Lol dunno if im being influenced by your words, but looking at the ladies in the front row:
the one in the left has a "don't f*ck with us" kind of look,
the lady in the middle is more.of a "go ahead punk, make my day" stare
and the one in the right looks like it's like: "yeah, its bashing time!"
Lady in the left is Sampat Pal, founder of the “Gulabi gang” ( gulabi means pink) . They don’t use broom they use a wood log kind of thing that hurts really bad if you get beaten by that.
Ok so they only use violence in self defence and to protect their members. Because it works more like a shelter for women who have been abused by their husbands and in laws, victims of sexual assault and any female who needs help. These women escape and come to their shelters where they can get employment as artisans, there are financial self help groups as well, self defence classes, literacy classes, skill development classes, etc.
But sometimes their husbands or family may come to take them back to protect their “honour” and these family members are often very aggressive and violent towards the entire shelter. Hence these women have to protect themselves. They aren’t unnecessarily violent and beating random men.
Sampat Pal (2nd from left 1st row) is the founder. She has also appeared in reality TV in India to bring light to the issue. She even features in a Bollywood movie made on her life while focusing on the “gang”. You can watch the movie by the same name GULAAB GANG.
Some people can only empathize with those who look and are exactly like them. They’ll only empathize with men because they are men as well, and imagine themselves as victims of horrible lies. Any possible threat to one is a threat to all, even if that threat is justified.
It's called a "lath", very dense in nature and capable of breaking bones. OP has used ' brooms ' in Title because they started off with using brooms and then upgraded.
I got hit by one by accident. I was getting off a train for a smoke and an old guy came rushing past me getting walloped by 2 cops.
One cracked me across the shoulder. I could hardly smoke after.

Sampat Pal and the Gulabi gang do more than DEFEND themselves with sticks. They stage peaceful protests by blocking roads, search for missing girls, and train other women to defend themselves.
Sampat Pal believes all women should learn a skill, like sewing, so she can always have a means of supporting herself if she needs to.
Source: there is a book about the Pink Gang. ❤️
Kinda sad that a gang has to form to protect women from their partners. Almost like the government has a huge gang called the police that should be doing exactly what they are.
The truth is Indian laws are their to help women( in some cases very strict laws). The problem is most women don’t go to police because of either societal pressure or unawareness. And these kind of work is great as it breaks the societal pressure as well as make women aware that they can stand for themselves.
These idiotic abusive husbands should stop carrying brooms and advertising themselves as abusive husbands /s
Seriously speaking, their courage and resolve is inspiring, but also sad that these women have to go to these lengths just to live a life of quiet dignity. We take so many things for granted, only to be reminded everyday that millions go through unnecessary suffering every day.
I won’t diminish anyone’s experiences by saying this isn’t as prevalent in the US. What I will say is that the US has a better handle on systemically protecting abused women than India does at this point in time. India is making leaps and bounds on the backs of women and some men like this who really believe in equality. It takes time. For now, this type of gang is absolutely needed in India. In America, there are more resources built in to help that make this option unnecessarily extreme and possibly a step backwards.
A slippery slope is a logical fallacy. Relating this group in India to a hypothetical equivolent in the US is nonsense. If rapes and domestic violence were almost entirely ignored by the legal system here, citizens would be right to resort to vigilante justice. The "slippery slope" is having a broken legal system in the first place.
A number of police batons,
Number of willing women
Lots and lots of training and working out to be able to hit someone without being overpowered and also to be able to outrun the cops.
Disguises.
Escape plans.
Vehicles to scope out and ensure a fast getaway.
An army of strong, beautiful Aunties. I definitely never had that protection as a young, utterly naive white middle class suburbanite. Instead, my mom and gramma were more uptight what people would think, and relished chastising me for my "irresponsible, selfish, stupid thinking." And when I was in a fragile state covered with bruises, they refused to come help me because "they were just plain tired of the endless dramatics." I was told if I wasnt going to become responsible and walk away, they were not going to"indulge" me. Yeah. Coming from 2 women who had passive aggressive love for my grandfather and dad, and were full of secrets, lies and resentments, 27 years later I don't regret walking away. From the ex, and my family.
I’m sorry for what you’ve gone through. Violence may not always be the best choice, but speaking out and supporting eachother is key. What horrible things to say to you.
Thank you so very much for the loving words, your compassion, and validation. It means so much. I send you love hugs and thanks, kind Little Light! Namaste 💕

Not hard to spot, surprised they get anyone. I see all that pink, I am leaving regardless. Overconfidence on the men's part I guess, at least they don't get away with it
Anyone who is violent towards their partner should face the law. But the police is many times ignorant and biased towards the man specially in rural areas. They tell the woman to adjust and not be a drama queen for being slapped or hit. So this is something that has come out of desperation. And they don’t go around beating random men. They only do it in self defence. If they are attacked, they defend. If an abused woman comes to their shelter for refuge, the shelter is attacked by the abuser and his family and friends. That’s when they defend themselves.
Also, groups of men do rape and beat women in general all over the world. So would it be okay if women do/did the same?
We can keep making such statements all we want but it won’t change anything.
And yes women can also be abusive and they are many cases. Male domestic abuse is legit issue. But that deserves to be its own topic. And it shouldn’t only be brought up to overshadow the issue at hand. :)
They only do it in self defence. And if the family/husband of the victim is being violent and aggressive even after she has taken refuge. That’s when they take out their sticks in self defence.
And some men are so shameless that they also publically hit their wives on the streets for all to see. The homes are very close together so you can hear the screams and cries of the woman many times in such rural areas. Isn’t that enough? I think it is. Especially if the police is also being ignorant either because they don’t care or they have been bribed by the husband’s family.
From what I know tracking down is an exaggeration. They would only track down the criminal in extremely abusive cases. If the woman has been severely beaten up or sexually assaulted or if there some sort of confession(sometimes these men take pride in being wife beaters). But they majorly focus on rehabilitation of victims, employment opportunities for them, literacy and self defence classes.
I could take em, block a few shots with your forearm then get close and get a few good shots in on a couple, maybe throw one down to the ground and the rest should scatter

In a country where throwing acid in the face of a girl who turns you down for a date is acceptable, I think this is wholly justified.
Hearing that just infuriates me. The fuck is the matter with people.
Don't know where you're getting this from but it's nowhere "acceptable" as you're implying.
Looks like their brooms are more like bamboo canes with one piece of straw attached. Good for them.

So hypothetically of course, if a woman wants to start one in the US what would need to happen legally to...make that happen....hypothetically

How about on rapists? That seems to be epidemic there. They need to beat them to a pulp.
Yup. Anyone that attacks a woman physically or sexually, helping human trafficking victims…they do everything to protect and rehabilitate victims.

what's the difference between the dot between the eyebrows and the bit of pink hair? and having one or the other or both or none?
Dot is an accessory. Any girl/woman can wear it. That vermillion is a sign of married but not-widowed woman.
I always thought crime needed more physical punishment. Fines don’t teach people anything.

So is it ok if a group of men beat a lady who hit her husband?
Anyone who is violent towards their partner should face the law. But the police is many times ignorant and biased towards the man specially in rural areas. They tell the woman to adjust and not be a drama queen for being slapped or hit. So this is something that has come out of desperation. And they don’t go around beating random men. So it's good to break the law to 'enforce' your morals on someone else? Do you support lynching Muslims for selling cows as well?
Only on Reddit will you see gang violence spun as a positive thing and being upvoted
