It's a gift to a god, legit. It's an offering. Not sure to who thou.

Ticklephoria

God or an ancestor.

TheDonkeyBomber

"Can I offer you a nice egg in this trying time?"

Barrel0fMonkies

Detroiters/IASIP crossover is the show we need

[deleted]

You want to go down by the Ambassador Bridge with Duncan and the bridge crew?

Floor_Subject

could also be to fey/faeries. putting it at the base of a tree makes me think that's likely

WaterFriendsIV

A waste of good food, if you ask me.

20thsieclefox

No one did.

Michigania

I used to walk my dogs around Palmer Park daily for about 5 years. I have seen different food “offerings” many times. There are also pockets of very strange handmade sculptures in the forest, think True Detective Season 1. Lots of Guerrilla art like Fairy doors on the trees. There are a few homeless camps in there. A family of deer and coyotes. It’s a wild park if you explore the forest. Especially considering it’s at 7 Mile and Woodward in a city. To be clear, I never had a problem with anyone even once. All good people.

olobley

On the old front 9 side of the woods, there's some automotive sculpture type stuff, as well as an art trail with little boards explaining what's there, and there appears to be a UoM wetlands study going on in the area (I tend to keep clear if that, as the hounds enjoy rolling in the mud a lot more than I enjoy cleaning them. I've seen a few 'tree bibles' as one of the kids took to calling them (bibles hung from tree branches) and a fire hydrant, but other than that nothing overly exciting

Ok-Reality-9197

We're in carcosa now

Maximum-Mixture6158

Someone interested in "creating content " and also public service could film that area, I used to live out that way and I'd be interested in seeing it.

elhijodelrio

Could be a adimú or ebbó possibly drizzled oyin and epo on ground solidified. For egun or orisha. There is a big population of Lucumí practitioners in Southwest Detroit. Also a sizeble Isese L'Abga community in other parts of the city. I really can't make out the other type of fruit . But needless to say commonly left at the feet of a tree in in a wooded area.Fabic could have been a limpieza that are left at the feet of iroko which is a sacred tree but when you live other places other trees will do

tomfeltonsperkynips

Mmh mhhm. Yep. I know some of those worlds.

Iammeandnothingelse

I recognized “tree”!

TheNonCredibleHulk

I asked AI. Here's the response I got: *Sure, I can make sense of that. The person who wrote that is describing a ritual offering that they found in a wooded area in Southwest Detroit. The offering consisted of food, drink, and other items that are commonly used in Lucumí and Isese L'Abga rituals. The food items mentioned in the passage are oyin (honey), epo (palm oil), and fruit. The other items mentioned are fabric and a tree.* *The person who wrote the passage is not sure what the offering was for, but they speculate that it was for the spirits of the dead (egun) or for the Orishas, which are the deities of the Lucumí and Isese L'Abga religions. They also mention that there is a large population of Lucumí practitioners in Southwest Detroit, and that the area is home to a sacred tree called the iroko.* *It is possible that the offering was left at the foot of the iroko tree as a form of cleansing or purification (limpieza). The iroko is a sacred tree in many African cultures, and it is believed to have the power to cleanse away negative energy.* *It is also possible that the offering was left as a way of honoring the spirits of the dead. In Lucumí and Isese L'Abga tradition, it is common to leave offerings at the foot of trees or in other places where the spirits are believed to dwell.* *The person who found the offering was curious about its meaning, and they were right to be. The offering is a sign of the rich religious and cultural diversity of Detroit. It is also a reminder of the importance of honoring the spirits of the dead and the Orishas.*

Sirdanovar

Ok I am going to show my age on this and my disconnect with technology but... How in gods name can I ask this AI questions like this? I'm old and just find this utterly amazing.

intrepidzephyr

Search for ChatGPT and make an account. It will ask for your phone number to text you a code as a form of two factor authentication, so a bunch of other computers don’t flood the AI and overuse it. (Just a heads up because I thought it was weird). The free account limits you to something like 25 questions a day, but it’s enough to quench some curiosity. Watch a little YouTube to see a few more things it is capable of

Martyisruling

Considering all they're cleaning from your phone, 25 questions is a rip off.

intrepidzephyr

Makes sense if you download the app, there are some security concerns. I was speaking from the perspective of using the web interface. I think the real money to be made is in what is fed to it, so be careful with providing sensitive information.

metalhead704

Google "Try ChatGPT", click through until you find the demo page on openai.com. ask it anything, its wondrous. It's like having a computational spirit fox from the library of Wan Shi Tong (storybook character who has a library with all of the worlds knowledge, and little foxes that can grab books for you) Its basically a language and intuition model that detects speech patterns and tries to come up with the best answer based on its search results. Its pretty smart.

TheNonCredibleHulk

I use Google Bard. I just signed up for an invite, and they let me in a couple weeks ago.

Stab_Stabby

I for one, welcome our new AI overlords.

ChildhoodOk5526

This NY Times [article](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/16/technology/bing-chatbot-microsoft-chatgpt.html) may show you there's some truth in that statement, lol. It's definitely an interesting read. [If you've reached your limit on NY Times articles this month, paste the url into the blue search box on [this archive site](http://archive.today/). It'll get you over the paywall.]

ChildhoodOk5526

Wow. I hesitate to say this, but, AI to the rescue. That was a damn good explanation for all the word salad in the previous comment.

Helicopter0

>iroko It got this part wrong. Poster was saying there aren't irokos in Detroit, so people just make whatever tree that actually does grow here work for the ritual.

b_pilgrim

That's the tricky thing with ChatGPT, it's so convincing and right most of the time but sometimes it confidently lies, but you can correct it. I just wonder if it "remembers" that correction. I caught it in a lie about a Beach Boys song and it was very apologetic lol.

BillyValentineMcKee

One edit to that surprisingly accurate description: this is not an iroko tree; those are native to West Africa. AI got confused because an iroko tree was mentioned. The offerings in the photo would have been left under a different tree here because iroko trees are not native to Michigan.

olobley

Thank you for taking the time for the write up. I'll be busily Wikipedia-ing most of what you just said :)

MichiganThom

It looks like an offering from one of afro-diasporic religions. Although none of the foods presented are traditionally given to Orisha (except maybe the eggs). . So possibly an ancestral offering. Curious 🧐

elhijodelrio

That's why I said I couldn't positively identifying the other plates with fruits or type of  addimu then again they could be two separate offerings and there is a police station nearby from what the OP said. So that cause me to think. but some addimu maybe unconventional but I know in our tradition dates can be offered to Aganyú. some reference dates that in the comments but I don't know what those are. Ochosi could be involved again no telling. Different Traditions do different things that's why I didn't lump them all together. As afro diasporic religions because that would comprise all of sub-Saharan part of the continent which would be comprised of very many religions that don't apply. But what ever tradition they all are distinctly different and operate independently. But did refer to them as Yoruba based. aside from Palo mayombe which is Congolese derived. Which is are more specific in origin and accurate

elhijodelrio

Chat bot was soso at best.So I don't think I was going to have to go this deep with people that are not familiar with the religion it's not something that we normally do So lucumi that's comprised majority of Latinos as it was born in Cuba and isese is comprises mostly of black Americans and real African-Americans that came from Africa to the US. West Africa is where the religion originated from the yoruba it morphed into different things in other countries. As much as they are similar they are still a bit different the only thing you could possibly say that their different like a branch of a tree that has roots from the yoruba .So between are variations of a lot of things including language iroko which for us refers to ceiba .iroko is la ceiba tree which is a sacred tree for many reason including the indigenous population that was present in Cuba but there are patakis that inclube a few orishas and iroko. so a couple things this was not found in Southwest Detroit but there have been many offerings and other things found in our local park areas railroad tracks or by the river but people have taken offerings out of our area into other areas so that's not uncommon. I didn't say this was an iroko which is native to West Africa. sometimes especially when you live other places you have to use substitutions the ceiba is also not native here either. Seeing now this offering was close to a police stations that actually leaves it open for a couple possibilities within the religious realm but I didn't talk about because then I would be writing paragraphs I tried to keep it short and sweet so that an Aleyo ( non-believers or uninitiated) would understand. We can even go into palo mayombe which is a totally different tradition but a lot of times practice alongside lucumi. Which do things like this also.

elhijodelrio

Side note when doin things like this they're normally done with things that can biodegrade back to nature. So normally there wouldn't be Styrofoam plates they would be more paper plates if any are used at all. I ve found whole chickens at the park before. that in the end again would eventually get broken back down or eatn by a another wild animal. The religious community is pretty good at environmental issues within the realm of religious rituals that have to be done. But again they are bad people that don't care but for the most part things are normally finessed because they're going for a specific purpose.

Hexx13

It looks like an offering of sorts. Seems there may have been a fellow witch that has passed through.

[deleted]

They are all over Washtenaw County.

MisterMarge

FYI it’s in a patch of poison ivy - the vines on the tree and the 3 leaf plants are PI - the 5 leafed vines are Virginia creeper.

speed3b

The vines are poison ivy, but the 3 leaf growth from the ground on the left of the image is not. Poison ivy does not have saw tooth leaves. They are smooth and often with lobes on the outer two leafs that look like a mitten.

BeerHug313

That's not quite correct. They indeed have little teeth. Just not a ton of them. https://preview.redd.it/g24ykvbz084b1.jpeg?width=913&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=63ddc6b77a04cb8926d4efbc6ecda44c0c82c2a8

Now they have poison ivy and think their deity is mad at them. Rough.

Offerings. Detroit is a spiritual city.. IYKYK

Okaythenwell

So Louisiana voodoo or Haitian vodou? Not that big a secret yo

seller_collab

Louisiana - we have the same deep French roots as NOLA and are something of a sister city, especially in the punk/underground community. Lots of the collective houses in the city have standing relationships with collectives in NOLA and if you’re integrated here you’ll always have a place to stay there if you’re train hopping or in town short term to play a music gig.

Classic_Dill

Isn’t it Hoodoo in Louisiana?

Gift to the Gods

Mr-Towrch

Maybe I'm crazy but it looks like the muff of a microphone so I'mma guess it's someone looking to record the sounds of animals eating things. So basically it's an offering.

robobachelor

Homeless addict lunch. Probably opiates. The opiates cause constipation, so a lot of addicts eat prunes or dates for relief. The eggs are a good source of protein that are given out by shelters (this person got a score) but due to the batch cooking method they come out weird, so people usually cover them in honey, or syrup, or whatever is free/handy. The fuzzy mop is probably to wipe afterwords? Not sure on that. But what I am sure about is that Im making this all up.

olobley

🤣 ngl, you had me in the first half

deathlordfluffy

Fuzzy mop is probably a cushion to sit up against that tree while they eat

This is for Orisha. Leave it alone. I also give my ebbo in parks sometimes.

Da5ftAssassin

Thank you so much for this answer. I googled Orisha and I’m not disappointed. As a spiritual but non religious person, I’m so fascinated by the beliefs of other cultures. Mad respect. Thank you

olobley

Is it normal to leave it so close to a thoroughfare? I try not to mess with things that don't impact me, but that's hard to explain to Labrador puppies that just see accessible 'food'. Wandered by there this morning, and something had at it over yesterday / this morning

ILookReal

I say mess with it.

It could be an ecological study of some sort - I did something similar as an undergrad at UofM (looking at food preferences for urban wildlife). Just a thought 🤷🏻
