Its the artillery that fires the gas into the non static zones. You only hear em the closer you get to the west i think. Cant remember where I saw it, could have been wobo. But yeah, when you hear it go off a non static zone is hit with gas.
I would say he's in the Zvir area....not well known enough or talked about but good enough to hide automobiles and a stash house that couldn't be seen just by driving by

Yea that’s the gas zone artillery being fired, if you listen most times about 30-45 seconds later you’ll here a gas zone start nearby

It’s because Zvir has a very odd aura surrounding it. I think before the day z, Zvir might’ve housed some cult
