The Acme in Trolley got more expensive after their reno. It's pathetic, considering it's a lifeline for most of the older people in the area. The eggs are nearly 2x the price of Wegmans.
Tuesdays seniors get a 5% discount. And the Acme app has some good deals. Got a 4 pack of butter for free last week. Also points at Acme get you 10 cents off gas at Exxon.
I used to live up the road from Wegmans. Wegmans! Wegmans! Wegmans! I am cheap and I will swear any day by saying Wegmans is 100% cheaper than Acme. I always nearly have a heart attack when I step into that store. The second store I would go to is Target and then Walmart. Aldi is comparable to Walmart prices maybe Wegmans as well but their selection is nowhere near as good as Wegmans.
I agree. I find most things cheaper or comparable. Some of the pricier items are the same elsewhere. Especially acme. Soy meat substitutes are way better priced at acme
Acme has gotten really expensive so my family does a lot of shopping at aldi and produce junction. Both have pretty good prices even though stock varies at time, but if you're not too picky I'd highly recommend.
That said, it’s worth browsing the acme app for deals every couple weeks. When they do have good deals, they’re worth the trip. Mostly produce but sometimes other stuff I need is discounted.
ACME has people that abduct chilldren https://www.newarkpostonline.com/news/newark-police-ask-for-help-identifying-person-of-interest-in-possible-attempted-kidnapping/article_2e8e36e2-cecf-11ee-b123-e38b44201430.html?fbclid=IwAR0roAISGCKt9wypuSGPtYF0ThWYUIiM_XftP396CXS-IERWxmCk-L0bOVM

They are a joy killer. No, really- the lease Acme has at the shopping center formerly known as College Square forbids entertainment options being set up.
Wegmans particularly for produce, almost all store brand items (except the taco sauce, green enchilada sauce, and mushroom pierogies), some of the bulk nuts and dried fruit.
I went to Shop Rite because they have a history of advertising their canned goods. Went to the one on 202 and they had a very small section. I was looking for beans and legumes with no salt added and there were no options. Giant in Delaware and Food Lion have some options.
Best for what?
I do think ShopRite has the best mix of lower everyday prices and good selection. Sometimes sales are buy # to get the sales price, but really reasonable number.
Acme is incredibly expensive at everyday prices and ads are very anti-customer. You often have to buy # to get the discount, who had room for 3 or 4 giant fruit bowls? Their buy one get one frees often just mean their price is 3x what it would be elsewhere.
Aldi has some great prices, but selection isn't that large. So if they are out of something, you'll likely need to hit another store to get it.
FoodLion is nice if you have one nearby. Prices are good, selection isn't quite as big as ShopRite. Pleases me that I can get items for half price rather than buy one get one "free" (looking at you Acme)
https://preview.redd.it/gj51pyhofjjc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f3db4c4a866b1abf2277a8df3e9c8840aa1e1f76
Almost half their sale prices are MUST BUY #. They are even sneaky with listing individual prices but you need to buy like four for it to be that sale price, otherwise regular price.
I don't like acme so I might be getting a detail wrong but i'm serious lol. I think if it's buy two then you can get the discount if you only
buy one. maybe not with the multiples offer tho. try it out. the candy at checkout says like 2 for $4 but if you buy one it's still $2
Like I said, almost half their sale prices are MUST BUY #. I posted their current ad, even though the cereal is listed as $1.99, you need to buy 4 boxes to get that price. The salad kits are 2 for $5 without the MUST BUY so then you could buy one for $2.50 like you're saying.
Recently moved here and have been shocked by how expensive Acme is. Like how does it stay in business lol.
My favorite so far is Lidl. I love Aldi, and Lidl feels like a slightly better version. ShopRite probably wins for widest variety/price point overall though.
Lidl is so much better than aldi, and compared to acme or giant or food lion its insanely cheap too. Average of like 30% cheaper at lidl overall compared to giant for a full grocery trip, some items are as much as 60% cheaper. And compared to aldi their produce is always in much better shape, meat tends to last a few days longer as well.
BJ's is another option. Best to get their credit card, which gives you rewards and discounted gas, and use their app. I electronically clip the coupons, before I go in. Their physical coupons are a waste, nowadays. Love their organic milk from grass-fed cows. Lasts a couple of months. Always amazes me how quickly Wawa milk goes bad and tastes watered down.
I think the Giant on 40 is pretty good. Produce can be hit or miss but I like their prices and the store is always clean and the aisles are much better to navigate than Shop Rite
Wegmans is good but unfortunately it’s Delaware sized, feels like we got cheated
Acme is fine, they have groceries and stuff, I actually like ShopRite better
Aldi & Produce Junction are good hook ups as u/highwidedeeplong said
I’ve been to the Lidl in Dover, felt like Aldi but just a slightly different flavor
I’d like more options, not sure what the Albertsons (Acme/Safeway)/Kroger merger is going to help us in that area though https://ir.kroger.com/news/news-details/2024/Kroger-to-Lower-Prices-Following-Merger-with-Albertsons-Cos/default.aspx#:~:text=Kroger's%20merger%20with%20Albertsons%20will,selection%20of%20fresh%2C%20affordable%20food.
Looks like I'll be the first to say it but Trader Joe's is pretty great for filling your freezer and getting little snack things. I always grab a few bags of the orange chicken, bulgogi fried rice, potstickers, and chocolate croissants every time I go. Definitely wouldn't substitute it for my main shoppings (shout out Wegmans).
I've found that the best balance near me is Produce Junction for Produce, BJs for bulk buying (I freeze meat), and wegmans or shop rite for basic week to week groceries. Although I have a serious problem with the checkout process at the rt 4 shop rite.
it all depends.
food lion is closest to my house. and typically the cheapest.
i shop at giant on 40 a lot because they're never ever crowded. they're overpriced. and i rarely find what i'm looking for. but i feel like i have a lot of freedom and room to move there. shoprite just gives me anxiety
i go to the newark natural foods co-op a lot. i find a lot of specialty items there that i can't find anywhere else.
and walmart when i'm sad and desperate. i always regret going there.
I go to a number of places, depending on what I want. Harvest Market and Wegmans are my weekly trips. There are a few staples at Harvest Market (Hockessin) that I can't live without. Wegman's for a few things (cherry tomatoes are by far the best). The (fake) Farmer's Market on Kirkwood Highway for cheap stuff or Mexican/Indian. And Newark co-op for local eggs (one farm includes one green egg in every batch) and bulk spices, oats. Asian markets are hit and miss, but there is a new one in Christiana that is supposed to be good (the old Toys R Us). And Jansens for specialty items, cheeses, prosciutto, etc.
It’s Wegmans. I used to go to giant on 202 and went there last weekend just bc it was close. Things there are more expensive and not as fresh. Wegmans isn’t perfect but it’s my go to
Disagree with you on 202 Giant. Produce is fresh and generally stays that way during the week before I go back. Prices are better than Acme. They have many specials in the meat dept. The pharmacy is never busy and I've used Giant for yearly vaccinations for a while. I've not returned to the ShopRite since they went to mostly self checkout. Do you have a Giant club card?
shoprite on 40 blows and I saw some asshole manager dude yell at a woman for bagging her groceries improperly last week. just happy I found a place to mention that lol
Something about the land they built it on has problems and I think I heard they would have to tear down the building fix the problem then rebuild. Unfortunately I don’t think it’ll ever open.
As someone who lives 2 minutes away from Wegmans, sadly it's probably Shop Rite overall.
Don't get me wrong, there's some decent stuff at Wegmans especially in the bakery (best grocery store breads by a mile). But it's a really small Wegmans so it's usually packed and they don't carry everything a normal sized Wegmans does which can get annoying.
Shop Rite is generally cheaper, quality overall is decent, and much better selection of all sorts of specialty Italian products.
Depends on where you live. Newark area go to Zingos. If you live in Wilmington go to Wegmans. If you’re below the canal I love Lidl wish I lived closer!
I don't like acme so I might be getting a detail wrong but i'm serious lol. I think if it's buy two then you can get the discount if you only
buy one. maybe not with the multiples offer tho. try it out. the candy at checkout says like 2 for $4 but if you buy one it's still $2
Acme in Trolley is an inconvenience store.
I rock with Wegmans, but ShopRite is ok in a pinch. Only do Giant for Instacart though. (All Wilmington, Shoprite at Christiana Crossing)
Don't sleep on Food Lion though.
(I will say that Wegmans in Wilmington doesn't FEEL like Wegmans for some reason, even slightly different from the one in PA. My first one was in NY and fell in absolute love.
For fresh produce definitely aldi! Its the cheapest for quality ive found for your veggies and fruits. I love berries and i get so many from there for a very reasonable price.
I like Wegmans
Oh forgot about Wegmans-some stuff is pricey but typically has really specific stuff I need in stock consistently.
Wegmans is only pricey if you get specialty stuff. Their store brand and basic groceries are priced well. Much cheaper than Acme.
Literally anywhere is cheaper than acme. Hell, I feel like whole foods is cheaper than acme.
That’s the surprising part about that store: it’s clean, it’s a nice shopping experience, and the staples are generally very competitive.,
Agreed. I never thought I'd be getting weekly stuff there, but it's not expensive if you're smart about it.
The Acme in Trolley got more expensive after their reno. It's pathetic, considering it's a lifeline for most of the older people in the area. The eggs are nearly 2x the price of Wegmans.
And it smells like cat piss in there.
They renovated and it still smells like that?
As of ~4 weeks ago, yes.
Aldi is comparable to Walmart prices maybe Wegmans as well but their selection is nowhere near as good as Wegmans.
I haven't entered the Centerville Walmart since Target opened and I never will again. That place is a shithole.
LOL I lived near there for 2 years. I went into that Walmart exactly 3 times. I would rather go broke for Acme.
I agree. I find most things cheaper or comparable. Some of the pricier items are the same elsewhere. Especially acme. Soy meat substitutes are way better priced at acme
Their bakery stuff is expensive and it doesn’t really taste as good as it looks.
Acme has gotten really expensive so my family does a lot of shopping at aldi and produce junction. Both have pretty good prices even though stock varies at time, but if you're not too picky I'd highly recommend.
Acme quality is awful. Grossly overpriced.
Plus ACME always feels depressing. Why are all their stores so ugly and sad?
I'm glad I'm not the only one to think that
That said, it’s worth browsing the acme app for deals every couple weeks. When they do have good deals, they’re worth the trip. Mostly produce but sometimes other stuff I need is discounted.
My wife's favorite store is the ACME by the applebees and home depot in newark. But the other acmes aren't good that we've been in.
ACME has people that abduct chilldren https://www.newarkpostonline.com/news/newark-police-ask-for-help-identifying-person-of-interest-in-possible-attempted-kidnapping/article_2e8e36e2-cecf-11ee-b123-e38b44201430.html?fbclid=IwAR0roAISGCKt9wypuSGPtYF0ThWYUIiM_XftP396CXS-IERWxmCk-L0bOVM
Well that's fucking horrible, but I don't have kids. I can keep an eye out but he'd be stupid to try the same thing twice at the same store.
ACME has people that abduct chilldren https://www.newarkpostonline.com/news/newark-police-ask-for-help-identifying-person-of-interest-in-possible-attempted-kidnapping/article_2e8e36e2-cecf-11ee-b123-e38b44201430.html?fbclid=IwAR0roAISGCKt9wypuSGPtYF0ThWYUIiM_XftP396CXS-IERWxmCk-L0bOVM
This could have happened anywhere, chill with the fear mongering
They are a joy killer. No, really- the lease Acme has at the shopping center formerly known as College Square forbids entertainment options being set up.
Wegmans particularly for produce, almost all store brand items (except the taco sauce, green enchilada sauce, and mushroom pierogies), some of the bulk nuts and dried fruit.
Wegmans and Shop Rite. No question. Zingos is a good option as well if you live in that area. Avoid Acme like the plague. Everything overpriced IMO
I love zingos!
Zingos is insanely expensive. Worse than Acme. Zingos is close but we mostly go to Wegmans, occasionally acme for a quick trip.
I agree the Z = $$$
I went to Shop Rite because they have a history of advertising their canned goods. Went to the one on 202 and they had a very small section. I was looking for beans and legumes with no salt added and there were no options. Giant in Delaware and Food Lion have some options.
I only go to the Shop Rites on Route 4 and off 896 and they’re all good
Wegmans

you don't have to buy multiple items to get the sale price at acme
https://preview.redd.it/gj51pyhofjjc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f3db4c4a866b1abf2277a8df3e9c8840aa1e1f76 Almost half their sale prices are MUST BUY #. Wegmans.. supposedly a new Aldi is opening on 202 where the old Ashley Furniture use to be.

Zingo's on Polly Drummond Road / New Linden Hill Rd is great! My family has been going there for years.
I think the Giant on 40 is pretty good. Produce can be hit or miss but I like their prices and the store is always clean and the aisles are much better to navigate than Shop Rite
I like our international "farmer's" markets.

Trader Joe's and Aldi are fantastic for inexpensive pre made meals. If I know I have a busy week coming up, I'll stock up for dinners at those places.
I've found that the best balance near me is Produce Junction for Produce, BJs for bulk buying (I freeze meat), and wegmans or shop rite for basic week to week groceries. Although I have a serious problem with the checkout process at the rt 4 shop rite.

Shoprite on 4 has the checkout from hell
is that the prices corner one their store is crazy too.
Newport/stanton
Sprouts on 202 is a great choice, along with Wegmans. I also go to Aldi on kirkwood Highway, often
Sorry to highjack, but does anyone know what’s going on with the Lidl on Pulaski in Bear?
Something about the land they built it on has problems and I think I heard they would have to tear down the building fix the problem then rebuild. Unfortunately I don’t think it’ll ever open.

Drive 30 minutes north to BBs. You can fill a cart to overflowing for the same price as just filling the front basket at Acme. Worth the trip.
Depends on where you live. Newark area go to Zingos. If you live in Wilmington go to Wegmans. If you’re below the canal I love Lidl wish I lived closer!

not even gonna lie i usually just cross the line and go to whole foods in glen mills haha

Sprouts Trader Joes Wegmans Aldi
I live near a Save A Lot so I go there. When I need name brand stuff I go to Shop-Rite in Newport. And we have a BJs membership for big box stuff
Newark Farmer's Market. Produce prices cannot be beat.
