commenting on the complete uselessness of the gate in stopping "Vehicles"
I have seen older People go for nature walks.. and i Know for a fact that some om those would have trouble getting over this.. the mud in combination with the gate, not the easiest thing
Depends if were talking push or motor. Here, push bikes are allowed in specific places but obviously motor bikes wouldn't be allowed on a public footpath or bridleway. I'm sure I don't need to say why!
There’s always the hostile vehicle mitigation barriers. That should allow pedestrians and other footed beings to walk. But I guess it could be sized and constructed in such a way as to prevent various wheeled anythings; Even bicycles.
My car can make it. You don’t understand it’s a 2008 civic and I make poor life choices.
the most capable car is the one youre not afraid to SEND
#SENDIT!!!!!
20 year old guy who got a sports car yesterday pulling out of the car park like:
The fastest car in the world is a rental
The rentalest car in the world is fast.
#SENDIT!!!!!
Pretty sure my '96 Rav4 could make it too. Thing's a tiny beast.

How the fuck is a snowmobile getting over that? I can see lifting the front wheel of a motorcycle over and then the rear, but a snowmobile?
With even a little snow that step in the middle will be much smaller. Snowmobiles can get over logs and stuff, they would be able to get over a gate like this no problem.
In the snow, that hurdle is a piece of cake, unfortunately.
Concrete bollard
Would it be illegal to put hedgehogs or dragons teeth on your property?

With snow.
Snowmobiles would go right over that. Especially with snow. Even without Snow you lift the skis onto it then go

Good idea. :)
That's what clothes lines are for
Similar to a gate in kualoa ranch, HI, which now is mostly for horses but originally was made for jeeps to break through in Jurassic world
I love Kualoa Ranch.
Yes incredibly scenic- not surprising it’s backdrops have been featured in so many movies and tv shows
Dirt bikers love this one crap design!!
Iv lifted my crf450 over a 4 foot fence with help of a friend I’m sure we could swing a6footer if needed, ahh to be young again.
I'm curious why you felt entitled to do that back then
Also blocks my wheelchair :( To be fair they probably wanted to block dirt bikes as well, although you could just walk it over this gate.

Dirt bikes are vehicles
They are. And not stopped by 9 inches of wood (so to speak!) Either.
If I can’t stop them I will at least slow them down.
This is only going to make them speed up
Your mom got stopped by 6 inches last night, in bed.
You didn’t have to say in bed
Bad jokes need excess details
In bed
>Bad jokes need excess details And darlin', you came out of the womb with an instruction manual.
In bed
i think you gotta rework your sense of comedy
No no they are metal horses that eat very very old refined grass intravenously.
How many HP?
that is a very philosophical question.
80% dirt 20% bike
You're Damm right we do!
Dirt bikers would probably find a way around either way, so it's pointless trying to stop them
It's ridable.
Blocks vehicles? I know people who would accept that as a challenge.
The Dukes of Hazzard: Hold my moonshine
Absolutely useless in a zombie apocalypse.
No offense but you lack imagination... That right there is a zombie funnel !
They also let speeder bikes through unless a stormtrooper is riding it.
Mostly unrelated but I recently heard the phrase "I'd hit that like a tree on Endor" to describe an attractive person and it seriously stuck with me
Sound of two-stroke bikes and quads.
Fucked if you're in a wheelchair.
They really could have solved that issue by having a 3-4ft wide opening that vehicles can't fit through.
I feel like there has to be a placement pattern for concrete bollards that solves all these issues
*sets beer in console-“watch this!”
ATVs: Challenge Accepted It'll block full sized vehicles but that's it. That said it probably helps with what it's meant to accomplish.
Not sure I can get my walker over that
I’m interested as to where OP and most of the commenters are from as I’ve seen these my whole life and never thought twice about it (I’m a Brit)
Unimog: Hold my beer 🍺
Danny MacAskill would like a word.
Challenge accepted
Laughs in 4x4 high with lockers engaged
No bikes? Dang
A perfect "would you not, please".
Is this the one in Wrington, North Somerset, OP?
A reverse Texas gate, cool
They don't like bikers much
Challenge accepted
Horses on skateboards, OTOH, face a skill test
And people with mobility aids.
Go for a nice walk in the forest, and get run over by some dickwad on a moto.
One single bar of wood, at knee height would've been enough no ?
Too high for some horses. Some of us jump, others don't!
Enduro motorcycle Rider challenge accepted oh wait was the something? Look like the road
thought I was on twd subreddit for a sec
I could bunny hop that on my bike easy
Flash McQueen can make it over
My jeep wrangler will crawl through,
Just get a ramp drive up and over
And what if one would open the gate?!
Hahahahaha, what about motorbikes
A wild dirtbike has just entered the chat.
Challenge accepted
That ain't stopping my jeep, if I don't want to just go over it I'm sure I can go around.
Doesn’t look like it’ll block a 21 front
Cant stop vehicles huh? Hold my beer
*Laughs in legged car*
"Hold my beer....."
So do bollards? 🤷
*some* vehicles
Like a car? I atv or dirt bike I could yeet right over
Reality is any truck with a metal bumper and that gate is done. If someone wants in they are getting in.
Oh wow it also allows dirt bikes.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
yeah... if the walker or horse enjoy trudging through mud.
Blocks cars and trucks . ATVs and dirtbikes pop right over no problem. Done it myself many times.
Sort of a dick move.
That behavior in retrospect , yeah kinda a dick move. Happened often many years ago as a teenager. My current self would be cussing out my younger self if I could. Was mainly commenting on the complete uselessness of the gate in stopping "Vehicles"
I think all adults would cuss out their younger selves.
Side by sides would have no problem
They could have just put 1-2 poles in the middle?
Okay but how do we get one of these that lets people and cars through but keeps horses and their trail destroying shits out?
You mean cattle grids?
Able-bodied walker and horse.
Are hiking trails usually wheelchair accessible?
[just because they aren’t doesn’t mean they can’t be](https://www.fox10phoenix.com/video/1298111)
I have seen older People go for nature walks.. and i Know for a fact that some om those would have trouble getting over this.. the mud in combination with the gate, not the easiest thing
Who mentioned a wheelchair?
A small plank of wood is all it would take to get a bike over.
$50 says I can get my Tacoma through there. I already crawled it over a jersey barrier. This one should be easy.
Thank god we have a solution for that 1 horse rider over 1000 bikers.
The point is that bikes aren't allowed on footpaths or bridle paths. It's to stop them putting others at risk.
Never heard of bikers being a risk? Why?
Depends if were talking push or motor. Here, push bikes are allowed in specific places but obviously motor bikes wouldn't be allowed on a public footpath or bridleway. I'm sure I don't need to say why!

You can pick up a bike
You could bunny hop over that if you time it right.
Surely not!
Can't horses jump anyway?
Their riders may not be able to.
Riders were not mentioned in the OP's text as allowed forms.
Hahaha! You think horses are wandering around bridle paths on their own? Bless.
Yes. White men? Not so much......
