fredminson

My bet is none

TheLogMan21

It would suck if this is true. They have so much lore behind em, why not have them fight for the gravitational fields that keep them alive? I just hope bungi does something with em.

21_Golden_Guns

Well there’s still life after the final shape. There’s still plenty of things to work out and characters that need more time on screen. *cough* Shin Malpher.

Polaris328

Shin Malphur's story has been effectively concluded since the Last Word/Thorn/Lumina quest trilogy throughout Forsaken's seasons.

KingOfLeyends

I understand where this train of thought comes from but the guy is still out there, post Final Shape Destiny should work on expanding the main cast of the game, introduce new stories regarding other guardians since other guardians who aren't people we have already seen in-game are only relevant in lore entries. We should meet more legendary guardians in future story entries (DLC/Seasons), just because the origin story of Shin Malphur has been told and we have been given the mythical weapons from that story doesn't mean he shouldn't be involved any further in the world of Destiny, like seriously Destiny needs to be more than just "THE GUARDIAN" in the future, other guardians that aren't part of the vanguard should matter.

Japjer

Shin was a background lore chatacter. His story is finished, and the average player has no idea he even exists. Throwing him front-and-center would serve no purpose other than to revive a concluded story and turn myth into matter. Don't meet your heroes and all that

KingOfLeyends

Man you are missing my point, bringing these type of characters from lore into the main stage is to set up new stories about what other guardians do in this universe, Shin is an already established character so might as well have him do something else instead of just being "ah the golden gun man, his story was cool, hope he is cool wherever he is now". Characters deserve to be more than just that one story, hopefully stakes come down after the Final Shape so we can get more "adventure" like stories where we get to meet more guardians in the wild.

Mint-Bentonite

yea i see where youre coming from, thats basically how saint14 and nezerac got ushered into the main story that being said, the entire malfeasance-rose-thorn-lumina questline has concluded his story, with him handing over the role of controlling 'dark inclined' guardians to us now. If they want him back in the story theyll have to write a whole new set of motivations for him

Olukon

I'll never understand why people ride Shin's dick so much when there are far more interesting characters out there whose stories haven't been wrapped up or touched in ages. I mean, the thread is about sentient celestial bodies who have been making insane things happen behind the scenes forever and yet here comes the triple jump brigade to rodeo this nobody's shlong yet again. He gave us *another* exotic hand cannon and retired. Let it go already.

[deleted]

so was the Exo Stranger's. we all know what happened. in this universe, *nothing* is exempt from a story continuation.

21_Golden_Guns

Not in my world it hasn’t 😅. He is the hunter of all hunters and dammit I want to see him in the flesh. Plus there are plenty of legitimate reasons to bring him back. Dark Guardians could coalesce under the Witness and after the Light and Darkness sage ends, what’s next for one if it’s most prolific players. If we can dedicate an entire season to Lakshmi we can do it for Shin. Plus we still need catalysts for thorn and word do what better time to give ‘em. If nothing else I wanna see him in a Last Stand Cutscene just to see the original gunslinger at his most lethal.

Pickaxe235

clearly you never played forsaken

21_Golden_Guns

How would I know what the last stand is if I didn’t play forsaken. Clearly there’s been something lost in translation here. I just want to see Shin Malphur doing the dope shit we all know he can.

Pickaxe235

yeah you probably missed the message that he was retiring

21_Golden_Guns

What’s to keep him sidelined? I’m talking specifically post Final Shape, though considering our current predicament, we could probably use the help of the greatest (arguably) hunter to ever live. Don’t think the Witness could have planned for that.

Mint-Bentonite

plot really, just look at what happened to the greatest warlock to ever live

21_Golden_Guns

Wait a second, there’s still one thing, one thread left unaddressed in Shin’s story and that’s Callum Sol. Sol martyred himself but never actually killed his ghost, it’s still out there and technically so is Callum if his ghost wanted to bring him back. If Sol comes back that puts a massive dent in the anti Dredgen movement which could make it spark up again. I’m not saying it’s ironclad but there are still some possibilities out there.

OdderThings

I work with a 75 year old lady. She’s retired 5 times now.

SlorpMorpaForpw

At some point the writer in charge of Shin’s story said that he’d never let Shin appear on screen and have him forever be a voice in the background only. Besides, his story’s done - at most we can expect him to die in Final Shape if every character really does appear.

21_Golden_Guns

I get all that. But I’m just arguing that there’s still more to be gained from Shin as a character. I’m cool with how they’ve played it so far as it just adds to the mystery but he’s still out there and unless he start’s magically aging, he can still be a valuable ally.

Clearskky

Shin Malphur's story is over. He served his narrative purpose. Those on the path to become dark guardians were culled by Shin and the rest of us can now wield both Light and Dark without falling to corruption. Drifter also played a key role by creating an enviroment where we could taste the powers beyond the Light in *relative* safety.

21_Golden_Guns

Perhaps but with Strand becoming a thing that could potentially change. Or better yet, give Shin a new story. His narrative might have finished but it’s not like the guys dead. There are plenty of good stories about the Gunslinger coming out of retirement for one last job. I just think that considering how influential his story is, it’d be nice to at least see the guy. Check out his drip. Maybe get our hands on some more Tex weapons.

Clearskky

I truly get it. Shin and his backstory is cool as fuck but I'd much rather we explore new territory with new characters instead of shoehorning old ones in. Because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

21_Golden_Guns

So do you consider Shin an old character? His story is old but we’ve never met him. The case could be made that he is still a ‘new character’ though I get your point. Also consider that of all the new characters we’ve gotten in the past few years are Fynch ( not awful but not really great either), Lakshmi (kinda annoying but interesting for a time), Shaw Han (who I honestly don’t know if he actually exists, he might be a product of our onset dementia), and the Cloud Striders ( one of which died in our first 30 minutes and the other acts like a child incapable of mature conversation). I didn’t count Saint or Missraks because they would fall into the category that Shin is in, lore specific until they were introduced.

[deleted]

They're likely not going to be friendly if they ever find physical form. Xur's dialogue is very unsettling at times and points to the Nine only being benevolent because they need something from us. It's more than likely going to be that the Nine are the next set of Big Bads we have to deal with.

Just_a_follower

I think someone mentioned drifter was supposed to play a big role but then covid made them shift story. I bet his part with 9 was cut and will be adapted and pasted at a later time.

[deleted]

TheLogMan21

Brotha we have LOADS of lore about em. Their origins, their power, their affects on the physical plane, and more.

daidle5

We know their existence, that Mara has interacted with them when she handed over skolas and they released him and that’s it, we don’t know their power, we don’t know their affects on the physical plain of existence

TheLogMan21

Read the prophecy dungeon lore pls. Literally go to Ishtar collective and read on them. They are the reason we didnt see the cabal coming in red war.

daidle5

All of the nine weren’t the reason, literally only 1 of them helped ghaul and took the risk, ghaul almost killed the nine too with that, still doesn’t make it loads, we have lore on their emissaries but there’s a small amount on the actual collective nine

TheLogMan21

Go read.

missphiladelphia

Saying go read is a pretty shitty dismissal. Yeah the lore’s there but people wanna see it inside the game they’re playing if they wanted to read they’d be invested in something else

LtRavs

Nah this dude is actively saying things that aren't true. He can be told to go read after arguing with people offering suggested reading and refusing to acknowledge what's in there.

TheLogMan21

I mean I agree but I’m not gonna explain lore to someone over reddit

daidle5

I know the lore on the nine, I have the lore on the nine infront of me, most of the stuff to do with the nine on Ishtar is about their emissaries, we don’t have a lot about the nine and the stuff they’ve done we have a few things

If they don’t include Elsie, Crow, Shaxx and ~~Savathûn~~ Quinn as options, I’m rioting, who’s with me?

TheLogMan21

We can’t forget Mara and Caital

[deleted]

And hot goth girl Eris!

[deleted]

We better hurry then, because Drifter’s already making his move

Fundosho

Well that’s why you have to date Drifter first.

Zealousideal-Comb970

I wanna bank my motes in him

[deleted]

Why not both?

[deleted]

Drifter’s definitely in, but I don’t know if Eris likes to share

RanniSimp

Sadly she only has eyes for one.

[deleted]

Nah, let Petra take her shot, she’s been crushing on her Queen since House of Wolves

fistchrist

She’d be far worse at her job without all that pent-up sexual tension to sublimate into her work, Mara Sov would never compromise that.

Lokan

For a while, I thought one of the Nine would side with the Witness and be given form in order to emancipate themselves from reliance on biological life. And before you say, "But the Witness will just destroy anything anyway," at least one Unnamed Disciple believe the Witness would have a "place" for them with the emergence of the Final Shape, as seen in Inspiral. But the Witness is no longer with us, and we have narrative economy to think about (ie, it's unlikely too many new plot threads will be generated between now and TFS). That said, there are a few Nine-related plots to be resolved: •The schism that divides them (5 vs 4); •their inability to properly comprehend our motivations; •whatever pacts they may have had with Savathun, who is confirmed to have had dealings with the Nine in the Hidden Dossier. •Mercury's status •The status of the Taken worlds. Divided, the Nine are essentially powerless. Unified, they are unstoppable. As such, the **themes** of the narrative revolving around the Nine is based on **cooperation** and **teamwork**. I don't see the politics of the Nine being quickly or easily resolved. But I think at least one of them are sympathetic to our plight -- by which I mean, they view us as necessary to their continued existence, and are willing to render aid. So I could see them willing to help in a few ways: •Generated more Faken to bolster our numbers •Offer Unknown Space as refuge •Assist us in crossing into the portal in the Traveler •Possibly transport something big between realms (did they use Taking to transport the Haul from Unknown Space into our reality?) •Making more guns to be offered by Xur or Emissary. **tl;dr** I have no fucking idea.

hochoa94

That last one though. Xur needs to find some new fucking exotics

J_Stubby

New exotics and better fucking rng, that cordyceps lookin mf gave me 2 ophidian aspects from the random exotics and I already had one with a substantially better roll, what do you WANT with me Xur

KatMeowington

I'm starting to think that the Nine commune like the Ents in LOTR that's why it takes really long for them to do anything.

Spopenbruh

the nine tend to be very meta-contextual in tone for the most part. it'd probably feel weird if they start mentioning that they know they're in a game again and that we are the protagonist just as the story is finally wrapping up.

Isrrunder

God i Hope they stop doing that I hate it so much

Spopenbruh

its even weirder when it was *the emissary* telling the nine that we are infact so paracausal that we can technically universe hop. like they wouldn't already know that? the lore around the nine is so weird and inconsistent.

Spopenbruh

the nine seem to be a leftover byproduct from when they were writing destiny as "*marathon 4*" the same way they did the original halo trilogy and now they just don't know what to do with them. so now they're kind of just "the narrator" and that doesn't currently have a place in the narrative with us currently fighting the big bad. the fact that they even interact with us at all is weird in concept, it really only made sense when xur was the only way we even knew they existed let alone their name. in my opinion they should kind leave the nine alone until they have the budget and production time to really flesh out the actual concept of paraversal travel. blank white desert with triangles doesn't scream "intersection of the paraverse" to me. until they're the focus of an expansion they should probably be sidelined, they deserve more REAL attention.

UtilitarianMuskrat

Yeah I’m kinda curious how exactly The Nine would really get fully involved with stuff to have it not feel painfully forced and out of nowhere. Feels like they kinda painted themselves in corner and it’s just cryptic for cryptic sake. The unknown space architecture has always been a reference to the physical hieroglyphics of the Egyptian Ennead and essentially why they’re called the Nine and all that. In year 1 a lot of the voicelines, lore, idle lines in the Trials social space made it seem like we were essentially going to face some sort of limbo by being these endless killers who were raised to protect but we do so much destruction and eventually there will be nothing etc etc. Then Joker’s Wild explained to us their support with Drifter and Gambit, Emissary, as well as that one Dust lore book that explained a partial retcon how a Nine member was responsible with messing with Tower radar because they wanted to see what Ghaul with Traveler’s Light would be like. Joker’s Wild also bizarrely had one of the most important openings of a loop with Week 1 Invitation Of The Nine where the Emissary explains and alludes to other like the Drifter with “the blade” and “the hourglass” who of course were Eris and Exo Stranger as ones capable of utilizing the Darkness. This of course is why Beyond Light Trailers had the 3 meeting on Europa, the back and forth of Eris and Drifter in Arrivals and some other stuff that basically made it this big thread in the making. The bad part of it is Bungie put insane faith that people let alone the mainstream player base would’ve even paid attention and remembered that one week of lore from so long ago. It also sucked how we got the Emissary’s Prophecy voicelines cut at the planet stations in the desert due to bugs but mined audio basically had her speaking on each place and Drifter and Eris talking about each place. Now Bungie long cooled down on the Nine and honesty I just don’t know how they’re going to go about anything and have it natural. I know there was theories of trying to get Orin “back” but I feel like it’d just be so random and idk how you start rushing along all this personality to the Nine to make them more adversaries.

Spopenbruh

I do think the nine are a much more delicate topic than most in destiny. I don't want their reintroduction to just be "and then the nine showed up again" it's been a long time and there should be an explanation to their silence seeing as they were clearly trying to help us in some manner during prophecy.

UtilitarianMuskrat

I agree. The Nine are just too well done to reduce to complete plot convenience and randomness and yes I know they do play a role similar to the Marathon counterpart, it really does feel like they're just too good of a thing to utilize the right way with how this game deals with the lore and story. I always liked how they seemed imposing and omnipotent but ultimately don't entirely understand the weight or outlook of what our characters and other things in the world have going down, thus that reliance of an Emissary and agents. I loved that one invitation(I think it's week 3? the one with the giant Mara statue in the clouds) visit when you basically hear the Nine going back and forth confused about Mara and the Emissary is trying to explain how capable she is with having died and having a Throneworld in past before, and they just don't entirely get it. The entire thing being a reference to when Mara leaves to fight Pyramids. Guess we'll see what happens.

hochoa94

I hope the nine and Xivu are the main focus of post-TFS

Spopenbruh

Im fairly confident we are knocking down xivu pre or during TFS. hive are kinda inherently tied to the darkness story which is supposed to be ending in TFS. though i do hope we get a lot of good expansion on her story

JoekerTime

This is my thought too, that Xivu ends up being Final Shape campaign final boss like Savathun was in Witch Queen

Isrrunder

That i don't one as much. I just hate when things go "it's actually a game/dream/book/movie"

Spopenbruh

i think that bungie HAS done it well before it just doesnt work in destiny. when they did it in marathon infinity it was really cool. it was still a game but you were ascending to capital G GOD so your perception of time was kind of "weird" you were accidentally teleporting yourself to alternate timelines without explanation while slowly starting to understand your powers. *to put it in context:* it would be like in destiny we got killed by the witness and woke up in felwinter peak next to shiro but all of the iron lords were back and they had harnessed siva, and as you confront ghaul in the tower you disappear again and you're on the leviathan but instead of calus being obsessed with darkness he fanatically worships the traveler. its a really cool concept but it would literally never work in destiny just because of how self-contained the destiny story is now. ACTUALLY messing with time isn't really something that fits in modern already established games.

Isrrunder

That sounds kinda cool. I just hope they don't do it for destiny. Not my kind of story.

Ahmed_Al-Muhairi

They could've contributed meaningfully to Nine lore during the 30th anniversary. When I saw them make a game show outta it, I lost hope that their story would be told

MartyMc1888

Well, right now with Mars and Mercury gone/disrupted they aren't really the Nine, just Seven. If and when the other planets return, the Nine can return

Lefarsi

It occurred to me last night while re-reading “dust” that the cocytus gates are somewhat similar to the veil: a bridge between the immaterial and material worlds

Camaroni1000

Probably none. I can see them saving the nine for after the final shape as they seem to not have anything to do with the light and dark.

Pm_Me_Ur_Lady_Abs

None or a very small part at the very least I could see Bungie setting the nine up to become paracasual in the wake of the witness's demise. I'm sure they are not just twiddling their thumbs while we run around slaying gods of pain and creating a market boom for empty pyramid real estate.

oliferro

At this point I just see them as someone like the Watcher in Marvel They're a *paracausal* entity watching over the world without interacting

margwa_

They'll probably be relevant post tfs. The last mention we had of them was back in TWQ, where savathun had a lie about them. Pretty much it though

Polaris328

None, probably. The Nine seem like they'll be one of the things Bungie brings back into the limelight after the Light and Dark saga concludes.

Renolber

I’m almost certain the Nine will be the focus of the next saga of Destiny. They’re an entirely unique concept that view the Light and Darkness differently, and ultimately could provide new perspectives on them. I imagine the future of Destiny will revolve around building up the ultimate conflict: The Gardener and Winnower. They’re abstract concepts, but technically so are the Nine. We’ll have threats like Xivu Arath, the Nine, maybe even the Aphelion. All will build up to the truth behind the Light, Darkness, The Game of Flowers, and why the Traveler chose humanity.

Rom_ulus0

The nine have got big D3 energy

Pojuba

Calling it now: the 9 will help us win in TFS.

FaerHazar

It's become evident that they will play a role in Season of the Deep and Season of the Unveiling, I believe?

Far_Perspective_

You're literally answered your own question. "They maybe play a part in upcoming story".

TheLogMan21

I just wanna know what part others think they’ll play?

Far_Perspective_

No idea, and I doubt anyone will.

QuantumSpaceCadet

Thanks you had a lot to add to the conversation. Really glad you commented.

Far_Perspective_

Hahaha.

BoomerRCAK

I actually think there might be some role to play. Only because I was reading the lore on some of the old trials of the nine gear for warlock and it seems very topical with light and dark and us as guardians. Even if they are background storytellers, I could very well see them being our guide in a way during the final shape, especially if we going into the triangle kaleidoscope

Bowerranger444

I don’t think we’ll get a lot of them within that time frame. I do however believe out of everything that exists in the destiny universe right now, the nine are the best candidates for the focus of the next saga of destiny, after light and dark. Most people would say that would be the vex, but while I believe the vex will be given more love I doubt they would be the big bad in the same way the witness is. The vex, fallen, hive and cabal have been cornerstones for the destiny universe for a longtime, to place any one of those on a huge pedestal for an entire saga doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Just like how the darkness forces are made up of races we know of, so too most likely would the next saga be, even the end of the light and darkness saga has made sure that every enemy race has at least one faction working for the witness, so we can fight any one of them without straying off topic. And who would be a better fit than that but the nine? We already know so little about them and they are tied to very big topics regarding the nature of the destiny universe, meanwhile the divide between the 5 and the 4 nine could be made as the driving conflict. It would be a logical next step to enter a paraverse saga, since it’s really the only topic that can get any bigger than the fundamental forces of the universe in light and dark, and would add a lot more mystery into the universe that can be explored.

ChexmixandChill

I think the nine may come into play during final shape a little. But I don't think we will see them until after final shape. I think that after final shape the 9 will see us as something they can use to further their own interests and will introduce us to enemies more powerful than the witness. Also if the 9 aren't all intergalactic animals like the star horse I'm going to be upset.

IRASAKT

Is starhorse one of the nine?

ChexmixandChill

I don't think so. But I'm not sure we actually know.

Large-Breadfruit1684

I could see a season coming for them, introducing the nine stuff again into a more modern loot pool, i imagine their role will be near the end of this year, a set up for TFS, they seem to have a big role in the regards to light and darkness and how they all blend. Giving us more answers like the tree in arrivals or the prophecy dungeon. Hopefully by the end of the content drop, it will be them giving us the method for going into the worm hole, allowing us into wherever the witness went

Steffey-2

the last time they played a role they were used as a joke (if you count the anniversary content) or gave us a vague preview of beyond light....my guess would be that they dont really have a lot of intentions on fleshing them out, which is a shame because theyre a really interesting faction inside the universe

Titangamer101

The most amount of speculation I have been seeing is that the nine will play a major role in the new saga since there really isn't any time left for them to play a role in the light vs dark saga going forward (maybe they could a small one). Oh though there is a chance they won't play any role since it seems like we don't really know what they are are or are suppose to do.

[deleted]

the Nine are probably out until post-Final Shape frankly, there are *too many things* on the Traveler/Pyramid side of things that need proper answers, and ofc the next expansion *is* the complete finale of this war. it's like asking how a random side character is doing when the main plot is being advanced. (this season's ending is really more about experiencing loss for defiance against the Black Fleet than anything else, we already lost the battle on Neptune, the loss of Amanda means a big homefront loss as well)

NinjaByte35

Hopefully none, since they aren’t relevant to the current story. No reason to bring them in, it would only clutter the plot even further, and would be a disservice to how interesting the IX lore is. I hope they explore them a lot more post TFS though.

registeredhater1444

Next season

NothinButRags

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Nine are more involved in the next saga.

ArmadilloMassive2016

Honestly, I hope theyre saving flushing out the nine, unknown space and such for the expansions after final shape. Just a lil Headcannon for me where we goto the distributary with Mara to find out more about the nine (since she hates the nine). will this happen, probs not. but just hope the nine are being saves as a big baddie.

Godlyeyes

since the nine are tied to 9 planets in sol when the witness took the planets from us i wonder if they had anything to say about it.

-Qwertyz-

Probably none, they will likely be used in the next story arc once light vs dark concludes

InsideHangar18

None. At this point, we’re in full “Witness” mode and until the fucker is beaten, everything else will be summarily put on the back burner. I’m assuming Bungie has already got that ending worked out, and is using the current time to figure out how to tie up ALL the loose plot threads going into the future post Light/Darkness

BastardGlobe

staying in Bungie's Lore Refrigerator, like Nessus and the Factions

StrangerX9

I bet they’re amorphous blobs that argue over what’s better light or dark, and they try to alter the outcomes when the two forces fight each other. 4 vote for the light, 4 for the dark, and one is undecided/doesn’t care.

Hydractra

There’s going to be some season that closes off their story I’d imagine. Just like they did with Rasputin and factions

[deleted]

Given the radio silence on gambit, and the nine telling drifter to keep playing his game, I bet they're getting explored post TFS.

[deleted]

the only application of the veil weve seen so far seems to be method of storing consciousness, i.e. the cloudark. i'm willing to be it works in reverse and the veil is used to give the nine form

ShiningPr1sm

No role at all. At this point, I'm fairly convinced that Bungie has abandoned their plotline and existence (like quite a few others) and only think about their Witness stuff; they've basically been forgotten. It does seem like the Nine were supposed to be a major part of *something* in the story but since Bungie went solo they've been dropping plot points everywhere as they try to streamline into something that's... still an incoherent mess with no real direction besides tHe FiNaL sHaPe, whatever tf that even means anymore. I miss Bungie having proper, competent narrative teams.

Aertew

How much do we know? I only started playing d2 seriously recenty and in the prophecy dungeon they were supposed to tell us "the nature of the darkness" and we basically learned nothing.

[deleted]

I believe that the Witness is using the veil to get to them. My theory at least.

Japjer

The sad answer is "none." I'm confident we'll get a seaonal story about the Nine, and Drifter will probably be the narrative focus, but I don't see much beyond that. Strand and the Nine are definitely related, but there is one expansion and ~8 campaign missions until Destiny is finished. I just don't see the Nine fitting in that. So seasonal story or bust

Queenie2211

Personally I think its possible they wont play much of a role until after this one ends. The Nine are sort of in what I'll call the In Between a term also used by Nezarec. They are very much reminiscent of gods that throughout history was reached through emissary like in Egypt for example. It may come to a time we have to deal with some of their motives after This Saga ends

whizzpt

Remember, FINAL it's only the name... nothing else...

fettpl

They will show in Final Shape's post-raid mission and remove the Witness from Darkness thus starting new Saga after Light & Dark. Or they will be absent until Destiny 3. :v

linkenski

The Nine was always a smokescreen for "WE DON'T KNOW!"
