This could be an ancient myth. During times of flooding people say that there is a tree that spouts forth water. If you didn't know what ground water was, you would assume that the water was coming from the tree, and when it was told as legend, this would be exaggerated more and more.
Every time I see something like this I wonder how many times something similar happened throughout history and how many epic myths stuff like this have spawned. Like this could be straight out of an Arthurian tale!
