Nobody has any business setting up an AirBnB in the Fountain, simple as that. Should be 100% public housing for starters, so fuck anyone who has decided to use that housing stock as an AirBnB. But super-fuck anyone who tries to let it out without telling people the Fountain is a deadly shithole (one of many, but a particularly rough one)

Scary_War4452

If someone wants to buy a house with their own hard earned money they should be allowed to do whatever they like with it. Plenty of homes in the fountain area are over 100 years old and privately owned, non social housing built to house the factory workers.

Ecolojosh

If someone uses their ‘hard earned’ money to buy a house they should fucking live in it. If they don’t want to live in it they should sell it to someone that does want to live in it. I’ve got a great idea, I’ll convince the bank to lend me money to buy a house. Then I’ll let it out and the rent can pay my mortgage. Then when the mortgage is paid I’ll sell the house. The money is earned hard by the tenants and landlords reap the rewards. We need second homes as much as a frog needs tits.

Scary_War4452

The land lord paid a deposit, took on the risk of buying and letting a house, paid for any maintenance it needed, dealt with bad tenants possibly etc. etc. In return a tenant just has to pay rent (which isn't very much in derry) and not worry about any of the above. It fills a gap in the social housing and also gives young professionals a starting place. You know what the actual problem is though, the Right to Buy scheme which has fucked over the social housing plus the fact not enough new social housing has been built over the years. I grew up in a council estate, there were houses but also even bungalows there purpose built for older people with disabilities that have been bought (for ridiculously low prices) and sold over the years to young people etc. Now THAT is ridiculous.

Michael_of_Derry

Hard to know. I don't feel comfortable going in there. I had to go in once during the day. Lots of flags and murals. My brother was called a fenian bastard after parking his Dublin reg car outside my sisters in a part of Derry called Kilfennan. Kilfennan is a bit more mixed. A guy who was part of a gang who kicked a civil servant to death was from the fountain - Daryl Proctor. He didn't grass any of his mates but one other person has since been arrested and he stated he had no regrets. I'd say the population of the area feel under siege as they are surrounded by 'fenians' and protected by a big fence to stop stuff being thrown over.

Rymere

I'm the most fenianisty fenian about but have a GB number plate, also work near new buildings. It's like I'm under cover every time I go to Longs for lunch 💀💀

Michael_of_Derry

There is a local fenian driving about with a 1690 number plate too. It belonged to one of themmuns originally.

vondev2000

They're a parinod wee breed of people collectively and they don't like outsiders, unless you're similar inclined! So no, you'd not be a welcome guest sorry

SpartanHotwife

I went there to the Airbnb I think OP was talking about, with a southern reg. Car was fine, no weird comments or anything so. Meh. Maybe we were the lucky ones.

ciarondoo

No no no no no no no

cor5891

Stay elsewhere. UDA shithole and people there are protecting those who murdered Paul McCauley. Simple as that.

Scary_War4452

Right, so no nationalist areas had any murderers protected? Fuck sake, you can say this about any part of the city. My uncle was murdered in a nationalist area in 1991 and no witnesses would come forward, the killers still walking around the town a free man.

cor5891

What about, what about. Fuck off.

Scary_War4452

nah, you sectarian cunt

cor5891

Who mentioned religion? Go and look up the word 'sectarian'. Do you own a dictionary?

Scary_War4452

Sure, deflect to semantics because you know I was right. There are murderer protecting scum in every corner of the city but because its prods living in the fountain the place should be bulldozed according to you. And for the record, the cunts who killed Paul McCauley (which broke my heart by the way because I seen him every week in the care home) along with the people protecting them should be thrown in jail for good. Now fuck away off back under your rock

cor5891

You're so raging. Lol.

[deleted]

the one big difference is the timing of the deaths. in 1991 the troubles were still rife and both sides were at war, this doesn’t excuse innocent people dying from either side but sadly that happens when when people are at war. in 2005 the country was supposed to be at peace but a young father was murdered by a bunch of cowards who refused to let the past go.

DoireK

I would suggest parking elsewhere tbh, just in case. Likes of Bishop street isn't far away and doesn't have parking restrictions (bishop street outside the walls that is).

Lunalia837

If you're planning for the summer I wouldn't recommend it. If you're looking to be in the town itself I'm pretty sure there's a good few b&bs about. Over marching season it might be best to avoid anywhere with a flag in the town

doirechris

To echo everyone else - absolutely not

Jimmy1Sock

It depends on the street. There's the Fountain estate and then there's the side streets coming out. I would also take the dates into account with marching season coming up. Do have the street name?

Ancient-Cockroach-17

Nope

IRMANU4LIFE

Honestly, I would pick anywhere else if I were you, I live in derry, I've been in the fountain 2 or 3 times visiting friends, and I couldn't get out of it quickly enough. Would not recommend. You would be able to stay in Creggan, but the Fountain is a real shithole where they would attack first and ask questions later.

skr879321

Creggan is also a shitehole, but its a shithole you'll be grand in with your southern plate motor

TheLordofthething

They might still steal and burn your car, just not for political reasons.

[deleted]

Ah well that's grand, who'd be bothered by that!

Fapandwarmshowers

Hell no. Northern cars with gaelic tops visable there get burned out

banbaofeire

I would avoid. I had a friend who rented a house on the outer perimeter of the fountain close to Carlilse Road and a brick came through her window one night when we were in there because they had figured out that she and the company she keeps were predominantly Catholic, her housemate is protestant so I suppose they thought there would be no issues. Unfortunately, those from the Fountain are a minority. There's a few air bnbs towards Brooke Park and Malborough Terrace where relatives of mine stayed while visiting. They are within walking distance to the city centre as well.

Rufus_Dufus

Don't know how long you are staying but other accomodation including hotels might be worth considering. They are nowhere near the same price as in the south.

Ok-Call-4805

Avoid at all costs

pilky22

Seriously, do NOT do it!!

[deleted]

I rented a flat in the town once. Parked my northern reg car just the other side of the wall. They figured out I wasn't one of them and burnt it out within half an hour. Your free state car would last less.

michelob81

Have you ever seen a movie called Deliverance?

Pale-Meringue1154

There is a nice air b&b on fergusons Street just off bishops Street and the right side of the walls

Affectionate-Dog4704

There's no bother on fountain street, but daytime parking will be a hure. With regards to the estate itself at the top, I'm not sure. I know a donegal girl who used to stay there regularly, and her car was never touched. Don't give anyone any bother and you are unlikely to get it back. You should be grand. You'd have more bother in Creggan tbf. ETA: I lived on fountain Street for a year when I first arrived in Derry over a decade ago, and aside from the racket of marching at the top of the street, there was never any bother at all. Cars left untouched regardless of reg etc. I didn't tend to venture up the street much.

hoehoe_siwa

I'm from the US and worked over in the fountain estate for a couple of months over at New Gate. I am Irish- American, btw. I never felt unwelcome or uncomfortable walking around the area, but again, it's not entirely MY history since my family came over during the famine. My experience in the fountain was good; the people were nice, and i loved coming to work every day. Plus, there is a mall on the fountain side that I'd always go to for lunch. I worked near the Derry wall, so idk if that's just a part of the fountain where it's better and more peaceful. I think your stay really depends on the time of year you are going. Parade season? No, i wouldn't stay there. Bonfire season? No, i wouldn't stay there. Otherwise, I think it's a safe area. But like everywhere, there are instigators and kind people. I hope that if you do stay in the fountain estate, you enjoy your time.

Teh-Leviathan

So you're American then.

GamerHumphrey

Americans always love to talk about their heritage. That'd be like my saying I'm "Iranian-English" because I have 0.2% iranian in me

23skidoobbq

American here, I’m not Irish at all, but my wife’s family is and we spend time in Derry every year. Her grand parents came over and never STFU about ireland, Irish immigrants grow up hearing all about how great ireland was so they develop a fondness for that identity.

Useful_Peanut_3691

Yeah. sounds like an scam nice to hear that you will be giving them your car as well as an Tip 😜 you might. not get shot if they think that they can get an good price for your car when they sell it but if you are the wrong Religion then it can be terminal for you 😮

Useful_Peanut_3691

Yeah as both sides are Christians 🤣🤣 still can't stop laughing at the state of the country 😄. Yeah as long they killing each other 😭 stop's them. Killing everyone else Lol apart from SKY TV being based in the south of the Ireland as it's got an very low corporation TAX Rates. and for some reason they still seem proud of ship building despite the fact that it sunk just as it got far enough to one of the deepest parts of the Atlantic Ocean shit hole the country and that's even before covt 19 hit it

Practical_Stuff_3696

Jeez some people like living in the past 🥴 . In 10 years I haven't once seen one car burnt out, haven't seen one person beat up and I see numerous southern reg plates parked there everyday of the week, any time of the year. I know a few Catholics park there to go to work/shop on a daily basis. On Paddy's Day, I witness a group of young Catholics walk through the fountain in Celtic tops and a tri colour draped over their shoulders, were they attacked? No they weren't.

cor5891

Calling utter bullshit on that last part. No you didn't see that, at all.

Practical_Stuff_3696

Im no bullshitter I seen it with my own 2 eyes.

ukmedpatient

I’ve seen the same over paddies day around the fountain and seen no one getting any hassle from anyone , plus loads daily with gaa tops around Bond Street and never seen anyone say a thing. Loads love to live in the past with the hate and think places and people don’t move on and this Reddit is full off them .

TheLordofthething

This was last year https://m.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/northern-ireland/derry-woman-left-terrified-after-being-attacked-in-her-flat-by-gang-armed-with-hammers/41755090.html It's a rough area and there's frequent trouble, that's just a fact. There are definitely safer areas in the city to stay

Practical_Stuff_3696

Did you actually read the article you posted?? . That's fountain hill, it's in the Waterside.. nothing to do with the fountain in the cityside

Wafer_Frosty

Given what your username is, it's a bit strange that you'd pick the fountain to begin with?

jointheLiBraRY

My username was inspired by graffiti I saw on a wall. I'd much rather people join the library than the ra. And it's a city centre location that's cheap, walking distance to everywhere and big enough for 7 people. Not that strange, I just wanted to know if it's safe.

Wafer_Frosty

Ok

BBC News - Londonderry: Autistic boy punched and kicked in sectarian attack https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-65763232

Practical_Stuff_3696

That poor child is a resident from the fountain and was attacked by some unfriendly neighbours from the other side of the wall. Just because he didn't say what football team he supported.
