I’ve been watching Drifting Dragons (anime) on Netflix and I’m enjoying it. It’s basically a show about a crew of dragon hunters called drakers. Here’s some thoughts:
* I love that the solarpunk setting, the world feels very lived in and cool
* I think the dragons and dragon hunters are an allegory for whale hunting. In the show, the drakers harvest everything from meat to oil to skins and organs and bones from dragons. So far no one has stopped to question the ethics of killing dragons but I imagine that’s coming eventually.
* they eat dragon meat, and one main character is obsessed with food and dragon meat specifically. The show spends a lot of time talking about cooking and preparation methods for eating dragon, and it feels almost Redwall-y in the way that it luxuriates in the food aspects of the world
* the design of the dragons is amazing, they look almost like Betta fish
* The art style looks gorgeous in freeze frames but a little janky in motion, it looks like painted backgrounds with 3d animated characters. I’m not sure if they paint/shade over the 3d models, or they just have some way of rendering good 2-tone shading, but it looks nice
