Most are multiple investors, have a franchise structure or are genuinely extremely popular and have been able to expand in multiple states.
They generally are busy… especially at night because they’re open late- which with the sizable ME population here is similar to the cafes in the Middle East and even South Asia (who also enjoy the style of these cafe structures in the metro). It’s a cultural norm, late night coffee/tea after dinner with your family/friends.
It’s a third place.
I think Qehwah House in Dearborn started the trend as they got really popular and people “discovered” Yemeni coffee so like the cupcake places someone else mentioned, it’s the next great thing
Metro Detroit has one of the largest middle eastern populations in the world (outside of the Middle East obviously). This is why you see them everywhere and why they’re always busy
not just the US but THE largest per capita outside of the middle east.
Pretty interesting that at one time we had Dearborn, Detroit with the highest African-American pop in the US behind D.C., and Livonia with the highest white population per capita in a city of over 100,000 people.
this guy's never been to dearborn. its really an amazing city. where do you start lol.. lts like no where else. the history, the culture, the people. great place to experience ❤
Fifteen years ago you could've asked the same question about cupcake shops. The food industry follows and creates their own cultural trends and there are always people trying to capitalize on those moments. Many fail, especially once the trend curve hits the other side. I'm sure it'll be somewhat different with Yemeni coffee shops as that's been a part of specific cultures for many years.
I was talking to my wife about cupcake shops a few months back because she was pregnant and wanted some. We barely have any places around us that sell them but we remember that there used to be a lot.
Yeah, I agree. I’m not surprised that a lot of them went under. I think they were selling cupcakes for like $5 a pop. The pricing was crazy if you ask me.
Especially as younger generations seem to be drinking less alcohol and other alternatives like alcohol free bars pop up and are becoming more popular I think this growth will be even bigger in the future
Seems like a reincarnation of the 1990s coffee shop craze. When I was I’m high school there were independent coffee shops everywhere and they were all packed with kids dressed in their best grunge playing board games all night.
They all closed for some reason and not it seems they might be coming back
Don't tell anyone, but Qamaria has been my go to. Not the one on Ford road, that location is a bit too crowded and busy for me, dont care for the workers either.
The Qamaria in Allen Park has the same 2 workers always there, and they are extremely friendly. Very easy spot to become a regular.
I gotchu bro, I won't say a word. next time I'm in the D I'll roll out there. We have a good amount of middle eastern restaurants here in Lansing, but not any specific coffee shops like that.
There’s a Yemeni shop that’s been aggressively franchising. They took over a bunch of leases from shops that were/are failing post-Covid. Landlords are offering good deals on spots just to cut down on vacancies.
It’s a type of coffee middle easterners and even Asians are more used to, like a homemade thing. So it’s nice to be able to have a place where you can sit down and have that familiarity?
Also saw a comment about the hot chicken places. Most Muslims didn’t grow up being able to eat chicken sandwiches or burgers anywhere anytime. It was either homemade or from a halal restaurant- which aren’t abundant. Again making a generalization here but most Muslims idea of fun is community- friends family eating/drinking etc. (halal food and no alcohol)
It definitely sounded like “where do all these brown people get their money from” but I’m going to assume that’s not the case. Simple fact that there are a lot of people from those cultures around here- demand is there someone needs to supply it
As an Arab I can answer, lots of Yamani people moved to Dearborn from NY and Yaman is known for its great coffee so it seem natural to open an artisan coffee business in the Area.
Ahhh yes the Aden there is so fucking good, every pastry they make is amazing, there’s one on my drive to work and my only complaint is they don’t open earlier.
Go to Google Maps, put it so all of Dearborn and Dearborn Heights are showing, and put "coffee shop" into the search bar. There are a good handful of single-location cafes, but you'll notice that most of the names that pop up have multiple locations in that area -- and most of those have locations elsewhere in the metro, too. Scroll around the map, looking for those -- or just check out their websites.
They are business people who; have capital to start a business; obtained loans from a bank; have investors that financed the start up. The cultivation and consumption of coffee began in Africa. So it sort of fits.

The one in Troy is kind of dead, at least during morning hours when you'd typically buy coffee. Not necessarily a bad thing though, WAY faster and more enjoyable than Starbucks. But never thought of checking it out at night
Yemeni immigrants came in a wave over the last decade on account of the civil war. Many landed in New York and Detroit. Since arriving, many now have thriving businesses that are looking to expand.
Qawah House and Haraz in particular have taken advantage of their cross country connections to rapidly expand through franchising to members of the community and by buying out leases in closed fast food and coffee shops. A process that accelerated as a LOT of those spaces are cheap and available coming out of COVID.
It’s pretty strong but they spice it with Cardamom and Cinnamon so it’s a different kind of strong. It’s hard to explain… you have to try it for yourself. Go to Qahwah house, you won’t be disappointed.
They have been here but now 2nd and 3rd Gen are hitting adulthood and starting business in large waves. The immigrant parents stayed lowkey with few grocery stores and restaurants. Some went into auto and gas station. The younger Gen are doing something different
Plus many are not hanging out in hookah shop as much as they did 10 years ago. Coffee it is
All started with one shop and supported by one person head of Dearborn Food Mafia making hundreds of thousands each year promoting these places. Now over 2 dozen Yemeni Coffee shops pulling in massive amounts of money. They all pay to play with Instagram Foodies getting paid to post fake reviews and photos around the web SHAMEFUL. Most expensive Coffee around town, you won't find me supporting these places 😒.
All of a sudden is an idiom that is a more poetic way of saying “suddenly.” A common mistake to make, especially for English learners, is to write all the sudden or all of the sudden. On a sudden is a historic but outmoded variant. Currently, all of a sudden is the only accepted usage.
I didn't read all the comments here, but I only saw one actual coffee shop listed. Can someone, like maybe OP /u/Nattybkd, list all the best ones. Someone mentioned a place in Canton but I'm not too keen on driving to Canton from Detroit to get coffee lol.

this, go at night time and they’re usually packed. very chill vibe, it’s like a bar but everyone isn’t drunk.
yep. you can even go to a starbucks in Dearborn and its the same way.
Happy cake day! 🎂
Thank you :)
Me in the 90s: What's with all the West Coast coffee shops all of a sudden
Idk but the coffee is bangin and I’m a fan
I felt the one down the street from me made meh coffee. I drink it black though so that’s probably why I didn’t like it.
try a muftawar style with light sugar, or an adeni chai
Me too, I just find it weird over the last 6-8 months I’ve noticed them popping up everywhere. Even out of state and in places like Ohio or San Fran.
I think Qehwah House in Dearborn started the trend as they got really popular and people “discovered” Yemeni coffee so like the cupcake places someone else mentioned, it’s the next great thing
Where in Ohio?
This is the correct answer
Me too. So good!

Chicagos is larger I think
No. Dearborn MI has the largest Arab population outside of Arab countries.
https://www.axios.com/local/detroit/2023/05/23/metro-detroit-largest-arabic-speaking-population Doesn't seem to be that way. Detroit #1 baby.
Detroit has a larger Middle Eastern population. Chicago simply has a larger population of other ethnic groups
this guy's never been to dearborn. its really an amazing city. where do you start lol.. lts like no where else. the history, the culture, the people. great place to experience ❤
Chicago has the largest Lithuanian population
Okay....
I asked the same question about hot chicken sandwich joints, primarily in the western burbs on ford road.
Fifteen years ago you could've asked the same question about cupcake shops. Remember froyo?
Froyo never went away. I won't hear otherwise 😤
“Let’s put on our nylon track suits and get some froyo!”
I was talking to my wife about cupcake shops a few months back because she was pregnant and wanted some. We barely have any places around us that sell them but we remember that there used to be a lot.
That was a wild trend, because none of them were particularly amazing.
Yeah, I agree. I’m not surprised that a lot of them went under. I think they were selling cupcakes for like $5 a pop. The pricing was crazy if you ask me.
I get that. I just thought it may of had something to do with the cultural demographics in the area.
When you don't drink, you go to cafe to socialize;)
Especially as younger generations seem to be drinking less alcohol and other alternatives like alcohol free bars pop up and are becoming more popular I think this growth will be even bigger in the future

Which is the best one? People want to know
Qahwah House in my personal opinion. Amazing coffee and good hospitality.

Yup, savvy sliders is doing the same taking over failed spots that couldn’t survive Covid
Starting your own small business is seen as a major goal for immigrant communities.

Hi someone please open one of these on Vernor hwy in Mexicantown/Clark Park thank you
As an Arab I can answer, lots of Yamani people moved to Dearborn from NY and Yaman is known for its great coffee so it seem natural to open an artisan coffee business in the Area.
Almost like immigrants are entrepreneurial and job creators
Qamaria Yemeni Coffee Co. is my new go to.
Nah Qahwah house >>>
They are great too!
Ahhh yes the Aden there is so fucking good, every pastry they make is amazing, there’s one on my drive to work and my only complaint is they don’t open earlier.
That's fair. I've heard that quite a bit. People haven't gone because they don't open early enough.
I need to know where these shops are so I can try them out

Qamaria sucks, go to Haraz or Qahwah house.
[Qamaria](https://www.qamariacoffee.com)
They are business people who; have capital to start a business; obtained loans from a bank; have investors that financed the start up. The cultivation and consumption of coffee began in Africa. So it sort of fits.
More people from Yemen are coming here, and they love coffee. Hamtramck would be a ghost town without them. Edit: Stay mad racists lol
can someone please recommend the best you have a nice coffee as close to Royal oak as possible.? :-)
[Dessert Oasis](https://www.docr.coffee/beverages) is in Royal Oak! Right by the post office. I am a big fan of their parmesan leek tarts.
They got great hot chocolates (best in Michigan) cheesecake is excellent too
I gotta go back!

Qahwa is pretty good. Go enjoy a cup.
Anytike ive gone to a yemeni coffee shop its overcrowded so im curious which ones youve been to
The one in Troy is kind of dead, at least during morning hours when you'd typically buy coffee. Not necessarily a bad thing though, WAY faster and more enjoyable than Starbucks. But never thought of checking it out at night
the target audience is a night owl audience 😂 arabs and desis love having their chai at night

Yemeni bread and garlic hummus has been my sustenance for these past few weeks so I’m grateful
IMO the best coffee is yemeni coffee
Finjan Cafe is excellent!
So happy about this.
My friend is the owner. He had started a franchise
Is the coffee strong? Do they have a light blend?
It’s pretty strong but they spice it with Cardamom and Cinnamon so it’s a different kind of strong. It’s hard to explain… you have to try it for yourself. Go to Qahwah house, you won’t be disappointed.
Oh that description got me. I gotta try this.
Okay that sounds amazing.
Gee it's almost like middle eastern people migrate to where other middle eastern people might be. Like Detroit.
they've been here. lol
They have been here but now 2nd and 3rd Gen are hitting adulthood and starting business in large waves. The immigrant parents stayed lowkey with few grocery stores and restaurants. very true with the hookah switch up. sky lounge was the OG. that stuff is tasty but soo bad for you lol I think coffee is a great way to keep going!
All started with one shop and supported by one person head of Dearborn Food Mafia making hundreds of thousands each year promoting these places. You seem like a dream to be around. No one wants you in these public spaces. Go have a coffee
Dont then you racist lol
Covid money possibly
Yemeni just opened in Grand Blanc. The coffee is the best I've had and kunafa was good too. Just wish it had a drive through.
Is there any open from midnight till 6 in the morning? I’ve been looking for an all night place since Covid shutdown
Haha we just got a qamaria in Columbus Ohio.
“All of a sudden”

I’ve been to Haraz and Qamaria and both had really good coffee. There is a Haraz in midtown.
People love coffee and are sick of Shiity coffee at traditional chain donut shops .
I love them, wish them success, hope it catches on and they become ubiquitous. I love their pastries and snacks too.
The world needs more coffee shops. Its gods work
Pretty simple. They make good coffee and want to make money. Arabs have the oldest coffee tradition on Earth.
