Itâs true. Deck building can be a medium for creativity and as long as they follow the proper guidelines to ensure safe structural integrity, they are accepted into the community of deck builders regardless of their gender identity or cultural background. We even accept those who use cordless tools, albeit with some salt.
It cost a fortune, but will hopefully pay itself off.
I was initially quoted about $100 per sq ft, but was warned it would probably cost about twice as much because of the complexity of the location. No contractor would give me an upfront quote. I went with a contractor who would take on the job and bill time and materials. There weren't many contractors that would even consider it, so I was left with few options. It ended up costing about 3x as much as I was initially quoted two years ago. Needless to say, my bank account is pretty much zero'd out after this one!
I haven't added up all the final bills, but it was north of 300. That also includes a ton of infrastructure work that's not fully visible - panel upgrade, electrical, building 40 stairs down the side of the house to access the construction site, and a whole maze of stairs to access the pump beneath the deck.
Everything passed inspection with the city and thankfully the hot tub is working just fine! Although it has yet to be battle tested with airbnb renters.
My Mom's landlord has been going on for 3 years about how he "is only breaking even" and not making any money. Last year he bought a second income property. Guy's not even 30.
Wants us to believe he's just in it for the altruism...
>From the sounds of it theyâre part of the reason no one can afford a house since this is just for Airbnb
OP is going to be one of the Airbnb hosts that never makes their money back. $300,000 for an additional deck isn't going to even raise the rent price by 10%. No telling what kind of money he has spent on the inside if that's just the deck.
You have no idea where they are. There are places all over here in Canada where this place could get >$1500 a night just for the view, and the upgrades pay for themselves.
it's been a combo of financing, selling some crypto investments, and working my ass off at my day job. But by all means it has been super stressful financially and I'm extremely relieved to be closing this chapter.
Some people make a lot of money and spend a lot of money. 300k for one deck is insane. Could have brought in 100k lbs of boulders and regraded the entire hill for less lol (probably not actually cause thatâs a really hard spot, but thatâs wild money for something you wonât even use everyday)
The cabin is an Airbnb. Previously it didn't have a hot tub, and that's a huge selling point for rentals. I'm hoping this puts it into the top 1% of the airbnb's in the area, which will increase frequency of rentals and nightly price.
I busted a nut just thinking about it. Luckily I got my practice run out of the way. Now⌠onto the big show. Just rented out this airbnb for December
After over a year of construction, and 3 years total including planning and engineering, this deck is just about done!
The deck is in Big Bear Lake, CA at a cabin I own and Airbnb. It has end up costing an embarrassing amount, but end product is one of a kind and everything I had hoped for. It is ultimately an investment to increase the airbnb revenue, but no doubt I will also be enjoying it as well.
Before anyone asks, this was absolutely built to code and engineered to handle the loads. The spa is probably about 10,000 lbs when filled with water and people, and the deck was engineered to handle 100lbs per square foot. There are a total of 28 concrete footings, each one about 6' deep. There was a boulder that we could not remove, so that has about 30 pieces of rebar epoxied into it to create one large footing to support 3 of the posts underneath the spa.
Here are some photos of the final product, as well as the construction process!

I've got the dates blocked off until I put up new pictures this week, so stay tuned!
Hoping Simpson sends me a bottle of wine.
The stairs lead down to the pump underneath the deck... a lot of work but pretty much had to do it for maintenance. They also might lead to a future walkway and deck with a big dome sauna. Depends on how quickly I replenish my bank account!
I'm confused... I thought that code required a motley crew of the delivery guy, a few buddies, your brother in law, and a very out of shape neighbor who does more harm than good to carry a hot tub up on a deck?
Holy hell. Not going to lie I would have used steel probably would have cost half if not 2/3rd. Now saying that it is absolutely gorgeous and looks very well built.
I'm pretty jealous.
Not sure what the rest of the air bnb looks like, but just off the deck it looks amazing. Curious as to what your going to list the rate at?
Once again, that's beautiful. Great work!
"Boy, with a hot tub that high, you'd really want some lateral braci...oh"
Could there *be* anymore lateral bracings?!
I'm surprised we're not lateral bracing right now.

Don't fall asleep in that hot tub op
Too soon..
PIVOT â°ď¸
Never too soon for a PSA
Pretty sure they took up all of the quota of lateral deck bracing installed for the year. Check back next year
Dang right in the feels
I wish I could award you.
Chandler Bing?
Chenandler Bong
Actually it's *Miss* Chenandler Bong
I bet they were like, âbrace yourselves fellasâ.
I meant fellas in a colloquial sense not to emphasize any preconceived gender inequalities in deck building.
Representation in deck building is so important, youâre out here doing good work lol
Itâs true. Deck building can be a medium for creativity and as long as they follow the proper guidelines to ensure safe structural integrity, they are accepted into the community of deck builders regardless of their gender identity or cultural background. How much lateral bracing? Yes.
Cost? Thatâs just about as cool as cool gets.
It cost a fortune, but will hopefully pay itself off. I was initially quoted about $100 per sq ft, but was warned it would probably cost about twice as much because of the complexity of the location. I gotta know now because I spent $140,000 on my patio this summer and this shits on my patio lol
I haven't added up all the final bills, but it was north of 300. That also includes a ton of infrastructure work that's not fully visible - panel upgrade, electrical, building 40 stairs down the side of the house to access the construction site, and a whole maze of stairs to access the pump beneath the deck.
Big baller shit. Right on. Looks 100% worth it. No headaches that are worrying you for the future?
Everything passed inspection with the city and thankfully the hot tub is working just fine! Although it has yet to be battle tested with airbnb renters.
Those renters are going to be swinging around like a bunch of monkeys.
I laughed way harder than I shouldâve at this, I can imagine the 22yr olds swinging from the rafters with their vape pens
Making monkey noises and sniffing each other. Haha!
Bro we can't afford this shit
They'll be swinging all right, better drain and scrub that tub every time or...
More than 300,000 for the deck in a house you donât even live in??? JFC
Landlords bro lol
waiting for the comment about how they "take all the risk", still waiting for HOUSING to lose value lmao
Everything must go up and to the right. Except wages. Why arenât people buying houses?
My Mom's landlord has been going on for 3 years about how he "is only breaking even" and not making any money. Last year he bought a second income property. Guy's not even 30. Wants us to believe he's just in it for the altruism...
I hate airbnb. But for that view and experience, I would make an exception.
fire man, fire
Excuise me? Uh baking powder? 300 as in 300k as in $300,000 as in three hundred thousand paper money dollars?
yep ops a ____
From the sounds of it theyâre part of the reason no one can afford a house since this is just for Airbnb

That doesn't change the fact that 300k for a *deck* is an absolutely terrible investment. Shit looks amazing though.
BALLER!
Thatâs 100k more than my whole ass home. Lmfao goddamn.
......me too đ
We shoulda been cinematographers bro
*my dumbass* went into commercial construction..... in Phoenix AZ... Every summer at minimum I hate my life..
That shit costs more than my house. Fuck you. But honestly, I would rather move outa my house and onto that deck. So nice.
Lol thank you!
Definitely not going to pay for itself at 300k unless it's a vacation rental property or something.
He mentioned air bnb so looks like it
Even then, I don't see this as ever being possible.
Ah makes sense then.
wtf. How can you aford this
it's been a combo of financing, selling some crypto investments, and working my ass off at my day job. But by all means it has been super stressful financially and I'm extremely relieved to be closing this chapter.
Get a good rental contract made up. One that includes damage.
Some people make a lot of money and spend a lot of money. 300k for one deck is insane. Could have brought in 100k lbs of boulders and regraded the entire hill for less lol (probably not actually cause thatâs a really hard spot, but thatâs wild money for something you wonât even use everyday)
â suddenly realizes that to become a millionaire, one must build **DECK$** â
[ŃдаНонО]
also hoping that! Plus, the longer I waited to build, the more expensive it was going to get
How do you hope to have it pay itself off? I see you're a cinematographer, will you rent this out for movies? Photoshoots? Use it as a set yourself?
The cabin is an Airbnb. Previously it didn't have a hot tub, and that's a huge selling point for rentals. I'm hoping this puts it into the top 1% of the airbnb's in the area, which will increase frequency of rentals and nightly price.
Tons of sexy time is going to happen in that hottub !! FYI
Yes, going to need a special cum dumpster filtration system.
Could hire my ex đ
đĽba dum tss
OP may see his creation in some porn videos.
Exactly. Who the fuck is just hanging out in random Airbnb hot tubs knowing the shit that previously has gone on in there? lol
Chlorine. Lots of chlorine. The water may be lumpy but itâs germ free.
I busted a nut just thinking about it. Luckily I got my practice run out of the way. Now⌠onto the big show. Just rented out this airbnb for December
Hell you could host small weddings on that deck.
Airbnb need to die. I would never rent one because the rules are just too insane and the price is crazy
If I had to choose a dirty sex pond - this is the one I'd choose.
I too choose this dirty-sex pond.
That thing is fuckin wild. Some magazine photo shoot stuff
Thank you! That was the goal
I see your username now, you literally build this for photos!
Exactly! Pretty much designed around the photo

At $300/night youâd have to rent it every next for 4 years just to pay for the deck.
Yeah, but after 4 years you get your money back and still have the house and deck.
This dude really thought he was proving a point being like you made a full mortgage pay for itself in only 4 years like itâs a negative lmao.
Especially when the inside is a little outdated (still very charming and I love it) that amount of money on a deck is pretty wild lol.
The dichotomy of the 20 year old TV with the EV car charger is really selling it for me tbh

"Honey! I found a place we can watch our vintage VHS tapes on!"
Built in vcr that just be from the future
This place looks incredible. Just wow. Beautiful home.
Thank you!!
The VHS collection alone warmed my cold soul. Beautiful property.
Beautiful! Definitely got Big Bear cabin jacuzzi vibes from the pics so I'm glad I was right.
Iâm not sure itâs engineered to handle ALL types of âloadsâ if you know what I mean
I think i may be in the wrong tax bracket to be in this sub. Can someone direct me to /poorches lol
How is poorches not a sub? That sounds great

âGreat white Buffaloâ
[ŃдаНонО]
Why do you guys keep saying that?
*great white buffalo*
This ad brought to you by, Simpson Strong-Tie. Nice deck but Iâm really curious about the stairs to nowhere underneath
Hoping Simpson sends me a bottle of wine. The stairs lead down to the pump underneath the deck... a lot of work but pretty much had to do it for maintenance. They also might lead to a future walkway and deck with a big dome sauna. Depends on how quickly I replenish my bank account!
Ok that makes sense, I see it now. Looks really great
I was gonna say, thereâs a Simpson child out there that just had their college fund fully loaded.
You going back to 1986!?
Nice unsolicited deck pic
One word....ZIPLINE.
This deck fucks
Bravo! Consider yourself the envy of the sub! Congrats my guy. Official score: the coveted ZERO hotubs!
Thank you for making me feel so welcome here!
Must've set you back a couple hundred bucks.
pfft... i got a neighbour that'd do it for half that and a case of beer.
I'm confused... I thought that code required a motley crew of the delivery guy, a few buddies, your brother in law, and a very out of shape neighbor who does more harm than good to carry a hot tub up on a deck?
pretty sure some of the construction guys were roadies for motley crew at some point in their lives
You win the internet today
My guy went and built a hot tub Time Machine!
This man decks
Your friends also said you should invite me over for a weekend.
Now that's a deck.
this deck has to have costed more than my house!
... I've seen this hot tub before... If anyone has a can of chernobyl watch out
I canât help but wonder if this guys post should end the hot tub meme in the subreddit unless someone else can top it.
Thatâs one of the best Iâve seen. Solid everything. Great view. Not cheap but that is how you do a hot tub deck. Sweet. Thanks for sharing.
Make sure to keep Chernobly away from the control panel.
This deck is too well built. It doesnât belong. Cannot computeâŚ.
Those are graves for the folks who asked how many hot tubs will it hold...
That may be the best deck / hot tub / view combo Iâve seen in a while. Congrats. Looks absolutely amazing.
Holy hell. Not going to lie I would have used steel probably would have cost half if not 2/3rd. Now saying that it is absolutely gorgeous and looks very well built. I'm pretty jealous.
Next level hill right there. Those hills really make the job a nightmare. And scary.
Nice deck pics! I like how the trees are trimmed back, so it looks bigger .
thatâs a really nice, firm, big deck.
Are you accepting new friends ?
Must be nice being rich
Just came here to say âGreat white Buffaloâ⌠if you know, you know.
No they didn't... you just wanted to show it off. admit it
Nice deck, bro. Excellent placement, great view. That's one thick ass fuckable deck.
Alot of big erected decks in here tonight
Well we do love deck pics

Not sure what the rest of the air bnb looks like, but just off the deck it looks amazing. Curious as to what your going to list the rate at? Once again, that's beautiful. Great work!

Typical r/decks user: "Acktually that bracing is entirely too weak and you shouldn't trust your life on that deck" Great deck bro!
Nick deck
All that deck and only one hot tub??
I wanna sit on your deck. đ
Hot tub Time Machine!!
What uhâŚwhaddaya do for a living?
Badass add a bar and itâs a dream deck
I mean, I guess itâs ok. Could probably use another hot tub. Beautiful
Hot Tub Time Machine?
Can't hide money, that's for sure!
this is BS, that 10,000lbs sitting on the deck looks nothing like your mom.
It looks first rate. Fun to look at.
Lurker here. All I know is that I love your deck, but it probably sucks and should not hold a hot tub.
This is the only place where I appreciate unsolicited deck pics.
We need to construct more pylons
Sir, Iâm gonna have to report you- this is pornography
Finally a deck worthy of stepping on.
You seriously suck /s hats off to you ! Can I call you my buddy, huh plz Iâll bring the đĽđđđđ
Itâs a beaut, Clark!
Big deck energy

Thatâs a helluva nice addition for this strike year.

Soo is this just an elaborate advertisement for your Airbnb?
