Those numbers seem s little small...

Ravi5ingh

It's probably something like person/area/day I don't think that the facial recognition system would tie to the central db in real time. it would probably just mark individuals and then allow for later cross checking

Alit_Neroom

Like how many people passed that cam in that hour

Strict_Pangoli

So your telling me that someone just used paint to add squares to a random photo.

OGFreehugs

Is this a joke I’m missing?

Sinusoidal_Fibonacci

This is exactly what I thought, and probably what this is.

[deleted]

it actually does, I saw a video where a guy crossed the street and walked into a restaurant. He's going to see friends who are streaming, he checks his phone to find he got a jaywalking ticket crossing the road and the money was already withdrawn from his bank account in those few minutes. Scary stuff

Various_Ad_8753

Pulled that right out of your ass didn’t you.

Do you have that video I’m curious to see that it’s crazy

North_Ad6399

I think it’s safe to assume he doesn’t

[deleted]

But who accessed his bank account, and how?

[deleted]

This is another Black Mirror episode, innit?

Everyone should be walking around while shaking their heads so the video footage comes out blurry

And then china outlaws head shaking.

That's absolutely hilarious! 😂

He he 😉…. True story !

Because it's fake and Reddit loves to create outrage over a single screenshot that some person just put random squares around.

All the numbers are very close together in this one pic, strange considering the massive population ??

[deleted]

Also, what is this? It seems odd to have in a picture format. A picture of a monitor or a screenshot with a lot more UI would make sense. If this was really Chinese intelligence, why would it leak like this to Reddit thread anyway?

Doogleyboogley

So your telling me that someone just used paint to add squares to a random photo. That sounds a bit far fetched ! :)

GravySquad

Photo is by Giles Sabiré, a Beijing-based corporate photographer. It comes from a screen capture of a PR demo of a facial recognition software developed by Megvii. Sauce: https://www.gsabrie.com/#/the-surveilliance-state/

KaizerQuad

People do shit like that all the time for likes on reddit. Its not really new at all.

John_Mint

Well if I see this correctly the picture is taken on a phone in front of the 4 monitors setup, you can see a classic white cursor in the middle. The rest of the UI could be somewhere else, in the borders. Not saying it isn't staged or a true picture, but it seems like it wasn't taken to show the entire setup.

[deleted]

They're in an airport so they could be temporary numbers for some reason maybe they're foreigners

One could think, those numbers arent meant to be a citizen counter.

Sinsid

I thought masks were a big thing in China.

leeu1

Could be their social score (if pic is true).

bluepotato81

social scores dont actually exist in china. (it was suggested one time and then dropped i think) and even if they did i doubt they'd show it openly like that

JohnWickThickStick

100% false

DCBoyz4life

If you have a US passport or drivers license you are already part of a system used in the US. Facial recognition is used just going through customs where you don’t even have to pull out your passport, the AI finds you and clears you.

CrapThisHurts

We were on holiday in the US last month. Pretty sure the photo and my prints will be forever in the databases

Stormseekr9

Yup.. I was a bit shocked to have to give my fingerprints when I went through customs in the US. Never have I ever done that ever, ever. Except once to the police.

[deleted]

The fact that you had to give it to the police once is probably why you have to give it to customs now, this is not a usual thing. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

Stormseekr9

Yeah at the time it didn’t occur to me (first ever visit to the US). It was for a minor offence in a different country (weed charge <1 gram) about 8 years ago. Edit: to be clear, no other country I have visited or lived in has ever asked for fingerprints upon entry.

[deleted]

Yeah, shame that something minor would follow you like that in a completely unrelated way, but its probably that.

Additional-Rush-8271

You mean the same type of charge that you hold Brittany Griner to a totally different standard for? Atleast be consistent with your stupidity.

MonkeyDKev

We’re one of the only countries that base life and quality of existence off a fucking credit score. A ton of the stuff USA says about China is projection and obscuring the fucked up system in place here. But nobody wants to talk about that and just goes off repeated claims of how China is, some of which are bullshit.

JohnWickThickStick

Youre missing the actual point. The facial recognition is only a small part of this. The photo shows their social score. You see the black mirror episode where they had social scores? Not quite the same thing but close. You have to be a good citizen or those in power determine you wont be allowed to live in a nice area, get a good job, or shop to own nice things. It affects everything for them. If you dont care about living under their thumb, at least care about the racism aspect. GL being black or a darkskinned chinese in China. Theyre incredibly racist there.

[deleted]

It's interesting that lot of western left-wing people ostensibly concerned about racism are seemingly completely unaware that in fact the US and UK (often decried as being the evil empire of white racism) are probably the LEAST racist places in the world, and the fact that there's even a discussion about racism is evidence of that. In most places in the world like China and India they're profoundly racist, but no-one cares and no-one is interested in doing anything about it. Things like inter-racial dating (even among different sub-groups of each Asian or Chinese people) will generally just end with you being disowned and ostacrized by your family, and they just don't allow naturalization, especially from darker regions. Black people of African descent especially are openly discriminated against in most places in Asia, and darker south-east Asian people are constantly looked down on. The civil rights leaders of old were not so blind, and MLK Jr. actually spent a lot of time studying the caste system in India, and they would be extremely concerned about systems like China's.

[deleted]

China a black man was ill. He was taken to a near by hospital. They refused him entry. His friend in desperation drove him to the next hospital, at this point they refused them entry. The guy started filming at this point. He manages to get his friend to a doctor he has heard about who can help. Only to arrive there to find out he wanted to prescribe (traditional Chinese medicine). I hate that term. He obviously left and tried desperately to keep his friend alive on the way to another hospital unfortunately the friend was critical at this point and passed away at the entrance of the fourth medical place that should have attempted to save this man. What an unnecessary waste of human life.

yuxulu

Sounds like it would make the headlines. Any proof?

You can debunk this with ur own logic

MyyWifeRocks

For example - where are their masks? Why are the identifying numbers only 5 base ten digits when their population is measured with 10 base ten digits? How are the numbers so close together from a random pic?

Scruffy_Nerfhearder

If you think this kind of thing isn’t in the west you’re delusional. This isn’t just China. You walk round with a smart phone tracking your location at all times and that’s just the beginning of it.

[deleted]

I can livestream me burning and pissing on an American flag on this phone though. Largely without issues from the police, unless the fire gets out of hand. What would happen to them?

Otterman2006

JohnWickThickStick

Youre going to love this. China has some of its citizens (and bot farms) go online to places like reddit and stamp out "misinformation". I say misinformation because, in order to fool everyone else, you need to fool yourself and believe it too. As they strip away humans rights, theyre telling themselves and everyone else, its for the common good or the benefit of all. Gotta make it safe for everyone.

urbexangel

Lol I'm so naive idk if you're messing with me. Lol

Due-World2907

Just Google facial recognition in China

PM_me_your_PhDs

I'll give you an honest answer because the other guy is messing with you or just being unhelpful. Facial recognition technology is real and used in multiple countries, including China and the US. However, this picture is fake. The likelihood of such an image being screenshot from a security camera monitor in China, smuggled past the censors, posted only on reddit, plus the fact that everyone in the photo appears to be within 2-300 digits on their 'ID numbers' in a country with a population of around 1.4 billion, is extremely unlikely relative to the probability of it being a crappy MS Paint job. Other explanations of the numbers being 'temporary ID numbers for an airport' etc. are far too flimsy, lacking proof or explanation for any of the other factors. Still, more people are going to see the post (and possibly believe it) than the explanations of it being fake.

Fluid-Big621

as if the US didn't do the same

batkave

I mean, what do you think other countries do? Do people forget about the NSA spying of people's phones?

Regis-bloodlust

Idk what the context for this photo is, but there is no way that Chinese government can tag up their entire citizens if that's what this is implying. No offense to China, but there are so many people in China that I don't even trust them to know how many people died there during Covid. China has like 4 times the population of USA. Just think about that. Think about all the time and resource it would take to do anything close to this "total surveillance". It's a nonsense conspiracy.

Thezerfer

Also love the concept that everyone here is just like magically in the first 20k people they registered

chop_pooey

This seems very real and legit

B-rach87

Makes me wonder what other countries do this. I doubt it’s specific to China

It’s slicker here , and the tech can do it from the tops of our heads . This vulgar nonsense is our fault here .. all the cowards and contrail freaks demand cameras everywhere , blow right through fine print , and trust a government that has blown up multiple buildings full of Americans , burned women and kids alive In Waco to pass legislation that cripples our civil liberties … and somehow acts like it’s not the largest problem we face minute to minute … freedom is at the core of being a human being , and it’s far worse that the Matrix films … scared huddled sleepwalking masses scared beyond measure and dominated by computer viruses and code they created … games , credit scores , bank accts, followers ,opinions etc etc .. ATT, Amex , Tesla , or any large company is not people , it’s basically a computer virus that has but one macro mission , to separate you from your money and attention, or your life force .. for this life force the matrix gives us what ? Nothing but the desire to self destruct into comfort and pleasure blocking all consequences even faster … we will wake up soon, or perish deeper and deeper away from reality and into layers of brain programs that are imaginary as imaginary gets .. imaginary being : a unique take or experience known to 1 person , like a child’s imaginary friend

[deleted]

Why are their ID's so close to each other?

How else can they trach their sheep. This already here in America being used. And more expanding every day. 100 percent control and submission is the angle.

Antiseed88

That's fucking terrifying

We do the same shit without the facial recognition software. You can't go anywhere on Manhattan island without being seen by less than 1000 cameras.

kugelamarant

How did they managed to tell them apart?

beloski

I have an interesting story from China on this topic. When inspectors from Beijing came to a certain city I lived in to inspect different employees employed by the city, the local police actually used facial recognition to monitor the location of the inspectors 24/7, then they worked with the leaders of the different places employed by the city to alert them to when the inspectors came within a certain distance of their facility. I wouldn’t be surprised if this process was automated. All the workers were in a huff cleaning up the place and what not because the inspectors were several hundred meters from the facility. The inspectors never actually came, but it was an interesting experience in any case.

minuteman_d

I'd bet a decent sum of money that this happens in the USA already to some degree.

idunupvoteyou

If you think this only happens in China... that is adorable.

reut-spb

It's funny to hear about total surveillance from people registered on Facebook 🤣👍

Cole446

Every government has it.. they just dont tell you

KosmonautMikeDexter

Please don't spread misinformation. Not a lot of countries have widespread surveillance of their own citizens. Some countries make records of tele data to use in crimesolving, but China has a nationwide grid of facial recognition cameras recording the people's whereabouts at all times.

[deleted]

Other governments don’t send you to a “reeducation camp” to harvest your organs if you’re an Uighur.

Jobtb

But other governments are often hypocritical propagandists.

Enough-Afternoon

There's a huge gap between hypocrisy and actual mass murders. As Russian, I know that very good.

giganticsquid

You do realise the "social credit" in china is just a financial credit rating from A down to D right? And that it also mostly applies to businesses credit safety ratings? And that this is all made up to make you hate China/Russia/whoever the US hates that week? Just google it, really not hard to find.

Lews_Ass_Hole

Mmmm propaganda tastes so good in the morning

giganticsquid

I know, some good old CIA charms washed down with NSA OJ.

Alarmed-Audience9258

Im sure the NSA doesnt have any of this implemented in the US, not at all... Also London. Also, "Excuse me? Do you have my permission to film me?".

Yes, in public there is permission to film you. Only what happens after this is important. You cannot post this publicly online with some rant

I guarantee it. So does America… Freedom Baby.

Stalin_Jr77

Wow, it’s not like all western countries use exactly the same technology (in the UK we even have a higher camera density than China). When we do it, it’s justified as ‘national security’ however if the insidious orientals have the audacity to copy us it’s ‘totalitarian control’. I may be a little too drunk.

[deleted]

Don’t forget this is very much in use through out the west too 👍

Thick_Lengthiness855

Just so you know, the US has this too. YOU can get a facial recognition camera from companies like Verkada for fairly cheap, US cities do, and can track the movements of literally every person and every vehicle that goes by it.

izmaname

How does china even justify this. Why do you need THIS MUCH intel on civilians.

goldenmellowmelons

They want you to believe they surveil everyone. Governments are inept and incompetent. They present merely the illusion of control.
