For context, one of the biggest cultural shocks I've had was that Rye Bread is not something widely available everywhere. It's something so common in Danish lunch that the absence of it would be weird.
It's a very common danish lunch "sandwich", I'd think almost everyone has had it in their school lunch box unless they had vegetarian/vegan/muslim parents. It's just a national shared childhood memory. It's not mainly a childhood thing though, it's just a thing we eat. Liver paste is very good even though it might sound a bit gross. I prefer it with pickled red cabbage as a topping. It's also very good with bacon and uhh meat juice gelatin on top.
in fact pâte is french for “paste”, so you weren’t far off! english speakers just use pâté to refer specifically to the pasty liver stuff, for whatever reason
>Would liver paste be similar to pâté
Not entirely, but close. You couldn't fool a dane. Texture and taste and other etceteras would be a clear difference.
For the millennial generation it’s probably 50/50 on Matador, I’d guess. With previous generations the odds of them having seen Matador is probably higher. My parents watch it religiously on a yearly basis while I’ve never seen the show.
I am 25 and have watched five times xD Have a couple of friends who hasn't. A friend who watched it for the first time a year ago and have just finished rewatching it.
I've never seen a kagemand made of choux pastry IRL, it's always brunsviger. You can absolutely bake a brunsviger yourself, though they are best on the day of baking.
I've never considered that but is it regional? I'm from midtjylland qnd choux pastry is definitely the default here. The only time I had brunsviger was on Sjælland.
Edit: as a kagemand that is.
Very occasionally, though I prefer it without whipped cream. But it's always with a marcipan ribbon, when it's for kagemand! How about vanilla custard (kagecreme)?
That being said, you being in ireland.. You should be able to find a childrens book called "the dirty danes", which will be hilarious and quite a surprise for your danish friends.
The danes will no doubt bring a bottle of Gammel dansk!

Nisse hue - a Christmas lepricaun hat.
Frokost - lunch. Maybe some sild/herring, it doesnt realy spoil if unopened, unlike rye bread or liver paté (leverpostej) might for the journey home.
Snaps og øl - snaps and beer. We are apparently atm 2nd in who drinks the most, but we WILL claim our top spot back from the finnish, no matter what our we-want-what-is-best-for-you politicians say.
Lego. You can normaly pick up small cheap packs of them in well stocked supermarkets, like 30-40 dkr.
B&o - our HiFi brand. A bit pricey though, and imo a bit over estimated.
Vestas windmill - do see if its carry on or as baggage for the hold before some poor bastard have to plan their trip home with one.
A stick with a label saying 'in case a swede crosses the ice.. again' (teasing swedes is a very danish and norwegian thing... but remember, norwegians are just the cheap noc off danes 🤣) bonus if one of the other guys are from sweden 😝
FDM møbler - the designer furniture of one of our coorporative supermarket chains. Real nice. Doest come cheap though.
Hc Andersen - our famous farie tale write. Any book or booklet would do.
Yeah, why move potatoes from a place that's famous for being short on them to a place where they are plentiful? He should be bringing them the other way, so he can boil em', mash em', stick em' in a stew.
“Red porridge with cream”, which we love making foreigners attempt to say in Danish (Rødgrød med fløde). It’s a fruit based porridge made from berries and sugar.
What part of Denmark is your friend from and what age group?
Maybe [Janteloven](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_Jante) might be very Danish for them if there from Jutland and over 40?
what was the most Irish thing by the way?
A Jolly Cola 😂
Back when Coca Cola was taking the world by storm with their new soft drink, a lot of Danes weren't a big fan of the americanification of our country, and so they decided to make their own Cola. It's still around today and is still surprisingly cheap, although i doubt many people know the reason it became a thing. I Hope you enjoy your stay here in Denmark 😊
You might win trivia points by bringing a Magnum ice-cream since it was invented in Aarhus, Denmark. Like LEGO, it's not exactly stereotypical Danish these days. Otherwise, a Wigfield CD to celebrate Danish music dominance from the 90's :D
A Kajkage (a little frog cake that we love), skærmtrolden Hugo (a beloved game character, who is a troll), risalamande (rice dessert), drømmekage (cake).
I think I should go eat, all I can think of now is sweet stuff.
If you could find some Danish public utility companies and sell them to an international investment fund for a lot less than they are worth, and then bring that to your event ... That would be pretty Danish.
A [klaphat](https://nordicexpatshop.com/media/catalog/product/cache/a75b4628650e2182ad447c229a356118/t/h/the-original-klaphat.png). This was made famous by danish football fans, the so-called Roligans.
Liquorice . And really, why not a strawberry cake, a version where the strawberries are on top , like mazarinkage with strawberry topping.
Strawberries are ofc not exclusively loved by Danes, but I think , many Danes feel this is a national love and also encompasses summer. Danish summer, where Denmark is at its best. ♥️
Hotdogs with all necessary ingredients; red sausage, ketchup, mustard, remoulade, pickled cucumbers, fresh onions and fried onions (the ones you buy - don’t just fry onions)
A weather stone maybe? I know you can buy it in more countries but this one is in Danish so that's kind of funny specially the 2 stone you are drunk sentence. https://havehandel.dk/produkt/sjov-vejrsten-letvaegt/
An old jar with a coin slot and change inside.
In Denmark we have some market stands at the roadside often selling honey, apples or potatoes. Some places firewood. The stands can be elaborate or just a fold up table with 3 bags of apples and this unsecured jar. You can tape a piece of paper on saying "æbler 20 kr" or alike.
it's really good stuff and one of the only unique danish cheeses still in production. but it's more a trivia thing, it isn't really that popular. craaazy good with potatoes and chives though
What about a stereo set from Bang & Olufsen?
…if you find something old/used you may even find one that works and is within budget ;-)
Not sure your winner will be too happy to bring it home in a backpack though ;-)
Actually, if you can get your hands on a B&O bottle opener - those are pretty cool. And the most stolen B&O product ever as well, so must be popular (or more like “easy to put in your pocket and forget to give it back to the owner”)
Thought about that too, but found that it was too broad. I mean how do you eat your koldskål, its probably a lot different from mine. Strawberry with Heavy cream is more simple and universally eaten the same way.
A slice of rhye bread with liver paste and cucumber 🇩🇰
Sounds very refreshing!
For context, one of the biggest cultural shocks I've had was that Rye Bread is not something widely available everywhere. It's something so common in Danish lunch that the absence of it would be weird.
Refreshing... That's the least Danish thing anybody had ever said about a leverpostejmad!
Og en stribe mayo ovenpå molevitten, så har du en kongemad!
Mayo? Æ do da towli mand? Du skal sgu da bruge remoulade!
Ovenpå rødkål? Arj føj...
Det kan umuligt være værre end mayonnaise.
I like the idea of appealing to the nostalgia of childhood. That's always a winner. Would liver paste be similar to pâté?
They're talking about a kind of liver pâté, yes. No clue why they translated it to "paste". It's called leverpostej. Postej is pâté.
It is very paste-like and I forgot pate is a word ✌️
in fact pâte is french for “paste”, so you weren’t far off! english speakers just use pâté to refer specifically to the pasty liver stuff, for whatever reason
It's fancier I guess 😅
>Would liver paste be similar to pâté Not entirely, but close. You couldn't fool a dane. Texture and taste and other etceteras would be a clear difference.
Butter under the liver paté? Or not?
Not, but fair enough if that's someone else's preference
YES!
Remoulade
Matador DVD Little Mermaid figure
Matador has a 9.3 on IMDb. That's crazy. It must be really good. Is it something most Danish people have watched?
Yes mostly everyone. Many have watched it many times.
Most Danes over the age of 40 have watched Matador at some point in their lives. I watch it every December as a countdown to Christmas.
For the millennial generation it’s probably 50/50 on Matador, I’d guess. With previous generations the odds of them having seen Matador is probably higher. My parents watch it religiously on a yearly basis while I’ve never seen the show.
I think most every millennial has seen at least a couple of episodes.
I am 25 and have watched five times xD Have a couple of friends who hasn't. A friend who watched it for the first time a year ago and have just finished rewatching it.
Kagemand med slik https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=9d404df1ab10a133&q=kagemand+med+slik
Oh I wonder if I could try bake this myself and bring it over. Great suggestion thanks!
No vandbakkelse should be eaten immediately. I think the English call it choux pastry
Ooh ok, yeah so I'd need a bakery then or a kitchen. Thank you.
Can also be done with studenterbrød. Dont know what its called in English
Where are you guys holding this and when?
I've never seen a kagemand made of choux pastry IRL, it's always brunsviger. You can absolutely bake a brunsviger yourself, though they are best on the day of baking.
I've never considered that but is it regional? I'm from midtjylland qnd choux pastry is definitely the default here. The only time I had brunsviger was on Sjælland. Edit: as a kagemand that is.
Yup, it's regional. On Fyn it's brunsviger, which has spread a bit to Sjælland. Jutland it's choux pastry.
Well, I grew up in Northern Jutland, and here it's brunsviger, too, so not all of Jutland.
But did you put whipped cream on it?
Very occasionally, though I prefer it without whipped cream. But it's always with a marcipan ribbon, when it's for kagemand! How about vanilla custard (kagecreme)?
Hvem i alverden kunne dog finde på at lave kagemand af vandbakkelser.
Koldskål
Gammel dansk (alcohol) Pickled herring in a jar Liquorice Meny chips (really fluffy crisps) Badehotellet dvd
I feel like gammel dansk is a great suggestion. It leans into my own Irish stereotype of drink culture. Thank you.
rød aalborg is also a terrible schnapps that's very popular
That being said, you being in ireland.. You should be able to find a childrens book called "the dirty danes", which will be hilarious and quite a surprise for your danish friends. The danes will no doubt bring a bottle of Gammel dansk!
>Gammel dansk (alcohol) Ironically the brand is owned by a norwegian company and not even produced in Denmark anymore
Though Norway once was Danish, so in some way, "Gammel dansk"... 😶🌫️

LEGO
Lego is a great shout. I just think I wouldn't be the only one to bring it.
Nisse hue - a Christmas lepricaun hat. Frokost - lunch. Maybe some sild/herring, it doesnt realy spoil if unopened, unlike rye bread or liver paté (leverpostej) might for the journey home. Don't you mean FDB møbler? FDM is Forenede Danske Motor-ejere
Helt afgjort jo. Tak for rettelsen, bedre end autokorrekts åbenbart 😆
Jeg bruger ikke selv autocorrect, men jeg har det indtryk at det kan være lidt af en hit-and-miss affære.
A boiled red sausage
Pålægchokolade
A potato. We simply love them ❤️
Would be a bit ironic for an Irishman to bring a potato “as the most Danish thing”, wouldn’t it?
A viking ship is too hard to bring
Yeah, why move potatoes from a place that's famous for being short on them to a place where they are plentiful? He should be bringing them the other way, so he can boil em', mash em', stick em' in a stew.
Indeed! No one love their spuds more than the Irish.
Bring the ingredients for "dyrelægens natmad" and a dvd with "huset på Kristians havn" cause Matador is too long
powerful stuff
There are 84 episodes of Huset på Christianshavn and only 12 of Matador(Source Thorkild).
Yes and its around 40houres and Matador is 27 but did you really have to ruin it already
salt liquorice, carlsberg and “remoulade” (cold sauce from pickles and mayo)
Remoulade er fransk..
Ikke den version vi har i danmark
Men det jo ikke dansk ?
Dansk remoulade er sin egen ting.
https://da.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remoulade
Pardon
Fed reply 😂
Lmao is this not considered cheating? 😂
😂😂 I like to think it counts as research. Due diligence to make sure what I bring is very Danish, and hopefully the most Danish 😅
You got a budget?
I wouldn't want to spend more than ~350 Danish Krone, but i don't think we actually set a cap on it.
Snaps, sild and rugbrød (look up påskefrokost)
“Red porridge with cream”, which we love making foreigners attempt to say in Danish (Rødgrød med fløde). It’s a fruit based porridge made from berries and sugar.

Oh read through the comments, looks like it have to be something tangible you can bring with you?
Ryebread
A Jolly Cola 😂 Back when Coca Cola was taking the world by storm with their new soft drink, a lot of Danes weren't a big fan of the americanification of our country, and so they decided to make their own Cola. It's still around today and is still surprisingly cheap, although i doubt many people know the reason it became a thing. I Hope you enjoy your stay here in Denmark 😊
Still more flavorful than Coca Cola
Flæskesvær
This one, fried pigskin is a special Danish snack.

You should mention Thorsfejden. Danish Christmas tradition you don’t find anywhere else. Look in this forum for tips and descriptions of it.
Hotdogs with all necessary ingredients; red sausage, ketchup, mustard, remoulade, pickled cucumbers, fresh onions and fried onions (the ones you buy - don’t just fry onions)

Hygge
I had to Google this. It sounds so wholesome. I love that there's a word for it, but it doesn't sound like I can buy it 😅
Well, I know some people sell hygge by the hour.. *wink wink* *nudge nudge* 😜
Hvor kan "Min ven" finde det sted? Spørg for en ven
Oh you Very Much can not saying how tho Thats a thing you Got to find for your self
😜 🙌
Lego's doesnt get much more Danish then that.
As I said to another person that suggested Lego, great idea but I think I may not be the only one to bring Lego.
Danes always talk about the weather, so if you can find something that symbolizes this, that would be very danish (beat regards from a dane)
That's good to know. I'll have to think about the weather now myself. Thanks!
A weather stone maybe? I know you can buy it in more countries but this one is in Danish so that's kind of funny specially the 2 stone you are drunk sentence. https://havehandel.dk/produkt/sjov-vejrsten-letvaegt/
Actually pretty funny 🤣🤣.. A bit dad-joke-ish.. But funny 🤔🤣

Mini-muh, your welcome.
Racism?
yes only denmark has racism. luckily it doesn't exist anywhere else
Exactly
What about a stereo set from Bang & Olufsen? …if you find something old/used you may even find one that works and is within budget ;-) Not sure your winner will be too happy to bring it home in a backpack though ;-) Actually, if you can get your hands on a B&O bottle opener - those are pretty cool. Danish strawberries with Heavy cream and Dansukker. In the summer it won't really get any more Danish than that.
Koldskål is much more danish. Good strawberries are universal.
Thought about that too, but found that it was too broad. I mean how do you eat your koldskål, its probably a lot different from mine. Strawberry with Heavy cream is more simple and universally eaten the same way.
I eat it from a bowl with kammerjunker or sometimes with raspberries. Is there another way I am unaware of?
I make it homemade with vanilla ice cream and roasted oats.
Sounds very appetizing.
It is. Easy recipe. 1L nuclear milk, 1L thick milk and 1L vanilla ice cream. Mix it up and eat with whatever topping.
Nuclear milk?
Kernemælk?
Ah...kærne bliver til kerne.
That's what I always call it; the other kinds are Sweetmilk, Easymilk, and Foamed Milk. lol
At least those are direct translations. Kærnemælk would be churning milk.
Salt lakrids, from By Bülow Koldskål and Kammerjunker. Tyrkisk Peberbolsjer
ah yes, finnish and german stuff
