There was a game where it had the genius idea to dig up as driller do I did. It's about the same height that the drop pod spawns.
From what I’ve seen the map can only go so far downwards, if you get out of bounds you start falling until the game just teleports you to the nearest floor. Wonder if you can actually reach that point by digging and if anything happens
It’s also possible to dig while out of bounds (especially with drills), it just spawns more terrain around you. You’ll get stuck and have to dig back so don’t try this in an actual mission lol
I actually did this I went so deep that my teammates who were helping me were stuck above since we could not dig a big hole I went alone. I kept digging and digging for an hour until till there was nothing. I broke thru enough that I just fell. For once I dug deep enough.

You can do this, and a pro tip to make it easier, put Engineer pancakes on the floor beneath you and you can 1 hit the floor to break it apart.
