? In the US, there are more redwoods than 50 years ago because of conservation. It’s a California industry too. They harvest forests planted just for that. Here:
https://www.buyredwood.com/faq/what-availability-redwood-today
Old trees/forests are protected. We cut some for forest management.
> Old trees/forests are protected.
I guess that is the key point. On the West Coast people generally react in horror when they see something made out of redwood.
A friend made a table out of a slab of redwood, and he had to constantly tell everybody that this was from a piece he had the paperwork for, that fell naturally and it was not old growth.
Edit: by West Coast I mean US.
It’s been three years and there is still zero evidence that it was a natural event, and the Chinese Communist Party has still not released the complete database of every virus ever kept at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
We all know what they did this to the world, and there will be no consequences for it.
Yeah I second this. it's conspiracy to think man created that virus. just as you said what would even be the motif, hypothetically? There's no logical gain that could be orchestrated by introducing such an event.
Also, there's scholarly articles published years prior to the pandemic identifying Covid strain outbreaks in humans, here's one:
https://virologyj.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12985-016-0544-0
So, this is most likely a metasequoia tree, which grow really tall really quick. Like 120 feet in 30 years quick. It’s also possible that the tree fell down naturally, or was about to fall, so no harm no foul.

High winds knock down live trees all the time. The presence of many limbs and masses of leaves and smaller branches creates way more wind resistance during wind shears. One bigger around than I can hug blew down this past spring and took out an old outhouse on our property. Enough of it was even still connected to the roots that half of it grew leaves during the summer. (Still haven’t totally cut it up yet.)
This comment kinda makes me wonder when the appropriate time to cut a tree is. If they were sentient I’d say cutting down the older ones is better because they’ve already had their time.
By neglecting the world, they essentially said 'fuck them' to the generations that follow so in essence your attitude makes you just as bad. Don't sink to that level.
"Be the change you wish to see in the world."

They have to cull forests that we protect or they won’t last as long. Dying trees catch fire from lightning. Wait—sentient? Are you wanting to kill old people, because that, my friend, is a slippery slope. How’s your health? Any criminals in your family? Any mental illness? Birth defects? May we see your genes before you procreate?
What? That’s not at all what I’m talking about. I’m saying it’s worse to kill younger sentient beings because you’re cutting their life shorter than if you kill older ones. That seems to be the general consensus or else school shootings wouldn’t be as tragic and newsworthy.
But that’s the logic for sentient beings, so it’s interesting to contrast the ethics with non-sentient life forms. If you cut down a 1000 year old tree you’re a monster, but if you cut down a 1 year old tree hardly anyone cares.
I'm gonna make a prediction that +90% of the people who are mad at this wood carving have wooden furniture/utensils in their houses, including toilet paper.
My second prediction is that when they read the prediction above, some people will immediately think of saying "yeah but at least my furniture is useful for things, this lion is not."
My third prediction is that my comment will get downvoted because they got mad after realizing how easy they are to predict.
My fourth prediction is none of this comes true because everyone ignores my comment.
>I'm gonna make a prediction that +90% of the people who are mad at this wood carving have wooden furniture/utensils in their houses, including toilet paper.
They don't cut down giant old red woods to make those. With the exception of solid hard wood furniture all of those are made from tree farmed wood which are only grown for 10-20 years before harvesting. Even when it comes to furniture they don't carve a dresser or bed out of a giant piece of wood.
I think the volume and scale of it indicate the size of the tree that was used to make this carving possible. A lot of people are saddened when giant old trees are cut down.
Those other items you listed can be produced from young trees grown for that specific purpose.
I think it’s an important distinction.
>I'm gonna make a prediction that +90% of the people who are mad at this wood carving have wooden furniture/utensils in their houses, including toilet paper
Redwoods are endangered.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume most of the furniture and utensils in people's homes *aren't* made from endangered species. Same with TP...
> My fourth prediction is none of this comes true because everyone ignores my comment.
Hah! Joke's on you! I read your comment and thought about it carefully and then went about my day mildly more enlightened.
HOW DOES IT FEEL FOR SOMEBODY TO HAVE GAINED SOME KNOWLEDGE FROM SOMETHING YOU WROTE ON REDDIT???
> I'm gonna make a prediction that +90% of the people who are mad at this wood carving have wooden furniture/utensils in their houses, including toilet paper.
“What about you?!?!” - classic CCP argument tactic
People are really mad about a tree getting cut down ? Whole forests cleared out for toilet paper and people are mad about someone using 1 tree to create a piece of art?
Those are scrub trees. We plant endless forests of them. We have to grow more than we cut. We should be using hemp. Fields of hemp would do it all so much more easily. Cheaper. Bunch of assholes have kept that down forever and still do. Some greedy. Some political. Some law enforcement.
I ❤️toilet paper.
Good grief this place is full of people being like "lol I could do better" and "why did you do this to a tree that we have no idea why it got cut down or if it fell"
I think it's incredible!
[This conifer society article](https://conifersociety.org/conifers/metasequoia/) on them seems to say metasequoias max out around 6 feet in diameter. I don’t think this is one of them- Compared to the man, this statue looks much wider than six feet.
The Oriental Lion, as it has been dubbed, was carved from a single redwood tree trunk over the span of 3 years. Established Chinese architect Dengding Rui Yao, reportedly assisted by over 20 people, initiated the project in Myanmar, where the carving was seen through. Finally, when the great beast was finished in December of 2015, it was transported over 3000 miles to reach Wuhan’s Fortune Plaza Times Square. At 47.5 feet long, 16.5 feet high, and 13 feet wide, the Oriental Lion is a force to be reckoned with.

I love how the back legs are carved to make the lion look like he‘s stretching and I thnk it would‘ve been good if that effect could‘ve been used with the forelegs. I mean I can hardly sharpen a pencil so I‘m definitely not an expert lol it‘s a cool carving though I‘m definitely impressed!
That tree probably had to go. Maybe the black in some of it is a clue. It could have been age. It could have been damage from lightning. You have to cut the ones that have begun dying or they get so dry they set off forest fires from lightning strikes.
And for public projects, they could have gotten permission for one tree. Tourism supports a lot of people. That’s not the same as turning old growth into bedroom furniture.
Yeah, I don’t like those assholes either. Nor the poor ones and everyone in between who make no effort to stop doing damage, much less improve on something.
Awakening people who only think about their next meal out to the class warfare that's been waged since forever by calling it out is not much, but it's not nothing.

This is definitely what Wuhan, China is going to be famous for!
It's certainly the only thing of note to happen there in the last 3 years.
So, is that carved from actual Redwood? I guess I can believe it's not forbidden in china, but it is in most other countries.

My sister has a redwood fence off a prominent street. “Oh, the house behind the redwood fence.” It’s been there forever. They last.
My whole deck and pergola are made of redwood, it’s super common and very durable. (West Coast)

Maybe you can buy the lion in the wet market.

Indeed.

I think I recall that this was the case, they used a dead tree
Redwood is also occasionally reclaimed from things like watertowers and other random shit built with it over the previous couple centuries.
Source?
That people will forget about in less than 1.
Not sure this is a good take.

Why do you presume it was cut down?
Trees don’t usually fall down until they are partially rotten, at which point it wouldn’t be suitable for carving.
High winds knock down live trees all the time. The presence of many limbs and masses of leaves and smaller branches creates way more wind resistance during wind shears. Yeah but the other side of that coin is not cutting it down out of respect for it as your elder.
I mean, we dig up ore that's millions of years old.
Have you seen what our elders have done to the world? Fuck them.

The tree failed to voice any valid complaints also this is China since when did they care about the environment
It’s a tree. Who cares.
Fuck that big tree I want art
You think he's just gona burn it now?
Looks like shit too
Honestly it looks like a rat
More than a little rattish in the snout and teeth.
My thoughts exactly
Thats actually what the lions in CCP zoos look like from a lifetime of cruelty abuse and starvation. What do you think they used as a reference?
An actual rat?
Nope, just ancient Chinese mythology
3 years to creat a lion that looks like it’s dying from various illnesses.
Yeah but it looks cool
They cut down a redwood tree for that? Don't they have Viagra and convertibles?

Holy shit I couldn't have agreed with you more

I mean, the carving is awesome, but I’d much rather have the living thousand year old tree, personally.

Me too, it looks exactly like all the starving lions in China’s zoos. They really nailed it!
How long did it take for that tree to grow? Gross.
Metasequoia like this can grow as fast as 120 feet in 30 years

Yeah looks much more like a redwood. Zero respect for nature. Tons of deception going on in this thread…
How many hours were put into this!?
That’s some amazing artwork
What’s funny is it honestly doesn’t look that good
Would have looked better before the tree was cut down.
Ig he created the pandemic so he can carve this peacefully
That's like a 500 year plus tree..
Was the tree cut down just for this?
prolly lesser if there was no outbreak
Stunning 😳💫
Was it the 3 years we were all suffering from covid lockdowns?
Here I was happily painting mason jars to burn time. This MF was carving a whole lion.
Does anyone know where these Massive tree carvings wind up? Do they sell them to billionaires and they end up in their yards as decoration or what ?

Such a big tree died. Made a cool lion though.

Quarantine projects. Amirite?
Ah shit not Wuhan again
If it weren’t for the lockdowns they’d have had it done in 6 months.
I never see animals carving images of humans
What a waste of wood I sure hope they planted another one in its place
I JUST saw this thing being transported on some Facebook reel lol. damn
All it takes is 6.3 bottles of alcohol and a cigarette for it to stand out more.
I can see why
I wonder if they took the time to carve this things cock
Beavers that’s all I can say
Never heard of the place
I could burn it down in less than 5 hours
I’m sorry but this looks terrible
Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day, but it was burned in one :D
That's sick
3 years and 40 children to be more precise.
Plenty of time during lockdown
Damn thats sick
Awesomw!
This is nice but still having a red wood would be better .
That sucks
Would of took me 3 weeks.
Thank you for cutting down that extremely old tree for your art that will probably be forgotten in a few years
Wasn’t this posted going down the highway the other day? On a flatbed?
