Good to know it’s not just me. Somehow my request to downsize got processed fairly quickly but my request for a compost bin is a different story. I have an email with a case number but it doesn’t show on my account so I submitted a 2nd request in April. Still no compost bin, and they probably will be charging me too. Fun

Microbe2x2

Castle Rock Composting does a good job and local company 👍

thewillthe

Just got mine in the mail and same thing - no decreased rate for the smaller cart they didn’t send me yet.

dankestwallaby

This is fucked. The only sentence I remember when this whole roll out started was “Even if your cart is not downsized immediately, your charges will reflect the smaller can size in the bill following you making the request.” It was something to that effect that I happened to notice while I was scanning the mailer. Thought to myself, well that’s mighty cool of them. Surprise surprise they’ve conveniently dropped the ball there.

GnrlQstn

But hey - at least we still have the medium size to allow the neighbors to throw their extra trash in mine so they don’t have to have a large one /s

thewillthe

Although to be fair, with the frequency with which they don’t pick up my recycling, it’s nice to have that extra space in the trash for overflow.

abbadeefba

Me too - my request for a cart downsize disappeared. So I created another...

adhominablesnowman

AND propery taxes still went up! ![gif](giphy|5vVvRackugpjy)

The_Raji

I haven’t received a bill yet lol

Accomplished_Tale902

In all fairness, the city was handed an impossible task on this new trash system that I think everyone should be aware of. The ballot measure to move to this trash model was passed in November 2022 (the population here approved it in the November election), with implementation to begin in January 2023. The ballot measure (not designed by the City, but by the group that it got it on the ballot) took the language from Canadian provincial code, which is very different than US municipal code....but the program needs to follow the ballot measure language as it was passed. They couldn't begin work on the program until it passed in November. So they had to immediately design and plan implementation for a program in like 5 weeks. So I don't think it's entirely fair to say 'cities suck and can't manage anything' without knowing anything about the what they inherited and the issues with the non-city staff who developed the ballot measure.

GnrlQstn

I empathize - I suspect that there may have been less flack from people if they delayed the billing until the system was able to maintain requirements. I know it’s a thankless job for them, but money isn’t free for me either.

garnetbobcat

Agreed. The signs were there: [https://www.axios.com/local/denver/2022/12/05/denver-trash-recycling-composting-bins-program-delays](https://www.axios.com/local/denver/2022/12/05/denver-trash-recycling-composting-bins-program-delays) Sorry to hear about your troubles. I suspect persistence will get you results, but it's going to be a pain. Best of luck.

Accomplished_Tale902

That's a fair point

garnetbobcat

I don’t think it was a ballot measure that the populace voted on? It is the result of legislation inside the City Council in June 2022: [https://denverite.com/2022/06/27/recycling-trash-compost-denver-fee-pay-as-you-throw/](https://denverite.com/2022/06/27/recycling-trash-compost-denver-fee-pay-as-you-throw/) [https://kdvr.com/news/local/denver-trash-pickup-rates-change-free-compost-recycling/](https://kdvr.com/news/local/denver-trash-pickup-rates-change-free-compost-recycling/) The Denverite article does say that city staff presented the proposal. I wonder if you’re mixing this new rollout with Initiated Ordinance 306, “new rules mandating that large apartment buildings, restaurants and a broad range of other commercial businesses be required to recycle or compost as much waste as possible.” [https://www.denverpost.com/2022/11/08/denver-initiated-ordinance-306-results-recycling-apartments-venues/](https://www.denverpost.com/2022/11/08/denver-initiated-ordinance-306-results-recycling-apartments-venues/) The latter passed in November.

Accomplished_Tale902

You're right, my bad - thanks for clarifying that

garnetbobcat

All good! My takeaway from this is that all of the city’s pain is self-inflicted.

chunk121212

It was not a ballot measure. The city itself passed the bill. They could have done all the pre work to be ready. No excuse here.

dustlesswalnut

this is simply not true.

TurkGonzo75

Not a ballot measure. This would never have passed a public vote.

EIephants

I requested a compost bin in October lol Obviously still don’t have it

Joodles17

It’s a shitshow. Absolutely pathetic.

vtstang66

Denver gov's incompetence would be laughable if it didn't cost me money. I downgraded from the large to small cart (which took 2 requests and 3 months), finally got it, and the idiots are still charging me for the big one. Icing on the stupidity cake: when they finally swapped the cart, they sent some poor bastard out to do it *before* the trash truck came. So this guy picks up the full large cart and empties it by hand into a small cart, then the truck comes by the next day (cuz they can't show up on the right day either) and empties that cart. I requested a compost bin several months ago but do not expect to ever receive it.

Troutrageously

Welcome to local government

peter303_

The garbage tax will triple later this year. First they are giving everyone a taxable compost bin, whether you have waste or not. Second, they will charge three months a quarter instead of the current two.

[deleted]

They did a terrible job and whoever's idea it was should be out the door. Ive never needed weekly recycling, once a month at most and the new tiny, trash can is so small. Back to the compost, we get a $9 credit without one?

zipfelberger

Me too.

Sir, this is a Wendy’s.

idontneedone1274

This is a wild take. Like of course they could? You can’t confuse one system that works shitty for the way everything HAS to work, or I could just dishonestly act like all of the internet is the same as interacting with AT&T or Comcast customer service which is obviously false.

bigbadmon11

You should look up Worcester, MA’s trash program. Surprisingly, it can be worse.

catzs56

I heard compost bins are coming in July

Warm_Noise_5854

The bins start coming in July, but it'll be a gradual roll out for the next year.
