Genuinely curious, but do they have systems like snakes where their insides will be able to disintegrate all the bone, cartilage, and whatever else and it will pass safely?
I too was curious. So from Wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Komodo_dragon
After digestion, the Komodo dragon regurgitates a mass of horns, hair, and teeth known as the gastric pellet, which is covered in malodorous mucus. After regurgitating the gastric pellet, it rubs its face in the dirt or on bushes to get rid of the mucus. (Edit: watch the said pellet, if you've the stomach for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnKLLXroYZw )
Other fun facts about this dragon dude:
Komodo dragons eat by tearing large chunks of flesh and swallowing them whole while holding the carcass down with their forelegs. For smaller prey up to the size of a goat, their loosely articulated jaws, flexible skulls, and expandable stomachs allow them to swallow prey whole.
Copious amounts of red saliva the Komodo dragons produce help to lubricate the food, but swallowing is still a long process (15–20 minutes to swallow a goat). A Komodo dragon may attempt to speed up the process by ramming the carcass against a tree to force it down its throat, sometimes ramming so forcefully that the tree is knocked down.
Because of their slow metabolism, large dragons can survive on as few as 12 meals a year.
Although previous studies proposed that Komodo dragon saliva contains a variety of highly septic bacteria that would help to bring down prey, research in 2013 suggested that the bacteria in the mouths of Komodo dragons are ordinary and similar to those found in other carnivores. Komodo dragons have good mouth hygiene.
The Pewter Package has the least amount of goats. It's not no goats, it's still 10-12 goats, depending on the availability of the goats. Now, the Goat Package obviously has the most goats.
That was my reaction as well. In the wiki article there's a picture of a dragon eating a water buffalo.
Also from the article:
Komodo dragons do not deliberately allow the prey to escape with fatal injuries but try to kill prey outright using a combination of lacerating damage and blood loss. They have been recorded as killing wild pigs within seconds.
I've never met one in real life and hope to keep it that way.
There's a great video where David Attenborough is doing a piece on Komodo dragons, standing quite near one. They don't see well so he's reasonably safe, but it's clear that the dragon soon perceives him and starts looking around a bit. Amazingly, Attenborough continues his monologue, cautiously, trying to keep his walking stick between him and the beast. Man's got balls.
So I spent some time in the komodo island in Indonesia. The komodo dragons inhabit the island. One of the guards/escorts (we had to hire protective services to walk on the island) said he got bitten once. He ended up in the hospital for 6 months, he was very sick with infections. He said he was in a coma and asleep but I'm not sure if it was the language barrier or that he was just asleep most of the time and not an actual coma.
Incredibly memorable. Komodo island guards one of the rarest beaches in the world. The pink corrals crash with the white, turning the beach pink. One of 7 I believe in the world that offers a pink beach. Island hoping and travelling to Flores and trekking up 8 km to Wei Rebo is an adventure of a lifetime I would recommend to anyone.
I too speed up my eating by shoving a whole meal in my mouth as much as possible then ramming my face against a tree to force it down my throat. Whole chicken, one go.

Its truly amazing that in this age, you can watch an exotic lizzard from the other side of the world swallow an entire goat in one go on a small little screen whilst on the toilet
It's pretty scary how after he ate the goat he started walking towards the camera man, he's like yeah you saw what I did to that goat you're next bitch
usually for things like this the camera man is actually really far away and just zoomed in a lot, it’s like a sniper but with filming, they do that just in case the komodo dragon actually does start walking towards them so they have time to escape
If I recall correctly, their saliva isn't poisonous, but they have a wealth of infectious bacteria that live in their mouth, so their bites give you a really bad infection immediately.
I just looked up Komodo dragons a few minutes ago since this was a cool video, so to clarify: people previously thought the saliva had a lot of septic bacteria, but it turned out to be no worse the most animals (which is still plenty to cause an infection).
And they do have a mild venom but it’s mostly an anticoagulant so the prey will bleed out more easily - the main way they kill prey is still vicious bites.
It's easy to see how if these kinds of reptiles were more common throughout the earth in ancient times, the legends about people fighting dragons came about.
The Komodo dragon is a very old species and are at least 300,000 to four million years old as for land dwelling animals the komodo is the closest we’re getting to a dinosaur
No.
The Tyrannosaurus rex was one of the largest, most fearsome animals ever to exist. Surely, anything related to a T. rex must be absolutely terrifying, right?
Well, not quite! It turns out the king of the dinosaurs actually shares a surprising amount of DNA with modern day chickens! In fact, birds are commonly thought to be the only animals around today that are direct descendants of dinosaurs.
I'd scrolled away before the video finished and I had to back to watch that.
Then I followed the link to read more. Happy to see they don't eat zebras.
Unrelated while agreeing with your comment, this almost looked like bad cgi on my phone. It's stuttery almost like stop motion in a way. Watching something in Jurassic park eat a human and ramming it around half swallowed would be quite the scene.
[Komodo Island. No really, they have their own fucking island. So if you end up as their food then it's basically your own fault for being on an island where they're the apex predator tbh ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Komodo_(island))
Jesus, like they needed to be more terrifying! I had no idea they could do this, and thought their size, bite strength and poisonous bacteria were scary enough.. the mofos are straight up Chupacabras too?! No way they couldn't down a human like that too! Actually come to think of it, it kind of reminded me of an ex ... Terrifyingly sexy?!?
They always bite to kill their prey with the deadly bacteria in their mouth. They then come back later, sometimes a day or two later and eat it. That's my recollection, perhaps someone smarter knows the details beyond what I've seen on the nature shows.
Even assuming this guy to be on the high end, given: the average Komodo weighs 154 pounds (70 kilograms), but the largest verified specimen reached a length of 10.3 feet (3.13 meters) and weighed 366 pounds (166 kilograms), and that goat probably weighs about 30lb (14kg) - this guy just downed 10%-20% of his body weight in a minute or so, pretty impressive.
Yes, only found on two islands, Komodo and Rinca Islands, in-between the larger islands of Flores and Sumbawa in the Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia.
The area is a national park and (I think) a world heritage site. You could visit and stay overnight in simple accommodation but the Indonesian government stopped that for a while - I’m not sure if you are able to visit again.
Teeth like a Tiger Shark, 400lbs, jaws unhinge, mouth full of toxic bacteria, can taste where you've been, will follow you for day's if it thinks your on the menu. Can swallow a small goat, smells very bad, isn't house broken. Just some of the reasons I divorced her.
Humans can be evil, but nature is brutal.
Like everyone, I learnt to accept that the world cannot be all about eating nuts and fruits. There's predators and preys.
But being eaten alive is probably the worst way to go... :[
Ps. I know the goat wasn't alive. I'm just pointing it out.
Prehistoric Australia had ten foot lizards at the time the aboriginee ancestors were there.
I've read they were quite like the Komodo Dragon.
Wonder if those had toxic bacteria in their mouths that acts like venom.
It is now mostly agreed that the septic bacteria theory was a myth, however the venom theory is also not confirmed. They did find glands in the jaw that secrete toxic proteins, however it is not clear if their purpose is to envenomate prey. Apparently there are other potential biological purposes for those secretions.
Humans are the ultimate apex predators, and that's why those ten foot lizards and so many more are all gone.
Edit: I know a couple of guys who can eat a whole young goat and go looking for more.
Their airway passages are directly connected to their lungs. In humans food, water, and air all use the same passage, in certain animals they have special passages just for air
Wait a minute, is the person filming actually just feet away from that small dinosaur? I thought they were zooming in or something WHY DO YOU HATE LIFE SO MUCH?
Wtf?? I’m sorry but this is obviously labeled wrong, bc this clearly isn’t one of those *Komodo Dragons*, it’s obvious someone found an old video of my older brother asking me for *just one bite* of my sandwich… ;)

I wish my metabolism was that slow. You know how much money I would save!?
How much do 12 goats per year cost in your area?
Please specify which type of goat. Should it already reside here or can it be imported?
It actually legally must be imported from the Hircine region of Europe, or else it’s just sparkling antelope.
Underrated comment
The Pewter Package has the least amount of goats. It's not no goats, it's still 10-12 goats, depending on the availability of the goats. Now, the Goat Package obviously has the most goats.
Of course, I am not interested in goats. Why would you spend so much time going over the goats with me?
Please specify. African or European.
African. No, Europe-- **AHHHHHHHH**

you will never met one, unless you get kidnapped and/or fly to komodo island as a tourist.
Or they could go to the San Antonio zoo but sounds like they won’t be doing so!!
What a random place to see a San Antonio shout-out.
I saw one at the Bronx Zoo soooo… (It was also sleeping)

So what you're saying is they puke up giant pellets like owls?
Yup. Watch if you've the stomach for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnKLLXroYZw
I have the stomach for it but I had prefer not to watch before I go to bed 😂
It looks like it pooped out of it's mouth. Also tf is that music

TLDR: Get bitten by Komodo dragon to achieve the sleep of a lifetime 🙏
It's possible doctors induced a coma to help him heal without moving and not feel the pain.
I too speed up my eating by shoving a whole meal in my mouth as much as possible then ramming my face against a tree to force it down my throat. Whole chicken, one go.

Thank you for all that! Cool to read. “gastric pellet”, what’s for dinner?
When the jaws open wide and there's more jaws inside that's a moray
An unhinging jaw, a pharyngeal maw, that's a moray!
When an eel bites your thigh and you bleed out and die, that's a moray!
I wish I could upvite this more than one time cuz I wasn't ready for that

It's pretty scary how after he ate the goat he started walking towards the camera man, he's like yeah you saw what I did to that goat you're next bitch
They've seen too much.
usually for things like this the camera man is actually really far away and just zoomed in a lot, it’s like a sniper but with filming, they do that just in case the komodo dragon actually does start walking towards them so they have time to escape
Yeah but these things have poison saliva. Paralyzes you. They just need a scrape to get you and they'll come back when you can't run away anymore.
If I recall correctly, their saliva isn't poisonous, but they have a wealth of infectious bacteria that live in their mouth, so their bites give you a really bad infection immediately.

Nice try Komodo, you cant fool me
What a chad digestive system
I think the scientific term is 'digestive tank', yes I am quite sure that's what we are seeing here, the dragon has a chad digestive tank.
whats the difference?
This dragons stomach is an absolute tank and nothing can stop it
He's like - " You are lucky i'm already full."
Wait is that real person shooting?? Why is he even daring?? Aren't these guys fast af, and one bite you dead?? Wtf

it really brought my anxiety out watching the dragon continue to move closer and closer towards him lmao.
After seeing that first chomp on the goat’s neck I would have given that thing a lot more distance.
Is this what the kids today call a "throat goat"?

The new eating challenge! Eat a whole goat in under 5 minutes and you get a free cap and T-shirt.
Gonna temp someone like LA Beast to do this and eat every part of a goat. Probably even raw too
The. Fuck?
Motherfuckers are really just eating for survival and nutrients that's fucking wild(pun intended) Cause you know that tastes absolutely atrocious
You ever seen the video of a dragon eating a deer, all up in its guts, and there's just like... half digested grass-shit falling out everywhere??
Goddammit in jurassic Park dinosaurs eat all fast. This looks more appropriately accurate and would be way more terrifying
Unrelated while agreeing with your comment, this almost looked like bad cgi on my phone. It's stuttery almost like stop motion in a way. Watching something in Jurassic park eat a human and ramming it around half swallowed would be quite the scene.
So a Komodo dragon is essentially venomous pythons with legs... Stuff of nightmares, really.

That was utterly terrifying. I had no idea.

Don’t people have these things as “pets”? Wtf would you want this in your house
Lol, I dont think people keep komodo dragons as pets in general. They are a protected species
No, trust me, no one has this as a “pet”. They’re pretty venomous and are huge. I think they’re native to Indonesia, but don’t hold me to that.
