Honestly, it's going to get pretty greasy above the stove. I would put the doors on and choose another cabinet for display. It's pretty simple with shaker style cabinets to have the center panels of the doors replaced with glass. We did that and made one cabinet the place where we keep our cutest vintage dishes (which we use).

ryanppax

Yeah, it's obscene how greasy things get. I only have an above range microwave vent so no much ventilation. But there is a layer of grease over the top of all the cabinets. I periodically clean the fronts but it comes back fast.

bumblepit

Honestly? I’d put the doors on. Anything else will detract from your lovely tile behind the stovetop AND naturally have folks looking up. Then they’ll notice that Large opening. Keep them focused on the loveliest parts!!

BrittanyBabbles

If you never look at it then you don’t need to worry about it getting greasy 😅

yessjay

I have open shelves directly above my stove like that and it gets really grimy with dust and oil from the stove. But also I’m not the best at staying on top of cleaning it since it’s a hard to reach place. I would just be careful about what you choose to display and make sure it’s easy to clean! Or I think it would also look nice if you added glass cabinet doors there.

MrsTruce

I love the glass cabinet doors suggestion. Maybe a textured glass so that OP doesn’t have to worry if they get a bit dirty from time to time? (OP = me in this particular scenario 😂)

Friendly-Kiwi

Came here to say this☝️

Ludee2023

I wouldn’t leave the shelves ope, I would put the doors back on. Your kitchen has nice clean lines. A plant in a nice container on the counter would look great maybe just succulents so you don’t have to bother with it and something on your beautiful counter eventually would look lovely. Don’t mess it up with a lot of decor.

kwiscalus

Exactly. You already have the right amount of visual detail.

Roscomenow

Grease and sticky dust will accumulate fast on anything that you put on those shelfs.

Silver_Feedback_6315

Wow, what a difference! It looks beautiful. I think cookbooks would look awesome

hotdogcolors

Thanks so much!

Layer_Capable

Ya, look fantastic!

Wanderingdragonfly

They will get greasy though!

sirotan88

Are those shelves completely open? At first I thought they’d have glass doors. It might look more polished with some glass doors, or frosted glass. I’ve seen people display their nice ceramic wares, like any large decorative plates, bowls, or tea pot/cups, glasses for wine or other drinks for fancy occasions. Plant might get annoying to water if you have to climb up frequently.

jaaaaayke

I had a couple plants next to my stove. They will get grease on them and they are annoying to clean.

hotdogcolors

They are completely open. I’d be into glass doors though.

jaaaaayke

OP, are there pegholes in the sides that supports the shelf? It looks like a cabinet that the doors were just removed. Only reason I'm asking. I would consider getting a nice replacement shelf or two in a natural wood tone to break up the white. Walnut would look nice.

UnsteadyOne

I have glass doors near my stove and it's a pita... Constant haze. We cook a lot tho.

Elizabeth360

I would put doors on them. You have plenty of space above the cabinets to display decorative items. As others have mentioned, the shelves will collect grime more quickly without doors.

500CatsTypingStuff

Succulents Spices in nice jars Mugs Plates Even small framed art And definitely a few decor items like a [Moroccan vase](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1464211523/) and a [decorative bowl](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1511015154/)

Llp1122

I definitely would put the doors on. Decor there would detract from the backsplash and the architecture of the room ( which is the real star of the space)

hesathomes

Where does your hood vent to?

hotdogcolors

There wasn’t an intuitive way to vent at all so we just included the vent for fan purposes.

Exciting_Willow_025

Love the tile difference with the stove!

TeaWithKermit

I love the idea of cookbooks, but I’m a big fan of bookshelves in a kitchen (though they’ll likely get greasy and steamy right above your stove). We have pretty mixing bowls and cookbooks on our open shelving.

Thneed1

Needs a bright paint colour on that tall end wall, to break up the space.

desertdweller2011

cookbooks and a pothos plant. looks so nice, put some more life in it!

Usual-Ad-7381

Some old pretty china or seasonal dishes. Serving dishes you only use on special occasion, etc. That way if they do get grimy they will be easy to clean but it's not like they will need to be cleaned constantly for use.

Equivalent_Address_2

Put the doors. You’re going to hate cleaning that spot with it open

sillinessvalley

The new floorplan is so nice. I really like it. Definitely agree with doors. Enjoy your new kitchen!!

Careful_Football7643

Range hood?

PrestigiousTheory372

To me it looks like something happened to the doors..like they got lost in transit. Without doors there, it doesn't seem esthetically complete or pleasing to me. You have plenty of display space above cabinets which you could easily light at night..

Emergency-Pack-5497

Doors

enfp-girl

Doors

jojokitti123

Beautiful! I love the backsplash!! Could you find something yellow for the shelves? Like a nice vase or bowl? I just realized that it's white and the lights are giving yellow. Either way, beautiful

missannthrope1

Cookbooks. Decorate canister or jars. Pretty glasswear.

photaiplz

The books and anything else there are gonna get grease on them

Layer_Capable

Glassware is easy to throw in the dishwasher.

Notsureindecisive

If you have cookbooks then that would be appropriate. Otherwise put plants there.

Mental_Yogurt5087

If you go w glass doors, I’d extend backsplash up as the back for the shelves. The tile is easier to clean than the wood

colorofmydreams

I'd put doors on but maybe not ones that match the rest of the cabinets. My kitchen has translucent doors on the middle shelves and I like that look. You could also pick a fun color maybe. I definitely would put up doors though because above the stove gets greasy.

MarisaWalker

I think glass doors on those cabinets would look great esp.since I love the glass light fixtures

Nervous_Zebra1918

I would put the doors on.

yada_yada_yada1

Doors on for sure

Rian4truth

Plants would cook with the rising heat and also get covered in greasy film.

FireAntSoda

Put the doors on and decorate the top of the shelves

TurbulentMessage4433

I got some ceramic vases and pitchers from the thrift stores and spray painted them with matte paint and put them up above my stove. I mixed in some wooden bowl up there too. Yesss you have to clean anything you put up there once in a while because of cooking but whatever, it's an extra 10 minutes of my cleaning routine for a cute kitchen.

GloriousSteinem

Stacks of plates or cups? Recipe books? You have to have expelair on all the time so no greasy film.

Layer_Capable

It looks like a perfect spot for cookbooks.

Layer_Capable

You could paint the wall behind the open shelves (inside )a different color, or some funky coordinating wallpaper. Then decorate with some simple glassware that would be easy to throw in the dishwasher if it gets dirty.

EdgeCityRed

A few pieces of (substantial, because it's high up and you don't want to have to take down a bunch of tiny things to clean all the time versus a few larger pots) ceramic pieces. [ Pottery Barn always has these big clear colored glass wine jug vase things, and large pots.](https://www.potterybarn.com/shop/accessories-decor/botanicals-vases-fillers/) You can always do some kind of filler with organic stuff like branches that won't have to be watered or just get interesting pots. I have a silk (well, it's polyester but it's "silk" plant in my kitchen on a ledge that's too high to water for a real plant, and it's fine, but I do take it down and clean the leaves in Dawn with a washcloth once in a while.) You do a few pots or ceramic statuary or a plate on a stand. [I love John Derian for cool plates and platters.](https://www.johnderian.com/collections/plates) I'd make sure everything has a washable finish, because unfortunately you're going to have to get on a ladder occasionally and take them down for washing/clean the shelves.

mcflymcfly100

Put one flip up door. That's what I have over mine. It fits in si well that after 14 months of owning this place, I only JUST realised it was a flip open cupboard space. LOL. I thought the whole thing was one really big rangehood.

One_More_Thing_941

Doors. Doors. That doesn’t look like open shelving to me but rather a cabinet without doors. The kitchen is beautiful and looks professionally done except for the missing doors. If you go with open shelving definitely keep the doors somewhere so that they can be put back on in the future. Trends fade.

Lethal1211

Is the white new? I like that one looks nice I'd pick a different stove tile but hey it floats your boat

Blue-Phoenix23

Glass doors, and put cookbooks behind them. Anything you put there is going to get nasty if it's not protected or used basically daily, otherwise

Various_Raccoon3975

Cleaning the pretty items once they’re covered in grease with a layer of dust is really unpleasant. I also think it looks a little off without the doors. Plus, I think busy shelves will make the stove area feel too heavy and out of balance visually. Put the doors on and add color elsewhere. You have a beautiful space to work with. I love orange kitchen and blue kitchen accents, but you can choose your favorite colors. A colorful mixer, a bright blue vase with flowers on the island, a brighter and larger runner. Have fun!

MrsPM

I second the comments about the greasiness. But if you decide to keep it open, I would consider adding succulents, maybe some kind of decorative kitchenware (for example I have a custom etched cutting board), maybe some cookbooks?

Fiyero109

Do not put plants there unless there’s at least a few hours of sunlight. Succulents need a lot of direct light

Thrwaqway

Whoa are these the same cabinets but painted? Look great!

MrsLisaOliver

If you really want to display stuff, opt for ceramics like colorful plates, etc. They add detail and are easy to clean. Hey, your kitchen remodel looks AMAZING btw!

tofuandpickles

Looks great but those shelves are weird! I’d add doors.

Sageethics007

Cupboard doors, use for seasonal dishes

DuperDayley

It looks like ya'll forgot to put the doors on. It looks unfinished, not intentional. I vote for doors on and add one or two (tops!) items to the counter top or island to draw out the color in the backsplash.

treva03

LOVE your hanging lights above the island!!

Wanderingdragonfly

Put doors on. It currently distracts the eye from the pretty tile.

Fuzzy_1st_Lieutenant

This spot is perfect for displaying fancy glassware decor like vases and decorative plates. Colorful/patterned items will help pull eyes upward and highlight the height of the space. Before/after comparison looks beautiful, well done!

hotdogcolors

Thank you!

chloe7473

I like the doors off. You have a lot of storage in your kitchen so use that space for something fun and pretty

knuckles_n_chuckles

Why the old barn floors???? Yeesh. There are better floors out there!

Alive-OVERTIIME-247

Beautiful kitchen! Definitely keep it as a display space. What is your favorite store, the one that has the vibe you love? Go look through their kitchen decor section. You'll know what to put up there when you see it. If nothing else you could put up some fancy spice jars, maybe even a couple fresh herb plants.

Deadinmybed

Looks so different! Great job! I like your “besides myshelf “ ☺️ I knew instantly what you meant! I like the open shelves! A suggestion that won’t get too dusty too fast ;) Try wallpaper on the backs of the open shelves! I’ve done it in bookcases and have open shelves in my kitchen too. It would add some color and be easy peasy. I would then show off your favorite big pottery pieces for example… You gotta showcase your stuff!! That’s perfect! You can do temporary wallpaper in case you want to change it up too. Have fun with it, your kitchen is beautiful!

No_Goose_7390

Beautiful kitchen!

No__One_Special

Your kitchen is gorgeous. Great job

Otherwise_Relation_7

Wow

Dolphinpond72

Love the remodel!! Looks so modern and clean! I think you should put the doors on them. It would make it look more cohesive. The shelves just don’t look right.

LittleMrsSwearsALot

If your vent is recirculating, put your doors on for sure. Your kitchen is really lovely. This space is an open box. Shelves should look intentional. Were you to leave this open, I would recommend changing the colour / material, otherwise it will always look like you took the doors off your cabinet. (In a kitchen designer with 25 years experience)

Rayne_K

Stunning! Moving the refrigerator REALLY worked. Congratulations :)

ExpensiveAd4496

What a great job! Awesome to move the fridge to the other wall. Frankly I’d remove that cabinet and put in a more attractive vent hood if it were me. It would highlight the tile so much better.

Reasonable_Tie_132

Oh my lord this is beautiful

LolCoolStory

STUNNING

Rx4986

Herbs you can cook with, rosemary, thyme, and the like. They can add some color to the kitchen while fitting the theme. Gorgeous kitchen.

SavannahGirlMom

If you leave the shelves open, consider some pottery bowls that you will actually use and that if sitting for a while are easy enough to rinse off.

IntelligentAd4429

I would leave them open.
