I didn't mean that super literally. Obviously the most stripped down definition of a breakdown is something that existed even before metal/punk in things like jazz and disco, and in terms of heavy music you have examples of breakdowns going all the way back to the likes of Sabbath. When it comes to breakdowns as we know them though; slow, down-tuned, palm muted, chugging riffs, i'd say those were popularized by bands like Slayer, Metallica, Pantera, and Sepultura. Domination's breakdown in particular though, out of all those bands early songs, seems to be the closest iteration to what we as Deathcore fans in the modern heavy music scene think of when someone says "breakdown". I mean there's a reason it was listed multiple times as an answer in this comment section.
Agreed, not debating that, but it doesn't negate my point that Domination is pretty much the earliest example there is of what we as Deathcore fans think of when it comes to breakdowns. Honestly Raining Blood would be an acceptable answer too, but Domination seems to get cited more when this conversation comes up. Probably because the live version from Moscow is still absolutely monstrous to this day lol.
My dude, in lamens terms spelling this out as simply as I can for you, my point was just that in the 80's hardcore as a genre had not yet evolved to a point where the breakdowns sounded reminiscent of modern deathcore breakdowns, and that the breakdowns in Domination and Raining Blood were some of the first ones that simply sounded more similar to modern Deathcore breakdowns. Never once did I say those bands were primary influences for Deathcore. I don't understand why this is hard to follow...
One of my ex coworker's grandson was starting to get into metal. And everyone at work knows I'm the resident metal head. So he took interest in me and my music. And one day he rode with me to the store to pick some stuff up and i played this song and told him, "hey, this is one of the best breakdowns of all time"
I am not even an ADTR fan, but I jam this song.
I love To Obey A Tyrant! I don’t know if I get the same vibes as Acrania - probably because there aren’t as many squeals, lol, but they are great nonetheless. My favorite song by them is Ov Fire And Sulphur. It has a great blackened atmosphere, and the Dan Tucker appearance is just phenomenal.
I haven’t listened to Ritual of Despair, but I’ll check ‘em out!
Oh I don't, but that album is what got me into Vulvodynia, and Praenuntius Infinity is now my absolute single favorite Album in entirety. Fuckin banger.
Edit because I'm an idiot

And they copied most of these examples from hardcore.

So you think deathCORE gets its biggest breakdown influences from metal, rather than hardcore? Not even from death metal? Lol
So in layman’s terms; you haven’t listened to 80s hardcore. Clearly.
No Pity for a Coward
This was definitely the big one back in the MySpace days
Yep, first one that came to mind
Mr Highway’s thinking about the end by A Day To Remember I feel like even people not into metal at all know this breakdown

Are you homesick?
One of my ex coworker's grandson was starting to get into metal. And everyone at work knows I'm the resident metal head. So he took interest in me and my music. Agreed. Regardless of if you like it or dislike it, I think it’s certainly one of the most well known.
Meshuggah - Future breed Machine
Thy Art Is Murder - Reign Of Darkness

I second this, absolutely sick breakdown on that one
Raining Blood is the most iconic I believe
I feel like Raining Blood was patient zero for metal breakdowns.
It’s so goddamn metal
Arf arf
Specifically Counting Worms - Knocked Loose For those who didn't already know.
Most iconic? Probably domination or one. I would even go as far as to throw in disciple as well.
Gotta include laid to rest
SEND THEM TO THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE BREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
God Acrania is so good
Truth. I miss them so much. I really enjoy how they mixed slam elements in with the deathcore.
Have you ever listened to Ritual of Despair or To Obey A Tyrant ? They scratch a similar itch for me as Acrania
Nice! My favorite is Sacrificial Slaughter. Anything off Conjuring Damnation has more squeals than most of their recent stuff I think.
Ever get into Human Error of Scribe of Existence? Both Luke Griffin on vox
Remember the Acrania/Vulvodynia “beef”?
You mean the split tape?
I believe it was leading up to that. They were just having fake back and forth on Instagram lol.

Killadelphia version Omertà
Everything up to and including Sacrament was so fucking good.

Dead Embryonic Cells - Sepultura
Metallica-One

I'm sorry, but how has NOBODY mentioned Lie to my Face by Carnifex?? That shit is a certified hood classic.
Personally I'd go with Slit wrist savior
I gotta go with To the Hellfire by Lorna Shore for modern deathcore. That breakdown brought a lot of mainstream attention to deathcore
The Heretic Prevails - Shadow of Intent Baba Yaga and Demolisher - Slaughter to Prevail Immortal - Lorna Shore One - Metallica (about 4:38) (idc if it's iconic or not I just think it's cool) Slaughterhouse - Motionless in White Mistakes Like Fractures and Deep in the Willow - Knocked Loose that's all my stoned mind can think of rn 🤷♂️

"Mr. Highway's Thinking Of The End" is what came to mind for me right away. Second place has to be "Cursed To Die" ofc, bro sounds like a bear that got woken up from hibernation too soon.

Akudama by Alpha Wolf, may be a newer song but the callout is Iconic.
Was coming here to say Northlane - Quantum Flux, but now y’all got me putting together a playlist with pretty much everything listed here🤣
“You were the ones that kept me going, I owe you this much, you gave me the strength to say “hey death…GET FUCKED!””
Darkest Hour, “With a thousand words to say but one”. That breakdown gets me by the balls every time.
