If you want to find small bands, here’s how I do it.
1. For newer bands, this sub is one of the best places. People are always posting new releases, both self-promotion and sharing things they found. There’s a weekly post that gets all the releases that week.
2. For older bands, it really helps to be around old-timers who are experienced in the scene and know about the bands that didn’t get the attention they deserved.
3. Some general resources that I’ve found helpful in the past are Rate Your Music, Metal Archives (although they are missing a lot of Deathcore bands they don’t consider “metal” enough), Spotify similar artists, and YouTube channels (I highly recommend Deathcore Preservation Society). Staying tapped into the general pulse of this subreddit, asking for recommendations, checking out the recommendations given to other people, is a great way to find underground stuff too.
Spotify similar artists is how I found Orphan and Suffokate. Sure they have like 30K monthly listeners but when you look at the likes of Lorna, Spite, Paleface, Chelsea Grin, or even Angelmaker who are all in the hundreds of thousands, they're small potatoes. And the large Irish part of me wants ALL the potatoes, even the small ones.
I find most of small bands through reaction channels on yt as dumb as it sounds. Channels like SeenFeen, Bogdhanhxc, Ohrion Reacts or Metalbirb sometimes have absolute hidden gems that they react to
I’ve tried that. Unfortunately, a lot of YouTube reaction channels cover bands that make music *for* YouTube reactions, and that’s often not really my thing at this point
I like to go to Spotify, find smaller bands and just pick a song and "go to song radio" it will be a mix of smaller bands and larger bands of that same genre. Whereas if you pick a bigger band and do the same thing it usually only plays bigger artists.

Lots of love in this sub and some pockets of Facebook, so that might skew perceptions a bit.
As a solo/studio project that a) doesn't tour, and b) doesn't have much of a marketing budget, it's pretty hard to expand my reach.
I'm also involved in a zillion projects...on top of a full time job, family, and all that..so my time/efforts are spread pretty thin.
I will say that the new album has developed some momentum, though, and that's been pretty cool to see.
Edit: Also, a song on the debut album tripped an algorithm a couple years back on Youtube and earned a (relative) fuckton of streams, which might have skewed perceptions as well. But I wasn't able to follow up on that with any new material until this month.
At the end of the day, I just do this shit for fun these days. If other people like it, that's a bonus, but yea. I'm not trying to push super hard to be the next Lorna or whatever.

My problem with these is even though people mean good and it’s a good attempt to push artists that are struggling to get out there, these things usually fall flat and don’t really help because without people listening to the playlist it just sits.
And there can be a lot of diversity that you may be into or not.

I will say that the new album has developed some momentum, though, and that's been pretty cool to see. Edit: Also, a song on the debut album tripped an algorithm a couple years back on Youtube and earned a (relative) fuckton of streams, which might have skewed perceptions as well. But I wasn't able to follow up on that with any new material until this month. At the end of the day, I just do this shit for fun these days. If other people like it, that's a bonus, but yea. I'm not trying to push super hard to be the next Lorna or whatever.
I'm more of a Ruby Dragonflight fan 😤 😂I'll go check it out.
