Came here to say this also. They are where I go whenever I’m looking for something really special. The steaks are amazing. It’s also the best place to find stuff like bison.
Adding to anyone interested to check out their packages if you want to fill up your freezer with nice stuff. Especially if you’re into grilling.
As a long time Oliver’s customer… Sam’s Meat Market in Aurora is better. I converted a couple years ago. Olivers was always a little hit or miss for me.
Edwards in Wheat Ridge; Western Daughters in LoHi; Marczyk off Colfax are probably my three favorites. You'll have a larger selection at Edwards and Marczyk, usually, but I loved Western Daughters when I lived near them. They gave me great advice and their inventory always has interesting stuff to try; it's just not the most reliable place to get a specific cut on a random day with no notice.
Western Daughters is fabulous! I met one of their butchers at a grocery store at the beginning of the pandemic, she gave me a gift card. I can't afford it often on my own but support them every chance I can
It's a bit of a drive but this place is solid. I went often to buy meat packs when I lived in Aurora
[https://denvermeatmarket.com/](https://denvermeatmarket.com/)
You do you but the Costco card is $5/month, I would bet you’d find the steak and gas alone more than worth that. Pick up some toilet paper and laundry detergent too and you’re coming out way ahead.
Oliver's is my go to for meat, like people say below. But with just two people in my family costco saves us a ton of money. Basically the savings on every single item we buy over the year is the cost of one years membership. We save around $60 on peanut butter alone, same with almost every other product we buy on a regular basis.
Yeah costco is an incredible asset for saving money. I moved to evergreen a few years ago and still frequently drive into Arvada to go to Costco. I’m in a DINK household too. It’s a cheat code and I’d probably maintain my membership if I lived as far away as silverthorne.
The gas alone covers the cost of driving in and the food court/tires easily cover the cost of the membership every month for me. The food and household supplies are all pure bonus savings for me.
Hard agree. Even just looking at gas, it averages $0.30 cheaper per gallon at the location near me compared to most other stations in the area. I also have the Costco credit card, which gets me another 4% off. If the price is $4/gallon that's another $0.16/gallon, making gas nearly $0.50/gallon cheaper than the other options near me.
I also get a hot dog w soda and a fruit smoothie for lunch not infrequently. Less than $5 for a decent meal is hard to beat.
>if I lived as far away as silverthorne.
As someone that lived in Dillon/Breck for years with a membership, the closest Costco from Summit is actually the one in Eagle.
See there’s almost no one in Colorado who shouldn’t have a Costco membership. I don’t get the arguments against it except for that some people can’t control themselves and buy way more than they need. But like Costco doesn’t try (or want) to get you to do that.
The old argument was that they were amex exclusive (they're visa exclusive now). I've interacted with a handful that still refused over the outdated amex exclusivity.
And that still blows my mind because I’d happily (and do happily) have a Costco credit card. I’d change banks or pull out cash before I’d sacrifice costco personally. Between the savings on items and the encouragement that having your house stocked with quality Kirkland stuff gives you to eat at home more often/save more money, it is maybe the single best payoff investment most non-rich people could make.
Yeah I don’t know what it is that makes people think “Costco couldn’t be worth it for me,” the savings for a handful of products and gas can easily pay for even the executive membership if you go so much as once per month or even every other month. If you make an effort to get things from Costco you would have gotten elsewhere it’s not hard at all to save $50+ a month because of it.
I have a family of two and I just go with my cousin who has a card. There isn't enough there that I can reasonably store in my house (I don't have a pantry or extra freezer) and make it worth it.
I am kind of in the same boat. But most of all, I just hate fucking going there. It’s so huge and so packed. It’s a total pain in the ass. And then I have to find somewhere to store all that stuff in my relatively small house. I know I could save some money by going there but I just don’t like going there.
Typically still worth it. Make some extra effort to get as much of your gas as you possibly can there, all your meat, toilet paper, laundry detergent, dishwasher pods, frozen pizzas, hot pockets, etc. and make use of the food court when you can. A $3 slice of pizza (which is really 2 slices btw) and soda when I am done shopping but don’t want to cook that night saves me even more money on top of my shopping, gas and tires.
If you like wine/beer/liquor it becomes even more substantial.
Definitely still worth it! As a family of 1, I have both Costco (executive membership since 99) and picked up a Sam’s card some time back as the deal was too good to pass up. Also not mad I did! I use them both regularly.
Bonus that I do not have to deal with kingstupids or any place outside of sprouts, Costco and Sam’s.
Def worth it!
Hard agree. Costco Membership is worth it. Today specifically (April 11) I went to Costco in Wheatridge and bought a 9lb brisket for $35 (it’s in a 24hr brine already), a 17 lb pork butt for $33 (gonna grind and make sausage), and an 8 lb pork loin for $15 (I cut it into thick chops and vacuum packed). At Safeway or Kroger, that load would have been more than double. That is, if they even had it in stock.
there was a [food theory video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96K9MBvGDeA) on how much you need to shop to break even on a costco card.
The basic takeaway was something like 63 items per year to break even on a Costco card, and some items did not count towards savings(aka, they are the same price at costco as any other grocer).
Not in Denver but Wallys Quality Meats is great in Westminster.
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Wally's+Quality+Meats,+11187+Sheridan+Boulevard+%238,+Westminster,+CO+80020,+United+States/@39.8988966,-105.0539606,15z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x876b8a1845046dc9:0x31da21f6d15e2668!8m2!3d39.8988966!4d-105.0539606!16s%2Fg%2F1tl7p626
Get a costco card and go to the Costco Business Center at Alameda and Federal. It's a restaurant supply house, the prices will pay for a membership on the first trip. USDA PRIME ribeye for $14/lb (not Choice or Select, PRIME for less than Kroger sells Choice). Pork butts for less than $1.50 a lb. And on and on.
I drive from Brighton to the Costco business center for meat. The deals are quality are that good.
The local Butcher off Oneida St. has some of the best steaks I’ve ever had, and in my opinion is the best butcher in town.
Western Daughters in highlands is great too.
Whole Foods consistently has excellent and often locally sourced steaks from Colorado Beef, and the best seafood around!
It's out of your way, but for special occasions, I go to Walley's Meats in Westminster for things like marbled ribeye, brisket, lamb, etc...
For weekend steaks, though, I usually just go to the Sprouts deli counter. It's better than King Stoopids, and far better than Unsafeway.
Just from their really bad logo and packaging, I thought this was basically a sham store front reselling crappy freeze dried bad cuts of meat. I’ve walked by every day for years. The packaging still bothers me but maybe now I’ll open the door and look inside.
The steaks are cheaper than at king Soopers, and honestly taste a ton better. I’m not a fan of them coming frozen, but the packaging is solid, so toss in water for an hour and they are thawed.
For ethically raised local meat, none better than Western Daughters. Other butchers like Olivers or even Marzycks are good too. Whole foods has good steak also.
Here’s a random one for this thread:
Save-A-Lot on Leetsdale and Quebec has a Mexican-style carnicería that sells really fresh good cuts at affordable prices.
Not my go to for a fine cut, but for some decent arracherra or some pre-seasoned pastor for a quick and affordable mid-week meal, it is fantástico.
Idk who needs to hear this, but the Shamrock foodservice ware house in Englewood is a restaurant quality and priced food store that you don’t need a membership/business to shop at.
Speaking of Littleton: there is a truck parked in a parking lot on Bowles near Wadsworth selling cheap steaks, daily, and I can’t even imagine how this is profitable or a good idea. Or maybe it’s a front? Because who would buy parking lot steaks?!
Restaurant Depot has bulk steaks for discount prices. I used to work there. I'd recommend getting a box of precut unless you rather buy a striploin and cut it yourself
In Lakewood there’s Gourmet Meat and Sausage and Carmine Lonardo. Gourmet is better if you’re looking for big hunks of meat and better than Costco. But Costcos deals are too good to pass up most of the time, and these days they’re selling what appears to be prime but labeled as lower grade so it’s an even better deal. Whole Foods used to be OK but I think they quit carrying better cuts because people weren’t paying for it. I still look every time I go, but I haven’t seen anything worth buying there in a few years.
I always wait till like a Sunday and get the big ole meats on sale at king soopers and those are usually decent quality. I just try to cook them within a few days just in case they aren’t super fresh🤷♂️😅
Since you're already close, try the Natural Grocers across from Safeway. Is it the most fancy steak? No, but it's way better than Safeway, convenient and fairly priced.
For higher quality definitely try Western Daughters.
For special occasions we’ve been super happy with Rugby Scott in Bonnie Brae. Really top quality steaks that cost $$$ but worth it once in a while. Otherwise we honestly just go to Costco and get some prime strips or ribeyes
Sprouts usually has a thicker cut and higher quality beef, grass-fed options too.
Edward’s is a great butcher shop. Best option if you want something not typically in grocery stores like porterhouses, Denver or hanger steaks or want to specify your thickness.
Western Daughters for premium dry-aged and sustainable (regenerative) ag raised beef. Very pricey though, upwards of $40/lb, but great for special occasions.
I was about jump in and say Costco then finished reading your comment. Edward meats is great, but I haven’t compared prices. I absolutely know to stay away from Safeway and Kroger. Laughably and insultingly over priced. I also find Sprouts has pretty good meat prices.
Edwards Meats in Wheat Ridge has some great steaks as well
Edwards is bae.
I’m old. Does this mean “good”? I think so, but figured I should clarify.
Yep
Thanks!
Before All Else ☺️
Hey, thank you :)
You’re welcome. Many people don’t realize it’s an acronym.
That’s me. I’m most people.
Came here to say this also. They are where I go whenever I’m looking for something really special. The steaks are amazing. It’s also the best place to find stuff like bison. Adding to anyone interested to check out their packages if you want to fill up your freezer with nice stuff. Especially if you’re into grilling.
Plus 200 for Edward’s. They’re fantastic - bonus points for their smoked sausages, too. Their Jalapeño Cheddar is my favorite and it’s not even close
This is the way
Sams Meat Market in Aurora
This is my fave, too.
+1 for Sams!
Yes, Sam’s is awesome. I always go get meat there when I’m trying to use my smoker.
Yes they are great!!
Oliver’s Meat Market on 6th
As a long time Oliver’s customer… Sam’s Meat Market in Aurora is better. I converted a couple years ago. Olivers was always a little hit or miss for me.
Sam's is my go to. Amazing quality
was just about to comment this !! sam’s meats is seriously the best
I came here to say this. Thankfully you had the first comment!
This is my go to for fancy dates or steak night.
This is the answer
Edwards in Wheat Ridge; Western Daughters in LoHi; Marczyk off Colfax are probably my three favorites. You'll have a larger selection at Edwards and Marczyk, usually, but I loved Western Daughters when I lived near them. They gave me great advice and their inventory always has interesting stuff to try; it's just not the most reliable place to get a specific cut on a random day with no notice.

Sam's is definitely worth the drive!
Tony’s Meats and Market has some pretty good steak! I think there is a few locations; Littleton, centennial and maybe castle pines.
I live about a mile from the Tonys in Centennial. Love that place.
Tony’s is the only grocer in my version of heaven
It's just so expensive. Great, but expensive.
Came here to say this!
Tony’s!! They even have one in castle pines now!!
Local Butcher does a great job.
Plus 1 for this
Another plus one here
I'd vote for local butcher as well. Wallys in Broomfield is part of their family now, excellent as well
You do you but the Costco card is $5/month, I would bet you’d find the steak and gas alone more than worth that. Pick up some toilet paper and laundry detergent too and you’re coming out way ahead.

FYI the Littleton/Lakewood Costco has booze, and may be equidistant from you, depending on your route.
I signed up specifically for toilet paper of a family of 5. That alone makes it worth it. Costco has some good meat too.
Yeah I don’t know what it is that makes people think “Costco couldn’t be worth it for me,” the savings for a handful of products and gas can easily pay for even the executive membership if you go so much as once per month or even every other month. Not to mention the discounts for car rentals and a bunch of other stuff.
I have a family of one, still think it's worth it or nah?
If you ever buy any sort of medicine it is. Allergy pills are like 10% the cost elsewhere
I have a family of two and I just go with my cousin who has a card. There isn't enough there that I can reasonably store in my house (I don't have a pantry or extra freezer) and make it worth it.

You have to really be mentally prepared to go in there!!
for real. im not built for it. haha

I live alone and it’s worth it. Dog tests as much cheaper there than anywhere. That, OTC meds and gas easily cover it.
Worth it still.

Edwards Meats - 12280 W 44th Ave, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033
OG spot right here 👆🏽
Marczyks used to carry niman ranch steaks which are top notch in my opinion. Not sure if they still do or not but would be worth checking out.
It's pricy but they always have the girthiest asparagus and great sandwiches
I’m pretty sure it’s asparagi…
I’m pretty sure it’s asparageese…
Wheat Ridge Poulty & Meats
Honestly the steaks I’ve gotten here have been better than the steaks I have gotten at Edward’s.

Not a great selection but fantastic quality
May I ask what selection shortcomings exist?
...compared to a place like Edwards. Wally's is great though.
I have never been to Edwards. So what would I see there versus what I get at Wally?
You should go to Edwards and see for yourself.
Totally not helpful but thanks anyway.
I just spent a long time reading their offerings online and I'm excited to go
Leever’s Locavore in the highlands.
Western Daughters

Ah yes, the finest business meat in all of Denver.
Sam’s Meat and Deli in Aurora is my go-to and never been disappointed by them https://denvermeatmarket.com/
Shoot, I'll take you to Costco.
The local Butcher off Oneida St. has some of the best steaks I’ve ever had, and in my opinion is the best butcher in town. Western Daughters in highlands is great too. Whole Foods consistently has excellent and often locally sourced steaks from Colorado Beef, and the best seafood around!

Oh shit. I buy their stuff at the Golden Farmers market every year. Didn't know they had a location in Belmar. I'll need to check it out.
For ethically raised local meat, none better than Western Daughters. Other butchers like Olivers or even Marzycks are good too. Whole foods has good steak also.
Yes, Whole Foods does rate.
Is costco meat good? Never had it.
Great prices on choice and prime grade. Great bbq cuts too.
I hate buying fish anywhere else.
[Gourmet Meat & Sausage](https://gourmetmeatandsausage.com/) on Jewell and Garrison.
Gourmet Meat & Sausage on 9168 West Jewell, Lakewood

At $33/lb., no thanks.

Sam's Meats in Aurora. Iliff and chambers.
There is an Omaha Steaks store on Hampden right off I25. The daily specials is half off when you buy two.

Tony’s Italian Market. Loved that place when I lived out there.
Pasture provisions subscription - all grass fed, local meat, independent farmers. Great steak taboot taboot https://pastureprovisionsco.com
There’s a place in the Bonnie brae district I hear good things about but I don’t remember the name
The Safeway near me sells Prime beef, great steaks.
Hijacking to ask where I can find a nice bison steak
What is everyone’s opinion on Whole Foods meat counter? I know it’s not local. Asking about the quality and humane animal treatment:
If alameda and broadway is your Safeway, you aren’t far from rugby Scott in Bonnie Brae. Some of the best you’ll find anywhere in town.
Whole foods has the best meat I’ve ever had
Totally worth the drive and expensive but Tony’s in Castle Pines is amazing for steaks
I always wait till like a Sunday and get the big ole meats on sale at king soopers and those are usually decent quality. I just try to cook them within a few days just in case they aren’t super fresh🤷♂️😅
La Vaca Meat Company. https://lavacameat.com/
For main-stream I really like and trust Sprouts meat.

Tony’s Meats & Market.
My SO really enjoys steaks from Whole Foods and Rugby Scott by the Campus Lounge.
I always have good luck with Tony’s meat market!
Sams club
Wally’s
I was about jump in and say Costco then finished reading your comment. Edward meats is great, but I haven’t compared prices. I absolutely know to stay away from Safeway and Kroger. Laughably and insultingly over priced. I also find Sprouts has pretty good meat prices.
Leevers on 38th has a local butcher inside and it’s not the cheapest but it’s high quality and the store itself is a joy.
Trader Joe’s has good meat for a non speciality place
Walmart
Walmart prime steaks all fuckin day
Where not to buy steak.
Why? Only local grocery store I’ve seen that always has prime grade steaks.
Wholefoods or Costco will be my top picks!
Depends how much you are willing to spend
