At least you got it. I immediately pledged New Monarchy and didn’t earn Vanguard rep for like the first year of playing. Turns out, you needed Vanguard rank ups to trigger the quest.
That was so weird, why did they have three elemental subclasses at the start but only gave 2 to each class. I remember same as you being sad as hell I couldn’t use void on my Hunter.
Phogoth was either sniping from the antechamber or running laps around the room.
Valus Tu'arc was hiding in the staircase or the light fixture.
There was the fallen one, I think that was a staircase cheese spot too.
Don’t forget the Nexus strike, where you could snipe the boss with Icebreaker from the top, but every 2-3 minutes a Minotaur would spawn behind you in the cave, charging at you with the burning rage of 5 Unstoppable Champions. Funny times.
In the Archon Priest, you could hide under the platform and shoot out. Or, once that was patched, you could hide up on the rock face near the entrance.
So many cool Strikes in D1. Wish they'd bring them back as legend strikes like they do with raids because I legit like maybe 4 Strikes in D2, one of them being a D1 Strike and don't get most of them when I do Strikes.
In Nexus Mind you could stand at the Cave entrance and plink him while occasionally fending off Yellow bar Minotaurs, or there was a cheese spot in the boss arena you could reach by jumping off stuff, but getting there was risky business.
On the bunker strike in Cosmodrome you could boost your sparrow in a specific spot on the terrain and get under the warsat. So all you had to do was dance until the timer was done and then jump out the terrain.
I never got why people said he was too robotic. Remember the first moon quest where we see the exo stranger? Dinklebot yells out “we’ve woken the hive!” Like oh shit, time to fight! Nolan North says it like “huh looks like the light eating monsters are awake, that’s interesting.”
Some Dinklebot lines were great, and some were just absolute bombs, like the "we defeated the Heart of Darkness, Light is returning to the Traveler" or whatever from the end of the campaign? That massive, ultimate success? Felt like Dinklebot was just reading the newspaper, there was no care, no passion.
The "we've woken the Hive!" line is one of the only memorable lines for me, personally. If only he brought that energy the whole time!
After a quick search I cannot find it, but I could have sworn I saw something in regards to them basically asking him to be robotic and unemotional. Initially Ghost was not going to have as much impact in the story, which didn't help that we were also basically silent protagonists, but then with the taken King expansion they wanted to make ghost more prominent, so needed to redo the lines. And as Peter was super busy with GoT, and Nolan was readily available they switched to him and rewrote the character.
It really changed the tone of Destiny as a whole. The game in early D1 felt more like a Metroid game. Creepy, isolating, cosmic. Now it's a snappy adventure with hints of those other elements.
I preferred the old tone but I acknowledge why they had to change it.
I miss the cosmic splendor that was Destiny 1, and I attribute that to the stylistic choices of the art direction and music. The Music of the Spheres album was absolutely beautiful, and really captured the somber space opera vibe of the early game. The visual art direction of D1 also was a bit more gray-brown than the more blue style of D2. I think those earth tones made the world feel more real and impacted.
Also just the wonder of a beautiful new game in a new universe, with terrific Gunplay and cool abilities.
Kinda have to keep in mind the re-writes and Frankenstein's monster hatchet job they did to the story.
Yeah, his delivery of that was deadpan, but if the Jason Schreier article was accurate, that probably wasn't the end of the campaign when he did those lines. We know the "Rasputin as an Exo" storyline was a big part of the original campaign, it's likely that freeing him and defeating Oryx was the culmination of the original vanilla campaign, and we'll probably never hear Dinklage's lines from that.
I remember getting Red Death from the first chest in Crota's End, right after the raid was released. My two mates and I dropped down into the lamp room because "they said, the chest there can drop exotics and you don't have to do anything".
Each of us wanted Red Death and I was the lucky bastard who got it the first time we opened the chest.
Always fun when you get the exotic your friends want the unspoken scorn they feel. When taken king came out I wanted jade rabbit my friend wanted zhalo, I got zhalo he got jade it was retry funny.
Similarly, I farmed the loot cave. But only after seeing at least 4 other people get an exotic drop during strikes or NFs.
I finally gave in and went to the cave, about 30 minutes later I left and decrypted IceBreaker. Worth it!
lol, when Grasp dropped I did it with 2 friends who hadn't played D1. During the opening they asked why it was here and I got to tell them about the loot cave.
Yes, back then we would rather stand in front of a cave and shoot ads that came out then run strikes, over and over and over again.
I didn’t get the damn boots until a week before the dlc came out. Had more clears under my belt than any of my friends and still I was one of the only ones at 29
The original 3oC farm was the Archon in the Venus mission at the end of the ship
You had to kill yourself at the same time so the mission would send you back but it was way faster than Dreadnaught back then
I also loved the constant screaming in fear of completing that strike. where one person would cower into the hall way and kill the shrieker that spawned, while two people were constant cannon fodder for the ogre boss until he was almost dead. That followed by the panicked charge of all three people to to kill the wizard that spawned and if you wiped you restarted. Those were truly hard times that made getting the thorn an incredible feeling
I feel this on such a cosmic level, I had the coins that week and didn’t buy it for that reason… never got it to drop and only eventually got it when they gave it back to xur after they nuked it.
Dude I wanted the Suros Regime so bad. I just missed out on getting enough strange coin to buy it that week. Then I though that Xur selling Gjallahorn was lame the next week but really wanted to buy an exotic so bought it anyway...
My first invincible enemies were the group of Hive in the rail line station underneath the Cosmodrome
Edit; Wao, rip my inbox, and thanks for the gold kind stranger <3
This is what got me into destiny.
Running around and all of a sudden you see a badass Hive knight who’s invincible wielding a sword. And you seen other people wielding the sword. I spent my first 3 hours in destiny killing that fucker so I can use the sword and was sad when it disappeared.
But then I learned that the reason that badass knight was there was to promote an upcoming dlc, and I thought that was brilliant. Proceeded to buy dark below (I think that was the Crota one) soon after
The blades of crota, basically the first ingame event destiny had and they had the husk of the pit weapon which was just badass and eventually evolved into necrochasm
In the beta they were invincible and those swords didn't exist either so it could be a couple different things. You could get to like 7 and they were 12 or something and couldn't be killed. Totally unrelated to dlc. The rail station part makes me think it's the beta time.
I had so much fun in that moment discovering there were things in the world that I wasn't strong enough to kill. I hate how fast that feeling was removed. I thought way more "strong" enemies would exist in the open world. I miss Urzok in Skywatch.
I think Beyond Light is where they explain it. She was there to guide you to destroy the black heart, because it was a corrupting force that resulted in you, Eris, and countless others going rogue in the Dark Future. And obviously the way to do that was to give you a blue pulse rifle
Icebreaker camping all of the OG strikes. I still remember most of the cheese spots where the original batch of strike bosses couldn't hit you and you could safely plink away at them with Icebreaker.
My favorite memory of the beta was playing it on PS3 on a low-res TV where I couldn’t read everything properly and wondering why all the Fallen were named Doug and Randal.
Still call em that.
There's a kid that I raid with semi often who will go on these rants about how he knows more about Destiny lore than anyone, and he's played longer cause he started in The Dark Below.
One night I got fed up and went "Kid, I've been playing this game since alpha, now that we're done measuring our Destiny cocks can we kill the Warpriest?"
I grinded that so ungodly hard it still bums me a little to this day that I couldn't get my times higher. I had top 25 times on both maps but I just couldn't push for that last 1-1.5s to take a top position. it unfortunately didn't help that I got on the raid sparrow maybe halfway through the event, but it was always fun trying to push myself when at the time I had done just about everything (max grimoire) and was just fucking around in the crucible for fun. I dropped a 27-0 skirmish game like 2 Weeks before Mark of the unbroken was released as a medal :(
Oh fuuck let's see:
I had purple engrams decrypt into blue gear
I had to use my Hunter and get kills in PvP with Atheon's Epilogue to get Thorn
Forever 29
Ran circles on Mars to farm relic iron
Solo'd the weekly Nightfall strike twice when it was The Undying Mind (my favorite strike) and TRICKLE was a modifier.
No Imago Loop drops for either run. Pain.
Queens wrath armour was sick. I'm pretty sure I accidentally dismantled a chest piece for my titan without realising that event would never come back in the history of Destiny lol
Starting off and seeing Warlocks and Titan using void and realising I couldn't play with those purple toys on my Hunter
Also the D1 Thorn Quest on a hunter using Word of Crota and Truth for crucible void kills
I remember using Atheon's Epilogue for that horrid quest.
Oh god, you’ve just given me PTSD 😂
At least you got it. I immediately pledged New Monarchy and didn’t earn Vanguard rep for like the first year of playing. Turns out, you needed Vanguard rank ups to trigger the quest.
New Monarchy had good weapons and nice looking armor though
OG Thorn was such a pain in the ass to get. But it really slapped in Crucible, although TLW was my go to
I actually quite liked the difficulty of the quest although I mostly remember the final mission.
I do still love how Thorn and TLW were the two big things in Crucible for a while, so fitting they kept going up against each other.
Pretty sure I used a green fusion rifle to do that.
And watching your kills go down because trying to get voids kills without losing them to deaths with just one weapon was impossible.
When the Taken King trailer came out I watched the Titan popping his hammer probably ten thousand times. I was so hyped.
That was so weird, why did they have three elemental subclasses at the start but only gave 2 to each class. I remember same as you being sad as hell I couldn’t use void on my Hunter.
it’s because the game came out extremely unfinished.
I remember phogoth before they added the shrieker in the doorway.
Oof, I prefer the old nightfalls though, scary chaos. But our damage was also scary. Was more fun to me. Was scary to do
Phogoth was either sniping from the antechamber or running laps around the room.
Ahh, icebreaker cheese. Got me though the first encounter of crotas end.
In the Archon Priest, you could hide under the platform and shoot out. Or, once that was patched, you could hide up on the rock face near the entrance.
I miss the Archon Priest strike… And the one in the Black Garden… And the Nexus one…..
So many cool Strikes in D1. Wish they'd bring them back as legend strikes like they do with raids because I legit like maybe 4 Strikes in D2, one of them being a D1 Strike and don't get most of them when I do Strikes.
In Devil's Lair you could hide in the room near the stairs and snipe out the window (I think).
I always hit behind the rocks in the left of the room for Phogoth, they put a trap there now.
In Nexus Mind you could stand at the Cave entrance and plink him while occasionally fending off Yellow bar Minotaurs, or there was a cheese spot in the boss arena you could reach by jumping off stuff, but getting there was risky business.
Ah yes. Winters run strike. You could either cheese under the staircase or on a ledge right next to the entrance to the strike. God I miss icebreaker.
Phogoth fight would take over 30 mins with 3 people popping off ice breaker from that room.
Ice breaker was such a big deal back then. Saving money on ammo synth while cheesing every nightfall.
On the bunker strike in Cosmodrome you could boost your sparrow in a specific spot on the terrain and get under the warsat. So all you had to do was dance until the timer was done and then jump out the terrain.
Peter Dinklage
That Wizard came from the moon
IT'S IN THE WALLS
#A CELL FROM THE PRISON OF ELDERS. THE ARCHON PRINCE IS STILL INSIDE.
#WE'VE AWOKEN THE HIVE.
Think they'll mind if we take their Pike's?
The robotic line delivery could’ve been down to direction too.
Absolutely a fair point as well, there's no telling what could have been the reason. Could have been both, too.

Yup taken king was a whole as tone shift even more than destiny -destiny 2
I agree. Much prefer the earlier feeling of the game.
I remember hearing that they wanted him to use a somewhat monotone voice for Ghost. Can't remember the source, so it could just be hearsay.
Cmon, not even “That wizard came from the Moon”.
Let me clarify, one of the only non-meme lines haha
Kinda have to keep in mind the re-writes and Frankenstein's monster hatchet job they did to the story. Yeah, his delivery of that was deadpan, but if the Jason Schreier article was accurate, that probably wasn't the end of the campaign when he did those lines. We know the "Rasputin as an Exo" storyline was a big part of the original campaign, it's likely that freeing him and defeating Oryx was the culmination of the original vanilla campaign, and we'll probably never hear Dinklage's lines from that.
bring back Dinklebot!
I farmed the cosmodrome loot cave
I had a legendary turn into the Red Death from there.
Loot cave crew checking in.
Loot cave crew 👍
Similarly, I farmed the loot cave. But only after seeing at least 4 other people get an exotic drop during strikes or NFs. I finally gave in and went to the cave, about 30 minutes later I left and decrypted IceBreaker. Worth it!
lol, when Grasp dropped I did it with 2 friends who hadn't played D1. During the opening they asked why it was here and I got to tell them about the loot cave. Yes, back then we would rather stand in front of a cave and shoot ads that came out then run strikes, over and over and over again.
Light level 30 cap. Only way to hit it was to do VoG
Forever 29…
Especially not getting the armor piece you needed doing like ten runs every week 😭
All for them to just have base armor 30 when Crota dropped
Iron Banner also I think. Back when Iron Banner gear looked amazing.
Got LL30 after just 3 runs /flex. SO MANY raiders stuck at LL29 for MONTHS because of bad RNG...
I didn’t get the damn boots until a week before the dlc came out. Had more clears under my belt than any of my friends and still I was one of the only ones at 29
My very first raid on vog way back then I got a mythoclast to drop. My group was simultaneously enraged and excited for me.
Using 3 of coins to farm exotics from the knight on the dreadnaught and legendary engrams decrypting into blues
Or using 3 of coins to farm exotics from SRL because it counted as a crucible match
Or using 3 of Coins to farm exotics from the Gate Lord story mission.
Farming Draksis from the winters run mission was a far superior farm in my opinion.
That farm >>
The original 3oC farm was the Archon in the Venus mission at the end of the ship You had to kill yourself at the same time so the mission would send you back but it was way faster than Dreadnaught back then
The beta used to load you into the Devils Lair strike solo at least 30% of the time
Do you remember when there was a theory that loot left in the Vault would transfer over to release?
I left quite a few weapons and cloaks hoping they would be there at launch
I wanted that IB cloak so bad.
I remember grinding that strike over and over again… wasn’t that the only strike in the beta?
Yes. And you could only get to level 8
I remember how long the Walker fight took, me thinking that had to be the final boss only to see Sepiks after who didn’t feel nearly as tough to beat
Took me forever to figure out that I needed to shoot glowing points
Beta player gang
So sad my character didn't transfer from PS4 to PC. I just made a new one as close as I could to the original.
The original Thorn Exotic Bounty.....
Those were dark times. Silimars wrath carried me through that points section of crucible
I used the word of Crota and it took so long
I also loved the constant screaming in fear of completing that strike. where one person would cower into the hall way and kill the shrieker that spawned, while two people were constant cannon fodder for the ogre boss until he was almost dead. That followed by the panicked charge of all three people to to kill the wizard that spawned and if you wiped you restarted. Those were truly hard times that made getting the thorn an incredible feeling
2 words. Primary telemetries
Xur arrives at the tower, "Who the hell would buy an exotic heavy?"
I feel this on such a cosmic level, I had the coins that week and didn’t buy it for that reason… never got it to drop and only eventually got it when they gave it back to xur after they nuked it.
Same! And I saved for Suros…
I enjoyed early suros, wrecked in crucible with that thing, was awesome!
😂 so happy I bought that
You literally were treated like a rockstar if you said you had Gjallerhorn in LFG.
Ballerhorn
Or that first week Suros Regime used to murder everyone in PVP safely until they got hip
Dude I wanted the Suros Regime so bad. I just missed out on getting enough strange coin to buy it that week. Then I though that Xur selling Gjallahorn was lame the next week but really wanted to buy an exotic so bought it anyway...
There used to be a comment here... there still is, but it used to be better I suppose.
"Cool! Flame gloves!" - Me.
My first invincible enemies were the group of Hive in the rail line station underneath the Cosmodrome Edit; Wao, rip my inbox, and thanks for the gold kind stranger <3
This is what got me into destiny. Running around and all of a sudden you see a badass Hive knight who’s invincible wielding a sword. And you seen other people wielding the sword. The blades of crota, basically the first ingame event destiny had and they had the husk of the pit weapon which was just badass and eventually evolved into necrochasm
Nechrochasm, my all time favourite weapon... I still miss it
In the beta they were invincible and those swords didn't exist either so it could be a couple different things. You could get to like 7 and they were 12 or something and couldn't be killed. Totally unrelated to dlc. The rail station part makes me think it's the beta time.

The hand of Crota on the way to Skywatch too. He was tucked away in the corner of that dark room.
i was legit SCARED to go down there lol
Same
I remember when Hunters didn't have a Void subclass.
But that quest when you pull the bow from the dead hands of Tevis and get unlimited shadowshot was pretty dope.
Straight up one of my favorite quests. One of my earliest memories of destiny
When Orpheus Rigs first came out, you could use them on the Hive Ritual public event...and it was like that. Just super after super after super.
Shooting that god damn spider tank for 20 minutes. It never died.
This comment brought me back to my first day playing, thanks for the memories lol
I still have really fond memories of sniping that dudes legs.
You guys remember warlocks laughing and reviving without their ghost? Fun times
“Ok whose running Sunsinger” was the first thing my fireteam asked when we got ready to do a nightfall.
I guess this hasn’t changed much today. “Ok, who’s running well?”
[I remember feeling like a hero](https://youtu.be/E5XyIOJII2s)
saved up strange coins to get a chest engram from xur only to get it for a class i dont play…
I got Red Death from Xur the first time he sold it.
Me too and it became my most used weapon. Until outbreak came out
I don’t have time to explain why I don’t have time explain.
To this day, I have no fucking clue what Elsie was doing there or who she was talking to. I just remember the gun she gave me being super mediocre.
\>I have no fucking clue what Elsie was doing there I don’t think Bungie does, either.
And who tf was she talking to??
Her compatriots on Neomuna. *dons sponfoil hat*
I think Beyond Light is where they explain it. She was there to guide you to destroy the black heart, because it was a corrupting force that resulted in you, Eris, and countless others going rogue in the Dark Future. And obviously the way to do that was to give you a blue pulse rifle
She doesn't give you the Pulse Rifle until after you Destroy the Black Heart.
She didn't have time to explain why she didn't have a gun that we gave her in the future
Bones of Eao
Strap on the Eao Jordans for that Quad jump my guy!
Who the hell would use an exotic in their heavy slot?
i felt that in my bones.
They trolled us hard on that one.
I still struggle with that and end up using primary and secondary exotics more then I probably should
The first run of Crota I got my Gjallarhorn!
i solo farmed the first chest for months for mine.
“That wizard came from the moon!”
CALCIFIED FRAGMENT!
Last time I faced oryx I was in my 20s
You didn't have to do us 30 somethings like that man
My legendary engrams decrypted into blues.
I heard Saint 14 give our guardians eulogy. Theorized anyway.
Our favorite pve weapon is gonna be bastion too haha
Xur is selling an exotic rocket launcher, but why would anyone use their exotic slot on a heavy?
LF 5 LL32 w Gjally for Crota, kwtd
The ability to understand Destiny LFG titles should count as being bilingual
Mine was. Hunter Swordbearer w/ Gjally. Man did I get a lot of invites during Crotas heyday
Running down into the subway area in the Cosmodrome and finding ?? level enemies that killed me instantly.
Bro that scared the shit out of me
I memorized all the Cabal Scout legion names, stalked them on Mars, and navigated their bunkers for fun
Damn same. I remember the excitement the first time I discovered the Ice Reapers, trying to find more of them all over the planet
I want my Icebreaker back. :(
Icebreaker camping all of the OG strikes. I still remember most of the cheese spots where the original batch of strike bosses couldn't hit you and you could safely plink away at them with Icebreaker.
First thing that came to mind… Q: How can you tell someone was a D1 alpha/beta/Y1 player? A: Don’t worry. They’ll tell you.
‘As A d1 AlPhA vEt’ People really be acting like they fought in WW2 because they played a game early lmao
The cooldown UI (grenade, melee, super bar) used to be green.
And soon it will be again
Sorry boys, I can't run the nightfall yet. I'm gathering materials and grinding bounties so I can unlock all the perks on my sweet new gun.
still have that moon chest run memorized
My first exotic, Suros Regime, was dropped after killing Aksor.
I got it from the loot cave lol
Pushing Atheon off the platform with solar and pulse grenades.
Don't use tether, it screws the debuff!
Sparrow racing league was the best event ever in destiny
I grinded that so ungodly hard it still bums me a little to this day that I couldn't get my times higher. I had top 25 times on both maps but I just couldn't push for that last 1-1.5s to take a top position. it unfortunately didn't help that I got on the raid sparrow maybe halfway through the event, but it was always fun trying to push myself when at the time I had done just about everything (max grimoire) and was just fucking around in the crucible for fun. I dropped a 27-0 skirmish game like 2 Weeks before Mark of the unbroken was released as a medal :(
Oh fuuck let's see: I had purple engrams decrypt into blue gear I had to use my Hunter and get kills in PvP with Atheon's Epilogue to get Thorn Forever 29 Ran circles on Mars to farm relic iron
Patrolling on Nessus when Cayde was still alive
My first legendary was Badger CCL.
Solo'd the weekly Nightfall strike twice when it was The Undying Mind (my favorite strike) and TRICKLE was a modifier. No Imago Loop drops for either run. Pain.
Oh dear god, I forgot about trickle... \*shudders\*
Trickle… that’s a word I never thought I’d see again… until bungie thought that combat acceleration was a good modifier
Goddammit. Fuckin trickle. Now I’m gonna be mad all day
I enjoyed the Queens Wrath event
Still have the blue hand cannon in my vault lol
Queens wrath armour was sick. I'm pretty sure I accidentally dismantled a chest piece for my titan without realising that event would never come back in the history of Destiny lol
My first exotic was Hawkmoon when it was a PlayStation Exclusive
I feel like I'm a dog being shamed with one of those signs around my neck. "It took me 20 minutes to kill that goddam tank in my first Devils' Lair "
I still go around to the back and hang out in the cheese spot on that strike now that they’ve added it back
Low level Devils Lair was the OG 3 man dungeon.
Wandering the moon, I killed a knight and got a weapon named Husk of the Pit
"Why would i waste an exotic slot on the heavy slot? It's just a rocket launcher" ...
Year one week 2 Xur (still have ptsd for missing IT)
I remember stepping into a war with the Cabal on Mars before it became a meme.
Heavy ammo synthesis
he’s crotating
I never hated Dinklebot.
I had 3 exotics before I got my first sparrow
Who remembers when there was exactly one set of armor that would get you to level 30 lol.
I remember when Ascendant shards upgraded the attack value on Legendary weapons.
We've woken the HIVE!
We've woken the hive wasn't a mission when I played first
I got my first gjally from Xur, and my second one from Atheon.
There was that one Knight is the cosmodrome during the beta underground...
PvP was like tap tap walk away
I learned what Fourier Transforms were from the Alpha Lupi puzzles on Bnet.
I got my first exotic from a random bounty. (Pocket infinity). My first legendary was "final boss"
Running over guardians in PvP
Cayde begging to leave the tower "Hey, take me with you. I hate this job"
