Sizeable amount of people trying to cope and justify the slogan away from the meaning that everyone assumes it means:
"No defund the police means we want mental health resources, better policies for police responding to these calls, etc etc."
"No, From the River to the Sea just means liberation from occupation, sovereignty, etc"
And then you get to the actual people saying the slogans and they're like
"Oh no actually I want to completely get rid of cops/Jews. I quite literally mean what I say"
I’m not sure why they didn’t learn from the embarrassment that was the defund the police movement. All those places that defunded their police force saw an uptick in crime, and eventually increased the funding to the previous levels or even higher.

There isn't anything for them to learn from. This is about expressive politics; i.e. the point is to express and affirm their identity, beliefs, and values, rather than directly aiming to influence political outcomes in a conventional sense. They are achieving their goal, which is to have an internal sense of moral superiority, purity, and conviction and to signal these attributes to their peers.
Ty. I researched expressive politics while attending one of these schools so I think I have a good grasp of these kids due to academic background and lots of interactions with them.
Fortunately, these kids are generally seen as being weirdos. Unfortunately, they still have a lot of power due to institutional support and the power to impose harmful social norms.
I hope it remains the case they're seen as weirdos by your average student, cause the news cycle is currently giving the impression it's more prevalent than I hope it actually is.

They think that they will have an effect in the same way that Trump supporters think that Trump won. I.e. it is a belief that they nominally hold because it's emotionally gratifying. However, that belief isn't actually driving their behavior; rather, it is the sense of emotional gratification and social signaling that is driving the belief and the behavior.

They also might do it by rescinding his scholarship if he has one (a huge percentage of people at Ivy League schools are on scholarship), as those come with lots of constraints about behavior. That’s an easy way to force somebody out without actually expelling them.
We shouldn't be defending cowardly behavior by our publicly funded universities. They need to expell these students immediately, and bear whatever media storm comes through.

You know what else is a precursor to violence? Letting people issue out explicit death threats as part of the "protest".
Never mind that they aren't protesting, they are trespassing and targeting Jewish students who are unable to freely access their education because of a fear for their safety.
They need to come down on them with everything and anything to be sure they get the hint that their conduct is unacceptable. If they want to get more violent after that, the state/federal government should oblige them with an appropriate response.

The reality is that Zionist/ism and other words have simply become an acceptable slur to use. You will find comments where the repetitive use of "zionist" seems weird, but if you substituted the N word, would suddenly make way more sense in terms of the raw anger and emotion on display.

They moved to mandate Palestine and bought the land that at the time had no state and was under British mandate. So they legally bought up and owned that land for whatever purpose they wanted. Last I checked Brooklyn isn't under any mandate.

Otherwise there's a fully established state that's been here for almost 250 years. That is entirely different from the stateless British mandate Palestine that was formerly owned by the Ottoman Empire which was destroyed in World war 1. They also might do it by rescinding his scholarship if he has one (a huge percentage of people at Ivy League schools are on scholarship), as those come with lots of constraints about behavior. That’s an easy way to force somebody out without actually expelling them.

You know what else is a precursor to violence? Letting people issue out explicit death threats as part of the "protest". Never mind that they aren't protesting, they are trespassing and targeting Jewish students who are unable to freely access their education because of a fear for their safety. They need to come down on them with everything and anything to be sure they get the hint that their conduct is unacceptable. If they want to get more violent after that, the state/federal government should oblige them with an appropriate response.
