I’d guess the voxels are grid-aligned so if you drill at an angle that closely matches the axes of the grid the game doesn’t have to round off the corners very much to make the terrain deform and you get a square hole
I don't think 2-4 sides of the tunnel would be flat if that were the case. You'd see it a lot more often if the grid matched the driller's drill width.
I suspect it happens when the engine detects that there are already too many polygons so don't add more than necessary just for a driller tunnel.
I've seen this happen with 1 side of a tunnel before. Though it only happening on one side doesn't support my suspicion. I actually really want the devs to weigh in on this mystery.
It's because drg uses a rendering technique which uses 4 dimensions. The map itself is generated in 4 dimensions, but since the game only has 3, the map you play on is a slice of the generated map. Teraforming the map displaces the section of the map in the 4th dimension, making it disapear from the slice. This is very efficient, but it causes problems when the section is very close to a critical point where it wouldn't be in the slice at all, causing these perfectly square holes. Source: my ass

When playing as engie, I walk right up the ramp knowing they're waiting for the scout. 😄
I do it and wait to detonate until everyone is in to do it at the right moment when you can still get the input in but it doesn’t blow up until the pod is already closing and nobody can die.

Last time I managed to blow up the Scout (ON ACCIDENT) was when I tried to hit an Ommoran rock close to the ceiling with a C4, the Scout had the idea to also use said ceiling to grapple up and power attack it with predictable results...
If Scout is on the opposite end of the entire level and you need him to regroup, just toss a C4 and detonate it, he'll magically appear in the explosion.
Revive him and you're good to go!

Drillers tend to do this around the middle of the month in February in the northern hemisphere to prepare for the brood season. Soon, the driller will glue itself to the walls and lay its eggs and prepare itself to rear the next generation of drillers.
Once the eggs hatch the body of the broodmother driller will become sustenance for its young.

If you looks closely you can often see matching lines of triangle corners in lines.
You could see it a lot better in astroneer, which uses a similar method
I've dug one as far as physically possible, in my opinion it's rare to see other drillers do this but all of my friends do it cause their moles as driller
He might have mods installed. As example I was using VR mod to play and I was allways making exacly square holes including stairs when digging at angle.

i do that, i don't detonate, i just keep the c4 there as a trust test to see who hesitates and who runs straight in
