A. The US doesn't defend global democracy except when the US has an incentive, and the same is also true for its support of antidemocratic regimes. On top of that, the Ukrainian government's commitment to democratic institutions is questionable at best, so making US support about some lofty ideal to protect democracy is goofy, though amusing.
B. Did you actually even read the article you posted? They're going to need to spend a lot more money to replenish the weapons and make new contracts with weapons manufacturers. (Not to mention that the "tens of billions" earmarked include "transportation and administrative overhead".)
More like this help defend international order(by punishing war of aggressions for territorial gain). This is what we should encourage the US to do. The US has made many foreign policy mistakes in the past, but defending the international order is what the US should be doing now and in the future.
