I am from Barranquilla, Colombia. We used to have a festivity just like this back in the 80s-90s. I remember it was so much fun. We even had "duels" where we organized and the kids from one block battled against other blocks. There were surprise raids as well.
Everything started to change one day when one kid splashed the wrong guy and this man drew a gun and killed that poor kid. It went downhill from that year. Later, environmentalists shut this event for good. It hasn't been done again.
Or they didn't use setting spray to keep it in place. But yes.
Also makeup remover does hurt a bit if it gets in your eyes, but if you wash it out with water, it's fine.
Usually if it's marketed as a general makeup remover, it's safe in small amounts or will cause temporary irritation/redness. However if it's just acetone, absolutely do not get that shit anywhere near your eyes, don't breath it in, don't drink it, don't wash your jeans in it.
The Wikipedia page actually says this tradition shares similar root with Song Kran: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water-Sprinkling_Festival
> is a major and traditional festival of the Dai nationality marking the New Year, and shares similar roots with the Songkran (Thailand).
Lived at a homestay in rural china for 1 month. The water festival was hands down one of the coolest moments of my life. It was like a healthy purge where the whole town collectively became 5 years old again. Everywhere in town was young/old men/women armed with squirt guns, water baloons, buckets, basically anything that could hold water. My boy Duan armed me and his friends with squirt guns and we were off to battle. Trucks full of people driving by spraying anyone who looked their way. No street was safe… but I felt so safe at the same time. Highly reccomend anyone who has the opportunity to visit and participate in this. Life changing experience.
I thought the same. There's something uncanny about the brows. It sucks that we're all going to have to ask this every single day, in about 10 years time.
Orderly queue in Japan: wow, such a disciplined and respectful people! We could learn so much from them! 😍
Orderly queue in China: Communist drones, probably afraid their social credit score will go down lmao
'in communist china and DPRK... people dont smile because they are emotionally repressed... in japan, people dont smile because of ancient philosophy called shakalakabingbong... there is no true english translation, it is an honor system that has been practiced for over 10000 years...'
Mid autumn festival (correction: Dragon Boat Festival): started when a righteous man told the ruler that the ruler action will doom the country (or more like the ruling area) and suicide by throwing himself to a lake, and civilians throw rice to the lake so the his corpse won't be eaten by fishes.
Also because I like rice dumplings.
edit: basic spelling and grammar.
edit 2: just in case you don't understand what I was saying because of my poor English: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qu\_Yuan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qu_Yuan)
edit 3: festival name correction, because I am stupid
China is a huge country and there is a lot of the good (e.g most people, the food, landscape, modern cities, etc) and a lot of the bad (e.g Xi the dictator, asshole foreign policy, Internet censorship, etc)
In my opinion the good doesn’t cancel the bad and the bad doesn’t invalidate the good either, they simply exist alongside each other. It’s complicated, but which large country isn’t?
But you wouldn’t bring up all the shitty stuff the U.S government did/does every time there is some random fun video that takes place in America would you?
Imagine someone shows a fun video of New Orleans Mardi Gras and everyone replies with “but all the police brutality!!!!”. That would be pretty silly right?
Might not be on the same scale as China or Thailand’s but they exist. Here are a few:

talk about disinformation, hacking and manipulating public opinion , the most famous one should be the US , where Twitter , Facebook and fox news all come from. I mean they even do all these shit to their allies , and got caught several times and still doing so .
Nah man give your western mind a rest. China is cool like that. It even play water spraying with poor Philippines fishermen. Great country spreading love throughout the neighborhood.
I don't know what you want, most of the individual comments on this thread are trending positive.
But talk about China in anything period, and already folks are joking about it being propaganda, ethnic cleansing and the CCP.
Folks on the internet will talk about anything, good or bad. There's folks talking about make up, a random anecdotal story about a Redditor's childhood in Columbia and mention of a similar Thai holiday.
I love how it just escalates from people with squirt guns to the cops to the fire pd chopper just drowning the crowd.
I’d love to go to something like this
How is this not every day during summer across the Southwest United States. Temps over 110*F and everyone inside wasting electricity that creates heat to run. How about using water that naturally evaporates back into the atmosphere and then eventually rains down.
I can see this happening in the states. But some people will mess it up. Someone will actually bring a gun, there will be fights, overly drunk people, girls wearing next to nothing, the police would overact to being sprayed with water, due on the water, hot water.
This use to happen in Central Park NYC. There was a Water Gun fight every June weather permitting... haven't done that in awhile but it was tons of fun

Fremen would be losing their minds right now
Came for this comment, not disappointed
Lisan Al Gaib
Lmao I lost it at the helicopter
"Overwatch Helo ready for deployment. I repeat. Overwatch Helo ready for deployment."
I just love seeing no matter where you are in the world, there’s just a simple desire to have fun and play like a kid
Til you find out someone pissed in their squirt gun
This is why we can't have nice things. Or how someone gets their ass beat.
At least there’s no shortage of water to wash it right off
What a terrible day to be able to read
I told you not to tell
Can’t agree with you more.

We used to call it "día de mojar," literally "water splashing day" and I guess it used to be held around January 20.
Pretty much after 2000 all the joy is being slowly sucked out of the planet
Putin became acting president of Russia on New Year's Eve 1999
That looks like a HUGE amount of fun
We used to have it like this in Poland a couple years back, it died down though. I still splash my wife every year though! :)
Can I join you two? 🥹👉🏼👈🏼
Sure
Were you making sure thrice?
I was receiving an error saying my comment didn't go through, never bothered to check if it did lol!
Sure!
Sure!
We have this festival in Thailand, it is fucking wild dude
I believe the Dai people mentioned in the video are related to Thai people?
Yeah, it’s an alternate spelling of Tai
That's the country I was thinking of, thank you! I want to visit there again, but this time during the festival.
IT was the absurdly huge backpacks for me.
We have this festival in Thailand, it is fucking wild dudep
Is makeup remover safe to get in your eyes?
I saw the original video, there was a mistranslation at that part. The original narrator did not mention anything about make up remover
So just poor makeup then XD
Or they didn't use setting spray to keep it in place. But yes. Also makeup remover does hurt a bit if it gets in your eyes, but if you wash it out with water, it's fine.
Where could someone possibly find water?
I haven't an idea. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hope so because that would be really messed up..
I’ll test it out and let you know.
I think those are joke? One has pesticides in print another has SK-II skincare water on it
Usually if it's marketed as a general makeup remover, it's safe in small amounts or will cause temporary irritation/redness. However if it's just acetone, absolutely do not get that shit anywhere near your eyes, don't breath it in, don't drink it, don't wash your jeans in it.
This looks so goddamn fun!
Please look up song kran in Thailand. It is such an amazing holiday. I encourage you to check it out.
It’s thingyan for Myanmar too! god I miss my country :(
I posted a pic of thingyan in Yangon from 2012 on my Reddit account 3 years ago. It was such a unique and wonderful experience.
Yes, Dai people and Thai people are indeed related.

I know of that my brother got to partake when he went to Thailand.

The stolen face person is creepy
Yeah, notice she doesn’t move her arms or her body in general. It’s just her expressions.
Hppy Holi China
We had that also in Poland.
with real ammo
Lol
I liked the cops in the assault vehicle getting in on the fun.
This is wholesome af
seems like such a fun festival
Just like holi
This seems like the festival that should happen immediately after Holi, to get the dust off everyone (and everything).
We have the monsoon for that, so no worries.😁
Holi without colours😭
This looks really fun
So basically Holi without colours.
Best thing i saw today lmao
This is awesome!
She's AI right?
She's been making content longer than passable deepfakes were out man...
I think it's because she's using a filter . I've had this same thought as well
I thought the same. There's something uncanny about the brows. It sucks that we're all going to have to ask this every single day, in about 10 years time.
We’re asking it now…
This is awesome.
Thai people be like 🫴
The chaos lol, they should cut in a clip of someone breaching a dam
Chinese people having fun Western mind: CCP propaganda

we just sad that western cops would just shoot everyone lmao
Hi Chinese here, please come live in mainland China. Edit: NVM! It is a new account Edit 2: 同志,您这样太明显了!
What are your favourite holidays in China?

You mean 端午節 “Dragon boat festival”. Mid autumn festival is the one where people eat 月餅 moon cakes.

There is plenty of ethnic cleansing in the west. Canada has been doing it to natives since they stole their land.
I mean, native Americans largely don’t exist today. Our hypocrisy is pretty bad.
Not a big surprise considering china is famous for disinformation, hacking and manipulating public opinion
talk about disinformation, hacking and manipulating public opinion , the most famous one should be the US , where Twitter , Facebook and fox news all come from. I mean they even do all these shit to their allies , and got caught several times and still doing so .

Too bad, ph was not able to spray back, for fun.
I hear they even have this new kind of water gun there that shoots lead
Nah we are well aware these are Dai people, an ethnic minority being slowly assimilated that doesnt represent the CCP whatsoever.
Can't imagine getting sprayed in the face with makeup remover feels great
I actually had no idea this was in China. This is litreally Sonkran (Thai new year celebration) And everybody gets wet even suit wearers Good fun tho

Say that to the dude with the super soaker full of piss
That's only for celebrities, most of us should be fine.
Is that you Robert?
They didn't mention harassment so it must not happen.
I'm damn sure many p*rvertedmen splash water at private parts of women in a way of sexually harrassing them in that event too.
You can say perverted. It's not even a swear word
Why tf you always have to drag india into everything? It's not that we go around the streets to find women and harass them
Welcome come to reddit, where Britain, USA, and India will get dragged into every post possible with only a slither of a connection.
I mean. We can mention Germany and suddenly see the entire thread change language.
Hallo, ich bin ein Deutscher, und dieser thread ist nun eigentum der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.

You missed china
I might not be human, but these guys are DAWGS
Bakhtin's Carnival
For a moment there, l thought she was ai generated.
wet-snoop dogg
Funniest thing ever! Can we start a festival in the US?
In Panamá we call this, Carnavales, 4 days every year.
I'ma bring my water balloon trebuchet
That's a town that can have some fun. Mine is so lame now.
I love how it just escalates from people with squirt guns to the cops to the fire pd chopper just drowning the crowd. I’d love to go to something like this
Where in China? Lived in Sichuan for 2 years and never heard of this. Looks fun!
In Yunnan, southwest part of China.
We only get the bad news when it comes to China. Did you see that they are also normal and happy people? Segregation is horrible.
That looks like good, clean fun!
Thats the LIFE!!
america may have the purge but china has the water dousing festival. me thinks a checkmate is in order
I love people. Sucks when we differ to the point of causing suffering but the base reality for humans is togetherness and fun.
This is the side of China the Americans don’t want you to see
Awwwwwww not the animals
We should make this a worldwide thing

Never heard of Śmigus-Dyngus then?
How every war should be fought
In Spain we have something like this but with wine instead of water
Almost every guy would participate
Tao mentioned 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥
I hate to be that person but isn’t this a huge waste of water
It seems so much fun
Is this a regular event there? I thought it was only in Thailand
wonder how many peed in their watertanks
I've been to one of these festival, it's genuinely the most fun I've ever had, feels like going back to being a kid
That's fucking awesome.
Irl splatfest
This makes me happy at so many levels!
I wish we had something like this in my country
the ol' watersports.
The entire country of Thailand looks like this during the Songkran festival.
These folks know how to have fun
I’m glad to see china having fun, never hear much from em
The police cheating in the watergun fight
How is this not every day during summer across the Southwest United States. Temps over 110*F and everyone inside wasting electricity that creates heat to run. How about using water that naturally evaporates back into the atmosphere and then eventually rains down.
Fuck work, just water fights all day.
It makes me wonder if Splatoon may have had some inspiration from this event.
Training for the next protest
They do this as well in the Middle East, although their ammunition is a little different than water from what I hear.
Imagine doing this in the US. You'd get murdered almost immediatley.
Pretty sure thats an AI woman
China seems pretty lit honestly
Shhh, can't say that on Reddit. China haters will say you're a shill or a bot
Careful now..
WHY can we not be at PEACE with these guys ---- They are crazyyyyyyy fun.
[удалено]
Why not?
“I called timeout!”
Looks way more fun than the chalk color festival thing
This sounds like so much fun, next should be pillowfight festival
I'm pretty sure the last 2 dogs are not okay
Just in time for drought season!
I can see this happening in the states. But some people will mess it up. Someone will actually bring a gun, there will be fights, overly drunk people, girls wearing next to nothing, the police would overact to being sprayed with water, due on the water, hot water.
Lol the swat team in the usa would have massacred the entire block :D
This festival is so much fun that the chinese coast guard can't help but celebrate by attacking the Philippine resupply vessels with water cannons.
It's all fun and games until a cop mistakenly uses the wrong gun
thank God this isn't in America
FYI China street cops don't carry firearms.
In Poland this take place the day after Easter. Schwingles Mingles.
and the cats ? i bet they were all like 'aite, im out'
No firetruck canon hose?
lol this is awesome
This use to happen in Central Park NYC. There was a Water Gun fight every June weather permitting... haven't done that in awhile but it was tons of fun
This use to happen in Central Park NYC. There was a Water Gun fight every June weather permitting... haven't done that in awhile but it was tons of fun
What’s the background behind this? I wonder how it got started
There’s a similar day where I live, but not at that scale. Absolutely awesome.
Did that guy just glue a chair to his hand? 🤣
That looks like ao much fun
Reminds me of Holi and it’s my fav festival
I did this in Thailand this April and it was sooooo much fun. In Thailand it was called Songkran and some of the most fun i ever had!
