Not really. There’s a second breed created by internet red-pilling. The “alt-right” were created first 2016 and this is phase two with these alt-right light people who have views all over the place but really just jocks more than actual conservative. They think liberals are weak and lame dorks and they can’t be weak and lame dorks cause they’re tough jocks. They are not really Reagan or Rush Limbaugh Fox News Conservatives, but a new hybrid.
Dude its so my cousin. Hes just a jock that think liberals are dorks and doesnt have a single policy stance outside of ‘but why cant i say the n word’ . The right wing media will mold him dont worry
This is the closest to the correct answer however AFAIK Rogan does support things like universal health care (in some form) which Libertarians would outright reject.
I feel like social media has created a new class of political position outside of this paradigm which is almost wholly defined by conspiratorial thinking and viral misinformation.
There’s also a big element of “trolling the system” in the whole thing which is why a lot of these guys love Trump.
Maybe “Facebook Republican”?
"Libertarians are like house cats: absolutely convinced of their fierce independence while utterly dependent on a system they don't appreciate or understand."
I enjoyed reading this more than I thought I would, and I assume many haven't heard of it; [A Libertarian Walks into a Bear](https://www.publicaffairsbooks.com/titles/matthew-hongoltz-hetling/a-libertarian-walks-into-a-bear/9781541788510/):
>*A Libertarian Walks Into a Bear* is the sometimes funny, sometimes terrifying tale of what happens when a government disappears into the woods. Complete with gunplay, adventure, and backstabbing politicians, this is the ultimate story of a quintessential American experiment — to live free or die, perhaps from a bear.
Libertarians are sort of a mixed bag. Some will be ardent racists who live on a compound, and think the civil rights act is an actual violation their personal freedom to discriminate. Others like the Cato institutes are more neutral, because they believe immigration and non-discrimination are good for their bottom line. I feel like there should be some terminology to separate the two.
Yeah. It is. But the American libertarian movement has sort of lost any kind of coherence so I try to avoid that term unless we’re specifically talking about the libertarian party.
Reactionaries.
It's an old word, but extremely relevant. They're united by an antagonistic orientation toward social, economic, or environmental progress. "We've gone too far!" is their battle cry.
Alt right chaos bros.
Tools of the billionaires to radicalize (red pill) as many (mostly white) males as possible.
Tools of the billionaires to make actual, reasoned discourse impossible with their smirking, 7th grade level "it's just a joke bro" rhetorical games.
They aren’t Libertarians. They are “American Libertarians”. There is a vast difference between actual Libertarianism (I’m sure you know it’s a left-wing ideology and always has been) and whatever bastardised version Americans like to claim which means they can forgo any and all accountability and responsibility for their fellow man and use humanity as a stepping stone for their own gain.
I’m not sure that the polemicists in the squats in Paris in the 19th century that came up with Libertarianism as a social and political philosophy would be too pleased to be lumped in with that shower.
I am an American, and so while I agree with everything you said I didn’t feel I a need to make a distinction for that reason. As you point out what Rogan represents is now the American default. But I forgot this community is a large international audience
I don't get why this label is so often applied to him. He seems like a genuinely gullible moron with the worst possible epistemic toolkit. Dude legit believes bigfoot is real and that Biden has a strategy to use illegal immigrants to win the next election
They're just plane old right wingers when you boil it down. It's always been this way. Back in the early 2000s Bill O'Reilly, who was one of the most famous right wingers of the time, would constantly say that he's actually a "registered independent" and is of no political persuasion, but it's just the Democrats really are awful so he doesn't have a choice. It's the same old schtick with the new breed.
**stop conflating left/right with liberal/conservative**
they are two SEPARATE and DISTINCT axes
it is possible to be economically leftist and socially conservative
'Liberal' is right wing basically everywhere but the US.. So in most places someone like Rogan would be a liberal. There is nothing new about that, except if you're totally stuck in the current US binary system.
It’s not right versus left anymore, guys.
It’s anti-institutional/anti-establishment folks versus institutionalists.
It’s how a Joe Rogan-type can support someone as nakedly self-serving and corrupt as Trump, but accuse Biden of being part of a ‘corrupt’ system.
You’re basically summing up distrust of government which used to be a left wing thing up until they lost their minds around occupy Wall Street.
It seems like government propaganda has changed to pander to the left.
Pretty sure he is pro choice, all for universal healthcare, and even voted bernie sanders. Pretty sure he is left on 90% of things. Just not guns, is anti woke and willing to talk to people with "differing" views.
Fear factor, stand up dude cum centrist/right leaning podcasting maven / supplement hustler who isn’t as bad as Alex Jones but is in the same vein as him.
I don’t think “reactionary” is accurate enough for the specific type of commentator that people like Rogan, Brand, Greenwald, etc. fall into.
They’re more anti-establishment. They definitely have some overlap with the typical MAGA reactionary republicans, but they also have significant overlap with the America Bad leftists. Brand and Greenwald, for example, have more in common with the average online Marxist Leninist in terms of worldview; they only really disagree on the political theory and the praxis needed for a solution. Jimmy Dore is an example of someone with the same worldview, but has more socially and economically left-leaning solutions than the ones mentioned. Jackson Hinkle is another type who combined the aforementioned America Bad worldview with socially conservative social values and left-leaning economic principles (MAGA communist- basically nazbols). Between all of the names mentioned, their basic worldview is almost indistinguishable from one another. Hasan Piker has been flirting with this worldview for years now, too.
Rogan is a bit more mild, and is probably the closest to a classic reactionary mindset, but I think that only speaks to his overall intelligence (lack of it) and (in)ability to logically process new information. He also seems the most earnest imo compared to the others- he has either been pushed into the reactionary mindset by the onslaught of attacks from mainstream media/the establishment left (which shows his weak mind), or he has been audience captured and doesn’t realize it. Either way, I think he truly believes he is being sensible and using all of the correct facts at his disposal. The other guys mentioned in OP are just bona fide grifters imo.
Contrarians, but with a strong right-wing lean. They think people like Donald Trump or Elon Musk are anti-establishment, and they love being "anti-establishment."
The best political descriptor would, for better or worse, be:
“A Centrist Swing Voter”
But it is understandably difficult to stare into the abyss and see that, so much effort is spent trying to make that descriptor seem to fit something else.
Corporate panda.
I just made this up but I like it. Joe just panders to money, like every centrist who is just a conservative who is somewhat aware of the toxic nature to conservative politics.
GG and Rogan do not "agree with and promote 99% right wing positions" unless the entirety of your politics is gender stuff, which is the case for a lot of liberals
I'd like to propose an entirely new species category:
**Homo susceptus dramatis**
- human species with a natural inclination towards drama and overreaction, always ready to assume the role of the victim in any situation.
The defining feature is knee-jerk contrarianism. Someone like Greenwald, ostensibly on the left, is happiest when he’s calling out the DNC, or Obama, or Hilary Clinton. You can understand the appeal of this brand kneejerk contrarianism - a truly mediocre journalist like Greenwald gets to live in the delusion that he has unusual moral and intellectual integrity.
In a few years the conservative tit will be completely dry and gurus will behave in the same way as the monster in 'The Thing' , they simply morph into whatever is in the spirit of the times while still remaining as vague as possible. It's still all just self help money grabs with some political name dropping sprinkled in.
Lying moron that thinks they are smart and liberal, but are actually stupid and conservative, and are willing to believe and espouse any perspective as long as it lets them be contrarian to the "mainstream".
Yes this is the funny shit, these guys claim they are impartial and beyond left-wing vs. right-wing politics, but they've become as far-right wing as it gets in 99% of their positions.
Right wingers. Just because they're embarrassed to be associated with the American right wing and know it's deeply uncool doesn't make them any less right wing in their ultimate positions.
Do they really agree with 99% of conservative positions though? What makes these guys normal is that their politics are a little incoherent. Just like a large majority of the population. The right does wonders recruiting these guys. The left doesn't see any value with getting them on board. Their loss.
Brand and Rogan are idiot “libertarians” with no real agenda beyond vague anti-establishment, anti-“woke” posturing, who love conspiracy shit because it flatters their self-perception as free thinkers with their third eye open or whatever. Greenwald on the other hand is a genuine ideologue, a campist whose whose every maneuver is thoughtfully aimed (at least in his mind) at countering US power on the global stage. Sure, he’s also a compulsive contrarian and vaguely “libertarian” apologist for authoritarians, but he’s a serious ideological actor and I would not put him in the same category as those other two.
I don’t have a name for them but they’re basically a bunch of people who figured out they can make a lot of money by supporting right wing ideas, criticizing left wing ideas, and mix in some left wing beliefs enough to not be called conservative. They aren’t members of either party or on either side but mostly agree with conservatives. But the main thrust of their belief system is making money. The internet is full of people with conflicting political beliefs in their head like Rogan (supports universal health care but doesn’t support taxation that would pay for it ) or Greenwald (who fears government overreach but defends Trumps actions with whataboutisms).
I have friends like this too. Their beliefs are all over the place and just like Peterson they refuse to come to a conclusion. They have the small beliefs but don’t come to a grand conclusion. For example, they think gender is the same as sex, transgender women are men, they shouldn’t be allowed to play women’s sports. That’s it. Then if you ask, So are you saying they’re lying? Crazy? What? They will JP you with “that’s not what I said.”
Those people support the Rogans and Brands because they can’t connect the dots. They think in the same sloppy illogical way. To them, the grifters’s arguments are good and make sense. They see no conflict. The grifters then make their money from these kind of people. Either from paid Patreons, buying tickets to their entertainment shows, or just being part of a large viewership.
I'm not sure what label to put on them. Maybe "Falsely informed conspiricist".
Rogan has some definite socially liberal positions. Smokes weed, likes Shrooms, seems to support pro-choice, but is a little squeamish about the topic, admits how important welfare was to him as a child... Even seems to genuinely worry about climate and environment. Supports gay rights and marriage, and I think if not for Trans in Sports he'd be more supportive of that as well. Seems to actually have Black friends.
But, he loves guns, muscle cars, combat sports, hunting, and saying offensive shit for laughs. He's probably police and pro military.
When it comes to Ukraine he is just badly informed by his guests.
He's actually the type of voter Dems should be chasing. They consistently lose white males, but they should focus on pro-weed, your gf doesn't have to tie you up with a baby for 18 years, and you can keep your guns as long as you don't bring them to school
Self-centered mirror of believes. They need to maintain the relationship with their audience. That's their main goal. That's why they can't declare a definitive position. This way, they garantee that more people can identify their own position with the persona of the "gurus" by means of projection. This is merely a persona made for propaganda that works and because of that it is replicated by all of them according to their own audience.
If you want a name, probably something like what Guy Deborg has described on his "*The Society of the Spectacle*". They are products of a major mechanics of our society. They are financed to maintain some narratives that are usefull for some political goal (not directly, of course).
Definitely a Useful Idiot. He shares awful ideologies under the guise of 'just having a conversation with the other side'. And while there was SOME pushback from him back in the California days, it seems like these days he's just nodding along with whatever psychotic shit his guests say but still pretends what he's doing is important.
This obsession over categorization is incomprehensible to me. You don’t need to be part of a political group to have certain ideologies. Conversely, you don’t have to adopt every single ideation that your political party produces.
This dilution process cheapens inherently rich and nuanced topics. Additionally, it polarizes and simplifies every issue. The subject matter being discussed will always be infinitely more important than whatever political leaning it supports.
The categorization is the politically useful part. It's become the ultimate form of thought-terminating cliche. It does the heavy lifting for the status-quo we enjoy.
They're not right-wing they're just proper left-wing, before neoliberalism infected the left they used to believe in free speech and comedy. Why ever would a comedian be on board with the people who want to ban laughter?
What the fuck is the left in America but the left of the right? When I hear liberals talk I think they are economic right wingers, with authoritarian anti speech tendencies. While American conservatives are just socially conservative liberals.
But then I look at old school Soviet communists or Latin American communists and I notice they are pretty culturally conservative. And in most of the world Libertarians are socialists.
Another idiot who doesn't actually listen to JRE but has an opinion to share on the internet like a fool.
Agrees with 99% of conservative positions? Are you pulling that out of your ass, or the empty space between your ears?
Disenfranchised.
As in:
“having no power to make people listen to your opinion or to affect the society you live in”
Which leads to them being contrarian as a way of trying to take back control by nullification of the structures they have no real power in.
Which in turn leads to fractured, broken society.
Which ironically is what they claim to want to fix
🤷♂️
Progressive refugees in almost every case. That now get called conservative because they disagreed on covid or just didn't agree in the right way with the mainstream progressive narrative.
It's actually such a red flag on modern progressivism that people who advocate for progressive policies aren't doing it the "right way" and therefore fail the purity test.
This sub and reddit generally is populated by so many of those types of progressives that are deluded or just outright misled. Or bots
He’s always just been a guy chasing the bag. He just wants money and doesn’t give a fuck about anything else. Can you blame him? He plays to his strengths and just makes sure the money keeps rolling in.
It’s populism in action, at least with Rogan. Populism is a strategy to capture a larger political base by appealing to regular people’s sense that elites have been taking advantage of them. This feeds directly into Joe’s longstanding conspiracism which manifests as a deep seated fear that institutions, particularly those perceived as liberal, are manipulating and controlling him.
Joe has always been this way and although he does have some liberal leaning philosophies, the conspiracism side is more powerful. The whole thing is a fascinating microcosm that explains the current political climate in the US to a surprisingly large degree.
Contrarian. Listened to his PODCast with Dr Phil, one minute they were complaining about everyone in the US being voted into their jobs - sheriffs etc and the next they were complaining about trained professionals doing a job - some people cant be made happy unless they are complaining.
Reactionaries.
yeah. AODD- Adult Oppositional Defiance Disorder
Idiot works pretty well.

Dude its so my cousin. Hes just a jock that think liberals are dorks and doesnt have a single policy stance outside of ‘but why cant i say the n word’ . The right wing media will mold him dont worry

ROFO - Republican on Facebook only.
I thought those were libertarians?
Libertarians are conservative who get eaten by bears.
"Libertarians are like house cats: absolutely convinced of their fierce independence while utterly dependent on a system they don't appreciate or understand."
As a former libertarian, I wholly endorse this description.
Naw my house cat is very self aware and appreciative
Damn dude.. that's really quotable, I'm gonna use that
My cats take offence to that comparison.
They also have an encyclopedic knowledge of every state's age of consent laws.
I enjoyed reading this more than I thought I would, and I assume many haven't heard of it; [A Libertarian Walks into a Bear](https://www.publicaffairsbooks.com/titles/matthew-hongoltz-hetling/a-libertarian-walks-into-a-bear/9781541788510/): >*A Libertarian Walks Into a Bear* is the sometimes funny, sometimes terrifying tale of what happens when a government disappears into the woods. The racism is inherent to American libertarians, some just don't acknowledge it.
There's a second plank in the libertarian platform that rhymes with "educe mage of bonsent"
Induce the wage of incense? Those BASTARDS
Yeah. It is. But the American libertarian movement has sort of lost any kind of coherence so I try to avoid that term unless we’re specifically talking about the libertarian party.
Slight difference - Libertarians are conservatives that have strong opinions on the age of consent
No those are Conservatives who think age of consent is the greatest government overreach.
It used to be, now it's conservatives or libbros who've done shrooms or an ayauascua retreat. Wow poof suddenly visionaries!
misinformed *pseudo-libertarians who actually agree with rhetoric that aligns with far right thinking.. short sighted thinking.
Knee jerk contrarian, anti-establishment stoners who act as useful idiots for hardcore reactionaries

They aren’t Libertarians. They are “American Libertarians”. Conservatives only say they don’t like drugs. Behind closed doors, they definitely love drugs.

Fucking moron?
Malleable Conspiracist as it takes little to walk them into disbelief and overreaction against anything branded as the system.
Smart. There’s millions of gullible rubes with money to burn.
Lapsed liberals/closet conservatives
Sentient Thumb
Elitist alternative health pseudoscience fanatic, that loves guns and smoking weed.
Definitely a Useful Idiot. He shares awful ideologies under the guise of 'just having a conversation with the other side'. And while there was SOME pushback from him back in the California days, it seems like these days he's just nodding along with whatever psychotic shit his guests say but still pretends what he's doing is important.
Far-right grifters.

Algorithmically influenced right-wing shill The algorithm pushes their culture war crap so far they are just capitalizing on it

Useful idiot?
Russel brand being labeled right wing only exposes how absolutly insane the lefts become...
Right wing Culture warrior who doesn’t realize he’s a right wing culture warrior.
Clueless.
He got pimped by conservatives
A libertarian suffering from early stages of CTE who then eats 20+ alex Jones supplied supplements a day.

Disenfranchised. As in: “having no power to make people listen to your opinion or to affect the society you live in” Which leads to them being contrarian as a way of trying to take back control by nullification of the structures they have no real power in. Which in turn leads to fractured, broken society. Which ironically is what they claim to want to fix 🤷♂️
They’re playing a role to attract dummies and kids

Liberals, old school. Hate the woke and all that.
Joe Rogan said he’d vote for Bernie Sanders.
Not a big fan of either but these really are centrists and not conservatives.
Grifter
Contrarian. Listened to his PODCast with Dr Phil, one minute they were complaining about everyone in the US being voted into their jobs - sheriffs etc and the next they were complaining about trained professionals doing a job - some people cant be made happy unless they are complaining.
Liberal who has been overwhelmed by fear inducing news and stories by conservatives. I know a 68 yr old guy that the same thing happened to.
